McCain 'kind of like Jesus Christ on the cross'
By Steve Benen Monday May 19, 2008 10:00pmThere’s been talk for years that many Bush supporters believe he was literally chosen by God to be president. We don’t hear as much about this lately — God wanted a U.S. president who would screw up everything he touches? — but the notion of divine intervention on behalf of Republicans has been a relatively common sentiment in far-right circles for quite a while.
That said, direct comparisons between Republican candidates and Jesus are still rather unusual. (via mcjoan)
Georgia Republican Party chairwoman Sue Everhart said Saturday that the party’s presumed presidential nominee has a lot in common with Jesus Christ.
“John McCain is kind of like Jesus Christ on the cross,” Everhart said as she began the second day of the state GOP convention. “He never denounced God, either.”
Everhart was praising McCain for never denouncing the United States while he was being tortured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
“I’m not trying to compare John McCain to Jesus Christ, I’m looking at the pain that was there,” she said.
Right, of course. She’s not “trying to compare” McCain to Jesus, she’s just says he’s “kind of like Jesus.” The distinction is obvious. And sacrilegious.
Atrios added, “I’m not Christian so it doesn’t really matter much to me who is casually compared to their Lord And Savior, but still.”

My God, My God, why have you abandoned me?
Is she also comparing the USA to God?
I just learned that Hamilton Jordon has passed away, a person from Georgia that knew what quality in a person was and what can be done in America. Does not this passing make us think of what could have been.
Not my Jesus! Not even "kind of". Not one single solitary thing in common. Now the antichrist, maybe.
Of course McCain is a LOT like Jesus. They were classmates in grade school.
Wow, Mcclain is like Jesus Christ huh. These people never run out of kool-aid. Can't believe this is a legitimate political party.
The only thing Mc Cain and Jesus Christ have in common is that they are both about 2,000 years old- that is where the resemblance ends!
"McCain never denounced America when he was held captive".
An absolute LIE.
McCain admitted (after being tortured) that he bombed innocent civilians in North Vietnam and that he had been ordered to do so.
That is the truth of what happened. It makes McCain's support now for torturing prisoners held by the U.S. even more egregious.
Sheesh, next they're going to say he's bigger than the Beatles.
I'm not sure about this, but I believe McCain did actually sign a statement denouncing the U.S. war effort while in captivity. Obviously if he did it was done under duress and should by no means be used against him, but it would detract somewhat from his being "like Jesus." I thought Tom DeLay had the "just like Jesus Christ" franchise all sewn up anyway.
There shall be no religious test for any federal office. Get off it. Stuff it. But please expose the "End Times" radicals fawning at McCain's feet. If any of them try to wash them, I will puke.
Exit polling from Kentucky shows that white Americans would rather vote for mccain that vote for a black man. While I respect their right to chose Clinton over Obama, the fact that so many polled admit that they could not let themselves vote on a race issue is just deplorable.
Shame on Kentucky, you bring America down and are shooting yourselves in the foot.
But I thought baby bush was the new god. I guess that would make mccain bushies son, makes sense I guess.
Hopefully he'll be crucified in November (and not come back from the dead)!
More like Christ on a crutch.
Calvary/Golgotha, coming to a city near you right off the Bullshit Express. Sheesh
Hey, don't doubt for a minute that God wanted Bush to be president. This is the same dude that sent the flood, and the frogs, and that burning hail and locusts, right? He has a plan for this country: Bush is just all the plagues rolled into one.
My Candidate is MORE CHRISTIAN than Your Candidate!!

That was brilliant.
Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird . . . it's a plane . . . it's Jesus McCain!
Jesus was supposedly tortured and hung on a cross for a total of about 56 hours.
That is nothing compared to what the men who have been held in POW camps went through. Many of whom didn't live to tell the tale. Whether you do or do not like John McCain don't deny the Pow's their rightful place.
McCain is a frickin Idiot but he held up to more than this savior character did. That guy caved in less than 3 days. McaCain and many others put up with it for years. And they did it first for this nation for you and I. Maybe their mission was wrong and wrong headed but they percervered.
I'll put my faith in my fellow men and women and our unified mind at preserving freedom. Not some sheep herder. Nor some fat head politician.
Everhart is comparing the pain that McCain went through with that which Jesus went through on the cross? Gosh, I was just told in church on Sunday that no one could have known the pain that Jesus went through.
Shameful.
I wonder if there's any mileage in the "Cain" part of his name, as in Mos' Evil Brother.

