Fareed Zakaria: McCain Would Mean Second Cold War
By SilentPatriot Monday Apr 28, 2008 8:38amThank God someone out there is scrutinizing McCain's neocon craziness.
On March 26, McCain gave a speech on foreign policy in Los Angeles that was billed as his most comprehensive statement on the subject. It contained within it the most radical idea put forward by a major candidate for the presidency in 25 years. Yet almost no one noticed.
In his speech McCain proposed that the United States expel Russia from the G8, the group of advanced industrial countries. Moscow was included in this body in the 1990s to recognize and reward it for peacefully ending the cold war on Western terms, dismantling the Soviet empire and withdrawing from large chunks of the old Russian Empire as well. McCain also proposed that the United States should expand the G8 by taking in India and Brazil—but pointedly excluded China from the councils of power.
You would think a policy-reversal of this magnitude would merit some attention. Not in McCain's Media.

MSM = McCain Stream Media
He's bang on. McClain, not of these times, this generation, is of the cold war mentality
Did anybody bother to tell McOld that the Soviet Union no longer exists; and, that the communist party is no longer in charge?
Do we need another reason not to see a McCain administration?!
I like Pie @ 3:
Shhhh, he's going to refight Reagan's pretend battles...
Cold war? Some like it hot!
We're probably looking at the pre-selected candidate here. And the one that will be leading the war on Iran, that Bush will begin before he leaves office.
So I wonder, will he keep the same war cabinet Bush used? Condi, Rumsfield, etc...?
McVain: "...expel Russia from the G8."
McVain reporter: "... hey, John, when's he next BBQ? Love those chicken wings."
McVain: "and let me say, I will never expel a reporter from one of my BBQs."
I wonder what they are going to do to reward us when the time comes?
If Rev Wright had been in his audience McCain's speech would have gotten mega attention. The sooner we can get a nominee in the democratic party, the sooner this crap that McCain says can be pointed out to voters. The media is paying him no attention as long as they can milk the Wright story.
Anyone myopic enough to support Mc100yearwar is putting their perverse party ahead of the country. Fact.
Chimp to speak shortly on "Economy"
10:30 a.m. EDT
Is Newsweek accurate in reporting that he implied that the United States has the power to unilaterally do all of these things?
If he wasn't senile I'd swear he was on crack.
If you have the stomach for it, bush is going to hold a news conference in the rose garden at 10:30 eastern time. He's going to speak about the economy....as if he has a clue.
I hope someone is keeping a collection of all the insane things McDitto is saying during his speeches and interviews. The dem nominee won't even have to create ads, just show the clips and ask the American people if McCain is who they want to try to repair our country? Once the public hears all these things, they are going to run screaming to vote for anyone else but him.
BP 1Q profit rises 63 percent on record oil prices AP - Tue Apr 29, 6:48 AM ET
Jaden @ 4:
As many as we can to filter through to the 28% that still support Bush/republicans/religious right cabal. Repeat as often as possible: NeoMcCain should not be president.
L.A. Confidential @ 10:
BP 1Q profit rises 63 percent on record oil prices AP - Tue Apr 29, 6:48 AM ET
All you have to ask McCain is,
What, are you going to do for ME Mr. McCain.
Now if every American asked that question he would not be able to give you a straight answer.
L.A. Confidential @ 15:
Let's see if the Chimp mentions 1Q Oil Company Profits.
L.A. Confidential @ 16:
McCain would probably promise you a pony or a shiny new bike.
pissed off patricia @ 18:
A little lie is about all he would offer.
"Oh I'm going to make sure you don't have to work! I mean we're the wealthiest country earth right! Let me shake your hand!"
Bush was a failure in McCain's eyes.
...At starting the rapture during his time in office.
Come on C+L reporters wake up and out a bed guys and gals and lets get on top of the Chimp scoop before he gets on top of you.
Snooze you loose isn't that old saying?
Its interesting that McCain singled out those four nations (nicknamed BRIC countries) for exclusion or inclusion into the G8. He really is biting at the hands that feed him (I.E. the United States) with his exclusions. It is well known that China owns a lot of U.S. debt and exports a very large portion of the goods that Americans are reliant upon. Russia as well is one of the largest exporters of oil to the world market and therefore a major player (just like the other three nations) on the world economic scene. The G8 can not exclude those two nations unless they are willing to exclude the United States as well.
India and Brazil are advancing at faster clips economically and are working on their own nuclear programs which McCain doesn’t seem to mind. The difference between those nations in McCain’s eyes is not just an ideological or military one. Russia and China have specifically stated that they may move away from the U.S. dollar at some point due to its depreciating value and massive U.S. debt. In fact, Russia has already started to price their oil in Russian Rubles for that very reason. This is the real threat that McCain is worried about.
