Senator Barack Obama on The Daily Show

Senator Obama dropped by "The Daily Show" last night (via satellite) to talk about the upcoming Pennsylvania primary and catch up with John on all the things that have happened since they last spoke.

JS: I’m going to cut through the spin for you, sir. This is what I’m here for. There’s a lot of insinuation amongst the pundits, etc., about these controversies. The Rev. Wright controversy, the flag pin controversy…by the way, I’m wearing mine, it’s just pinned directly to my chest. I can tell you what the real concern is and you can answer the question here, right here, right now and put it all to bed.

BO: Right.

JS: Sir, we are concerned that ultimately, at the end of the day, if you are fortunate enough to get the Democratic nomination, fortunate enough to become President of the United States, will you pull a ‘bait and switch’, sir, and enslave the white race? Is that your plan? And if it is your plan, be honest, tell us now.

BO:That is not our plan, Jon. But I think your paranoia might make you suitable as a debate moderator.

Thanks for posting that, silentpatriot. It was fun to watch. How can anyone not like Obama? Hell his sense of humor is worth something, even if you don't like his politics.

On the other hand we have another case of Bill Clinton not knowing when to just be quiet. Warning, this is at Fox news.

Democratic party, just this once can you not snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!!
If you nominate Hillary we will LOSE in November!!
If you nominate Obama at least we've got a chance.
This country CAN NOT survive another 4 years of the vile freaks that have destroyed so much of what we had left. A McBush presidency will finish us off. The stakes are too high to nominate a person who misremembers whether she was under fire in Bosnia (only one of her many misspeaks and misadventures.)

Obama '08 PLEASE

I know what you mean. Not because he is one of the good ole boys, but because he would be fun to be with. Smart as hell and with a great sense of humor, how do you beat that?

Just four more hours until the polls close. I'm somewhere between being excited and being fearful. I know it isn't over for Obama if he loses tonight but I want so bad for him to put her away in a large state, so that argument can end.

Obama may be brought in so the public will forget Bush and the entire process of economic collapse and war may be slowed somewhat to create an environment in which the public will be allowed to acclimate more slowly to perpetual war, a declining standard of living and growing police state while fearmongering continues to be used to quell public resistance and defiance.

J2B,

For better or worse it seems these three are what we have to chose from. Can you really blame anybody for being grateful that in Obama we have an intelligent, articulate, charming individual with some poise and grace? If we're going to go down at least we can do it with some class. Billary is a power hungry, shrill harpy and McBush is a walking talking disaster. Obama may not be "it", but he's head and shoulders above our other corporately mandated "choices."

Exactly how many debates do we need? We're already past 20. You should know their positions on the issues by now. The reason Obama has had enough is because the process has devolved into a bunch of flag pin and former pastor bullcrap that has no relevance. And why should Obama simply allow Michigan and Florida be handed to Clinton? Without a re-vote, it's simply unfair. He played by the rules. He did not campaign in either state, and hell, his name wasn't even on the ballot in one.

blaze's picture

I'm curious why we concentrate on the "gotcha" questions of the debate and ignore the truly disturbing statement made by Barack.
When asked "How would you use previous Presidents in your administration", Barack said that he wouldn't use the current President (laughs) but then he said that he would consult George H.W. Bush because "he had a good foreign policy". That made my jaw drop so I Googled Barack and George Sr. and got some quotes from Obama speeches.
He said that he admired the foreign policies of John Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. Again my jaw dropped.
Either the man was too young and politically naive in the 80's, or he really appreciates Iran/Contra and the illegal arms sales to Iran to supply the Contras and the secret Army, Navy and Air Force put together by the Reaganites and funded by secret off shore accounts fed by Right Wing billionaires all to avoid the law and invade Nicaragua. He seemed to admire the invasion of Grenada. He delighted in the first preemptive war, the invasion of Panama to oust Noriega who was propped into power by George Bush himself. We killed over 4,000 innocent Panamanians and burned the poor sections of several Panamanian cities. Perhaps the BCCI scandal and the subsequent arming of Saddam Hussein didn't really matter much to Barack. I remember when Reagan/Bush claimed it was the Iranians who gassed the Kurds to take the scent off of Saddam (at least until they were corrected by reality). He also seems to support the arming of the "freedom fighters" in Afghanistan who later became Al Queda.
Truly disturbing statements by Barack Obama go unexplored by his followers. They would rather complain about media madness rather than let the implications of his words sink in. That must be why he got away with saying he would "unilaterally invade Pakistan if he had actionable intelligence against Al Queda". That statement could have come directly from Dubya himself.