Have to say that if you compare the teachings of the good Rabbi Yeshua al Nazarat with the posturings and lifestyle of McCrazy Bushbot he looks a lot more like the anti-Christ.
I don't remember ever hearing that Jesus left a wife for another woman.
Well, I AM a Christian. And I'm sick of dumb-ass Republicans using their pseudo-faith whenever they are without a rational thought.
It's time the press denounced these assholes as liars and cheats.

hahahahahahhahhahahahh.......funniest thing I've heard all day....also the most pathetic
I know this is a stupid question, but what the fuck is wrong with these people? Forget about the blasphemy, Jesus was anti-establishment, but McCain....
tr @ 38:
Curious isn't it that they would offer to send him home early precisely because he was the son and grandson of admirals. More likely the treatment he received was kid glove compared to what others got. Have you ever wondered how they even found out about his family connections? A telegram from the State Department perhaps or maybe he just told them? I wonder how that happened?
Such interjection of Religion into Politics is one of the many reasons I voted against the Bush/Cheney ticket in ‘00 and in ’04. I will do the same in ’08 when I vote against the Bush/McCain Ticket (not a mistake).
~Republican with Eyes Wide Open~
"bush-supporters" are head-in-ass crazy, so figures they'd figure he was sent from Jesus.
Damn, they have misused everything, including Christianity. I used to be proud to be a Christian, and because of those lousy sons of bitches, I'm ashamed to even admit it.
Pig-f*ckers is what they are. Plain and simple!!
no different than the media treats mcassjacket
"Everhart was praising McCain for never denouncing the United States while he was being tortured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam."
Do a little research and you'll find when McCain was a POW he cracked and gave up info, etc.
This is most likely why he has worked so hard to squash all access to info about ALL POWs,
much to the distress of the families of other ones.
But, when they time to swiftboat him arrives, I expect most all of it will see the light of day.
Well I sure hope so! A fictional candidate should be easy to beat!
Peter G @ 41:
he screwed up the bombing run, then screwed up his ejection so the vietnamese probably assumed that this incompetent pilot had to be connected to someone with pull. they knew who he was within 1 week.

I don't like McCain, I'm not even convinced he's competent... but the writing on this site is as hilariously bad as the news it tries to satire. Ok, not AS bad, but it's pretty fucking bad. The quote that said it wasn't a comparison was even posted, and he just goes "Oh yeah?! you aren't COMPARING, well I think you ARE!".
The comparison is as dumb as the fact it is being made out to be this direct comparison.
Well, I don't believe in mcstain either so they've got that in common I guess.
McCain's '97 Lobbyist Bill Would Cripple Current Campaign
May 20, 2008 02:45 PM
Senator John McCain has a lobbyist problem. This past week, as several aides resigned because of their work representing unsavory governments, his campaign implemented a new policy governing these potential conflicts of interest. That led to the departure of additional staffers, including former Rep. Thomas Loeffler, a key adviser and fundraiser.
The McCain camp has insisted that the resignations are nothing more than evidence of the Senator's sincerity in combating outside influences. But the truth, reform groups say, is far from adulatory: McCain's current policy simply doesn't compare to the ethical commitments he championed earlier in his career.
Just twelve years ago, when McCain was politically recuperating from his involvement in the Keating Five scandal, he introduced legislation that would, if implemented today, cripple his presidential campaign.
justin b @ 48:
help me out. what are you trying to say?
tr @ 47:
so he was an active fuckup, not a passive-aggressive fuckup like the shrub.
So, if John McCain is sort of like Jesus on the cross, does that mean if McCain was to shag Georgia's Republican chairwomen, he'd be like Jesus on a cracker?
Re-PIG-lics are playing to the supremely ignorant portion of their base with this crap. People who are already brain-washed sheep -- that need to be told what to do, what to think, who to vote for, etc., etc.
Unfortunately - these same sheep aren't smart enough to realize they're totally being used.

A comparison to Fidel Castro would be a better fit. The scandals are to Songbird's campaign what the assassination attempts were to Castro - legitimate attempts to get rid of him.
And, of course, I'm not advocating assassination. The distinction is obvious.
do they want to die by warfare? do they want to give their proxy to someone that tells them he will start a war? perhaps we are looking at this wrong, and the folks that support this really do believe jesus wants to kill him some cousins? the argument for evolution is pronounced.