Okay, I have the Pepto-Bismol close at hand so I'm gonna watch bush's speech, so you don't have to.
I have no more faith in bush's understanding of the economy than I do in McCain's. At least at one time McCain admitted he was clueless.
If televised impeachment hearings or war crimes hearings were happening right now nobody would be worrying about McCain winning in November. The Republican philosophy and Party would be in shreds.
pissed off patricia @ 24:
Both Bush and McCain know exactly what is happening don't kid yourself.
L.A. Confidential @ 10:
I don't think he could find the economy with 2 hands and a hunting dog
theWalrus @ 25:
People would be watching American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, etc, instead.
Amazing hubris. Imagine a Republican president even attempting to shove aside Russia and China. what gall to even suggest such a thing. where does he even begin to get off believing this sort of thing would happen?!?!? Ignore and marginalize Russia and China, huh!?!?! And how, McCain, would this be accomplished? explain that old man. you can't because it can't be done and wouldn't be.
Mr Zakaria is hardly a knee-jerk "liberal - leftist" . Anybody want to offer more perspective to me with that perception?
Wake up crew. Nichole? John? Wake up!!!!! Up and at em!!!!
They should hire me.
Shorter McCain foreign policy speech - Mr. Putin, build up this wall!
L.A. Confidential @ 28:
I'm not so sure about that. It's about as close to reality as you can get. Throw in a little Abramoff and hookers and you'll get a lot of people watching. I remember being glued to the screen, as a kid, during the Nixon hearings.
But it's a pipe dream, I know.
The assumption was that, in 2008, the Democrats were a shoo-in.
So McCain was to be the Bush family's sacrificial place holder until memories faded and Jeb-Boy could ascend the throne in 2012.
Of course, my party being what it is, we always make things as difficult as possible...
This time we're being helped by a pastor with a few good points and a terrible sense of timing.
Add to that the media being in awe of real real live heeeeeero - see Brian Williams, Russert and others gush over him (and Petraeus) because he served and they didn't - and you have the makings of another 50:50 vote with Scalia and the Supremes casting the tie-breakers.
"Just get over it," says Scalia the Arrogant to the peasants.
Mc Lame probably thinks Eisenhower is president and that he just beat Nixon in the primaries. Wonder what his talking points about JFK will be?
If Obama had made such a statement you can bet the wingnut media would come unglued and start their 24/7 continuous loop of misleading propaganda ala Wright. Instead---an intentional complicity of silence. With a few exceptions, the MSM today is a farce and insult to the integrity of their so called profession, which has devolved into being an advocacy group for moneyed corporate interests.
theWalrus @ 34:
Sure it would make interesting content. As far as Nixon was concerned that was the days when the Media actually did what it is supposed to be doing.
This is the old "Maverick" in action. I think the reason he likes that view of himself is that it give him latitude to spout crap that he knows nothing about. It's kind of scary because he can be so easily manipulated. The perfect neocon tool. You whisper something in his ear and suddenly it shoots out of his mouth as a discussion item. No facts needed, no understanding necessary.
John McCain:
No war too large or too small. If you have the kids we have the guns. You provide the husbands and we'll provide the widows. We'll even send your orphans to military school. Got limbs? Become a dismember! Sign up today for tomorrow it will all be over!
pissed off patricia @ 12:
But, but, but the RNC cries little shiny tears everytime someone puts McCain's own words up on YouTube.
The only way McCain can be President is if he stands behind a cloud of fog and a noise-generator during the debates so that no one in the public can see or hear him. "Vote for the vaporous cloud of Republican-ness."
Bush: "Blame, blame, blame, blame....."
breakspear @ 29:
Yeah. Let's see, Russia controls a good chunk of the world's oil, and China is making all our shit . . . and loaning us money.
What a joke.
herr dubyah is blaming the Dems for high gas prices.....go figure.
L.A. Confidential @ 37:
I was also a time when politicians actually did what they were supposed to be doing!
"Multi-millionaire farmers"? Where are these folks?
theWalrus @ 44:
Indeed
What McCain's comments may also do is to push Russia and China closer into a military/economic alliance. If that were to occur India, having strong ties to both Russia and China may just join in at some point. Imagine a full alliance with all three being economic powers, Russian technology along with a massive Chinese/Indian manufacturing base producing everything from tanks to ships. If my scenario comes to pass that cold war will be one that the United States and its allies will more than likely lose.
ACTION ALERT from VoteVets!
You saw Keith O's Deserting the Troops about McCain's watered-down GI bill. Well, VoteVets has a really good instant letter-writing page that lets you fire off your letter to lots of papers. It remembers all your info, so do it once, then just copy, paste and send. It's real easy:

