Are all Democrats better than all Republicans? Well... it wasn't always that way, but it sure is these days, at least in Congress. Not counting some pretty decent mainstream Republican governors, like Charlie Crist in Florida and Sarah Palin in Alaska, something frighteningly partisan has taken hold of the GOP. It's like America's interests takes a back seat to the narrow ideological purity of their increasingly right wing, neo-Con/neo-Confederate caucuses. But that doesn't take the onus off Democrats who are almost as reactionary. The Inside the Beltway Republicans want to give the Executive branch the authority to order warrantless wiretaps plus hand them retroactive immunity for Bush Regime cronies and possible criminals among telecom industry executives. Quite a few individual grassroots Republicans are alarmed at both prospects.

And then there are the right-of-center Democrats, mostly Blue Dogs, (Chris Carney is one) who, out of fear, are enabling Republicans. Today Glenn Greenwald over at Salon pieces together how Steny Hoyer is working with the Blue Dogs to give Bush just what he's looking for. C&L is working with Glenn and the rest of Blue America to raise some money to hold a Blue Dog accountable. Over 1,000 of our readers have pitched in so far. All those $5 and $10 and $20 contributions have raised over $57,000 so far, almost $10,000 today. If you can... let's make sure the Blue Dogs know that there are Democrats who don't favor retroactive immunity and who don't favor warrantless wiretaps of American citizens. We will be heard on this! You can Donate here...

John Amato: We've been very effective so far when we run a campaign like this and I wanted to say thanks once again for all your help.

Frist on Friday night!!

We already won this battle and the media moved on. Why would the blue dogs fold?

bloody their noses.

Just got my "stimulus" check today. Sent a big chunk of it for this cause. That ought to stimulate sumthin'. The rest goes to the Democratic Party.

it's time to take these dogs hunting.

Time to pay up. You can afford it. Just buy two six packs the next time you go to the store so you can save the ten bucks by not having to make another trip when you run out. That will save you $10.00 right there. Burp.

Steny Hoyer is a traitor of the first order. Trouble with Democrats is they are their own worst enemy. I wish I could leave. I wish I could leave. I wish I could leave. Problem is the rest of the world doesn't want us. Anybody who rewards the Democrats for doing nothing is as dumb as a rock. Buy a solar panel or something don't give your money to a party that isn't worth a dam.

The terror watch list has grown to over a million names. I am sure that the majority of the names come from the warrant-less wire tapping program. Almost all of these people are just average Americans that have sent an eyebrow raising e-mail to a friend or posted a nasty message online. Instead of a handful of real terrorists, the FBI is now watching over a million plus average Americans.

This warrant-less wiring tapping program is going to be one of the root causes of our next "intelligence failures".

Economy mustn't be too bad if you can afford to throw money away to politicians.

I'm not cashing my "stimulus check" until after the November Election. I like to call it my "Xmas" check.

Donated and I am poor as a church mouse.

The blue dogs live down there with the red dogs who are calling all this the act of traitors.

They have been hoodwinked.

Bushco are the terrorists. We need more Patriots of the Constitution to step forward.

Down with the barbarians.

Cash it now!...cuz when one considers the way inflation is lately...it'll be worth 1/2 as much (in november) ...invest in gold, Halliburton, or Exxon.

Ain't it a bitch that we are asked to pony-up bucks to get things done by our representatives.

Yeah, that's right. Invest in the suffering of millions and the destruction of the environment. Way to go, bub.

One of the few good Democratic pushes thus far remains one of the most important. Until they have immunity, telecoms face some serious consequences for destroying records of what conservative Bushies have done in spying on this country for their own gain. Once immunity is granted, they start hitting the delete button and shredding records as fast as they can. Even fighting for delay allows more discovery, and discovery is what they fear.

Keep up the good fight! Blue Dogs are not to be feared. Democrats need only to block this. Without Democratic betrayal (like Rockefeller, Hoyer, Reid, etc.), we win this fight.

No. You support the people who will do a better job of representing you, and you boot the rest.

By the way, Canuck and Stymie, this is our system. We haven't come up with a better one yet. So until someone does, it's important to make our voices heard even if that translates into money donations.

It kinda makes you wonder what Bush is trying to hide. The stuff that we already know is pretty sick.

I think George Bush and his followers have been eating people. I really do think that they are all cannibals.

It kinda makes sense.

Usually when serial killers build a dungeon and torture their victims; at a certain point, they do resort to eating their victims.

Bush and Cheney think that if they eat the flesh of their victims then they become zombie slaves in the afterlife.

here is something that everyone is missing about these "wireless wiretaps" and "retroactive immunity"

it goes much deeper then "protecting our constitutional rights" or "invading our privacy"

we need protections against this type of behavior from government officials to protect the information we are most proud, not really to guard the information we are most embarrassed

without these protections a government "official" using the cover of his office can steal your patent ideas, plagiarize your manuscripts, find out your business sources, what you pay for product and who you buy, what you are willing to pay, who you sell to at what price.

in other words, without these protections "officials" can steal from you and they can do it legally

those are only some of the reasons, the reasons are legion

democrats and progressives need to frame this debate along those lines, this is a much more forceful point to be made and it strikes at the republican brand;

"why do you want someone who works for the government given the legal authority to steal from you?"

you see this?...that is the most effective method of convincing those that think "if you've done nothing wrong you have nothing to hide"

"the only people that have nothing to hide are failures"

now, if we allow "retroactive immunity" that means any information criminals have gathered, no matter what intellectual property they have stolen, they can keep and there will be no redress

these are the proper methods for discussion this issue

Off Topic. MSNBC, CNN, CBS Still don't have McCain's remarks about Iraq on there web pages. I'm starting to get pissed. It was constant coverage about Wright, but nothing about McCain. If it were a Democrat...

