McCain's Media: The media render the RNC obsolete
Ain't life grand? Jamison Foser:
Last week, Politico reported that John McCain has an "unorthodox strategy" to capture the presidency -- he "will rely on free media to an unprecedented degree to get out his message."
Interesting word, "rely" -- the American Heritage Dictionary defines it not only as "to be dependent for support, help, or supply," but also as "to place or have faith or confidence....read on

No matter how you slice it, McCain is still a campaign finance criminal.
I think he's forced to rely on free media support. The FEC won't be missing it's quorum for ever and if he spends too much he'll be spending even more time in court.
It is a stacked deck.
The free ride mccain got from the corporate MSM regarding his begging for, and then getting, an endorsement from hagee (xtian fanatic and anti-catholic) speaks volumes about the partisanship in the Fourth Estate.
On the other hand, Obama has been largely crucified by the same MSM for some things his pastor said during fire and brimstone sermons - statements that Obama has decried.
Should Obama get the nod, it will be a long uphill campaign for him, as it is apparent that the repukes and corporate entities who rely on the repukes to get filthy rich, are deathly afraid of a change in the status quo. Look for there to be a degree of open "swift-boating" that would make Kerry's experience seem a walk in the park when compared to what Obama will face.
The fix is in already, and the MSM is a part of it...
john, i don't know if i'll still be kickin' when you kick off your open thread...
just wanted to point out hillary's now trying this argument...
this really pisses me off. does she want the ghost of lincoln to strike her @$$ down with lightning, or swallow her within an earthquake?!
attn: hillary
CORPORATE FASCISM NOT ONLY SUCKS, IT MAKES NORMALLY COMPLACENT PEASANTS RISE UP WITH TORCHES AND PITCHFORKS AND RAISE HIGH HOLY HELL!!
KayInMaine @ 1:
he's also a paper mache pinata.
smack him good and hard and all your dreams will come true.
bullfrog @ 5:
i prefer obama as the democratic candidate, but if we get stuck with
hillary, then i will stay with the party,but.........
fuck hillary and bill for their crapass negative tactics,
they are looking more and more each day just like the repigs.
People should really worry why the media is tooting for Daff McGoo. Here is a secret to be told-- he hates Palestinians as much does the USi media. Hillary is no diff.
dadams @ 7:
the clintons look out for clintons. it's that simple.
bill doesn't give a f*ck about america, only his bank account and what's left of his shoddy legacy.
that's why he's slamming a candidate, obama, his younger more honest self would have fought hard for.
[Not remotely on topic. Stop it now, or I'll delete it all. We have a midday open thread you can go somewhat crazy on-Sitemonitor]
Frankly, if McCain OR Clinton wins, we'll know there was vote tampering.
The media is treating McCain with kid gloves. Many of his gaffes are underplayed or barley reported at all. The bias is so obvious even my father commented on it. Seems McCain can get away with 'Senior Moments' while Barack scatches his nose and the media(aka. Contessa Brewer) swears he is giving us the finger. Isn't MSM grand!
Well, now, see? Nice to know somebody can still rely on the media, innit?
Ask McCain .... and all the candidates
who will head up their FDA of THE UNITED STATES FDA
and what are their connections to
From the makers of Agent Orange (1) the now ubiquitous PCBs, DDT, recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone and Aspartame

The 6 corporations who run the media in this country need President Gampy. Even the few real journalists who wish to speak out probably know that if they do, they'll go the way of Phil Donahue and Dan Rather. And with the economy what it is, I suppose feeding your family is a major consideration, even if their silence is enabling America's descent into fascism.
THE MEDIA WILL HAPPILY ACCOMODATE HIM. If it hasn't been obvious in the past elections, YOU haven't been paying attention.
No doubt our "independent" media will roll out their Pentagon-controlled military analysts to bolster the McCain campaign.
About the only media with a semblance of independence is PBS within this country. Any media outlet adding Aljazeera English can expect negative FCC rulings in unrelated areas as well as an IRS tax investigation and so forth.
HRC wants to debate because she's behind & her campaign is in debt & debates are free advertising. She has everything to gain & nothing to lose, especially since there is no chance in hell she will be the nominee.
She's either delusional or just wants to damage Obama beyond electability in Nov. or both.
Maybe she's sufferring post-traumatic stress disorder from all that sniper fire she had to dodge in Bosnia!
& so it goes ...
I fail to see why McPapen needs "free" media. He gets passes on stuff like Hagee and his confusion of Iraq (a smaller, more lowland river country with one-third the population of Iran) with Iran (a much larger, mountainous country with three times Iraq's population), not to mention his lack of understanding of the extremist mindset (no way in Hell Shi'a Iran will finance Sunni in a country they fought a war with not even a generation ago when that Sunni group was mobilized to kill large numbers of their own people) and his inability to keep a story straight that seems straight out of the Republican caricature of John Kerry (he said it, and he didn't. Which is it?) when a Democrat saying it would get pilloried not only by the MSM but also by the RWNM. McPapen was a soldier serving in an illegal war against a foe that mainly wanted to be left alone.
