This Week with George Stepanopoulos notes the passings of musician and E Street Band member Danny Federici, Ford speechwriter Robert Hartmann, painter Joseph Solman, as well as 8 more service people killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to icasualties.org, that brings our military casualties in Iraq to 4,039. And per IBC, 414 civilians were killed this week.

are we still friendly with George S.?
Add to that "In Memorium" the debate process in this country which, this past week, received a nail in its coffin from apathy and triviality, having been co-opted by what corporations deign to pass off as "news-worthiness."
A weekly memoriam is fitting, but, how about from someplace that isn't filled with crooks and liars? Iraqibodycount, or some such place?
Why does C&L continue to post Steppy's disingenuous "In Memoriam"? Georgie clearly showed us his sorry ass and priorities last week at that ridiculous "debate" and frankly, I don't ever want to see his corporate cock sucking ass again.
sorry for goin' o.t. ms. belle but i shant be up for the open...
but can you believe that damn dirty hippie steven spielberg is making a movie about those terrorists, the chicago seven?
and what's HIS excuse for not wearing a piece of plastic from china on his lapel?!
George, do you think those dead soldiers love America as much as you do?
I am so sorry Nicole. I know death hurts and should be blogged but have you heard about Obama's light blue bikini underware. Hillary has stated she has none and wants to find out why he has powder blue under wear. This can be the turning point with the embittered PA voters. Come on Nicole this is important news. The next debate will prolly be all about this issue.
Left&Left @ 4:
I addressed this in an earlier thread. I am going to continue to have an In Memoriam segment on the weekends because I would feel terrible if the weekend we decide to stop doing it is the one where a C&Ler finds the name of their loved one on the screen. We have many family members of service people in Iraq that read the site frequently and we've been thanked weekly for continuing to acknowlege their sacrifice. That's who I do it for, not Stephanopoulos.
George Stephanopoulos is no more and no less beholden to corporate interests as any other talking head on Sunday mornings. I am no more outraged by his framing than I am Brit Hume, Chris Wallace, Chris Matthews or Tim Russert. While I certainly understand and respect your desire to boycott GS out of principle, I'm not going to stop doing this section on Sundays. And trust me, we'll keep showing when his questions are outrageous, because that's what we've been doing here for years now.
414 Iraqi civilians killed this week? Who is paying attention to that?
BRAVO C&L!!! for the ´´In Memoriam ´´ segment. I personaly wish more blogs had such. Either way its a sad but informative factor to have. Dont change a thing please!
New blog post is up over in my neck of the woods. Enjoy or not.
Take care folks and thanks again C&L for a excellent blog where I can lament without the crap others get from other blogs!
Have a good sunday eveing and a even better monday morning.
Best Regards,,,
Your right Rico, All Hillary and Obama. The press is so embedded with this corrupted administation, and it is dismaying. All of the deaths and barely a mention. Sickening.
I'm surprised Bush hasn't said . . hey what you complaining about 58,209 American Soldiers died in Vietnam this is minor.
Sounds like something he would blurt out under pressure.
When I die I'm viewing it as a new beginning.
Condi just threw the gauntlet, that in memoriam list may get a whole lot longer:

1Watt @ 14:
Whens Condi going to suit up and lead her followers into combat?
Edward Lorenz also passed last week.
1Watt @ 14:
I know it is considered gauche to compare a member of the Bush administration to the Nazi regime, but even Hitler was more diplomatic than Fraeulein Rice
Let's not forget Chris Gaffney died this week after battling cancer. He was 57.
Nicole Belle @ 8:
Thank you, Nicole. My nephew just received word he's going to Iraq in June. He was in Germany, safely away from the idiocy going on in Iraq, when he re-upped with the (false) hope he'd be assigned to Fort Bragg, NC, his hometown, to be near his finacee. Dumb move, I know, but who can talk sense to a 22-year-old in love?
Anyway, as much as I loathe Stephy, I always have paid homage to those he lists on "In memoriam."
Now it's much more personal.
"...414 civilians were killed this week."
Bush don't count brown people.
Matt Hussein in Texas @ 19:
Your nephew wasn't stop lossed but re-uped? I won't say that was a dumb move because you already did.