What a surprise! There's no way to know if the votes cast will be the votes counted in PA. Because Pennsylvania uses DRE machines, electronic machines, which don't have a paper audit trail. And the PA politicos don't see anything wrong either. It's depressing as hell.

I hope it won't make a statistical difference. Anyway, if Clinton gets one vote, she'll stay in the race, as Rachel Maddow said last night. Clinton may be running on fumes and fantasy, but she's going to try to take this to the convention. It'll be up to the super delegates to decide this and SOON!

I thought this was common knowledge by now, but apparently, it's not. What really happened with FL and MI was:

BOTH Clinton & Obama agreed that the delegates from these states wouldn't count, because FL and MI moved their primaries up, in violation of National Democratic Party rules. The reason the dems voted to move the time up was because the moving of the date was attached to a bill that would get rid of voting machines that did not have paper trails. The majority in Tallahassee are repubs and they placed the dems in a catch 22 position. No dem wanted to vote against getting rid of machines that did not give a paper trail so they voted for it and thereby the voting date was moved up. It was a setup by the state repubs. The reason so many people turned out to vote in the primary, even though their presidential votes wouldn't count, was because there was an amendment that would double their homestead exemption on the ballot. The majority of Floridians wanted to make sure the amendment passed. That was the incentive that brought so many people to the polls.

And what would the obama apologists be saying if he had won Florida and Michigan; would they want the votes, or a revote. How is he going to have any kind of mandate from his own party, if he does not win the big states like Ohio and Pennsylvania? Thinking he is great and inspirational and all must make ya warm and fuzzy, but half of the registered democrats do not see it so much --- they want the woman. And this last debate with ABC, showed many of us how thin-skinned the obama group is. He has had little to defend until the Rev Wright made his debute on Fox, and then mean old abc --- good grief, Hillary has been suffering slings and arrows for months, obama must have noticed -- Saturday Night Live did -- and he was sitting right beside her during many of her moments. But he has to explain his own words sometime during the election process --- but not anymore with Hillary I guess. It is just not fair for someone like obama to have to put up with that kind of thing. who is he-- babyjesus? He is just a politican -- and this is the process --- he had to have had a clue.

Jon Stewart asks a good question here which Obama doesnt really answer (lets face it, Stewart is a comedian and not a journalist or pundit). He asked if, now that the PA primary is over will he just fire and forget? And he uses an example like Montana where candidates only campaigned briefly for the obvious reason that there are few delegates there.

So, once again, a stand-up comic asks really good political questions that the mainstream media has deemed too unsexy to ask, being too busy to talk about perms, pantsuits, and pins.

BTW, one has to ask about the upside to the economy that would come from enslaving white people. Get off your ass and get a job, honkeys! Except me...I have a job...*cough*

Did you view Rev Wright's whole sermon or just the soundbite? That's very karlrovian of you to keep on milking that silly issue. So now you are refering to fox news. umhh. Fox news? The same station that is home to bill o reilly, hannity.Since when did you people believe in what fox news say? my my my!!so you think abc did a great job brigging stupid issues like ayers, lapel pin and rev wright instead of healthcare,Iraq, the economy. I guess you don't care about those issues. I really don't know what to think of you people. I do not see any difference between the 30% of americans attack dogs that still believe junior bush is god and you hillary's attack dog supporters that will go to any lenght to see her win. You people don't care about the democratic party, you people are lemmings. I cannot believe you think fox news is relevant. Now you people are trying to scare the american people with ads about osama bin laden. You people have no shame,I think you need to turn in your democratic cards, create your own political party like lieberman and anoint a king or queen .