Thanks for the info Mike. I'm a vet and a supporter of votevets and McCain's watered down GI bill is one of my peves.
herr dubyah has his way and the majority for nearly 8 years, yet it's always someone else's fault.
Russia is one the most dynamic and robust economies happening now.
Expel Russia from G8 so we appear taller John?
with mccain as president the complete collapse of america is assured.
which is why i think it's a great idea for him to be president.
let's be honest, this country isn't what it used to be and people who still scream that its' the greatest in the world don't have a clue as to what they're saying.
i think it could be again, but only after hitting rock bottom.
mccain = rock bottom.
"So?" - Dick Cheney, 2008.
Why worry about it - McCain's all but been elected, anyway. Hillary will screech and harpy and bully her way into the Dem nomination, then Rove and the Republicans will obliterate her in the Fall, with the help of Bill's past along with her own, and her dubious present record. Done. Deal.
In fact, I'm not sure McCain didn't make some kind of "deal" to get where he is today, with Cheney or with Satan - who, as we know, are one in the same. We're all fucked, cold war or terrorist attack, it don't matter.
President McCain - get used to it. [And "Vice-President Rice," though I don't want to go out on a limb here.]
I repeat: "So?"

I was trying to watch the press conference - just couldn't take it.
Stumbling, blaming, misinformation, blah blah blah
L.A. Confidential @ 54:
Agreed and we can see that just by looking at the currency exchange rates. In late 2004 the Russian Rouble was trading at or around 35,000 Roubles to 1 U.S. Dollar. Today, the exchange rate is 23.67 Roubles to 1 U.S. Dollar. For the Rouble, that is a HUGE improvement in purchasing power. That says that Russia has to be doing something right economically and it is showing.

Bush just used a "fancy word". DANG!
Run the numbers. Dropping the federal tax on gas at the end of the day, you won't be able to even get an extra gallon after filling up.
Oh.My.God. This is embarrassing.
Ah yes, let's go pump in ANWAR.
And that whole gax tax fix is a joke. The only people that will benefit from this are the corporations.

Wow. The guy feeding Bush statistics through his wireless mic seems to know a lot.

Are you all proud to be Americans right now?

Iran!
I can't watch the presser here - has Bush tap-danced yet?
Who the F just asked that question about Congress blocking everything Bush wants...???
L.A. Confidential @ 74:
The equation can take many twists and turns down the road but inevitably the Government, through the Federal Reserve will have to monetize that debt themselves. In other words, "print" the money to cover those liabilities. This will lead to higher and higher price inflation which will then drive the dollar's value to close to nothing. When that happens, hyperinflation sets in (I.E. prices rise about 400% and beyond). We have seen this same thing happen in many nations throughout history.
theWalrus @ 64:
Insightful and well said... Bu$h has always been this way. The puppetmasters are the ones we need to take down. And we need to do it fast!