He also seems to believe we have the forces for (God, please don't let this clusterfuck happen) an invasion of Iran. Iran is much larger, as I mentioned there's mountain terrain, has three times the population, and is using a fairly straightforward policy of stepping in to fill the post-Saddam power vacuum. It also could have destroyed Israel before it could have done anything about it long ago simply by a missle bombardment from an arsenal that unlike Saddam's actually works, and both Israel and Iran are still here. Where Johann McPapen would magic the forces from to strike Iran is beyond me. Why Iran is even considered a threat when it is at least ten and most likely fifteen years from a nuke and if it even gets close the Israelis are going to bomb it is also beyond me.
But of course, you won't hear any of this in the MSM, or for that matter the RWNM and sometimes the LWNM. "Free" media? McPapen's already got free media!
Obama seriously needs to start courting the veterans vote more. It will help him regain the "presidential candidate who happens to black' status instead of the marginalized "black candidate" box that his opponents have placed him. By tying in government treatment of veterans with his health care positions he would further expose McCain and the administrations abuse and indifference towards the military. Also he could address their housing, education, and benefit concerns as well as letting them know he won't send sons and daughters into harms way for any other reason but a true threat to our nations security unlike Hillary and McCain. IAVA and VoteVets as well as The American Legion (I'm sure there are other groups, too) could help close the gap, and Republican candidates away for good.
bullfrog @ 5:
hillary said she would abide by the rules that they agree upon.
Yeah, right
hillary didn't follow the rules for FL and MI.
She is reaching too far back in time (slavery time) they didn't have tv's back then, she is just silly and desperate.
mcpain doesn't have money nor a memory.
It's a joke that he even considered the repug choice.
The same media that sold the American public on the illegal seizure and occupation of Iraq? Tell me how Joe Citizen could be gulled again...
If he cant stop an ad as leader of his party how can he stop the violence in Iraq
Today I finished my second McCain book of the week, Free Ride by David Brock and Paul Waldman, and The Real John McCain by Cliff Schecter. They are thoroughly documented and they scare me. The MSM will provide McCain with all kinds of free media and they will fawn all over him and call him independent and a maverick. They will attribute integrity and honesty to him. It is obvious they have not done their homework. Helen Thomas is correct. The press is lazy! These so-called journalists, political analysts and commentators are political hacks, just like John McCain. He is just as scary as Bush and just as incompetent. Further, he will continue to politicize the government. Do everything you can, John to publicize these authors and their work.
John McCain and the RNC can count on right wing tools like Sean Hannity to replay videos of Rev Wright screaming "Goddam American" 40 billion times over the next 7 months. But that will not stop the 537s from running attack ads starring Rev Wright an additional 40 billion times.
Cando (at 24) is right. McCain is DANGEROUS, and the MSM is LAZY.
I think there is GREAT FEAR eminating from Republicans and from conservative corporate America. They are terrified of the prospects of a liberal White House and a Democratic controlled House and Senate.
Our greatest fear should be another stolen election.
Our greatest concentration of effort should be COUNTING ALL THE VOTES IN NOVEMBER.
Simply read what is below to fully understand how the criminal CORPORATE MEDIA/ REPIGLICAN MEDIA operates ...
THE HAPPY BIRTHDAY EXPRESS: “I honestly don’t know what to say about this.” Those were Brother Greenwald’s words when he posted the videotape of the press corps’ recent fete at John McCain’s crib in Sedona. For ourselves, we recalled a grander affair, conducted during the 2004 Republican convention in New York. A certain saint threw himself a birthday bash—and darlings, forget about Holly Bailey! When the sanctified solon turned 68, the firmament’s biggest stars were there! To his credit (explanation below), Richard Leiby did the play-by-play for the Washington Post. This is your press corps on creme brulee—French tarts, loin of lamb, lobster salad:
LEIBY (8/31/04): Sen. John McCain tended to his political base Sunday night: the entire national media. The maverick Arizona Republican, once (and future?) presidential aspirant and press secretary's dream hosted a hyper-exclusive 68th birthday party for himself at La Goulue on Madison Avenue, leaving no media icon behind. Guests included NBC's Tom Brokaw and Tim Russert, ABC's Peter Jennings, Barbara Walters, Ted Koppel and George Stephanopoulos, CBS's Mike Wallace, Dan Rather and Bob Schieffer, CBS News President Andrew Heyward, ABC News chief David Westin, Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons, CNN's Judy Woodruff and Jeff Greenfield, MSNBC's Chris Matthews, CNBC's Gloria Borger, PBS's Charlie Rose—pause here to exhale—and U.S. News & World Report publisher Mort Zuckerman, Washington Post Chairman Don Graham, New York Times columnists William Safire and David Brooks, author Michael Lewis and USA Today columnist Walter Shapiro. They and others dined on lobster salad, loin of lamb, assorted wines, creme brulee, lemon souffle and French tarts.