I live in Florida. Our votes didn't count and I have yet to meet one person who is pissed off about it. We knew the deal going in. Regardless of the game, you play by the rules and after the game, if the rules need changing, change them then, but not while the game is still being played.

Amen and thank you. There is no fair way to seat Florida now because we don't know how many intended votes would not be counted because the voters in good faith stayed home. They would be disenfranchised if the votes of those who did go to the polls were counted and theirs were not.

Huge turnout at my polling place today!

The ballot took a little time to decipher, though, because all ten delegate choices
were mixed up under Obama and Clinton. Why not just put all the delegates straight under each candidate that they promised to stick with? I suspect people that didn't bring their reading glasses would have a tough time reading the fine print under each candidate.

Anyone hear about this:
DOJ to monitor Philadelphia polls

This doesn't sit well with me. What are these cronies doing monitoring our elections? I'd prefer to have the UN...even Paraguay before this administration!

Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton for that matter are so much better at thinking on their feet and in a debate, will absolutely crush Sen. McCain.
I really cannot see how McCain will be able to survive this election (figuratively) when he is presented, to his face, with his flip-flopping on major issues, his blatant pandering, his hypocrisy and his lack of understanding of major issues. Both Democratic candidates will chew this guy up and spit him out in the debates. If only we can make it to the general election...

Johnny2Bad, you're playing a con game, and it's pretty slick. You aim your vitriol at both Obama and Clinton, while calling Obama, Clinton and (presumably) McCain "three stooges" and claiming that none of them are "it." Based on what criteria? If it's universal health care, fighting global warming, ending the war in the Middle East, reducing the influence of corporations and their lobbyists, then the only logical choice is Obama. But to say, "F**k 'em" is to trivialize the concerns and issues at the very heart of this election.

Your statement, "Neither went into FL or bought local ads there, but they both bought national cable time that they knew would be broadcast there. So F them both," is an asinine projection of rank stupidity. Buying commercials on national cable is NOT a sign of venality any more than wearing a flag lapel pin is a sign of patriotism. Johnny, you're not only 2 bad, you're 2 stupid, 2 ignorant, and 2 simple.

As for seating the Michigan and Florida delegations, both Clinton and Obama agreed to play by the rules, so it would be contemptible of anyone to now express a desire to play by a different set of rules.

For what actually happened, read Thomas Edsell,
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/07/hillary-clintons-michigan_n_953...

"Michigan and Florida violated national party rules by holding their primaries earlier in the season than party rules allowed, and, at the moment, the DNC has ruled that these two delegations will not be seated. Clinton won the primaries in both states.

Both Obama and Clinton appeared on the ballot in Florida, although each candidate abided by DNC rules and neither campaigned there.

The situation in Michigan is more problematic: Obama took his name off the ballot, while Clinton left hers on. The result was a 55 percent victory for Clinton; with 40 percent of the ballots cast for "uncommitted" and the rest for minor candidates.

So far, the Clinton campaign has attempted to cast the two-state dispute in a political/moral light, stressing the voting rights issue as well as the danger that no matter which of the candidates -- Obama or Clinton -- is the eventual nominee, if Michigan and Florida delegates are not seated, the dispute could suppress Democratic turnout and give the combined 44 electoral votes to the GOP."

Earlier you posted: “Poise”? “Grace”? Oh, man….We are doomed if thats the criteria. It aint Miss America. They are all walking, talking disasters. They are all power hungry. There’s not a wit of policy difference between ‘em.

We are not doomed if we desire that our President be poised, that is self composed and dignified, or if we want him/her to be full of grace (especially in light of Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib), or possessing a sense of fitness or propriety or possessing a disposition to be generous or helpful, showing goodwill, mercy or clemency.

i've noticed that whenever Obama appears heads and shoulders above the other candidates, some jerks will speak or write disdainfully of them all, including Obama as if he's the same as them when obviously he IS NOT!

Oh, please. Jesus, I'm sick and tired of that "likability" meme. Who gives a f*ck if you "like" him (or her)?

In 2000 it was: "He's someone you could have a beer with". WTF? Haven't we had enough of that shallow stupidity?