Think of it this way: at least no one is paying attention to what the old man is saying. Like that crazy uncle in the attic. Except we need to make sure he stays in the attic.
I watched a little of bush's press conference (can't stand watching him) and he blamed CONGRESS for all of the bullsh*t that he started or won't deal with. This man is gonna kill us with the repubs' blessing. If they "select" that old man to be president, we ARE gonna die just trying to survive.

Despite all this, McCindy$$ is 48% in the polls?

Yeah, talk about invading Iran, pushing out Russia and pissing off China is a real good move. Especially since we Owe Trillions to the them and have depleted our military.

Yeah, I saw the press conference. That was pretty much his stance, until he yelled at a reporter.
After that I turned it off. He's enough of a embarrassment for me.

Just think about the absurdity of his statement. It took us 50 years of stupidty to get to the point where we could even consider being friends with the Russians. This guy wants to warp us back in time 50 years. Talk about a guy that is not comfortable in the world in which he lives. I would not be surprised if McCain started pushing seperate but equal or any number of debunk schools of thought. This is the problem with electing old people. They simply do not understand the real world. God bless their souls. We all love that crazy grandpa of ours, that blurts out stupid things about Germans and Japs at embarrassing moments; but, do you really put a person like that in the most powerful position on earth. What's sad is that this is a catch. McCain's policies get so little scrutiny in the MSM.
how convenient of mcfuckhead to try and exclude two countries that
actually will have more influence over world power than the USA in
the near future. russia now has great influence and china is becoming
the leading world economic power. which of the world powers that
can control the food supply, will control power over everyone. countries
can develop viable energy alternatives, but without food, there is no
power. America needs to wake up and remove those in the gop who
have very narrow elite egocentric visions and open to the reality, we
are a very fragile nation now after the criminal bush/cheney administration.
It's a Fellini movie with a heaping helping of Peckinpah and a dash of Chucky for good measure.
More proof that the MSM is run by Republicans.
I am confused. I understand the disdain for Bush. I have no argument there. What I dont get is the hatred for McCain. I am not a republican and I am not a democrat. I am 100% right in the middle. I know right off the bat that some democratic rube will rip me simply for not drinking their kool-aid. That is fine. Rip away. I already got the same thing from the republicans. I have treaded into their waters with the same question regarding Obama. What I am looking for is an intelligent answer to why NOT McCain. My son said he was "pro war". Some of the posts here say the same thing. I dont believe anyone is actually "Pro war". I would agree that he might be considered NOT anti-war. Where Obama would be considered "anti-war". However, "pro-war" seems more like media spin much like calling a person who believes in Pro-choice a baby killer. In a few months I have a choice to make. I have not yet decided who I am voting for. I have ruled out Hillary. I find it funny that she is campaigning for a change when in reality it would only be more of the same thing just 8 years later. The last few years, the economy has fallen. Yet, two years ago I voted for a democrat. He won. In fact, a bunch of democrats won. Last I checked, they control the house and the senate. If that is the case, then what change am I looking to create? Do I want to change back to the republican house and senate or does Bush really have that much control and removing him will make everything all better?
The hardcore republicans hated McCain a few months ago but today they "love" him (or so it seems). They seem hypocritical are they voting for the party or the person. I am voting for the person. Now I am reading that if Hillary or if Obama dont get the endorsement, they will simply not vote. I like the passion these people seem to have for their chosen candidate. I hope they honor their statements. I dont have that passion. I want someone who is liberal to give me a couple reasons why McCain is so "evil". Telling me he is evil because he is republican is ignorant and only proves to me that you cant think on your own and that you need an entire party of people to tell you how to vote.
calgarylady@45;
Yes, that is exactly what it's turning into down here... Jesus Christ on a pogostick, this old fart now wants to get into an economic spitting contest with Russia and China thereby assuring the ressurection of the cold war in all it's mutual assured destruction glory...Meanwhile we ain't even got a dime not already partially owned by China now, to spare for that kind of MIC wetdream anymore. Not that this fact would stop this administration from demanding another blank check from congress to buy weapons and kill people with anyway...........
And I cannot explain or excuse the American media's derelection and complete abandonment of their impartial reporting responsibilities as exampled by the complete disregard and/or papering over of these McCain statements and plans while foisting and eggagerating anything Clinton/Obama which in most cases is just superficial bullshit? the Reverend Wright, and his views, Bill the new Clinton pitbull and can Hillary keep him under control... BULL-FUCKING-SHIT! Obamas stating the obvious about bitterness? All of that pablum while McCain continually shows his lack of presidential credibility and the press ignores it..
I think we can at least all agree on this forum that a McCain presidency would be the absolute worst thing to have follow the Bush trainwreck... both for America and the world. Would someone paa-leeeze (preferably a young boy of say 18) give that senile old fucker a blowjob in a public toilet, film it and send it to all the media outlets, so we could at least get the press to maybe take an honest look at this jerkwad and his insane policy ideas to perpetuate the Bush insanity??? The MSM obviously doesn't care about the phony war hero story he's been putting out there forever, they don't care about the Keating five scandal, but they will beat the early 90's Clinton land deal into the ground one more time and will villify Obama's name and upbringing ad nuseum...
So yea, evidently it going to take a nekkid McCain with a boy in his lap to smack these MSM tools upside the head in a way that will focus something other than fawning attention on that old fuck...........Actually, Fellini could probably write something as insane as this shit.. But I don't know that he could sell it as believable if we hadn't already been living thru it these last eight years....................JD

