Jon Stewart opens "Panderer's Box"
Jon Stewart has some fun at Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton's expense as he mocks them for shamelessly pandering to North Carolina and Indiana voters before the primaries.

"With a race this tight, the candidates are pulling out all the stops, and are forced to open....Panderer's Box."

That was great. You guys should also put on Olbermann's segment last night where he mocked the Clinton campaign's idea of what voters matter and which don't. It was very enlightening.
Writers of The Half-Hour News Hour hang their heads in shame.
Politics really is only suitable for comedy.
There's pandering and then there's PANDERING.
It's not like Obama or Clinton were SEEKING Rev Hagee's endoresment or anything that extreme.
He pretty much nailed it, as usual. What I've been saying for weeks. She is literally McSame (Carbon Clinton?).
I'm afraid of what is going to happen if she is elected and the Clinton's have to go about repaying $109 million worth of favors.
Hillary's right. When it comes to the economy, don't listen to economists with their elitist degrees.
Dan @ 5:
Exactly!!
As for Jon and TDS, another BRILLIANT segment! Thanks...
And let's not forget Old Man McCain, Who Seeks a Three-Month Holiday on His Own Gas

Jon Stewart opens “Panderer’s Box”
I'm sure Panderer does it all the time with just her fingers.
Penderer's Box was opened when all 3 candidates appeared on pro wrestling last month, and they all said very dumb things.

unfunny conservatives trying to be funny. that failure was funny in a cosmic sort of way.
It is driving me crazy to listen to the corporate media saying that Hillary is going to cut out the gas tax! How??? It will never pass the senate, Bush would never sign it, it is a dumb idea, we had our bridge collapse where I live because funds went elsewhere and they used bandages to "fix" the bridge, never mind the people that will be out of work ( even if there was a chance it could pass! ) Please someone besides me SCREAM to corporate media to ask some hard questions and quit saying " Hillary is going to cut the price of gas" ... It ain't gonna happen folks and we ALL should know it!!!
and the hillary-accent...
she does realize that these events are filmed, yes?
i can't support hillary... i just can't do it and live with myself. i think so little of her and her campaign, there is no way i could lend my support to her candidacy
Rusty Shackleford @ 2:
I never saw it, but I'm telling ya-that's what makes left of center folks so funny. They make fun of those who are [ostensibly] their own, when they're being asshats.
From what I've seen of right of center's sense of humour, the would gnaw off a limb before poking fun at one of their own. And they make fun of the wrong things on the other side. Hence, not funny.
Samson- @ 14:
Yeah-I was very struck by the changing accent. Mine changes when I'm around people that talk a certain way-for a couple of months, at least. And I think it's safe to assume she hasn't been in one place for more than a few hours over the last 6 months or so.
miss_kitty @ 15:
If they had written this sketch it would have consisted of making fun of Hillary's laugh and five minutes of Jeremiah Wright video.
miss_kitty @ 15:
MC ROVE!!!1
Samson- @ 14:
Yes, it was embarrassing to me watching Hillers do that.
My wife asked what did Jon mean by "Is she Madonna?"
Madonna was pandering to Britain when she first got married to Guy Ritchie. ok, I end my TMZ moment.
Hillary and McCain's proposal is simply stupid. 18 cents? big deal! Wow! I save $30 a year. That, and with my rebate check, I'll go buy a fur coat!
miss_kitty @ 15:
The reason the Republicans can put together a great comedy show is because they're trying to defy simple comedy logic.
#1 - You have to laugh up, and not down. Meaning if you are rich, it's not funny to laugh at the poor. But if you're poor, it's funny to laugh at the rich. Regardless of what McCain and Clinton says, the Republicans are the party of the Elitist and those on top financially and in terms of power. Therefore it's funny to mock and laugh at them.
#2 - You have to be able to laugh at yourself. The Republicans are always angry and filled with hate. They take themselves too seriously and treat everything like a life and death situation. That's why the fear card works with them. People on the left don't can find the humor in tragedy and make lemonade out of lemons. That's why most successful comedian historically have left-leaning ideals and principles. Dennis Miller was already struggling to be funny, but when he went over to the right after 9/11, his career just flat out died.
You can hire the best writers in Hollywood to write for Fox News, but 90% of their jokes will fall flat to the universal public because how can your project humor through the ideals of fear and hate?
miss_kitty @ 16:
exactly, it is the definition of pandering, almost to the point of mocking. when she out-drawls a southerner, or out-'simple'-folk-talk rural indianians (is that right? indianians?), it is dangerously close to being insulting. ok, to be honest, it is insulting. insulting that she and her cadre of plotters assume that they can pretend she is the hometown girl, in every single hometown she visits.
and then there is bill.... can you say trainwreck?
So much for the "liberal" media.
Would you see right wingers make fun at the expense of their own.
I watched it last night...I was laughin my ass off whilst simultaneously shakin my head at Obama and Clinton...The Colbert report was friggin great too!
P.D. @ 20:
...or more gas.
I am curious if Hillary will think of leaving the Democratic party after August, like Joe Nomentum. She is clearly using Rethuglican tactics and espousing their idiocratic philosophy.
liberalHUSSEINmoderation @ 24:
i think he's being pretty flagrantly pro-obama. which is fine with me. he's mocking hillary clinton but with obama he's actually making fun of the double-standard -- if he misses the basket, he's a posing elitist, but if he makes the basket he's an angry black militant. when all he's actually doing is shooting baskets. shows he can't win with the media double-standard.
and the gas-tax thing is a big loser for clinton, i like how he really sticks it to her on that but obama really comes off looking pretty clean in this.
Liberal, I'm about ready to do all my shopping on my bike. I have already limited my shopping and other errands to once a week. (Except running the kids around) I really think Americans better be prepared. They just will not be able to afford gas anymore. I hope they are ready. With neutered politicians willing to do nothing, we screwed.
mike @ 27:
You're right...he's pretty much done everything but openly declare support for Obama, I think it's only a matter time before he does.
P.D. @ 20:
You probably wouldn't save anything. Demand will increase, supply is low already, and the oil companies will simply increase the price to what it was before the tax was cut.
Hillary is just a total embarrassment at this point. You expect this kind of thing from Republicans.
P.D. @ 28:
Indeed we are. Peak oil is still only a theory, yet we have gas prices through the roof while oil companies make record profits. Now it's food shortages because crops are going to hybrid cars. How many people reading this use fuel from grown resources? It's manufactured hype intended to part you from your money.
Watching politicians pander to voters makes me think they're going to do the same to oil and other corporate interests. Not painting a hopeful picture.... Clinton is getting more terrifying by the day.
26 suvro
Hillary's calling for a Windfall tax on gas profits both to help cover the cost of a summer moratorium on federal gas taxes, as well, as to curb some of the excessive profits.
Hillary's health plan would cover children and ADULTS, while Obama is generally using her health plan, but to cover children only.
That to you sounds like a republican?
as usual, Jon is spot on.
Listening to Hillary, she sounds just like a Republican! Siding with McCain against Obama. Using Rovian tactics, and of course, her extreme rhetoric. She may think it appeals to the Independants. But it really backfired. Shame is, I don't think she knows it.
Ace @ 33:
He better have the spot looked at
Make sure it's benign.
I just saw on the financial channel, crude will be $200 by the end of the year. I guess we all have to get horses or mopeds. How much does it cost to feed a horse?
oh, she knows what she is doing...