[...]
One guest, who asked not to be identified, described invitees as "the Journalistic Committee for a Government of National Unity." After singing "Happy Birthday" to McCain, many of the guests—Russert, Borger and Shapiro, among others—cabbed to Elaine's, where Zuckerman hosted a mob scene that included Fox's Bill O'Reilly, PBS's John McLaughlin and New York Gov. George Pataki, The Post's Mark Leibovich reports. By 11 p.m. the Second Avenue landmark—with red carpet outside—was elbow-to-elbow with martini-sipping guests. Thus commenced Campaign 2008 (we think).
Somehow, it was the singing of “Happy Birthday” which always struck us as most wrong: At any rate, free food! And plenty of pandering! And after they sang “Happy Birthday” to Mac, the gang cabbed it up to Elaine’s.
If you don’t understand the press corps’ coverage of McCain, perhaps you can find a hint or two in Leiby’s dispatch.
Last Friday, Jamison Foser did a superlative post about the way this gang of hopeless galoots insists on calling McCain a “war hero”—even when the designation bears no resemblance to the issue at hand. Beyond that, reporters love to work McCain’s “straight talk” slogan into “reporting.” Stephanopoulos sang “Happy Birthday” that night—and soon was asking the saintly solon for “straight talk answers” on ABC’s air. To judge from Leiby’s guest list, E. J. Dionne wasn’t big enough to make the affair at La Goulue (French for “glutton”), but today he describes his ongoing love for the Great McCain—and he shamelessly equates Obama and Farrakhan to McCain and Hagee. It’s hard to be more disingenuous that that, as many others have already noted. But so what? This has gone on for the past dozen years, and may well decide this year’s race.
But readers, back to the birthday brawl! We first posted Leiby’s text in October 2004, after Ted Koppel attended a fete for Colin Powell instead of prepping for a critical Nightline (see THE DAILY HOWLER, 10/19/04).On that date, we offered links to past HOWLER posts which showed the big stars of the mainstream “press corps” at play with the people they “cover.” We saw Russert at Rumsfeld’s Christmas party, bragging that he had foreseen Saddam’s capture. (He had seen it in a dream!) We saw Koppel attending that Powell bash, then failing on that night’s critical program. We saw Gwen Ifill dining with Darling Condi, then rolling over for her gal pal in a major interview.
Yes. This is the way your “press corps” works—though Kevin and Josh and Matt won’t tell you. Sedona was just a suggestion, a cook-out, a small affair thrown for the proles.
By the way—why the praise for Leiby’s report? (It appeared in “Reliable Source.”) Here’s why: The “press corps” didn’t just sing “Happy Birthday” to McCain in 2004—they gave him a subsequent birthday gift. You see, despite the star power at that bash, almost no one reported it! Lloyd Grove did a brief piece in the Daily News, saying McCain had thrown “a smallish dinner” (text below). But almost no one else in the press corps mentioned this event at all. You see, they luvv to do celebrity stories—unless the celebrities involved are themselves. In that case, they know they must hide their behavior—the behavior of their group’s biggest players. The comical story of Jack Welch’s “Lost Boys of the Sconset?” That comical—and revealing—story has almost never appeared in print. Within the clan, housebroken pool boys know they must hide the truth about how the “press” lives and functions.
They sing Happy Birthday to those they adore—and then, they pimp to get them elected. Dionne is pimping again today, just as he’s done in the past. The comparison to Obama is disgracefully fake. But so what? Saint John gets a toast.
Lloyd Grove’s smallish dinner: In the Daily News, Grove seemed to get the scope of things wrong. That said, we don’t mean to criticize Grove. Few others said word the first:
GROVE (8/31/04): McCAIN FOR SOMETHING! The media elite met to eat at La Goulue Sunday at a smallish dinner hosted by media favorite John McCain and wife Cindy.
The buzz was that the press-friendly Arizona senator, who was celebrating his 68th birthday, is considering another run for President four years from now.
"This is like any other trade convention—everybody's talking about what the new power mower might be," quipped McCain ad-maker Mike Murphy. Among the guests were Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, Ted Koppel and Dan Rather, Barbara Walters, Jeff Greenfield and even New York Times book critic Michiko Kakutani.
"Oh I see," one diner remarked on surveying the crowd. "It's a party for the base.
That was Grove’s entire item. According to Nexis, this was the second longest account of this heady, newsworthy affair.