...so, the people who were sucking their teeth in disgust, pondering what it was about mccain they didn't like, are now comparing him to Jesus on the cross? huh!?
A grossly stupid comment but not at all unusual coming from the right / Repugs . Is it any wonder the country is in such disarray and in such a frigging mess after seven and a half years of these loons ?
Chuck Hagel is quickly becoming Barack Obama's answer to Joe Lieberman.
The Republican Senator from Nebraska was a political thorn in McCain's side on Tuesday night, repeatedly lavishing praise on the presumptive Democratic candidate and levying major foreign policy criticisms at the GOP nominee and the Republican Party as a whole. At one point, Hagel even urged the Arizona Republican to elevate his campaign discourse to a higher, more honest level.
"We know from past campaigns that presidential candidates will say many things," Hagel said of some of McCain's recent rhetoric, namely his policy on talking to Iran. "But once they have the responsibility to govern the country and lead the world, that difference between what they said and what responsibilities they have to fulfill are vastly different. I'm very upset with John with some of the things he's been saying. And I can't get into the psychoanalysis of it. But I believe that John is smarter than some of the things he is saying. He is, he understands it more. John is a man who reads a lot, he's been around the world. I want him to get above that and maybe when he gets into the general election, and becomes the general election candidate he will have a higher-level discourse on these things."
Didn't McCain "sign" a confession while held captive and tortured?
Oh that's right -- people will say just about anything when they're being tortured.
Jesus Christ, the GOP is spinning the Bible now. Jesus never denounced God? How about looking in your Bible? From the King James translations, Mark Chapter 15:
Clearly the expectation of Jesus and the observers as depicted in this text was that he would be rescued by God.
I guess that means John McCain is better than Jesus. Maybe that's why the media go so easy on him. Jesus had good PR, too, and he was certainly a maverick. More reasons John McCain is like Jesus.
1) Jesus was a carpenter. John McCain would have listened to the Carpenters had he not been in a prision.
2) Jesus was born in a manger and swaddled in rags. John McCain was born in a canal zone and swaddle in Flags.
3) Jesus turned water into wine. McCain turns oil into profits.
4) Jesus turned the other cheek. John McCain had melanoma removed from the other cheek.
5) John Mcain has a freaky eyed platinum blonde wife with a jet and $100 million bucks. Jesus... Jesus... fed 5000 people with two fish and some old rolls.
6) Big Mac's mom is a saintly 96-year-old. She the one who knows John best. Jesus Mom was the Blessed Virgin Mary. No way Mac tops that. Not unluss he forms a 527 to attack Jesus' Mom and claim "She's not a virgin. She's a slut, a trollop. She's said to have serviced Bill Clinton. She should make her hymen available for public inspection. You could have a parade of "Men" and "Doctors" who give interviews on the Blessed Virgin about how freaky she gets and how Larry Flynt has a movie of mary felating Judas, but he's sitting on it because he really against free speach. The Doctors would confirm they treat Mary of all manner of issues, most interesting, ass herpes. The doctors can say Mary claims that she is still technically a "virgin" because she signed a purity pledge and agreed to not have sex... everyone know hummers and butt sex don't count.
7) Jesus raises the Dead, Mac raise the debt
8) Jesus heals the sick, Mac votes to cut off health care to kids
9) Jesus said "Blessed are the peacekeepers." Mac says we need "Bomb, Bomb Bomb, Bomb Bomb Iran." Jesus is such a pussy. And finally
10) Jesus and Bush can both claim to be doing their father's business. What McCain's Father's story? That's got to be an odd Christmas Dinner Given john is a spineless flipflopper, he must have had a overwhelming dad. Say what you think is right right now.

Wishing you could be a campaign surrogate, but don't have a national platform? Do you find blogging your own opinions tedious? Wish you could have someone tell you what to think during this political season? Well look no further than John McCain's new blog outreach!
That's right; the McCain camp wants to recruit online supporters and activists to serve as comment trolls. From their website:

mattw @ 63:
Whoa, whoa, whoa...
You're quoting the Bible back to bible-thumpers in order to prove they have selectively chosen passages to endorse a pre-determined ideological outcome while blatantly ignoring what the Bible actually says because it completely undermines their argument?
As I believe Jesus himself said: ... and the sun rises, grass is green, the sky is blue, and water turns into wine. What's your point?
here are probably many Muslims tortured during the Iraq war who didn't denounce their country. So many Jesus clones.