A request to the staff. Can you start including the estimated total of Iraqui deaths as well as the weekly count, also maybe add the widget that they have here http://www.iraqbodycount.org/contribute/educate/instructions/grey-128x128 to one of your sidebars?
Thank you!
Matt Hussein in Texas @ 19:
I'm not a big prayer, but I'm sending out positive thoughts to your nephew during his tour. And his fiancee for dealing with how he'll be upon his return.
According to icasualties.org, that brings our military casualties in Iraq to 4,039
******************************************************
Anyone know whether the statistics on how many civilian contractors are available to the public? I've heard, of course -- who hasn't? -- that the official tally of casualties only includes those who've been killed within the actual field of operations and doesn't include those who've died as a result of their injuries after being removed from the combat area. I also happen to know that many of the positions which were formerly filled by military personnel in days gone by are now filled by civilian contractors, and it seems safe to conclude that there have been more than a few casualties within their ranks as well -- but to the best of my knowledge, they aren't included in the official tally either. Of course, it's not hard to see the rationale for this. It seems unlikely in the extreme that the DoD doesn't have figures on how many civilian contractors have been killed since most of them would have needed to obtain security clearances in order to get the job -- but it seems likely that if the DoD were to release the real figures on just how many people have lost their lives so far as a result of their employment either with the US military or affiliated contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan, we would be looking at a much higher number which might make a substantial majority of Americans change their minds about the war or at least think twice.
I will not watch anything that has to do with sir hacksalot or his "show".
Fuck you with as many syllables Ms. Stepanopoulos!
robertd @ 2:
well you took the punchline right out of my mouth, robertd!
Nicole Belle @ 8:
Boy George insulted the national conscience last week, and he sniper-attacked the leading presidential candidate, the ONLY candidate to not support the corrupt occupation of Iraq, the occupation that is killing innocent people around the world, including USA soldiers.
Nobody needs his show to remind us how to mourn or who to mourn.
I think you're just taking the easy road on this one, because he packages it, and all you have to do is capture it and post it here. Very little work required.
HIS "in memoriam" is pretty music set to names. You mean somebody there doesn't know how to do this stuff on their own? Sony Vegas? Flash? Not hard to do, Nicole.
The only credible "in memoriam" Boy George should do is one of himself, selling out to a media whore named Hannity, thumbing his nose at our precious, now crumbling election process, making a mockery of our candidates, and shaming them with insipid, stupid questions.
I'm sorry, but that man outraged me with his conduct. I'd sooner spit at him than watch him on the tube.
Other notable names:
Barbara McDermott, 95, last American survivor of the RMS Luistania sinking.
John Archibald Wheeler, 96, "Black Hole" physicist
Brandi Hawbaker, 26, an up-and-coming poker player
Tommy Holmes, 91, hit in 37 consective games for the Boston Braves in 1945.
Ollie Johnson, 95, Disney Animator. Last of the "Nine Old Men" (I was surprise George didn't picked him!)
Marisa Sannia, 61, Italian singer.
Madeline Lee Gilford, 84, actress
Hazel Court, 82, "Scream Queen" actress
Edward Lorenz, 90, "Chaos Theory" theorist
I completely agree with Lollimom on this, Nicole, someone else could do a FAR better job creating a weekly segment and not use Stepinalottamess's packaged prettiness. I will not watch him again. Ever.
Lollimom @ 27:
Lollimom, if you want to volunteer to do it, we will accept happily. I do not have the time nor the energy to try to put something like that together. I'm not being callous, I'm being practical. I spend far more time working on this site than I truly have time for and that time comes out of time I could be spending with my kids and husband, working around the house and more often than not, desperately needed sleep. I cannot add any more work load on to what I do, and with all due respect, if you think it's easy to put together some video, then you don't have a lot of experience with it. It takes our video people a lot of time to do what they do too.
Again, Stephanopoulos' work is no more outrageous than Brit Hume, Tim Russert, Chris Wallace or others. We document them everyday. Yes, his professionalism after the debate last week should be scrutinized, but it's almost as if you think this is a new phenomenon. It's not. That's why I do not make a pre- and post-debate distinction on This Week, and barring any contributions from volunteers to replace it, why I'll continue to use the In Memoriam section.