We need someone who's: Not on the take...Can give us good universal health care...Get us out of the middle east in less than 10 years....and slow down the relentless corporate march to melted icecaps, endless war and a facist world economy.

No matter how "likable" they are...Not one of the remaining three stooges are it.

So I take it you will cast your vote for someone you don't like? "Like" covers a myriad of things from their plans for our country's future, to the personality, to their determination to getting us back on the right track, and yes a sense of humor too.

There is a giant difference in saying you would like to spend casual time with a candidate you admire because of their personality and knowledge, than saying you want to shoot the shit with a wannabe cowboy frat boy and have a cold one.

So if none of the candidates suits your fancy, what is your plan on voting day?

Many of us are going to end up voting for candidates we don't like. I only hope all the Obamania has not turned off too many of all those folks who keep on voting for Hillary Clinton no matter what the arrogant concensus opinion on this site rants on and on over what really appears to me to be a "faith based" trust in a very junior senator. I suspect your guy will win the nomination but you might think to cut slim the humble pie you have been force feeding the rest of us. To dismiss us as fools and racists is as untrue as it is insulting. And counterproductive to your candidate's future and to our republic. I will happily vote for Senator Obama but I sure don't like the koolaid driners' abusive attitude served with such abandon around here.

right on

Nader wouldn't be able to do ANYTHING. He's never held elected office in his life. How can anyone take him seriously? Because he declares himself a "presidential candidate" every four years and then disappears? There's no way he'd be able to work with Congress.

Attempting to discredite Nader is a specialty of the Corporate Democrats. The Corporate Republicans hope he divides the Democratic vote.

In the end it matters not a huge amount which Corporate candidate wins.

The Corporatists (meaning also Fascists) take Nader very seriously. His is a formidable foe in court.

General Motors in the 60s sought every way to bring him down and they didn't do it.

Innumerable safety protocols were because of him.

He has never let off since then, he has never sold out.

The Corporate Media will ignore him, as best they can, as they did with Edwards.

People like Nader and Edwards can do the Corporate overlords harm, and they know it.

If Nader were President the bully pulpit would be in full swing and he would out the frauds in Congress.

Long live both Nader and Edwards. Long live their voices.

I hate it when people pretend they "know" Obama's mind at the moment he touched his cheek, and I hate it when people pretend they "know" another poster's mind. You don't. (If you doubt me, please some Descartes).

Goddam it, intellectual honesty is what it is. Do or do not. Not everyone's opinion will fit with the partisan's mold. I believe we should respect this fact, as it's the true meaning of diversity. And if you don't agree, it doesn't matter because you are a heretic who is damned to hell.

How can anyone not like Obama?

Oh, please. Jesus, I'm sick and tired of that "likability" meme. Who gives a f*ck if you "like" him (or her)?

No matter how "likable" they are...Not one of the remaining three stooges are it.

Likeable is a good place to start for me. I wasn't born until the 70's. First president I remember was Carter. My parents liked him. What school child didn't hate Reagan for adding sales tax to candy which previously hadn't been counted as food. And neither Bush did I like. Clinton was likeable even if he did turn out to be a man-whore but that only served to give him a kiny side that's intriguing even if not to commended in a Commander in Chief.

And now we have McCain, H. Clinton and Obama. I respect McCain, especially his service to the country and his having been totured but I do not like him or any of his stances on the issues.. Especially after that bit about his publicly calling his wife a cunt. I'd have cut his balls off if he'd been my husband and embarrassed me like that.

H. Clinton- as first lady, cool. But since her pandering and condescending "No Ways Tired" speech spoken with imagined "black" inflection, I find it impossible to find her likeable. I cannot and do not trust white people who behave this badly. If you can act a lie, you can carry out a lie. I find Clinton to be far too willing to say anything and everything she thinks people want to hear.

Obama - He is personable, he speaks in a normal tone of voice- He respectfully and carefully disagrees when he feels he must- and he seems to be determined not to bullshit the American people. He actually knows where the bullshit begins and ends and is determined to call it for what it is. He seems the most genuine and the most concerned about us all, not just the election cycle.

In short, I like him.

So likeability is a good place to begin although it should not be the only factor.