you know, people, the minute barack takes the oath of office, proof of you patriotism will be defined by the amount of contempt and hatred you have for the president. Gone will be the blind obedience to authority required of patriots in a time of unending war. When I read Sue's remarks, my first thought was: the jig is up. Republicans have betrayed virtually every tenant of their religion minus "tho shalt demonize anyone who disagrees with you," they still got that commandment. Come November, the voters are going to give them the political equivalent of a crucifixion by showing them the door. The true christians are sick of the gay hating, race bating, science fighting, sex loathing, poverty justifying, war mongering, secular democracy hating, god--small gee, small oh, small dee. We have looked into the eyes of their "islamofascist" enemy, and we have seen them.
Ideally, the moment Obama takes the oath of office, religion will cease to be any measure of patriotism. We will return to an America governed by the greatest document (the "Bible" INCLUDED) of all time: the U.S. Constitution.
And Bush and Cheney will be arrested for treason for the way they have subverted this hallmark of democracy. Thus, they will be held in the same light as Benedict Arnold.
**Sigh** One can only hope........
While there is nothing remotely Christlike about John McCain, comparing someone to Jesus is not considered sacrilegious among most Christians, if you sincerely believe that person is like Jesus in some way.
Which he isn't.

I won't forget a dinner conversation with a couple of Repub voters back in 2000. The conversation was around the election of GWB, and went something like this:
My Sister: "So, GWB got elected..."
GWB Voter: "Yeah, isn't it great?"
Sis: "Er... What? But he'll just be a puppet President?"
Voter: "I know, it's wonderful, isn't it?"
Sis: "... As in, he'll be controlled by the people behind him..."
Voter: "Oh no! He's a puppet of God! It'll be wonderful..."
Shoot me. Shoot me now please.
so Mccrazy is like jesus?? and chimpy is a lot like Mr Lincoln I wonder if these people are from the "special class" you know the ones that always went to the museum. what would jesus do to these to wankers I think kicking them in the nads comes to mind.
On the subject of a minister saying Goddamn America this is your proof he has damned us with a political party that has no honor and won't know compassion if it bit them.
If we want to go out on a limp this is a test for america do we as a people allow those that only think of themselves continue to set the tone of this country or do we turn a corner- but if we have people who would rather vote for Mccrazy than someone of hope and a future we are damned to continue down this path
You got it #2johnnyRocketpants. The truly scary-crazy juxtaposition is God and the USA. Obviously, if McCain is Jesus, she thinks in contrast that anyone who would have the satanic hubris to say something critical of the USA belongs in hell (Gitmo?). And everything that is not of the USA must be of Satan and will be destroyed. Or maybe the USA _is_ a manifestation of God -- which would be really hard-core Nazi, not just fascist. Would she support Saturday biblical stonings of the denouncers of America's current perfection?
This state is so hopelessly stupid, its truly impossible to quantify it/calculate it...
1st - The bubba dumb governor here in the middle of the longest/worst drought in state history...decides the action he'll take is to pray for rain... Then six months later, he tells everyone, hey...don't worry...everyone, kids fill your swimming pools this summer, corporations leave your idiotic marble fountains on, no need to turn off your sprinklers, etc., etc, etc.
The sheer magnitude of this blatant stupidity is breathtaking..... No rationing, uninforced restrictions, and let them eat cake attitude that simply exudes the basest GOP instincts of ignorance is bliss are at full speed ahead here...
2nd - They passed a bill allowing people to carry concealed weapons into restaraunts, public transit (beautiful can't imagine how happy security people are in that business), etc... I guess they figured that the first bill wasn't good enough, which allowed people to bring their guns & their problems (mental) to the workplace & to the roads of Atlanta (yep road rage will kill you around here)
3rd - They passed a bill allowing people to shoot first and ask questions later....they basically picked up the ball that Florida bounced first and ran with it...only here in good ol boy Georgia they made sure that those pesky 'imminent danger/self defense' specifics didn't need to be included as much...
I could keep going, but the republican dominated leglislature of this state speaks for itself with its mindless tax payer wasted follies/flights of fancy on a daily basis
In case you're wondering, yes I can't wait to get out of here....basically waiting on my wife....2012 can't get here soon enough. I tell right wingnuts/con-servatives that say 'don't let the door hit you', 'don't worry I'm kicking the door down on my way out'....