Clueless @ 147:
McCain is pro-war in the sense that he supports continuing the Iraq war for the far into the foreseeable future, he's pro-war in the sense that he supports military action against Iran at a time when our military is already stretched to the breaking point by the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This article indicates that he's taking an antagonistic stance against both China and Russia, which is foolish to say the least. He has made a number of gaffes which lead me and a lot of others to think that he's poorly informed about a lot of critical foreign policy issues. Based on all of this his foreign policy is enough to ensure that I won't be voting for him.
As far as domestic policy goes he himself says that he doesn't know much about the economy, He has in the past opposed a federal minimum wage, he supports keeping and expanding the Bush tax cuts which have been disastrous for our economy. He has also recently cozied up to the religious right in an attempt to solidify his position within the Republican party, if you're uncomfortable with the Republican's efforts recently to narrow the divide between church and state this is a worrying development
Then there are the more personal issues, a number of reports indicate that he has a nasty temper when he doesn't get his way, this is certainly not the worst thing about his candidacy but it could lead to some embarrassing moments when attempting to work with foreign leaders or for that matter with a Congress that's almost certain to be dominated by Democrats. In addition he has in the past opposed the establishment of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a holiday on both the state and federal levels and he recently referred to the Vietnamese as "gooks," obviously the latter is somewhat understandable considering his experiences during the Vietnam War but again the attitude that these actions suggest may lead to embarrassments when dealing with minorities or foreign representatives. Then of course there's the fact that at 72 if he wins he will be the oldest person ever to take office as president so there's the risk that we could have a repeat of the last years of the Reagan administration should, God forbid, something happen to his health.
And of course there's the problem of consistency. I mentioned earlier that he's been establishing close ties with the religious right, this is after he referred to them as "agents of intolerance" during his 2000 campaign. Among other examples of McCain changing his position seemingly for no reason other than solidifying his position within the party is his recent vote against a bill that would require the CIA to only use interrogation methods that abide by the Geneva Conventions, this after spending almost his entire career as a vocal opponent of torture.
There's a lot of problems with McCain, whether you're approaching his campaign from the left, the right or the center and while I'm sure there are some out there that oppose him for irrational reasons rest assured that there are real reasons not to vote for him.
McCain is a very dangerous man, in the same league as Bush and Cheney.
McCain has never gotten over his intense anger about being a POW in a North Vietnamese prison for five years, tortured.
Fellow POWs report that this was when McCain first mentioned his presidential aspirations. I can imagine his fantasies. How one day he'd have the power to "get back" at the people holding him captive (the "gooks," a name he still calls them today) and those Communist countries supporting the "gooks" (Russia (old Soviet Union) and Communist China).
We all know that McCain has a revenge streak and a raging temper, so it wouldn't surprise me, if he were elected president, that he would pull some stunt that would trigger World War III.