Have you tried wearing boxers?
What nobody says about the gas tax scheme is that it would put around 300,000 highway and maintenance employees out of work (not to mention the continued decline in infrastructure).
Really - do Hillary or McCain really understand what taxes pay for?
Neo people are not funny because they fit in with everyone else like a square peg in a round hole. They have always been outsiders to be made fun of because of the way they think and act, which answers the question of why they hate everyone and everything. Spoiled little rich brats who have to have their way at any cost! to yesbad@11 Hang-em high!
yep, ysbaddaden, still there.
Brendan @ 31:
We will wind up with Clinton or McCain and the corporate elites will exhale a sigh of relief.
Gays will continue to be bashed and gay marriage prevented...and the fundies will exhale a sigh of relief.
The black man will have been stopped and the xenophobes and rednecks will exhale a sigh of relief.
Samson- @ 22:
As a reformed hoosier, I can tell you that her folksy Arkansan accent does not sound much like a southern Indiana accent, so it definitely sounds like someone who's simply posing. Very weak.
to yesbad@38 Man your wit is sure rollin today, you made me fall out of my chair, thanks ! ceo.
All politicians pander, left, right and middle. Clinton does it. Obama does it. McCain does it. You were expecting something else in a presidential election?
Peter G @ 45:
True, but as in "Spaceballs", there's pandering and then there's "ludicrous pandering". HRC has achieved the latter (McLame was there in 2000).

it's kind-of his schtick to never support a candidate outright, but it's always been clear to me what his opinion on just about any issue is, you just have to read between the lines. being pro-obama myself, it's hard for me to mind.