The point is our representatives should be standing up to Bush, and we shouldnt have to pay "extra" to get our representatives to follow their oath to the constitution

Sometimes logic can be carried too far. It's possible this may be one of those times. While I'm willing to concede that Bush and Cheney may be pulling a Sweeney Todd, the zombie slave thing might be a little much. Or not...

Without immunity, the BushCo's know their ass is hanging in the wind when the next administration and Atty. Gen. come in. Many of these GOP assholes could be lookin' at some serious jail time. That's why this issue will never go away, until the minute Chimpy leaves office.

The real destruction of the repukes may not take place in November, but may come after the people see just what the hell they did during their eight years of traitorous behavior. Especially if half of them end up in prison.

My thoughts exactly.

I sure hope enough progressive/liberals are elected in November, to cause complete leadership changes in both houses of congress! Soooooooo sick of these repuke-lites!

Steny Hoyer, now you know how Bush got elected twice.
*How wonderful*

We need a recount in PA. I have never understood that state. Do they live in the 21st century U.S.? Somebody named Carney actually has power? And then there is Hoyer. Maryland, is anyone out there? Are you that naive? I guess.

I agree... A most exellent post indeed!

decent mainstream Republican governors, like Charlie Crist in Florida

You mean that bozo who just shut down the Florida League of Women Voters, who's mission is to help the poor, seniors and shut-ins exercise their right to vote?

Mainstream my arse... SOURCE

He talks a good talk, but when it MATTERS, he is a scumbag like all (R)s.

Are all Democrats better than all Republicans? Well… it wasn’t always that way, but it sure is these days, at least in Congress.

Howie! Are you out of your mind? The 110th has sucked nearly as badly as the 109th, and DON'T give me that wussy ass excuse about not having the votes. There are innumerable reasons that statement is completely incoherent, but just the bald fact that they won't uphold the Constitution and impeach criminals because they might lose makes it an outright lie!

Frist is the Republican Governor who manipulated the change of dates for the Democratic Primary against Party rules, knowing the threat of disinfranchisement. He refused to sign a bill for paper-ballot backup if the Primary move clause were removed. In my opinion, Crist is not being held accountable for a most outrageous and open act of VOTE TAMPERING ever conducted. And yet Crist continues to receive accolades like "decent mainstream Republican governors" All I can say is I was fooled for a while too.

The GOP has always been frighteningly partisan - and since Ronnie Raygun, they don't even care if it flies in the face of common sense - and they've proven to be right because common sense has no sway over the average American voter. America's interests have been taking a back-seat to Republican interests for better than 25 years - and this will continue until the American voters come to their senses and realize they need to kick the party in the chops for everything they've done to political discourse in this country - never mind the damage they've done to the country itself.

Republicans don't care about the country - at all. They only care about power and how much money they can raid from the treasury.

Charlie Christ is not a moderate republican. I wish people would stop spreading that lie. He ran as a phony populist type republican and since then has done nothing but run around with McLame, and let the idiots in the Florida leg. cut benefits for the poor and disabled.
take care
tony and guidedog Lido
otherwise no surprises, I know Hoyer talks a good talk but is really a DLCer all the way

at the risk of mispells and incorrect spaceing might i say thier all in it together, use your head, if we can see that the democrats allready have the power to end these wars but refuse to use the ability to cut off funding for it should tell you something , thier not worried about any hardships to the troops only about loseing thier war profits! they know that you voted them in to end this war one way or another ,so its in your face folks ! you got no place else to go you cant vote repig and when you vote for these same assholes you put in ,in 06 , so enjoy the ride as tony saprano would say as his boys drive you out to the boonies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is pretty simple really. No president or administration has the right to tell anyone to BREAK THE LAW. As many lawyers as these people have knew better so NO they do not deserve any immunity. Now I'm not too good with words but LAWS WERE IN PLACE TO GET PERMISSION TO WIRE TAP IF AND I SAY IF WE NEEDED TO. Just no use to even talk about this. Mr. Hoyer needs to say NO,NO,NO,NO,NO!!!!! The scary part about all of this is Republicans and Democrats are so intertwined just to help themselves achieve wealth that we will never know out of 150 or so made the most money from war profits and etc. So sad that all this coming out little by little. Well, I think the LITTLE PEOPLE ARE GOING TO CHANGE SOME THINGS SOON!!!!!! No. 24,42,43, GREAT ARTICLE!!!!

The very existence of Chris Carney goes a long way toward explaining how Hillary won Pennsylvania.

Hoyer is simply corruption incarnate.

We have to get Rid of StenKy Hoyer. This guy is so Bought that he should be at the GOP. Convention .

storm @ 52:

We have to get Rid of StenKy Hoyer. This guy is so Bought that he should be at the GOP. Convention .

Agreed. Nothing new here!

Nancy Pelosi's most notable achievement has been to take impeachment off the table. Two years later, and Bush has been allowed to continue virtually unobstructed. The Bushit clock will have run out soon, and we can start marking Democratic-Friedman units (at least, 180 coalition and 10 thousand Iraqi deaths per unit).

Harry Reid ignominiously cowered when faced by the neocons with regard to FISA immunity and even blocked Democratic movements. It's not resolved yet, but it looks to me as if he has passed the baton (or something tube-like) to Steny. If that doesn't work, there are several other ways for it to slide through.

Postscript: Obama is afraid to debate!

Steny, Steny, Steny...or should I call you Stinky, Mr. Hoyer???