Practicing lawyers know it's dicey to play it too folksy with people. You actually have to stay at a slighter higher level of speaking so one you sound professional, two you're not talking way above their heads and appearing elitist, and three you don't insult them.
Black's Law Dictonary is full of Latin legal phrases you'll rarely hear in court, although they might appear in legal memos, motions, briefs and orders. For some odd reason though Real Estate is more Saxon.
Blue Lensman @ 46:
Hmm. Yes and no. I'm an atheist and I don't see how anyone with an IQ higher than a fern can believe any of that nonsense. The only reason I can stomach any of the hypocrisy is that I realize that a politician who fails to pay lip service to some denomination is totally unelectable. Obama has been faking it as long as anyone else. If I weren't convinced that he's faking it I couldn't support the man.
JeffS @ 30:
If Hillary is elected, she will turn her back on all of these promises. She's a lying manipulator and is corporate owned. Of course blue collar white people support her. That's because most of them are woefully ignorant.
Anyone who thinks this Gas-tax repeal will help them or even pass Congress is an idiot. Last time I checked, she wasn't president and had only one vote in the Senate.
Folks, too many times I've seen the sheeple of this country drink the snake oil that's being sold.
Follow the money and you will find the masters of any politician. Hillary's masters sit in big corporate boardrooms. The same boardrooms that screwed you in the first place.
Here's the hillarious part:
Clinton feels my pain at the pump, yet she can't operate a pump.
Or use a coffee machine.
But she can speak in a new-found Southern accent.
And you trust this person to help you?
That was genius...pure genius!
The whole "I'm regular people like y'all" thing was insulting enough three months ago. Its gotten worse by stunning proportions.
Dismissing Nobel Laureates' opinions because they are "elite"?
I seriously thought we had enough of that with the current administration.
Jon was right to ask the question, What has happened to her? I wonder the same thing.
I gotta tell you that was one funny clip. Thanks so much, Silent Patriot, for posting it.
Is she gonna say "nuc-ul-ur" next ...
"What's happened to that woman?"
As Stewart says, "Nailed it."

Driving up demand and, in turn, driving the price of gas back up. Who wins? The oil companies as they reap the profits.
Mister Anderson @ 21 said:

I think that's a good point and one reason why conservative "humor" so often fails to please anyone except its own fellow travelers: It usually is laughing down. Put differently, it's not humor, it's condescending mockery.
A related point is that while left wing humor often resorts to the saber, chopping and hacking, it also knows how to use the quick, sharp thrust of the rapier. Right wing "humor," on the other hand, almost always relies on the bludgeon, lacking all traces of subtlety or wit. For a good illustration, simply compare Doonesbury - or better yet and as a political example more accurate, Tom Tomorrow - with Mallard Fillmore.
mike @ 48:
And to that I must say....WORD!
Notice that it's "Panderer's Box" (singular = Shillary) as opposed to Panderers' Box (plural).
I only hope that the voters of Indiana and North Carolina were watching this clip.
Move over, Merle Streep, you have competition in the accents department!

Olbermann Defines Hillary's Goalposts
HRC=GWB
What? The nepotism wasn't enough of a clue?
I am so ready to be pandered to. It's about time. When was the last time that happened, anyway? She can pander us right into universal health care, I say.
RobertD @ 59:
Spot on RobertD! And it's not like demand is going to be going down in the near, or distant, future! We spoiled as Americans think cheap gas is our right? Well, here's our wakeup call!!!
HRC=Republican light.
Hillary's campaign strategy of appealing to the lowest common denominator is so Rovian. Look at all the right wing hacks cheering Clinton on. You know there is something wrong when the GOPers start cheering for you. It is kind of like in football when a player picks up the ball and runs the wrong way into their own endzone. Clinton is basically saying the voters are stupid enough to believe her gas tax cut proposal is actually a solution. Then, Clinton criticizes Obama for criticizing her plan while saying he has no plan. Time and time again we heard this from the Republican controlled Congress on countless issues.
Just a little longer til May 20th and Hillary will concede.
ok i watched this twice and i didn't see any pandering at all from Obama.
maybe you could explain, john?
Rusty Shackleford @ 2:
What's 'The Half-Hour News Hour"? Never heard of it .
P.D. @ 34:
"olbliterate" Iran! says Hillary. I don't think she is getting it. Many Americans are tired of the this administration and Israel using the threat of "obliteration" instead of negotiations. The tide is shifting on Israel being able to toss their nuclear biological and chemical weapon weight around in the middle east, demanding that every other nation do as they say and not as they do.
Obama gets it. Folks are starting to talk out loud about the Israeli Palestinian conflict and the disproportionate amount of power and influence that Israel has on our foreign policy. Folks are not backing down when claims of "anti semitism" are thrown out to shut down the dialogue.
Don't forget we helped overthrow a democratically elected leader in Iran during the 50's.
bill w @ 72:
Exactly!