" The crazy juxtaposition of God and the USA" has always been very intestesting to me. I think that because a lot of religous people get that same warm, emotional feeling talking about God as about their country, they mistake their brand of patriotism for religion.
Problem with that is then you can never question why your government does something, because after all, that would be the same as questioning God.
And if you said this to most of the people who believe this way, they would be able to envision you roasting in the fourth tier of hell.
eric @ 80:
You could also get this from any of the networks that released it back in the day. I remember seeing it. It ran on them all. It was a big story when a POW denounced his country and the war. You know, it wasn't for consumption over there, it was for consumption here. There should be lots of grainy copies of it in all the major networks' film vaults.
I take it from the "I guess Bill got it for her" statement that you don't think it should be released. In a real world, where there was still respect in politics, maybe it wouldn't. You can rest assured that there will be pictures of Obama with every controversial person he ever so much as stood next to all over the map. The Reverend Wright piece will be in every commercial, and race will be an issue.
Then, if you see those films, remember that what goes 'round, comes 'round....like it or not.

I have the Wikipedia bio of McCain, dated 2/28/2008, before it was edit and it proves the lady is a liar. McCain made the following statement in August 1968, "I am a black criminal and I have performed the deeds of an air pirate. I almost died, and the Vetnamese people saved my life, thanks to the doctors." This was found on page 9 of 61 of the pre-edited bio which is no longer there. Why has this gone the way facts did in the book "1984"? You know,l dowm the truth hole.
Just questions?
♠Bangkok-Bob♠ @ 12:
Exit polling has suggested that these racists that voted for Hill and said they would never vote for Barack also had voted for Bush in both 2004 and 2006. And yet again, this exit polling suggests that Obama has been doing better with these voters than Kerry or Gore did in 04 and 00. Thus on deeper analysis, Barack may not be losing the "racist white male vote" as badly as a superficial analysis might suggest. Remember, both Gore and Kerry were extremely close in 04 and 00. Barack holding his own with white males vis a vis Gore and Kerry, while bringing in massive numbers of new voters, and also picking up some more thoughtful Republicans (yes, they exist) tells me that this is going to be a landslide come November. Most Americans are going to get there very first view on Barack in the debates because up to now they have just gotten snipits from what the news stations want them to get. Barack will then make significant inroads even with the "racists".
I think all evidence is suggesting a landslide in November...for President, the Senate, the House and maybe even Governorships. The people just might get their government back.

“I’m not trying to compare John McCain to Jesus Christ, I’m looking at the pain that was there,” she said.
So she's trying to make mccain John Lennon?

Now that I think of it, it should be:
WJPGHON?
— God wanted a U.S. president who would screw up everything he touches? —
....And he was allowed to keep going and going and going and going....Like some kind of evil Energizer Bunny...
I highly doubt God had anything to do with it. More like Satan being allowed a small season. Our Government and the Country is so F*****G broken. Sadly, a new President will not change much. More basic changes are needed:
*Remove politics from the redistricting process. The courts have ruled that political affiliation maybe considered a factor in drawing up legislative districts. Unfortunately it is more than just a factor, it's the whole ballgame. That's why incumbents rarely loose. If legislative districts were drawn into compact, contiguous units considering only population numbers, with as little disruption to county and precinct boundaries as possible, every state and Congressional seat would be put into play every election. No Party would have a lock on any district.
*Find a way to fund campaigns from public treasuries. If candidates are beholden only to the voters, that is who he/she will serve if elected to office. Don't sweat the cost. It will be a lot cheaper than having Big Oil Inc. and Big Pharma Inc. and the rest determine appropriations.
*Then the tough one...personal character. Legislators shouldn't be allowed to treat public office as just another career path. Yeah...I know...it involves having some morals, properly placed convictions and integrity. Something that is completely foreign to most politicians these days and considered laughable. Somehow they must be motivated to vote issues on the evidence and the national welfare, even at the risk of losing the next election. Maybe one way to accomplish this is a monetary rewards or something, then they wouldn't be tapping public treasuries and misappropriating public funds.
*Some good points from former IL State Senator Don Wooten.
What's the deal with this idolatry? Worshipping false idols and false images of God is supposedly against the rules, but that doesn't seem to stop the evanglesistas does it?! Wicked bunch of hypocrites!!! To hell with all of you!
..... 'devine intervention on the part of Republicans'..... Yea.. I've been aware of this delusion for awhile now... My one word response? BULLSHIT!.....JD
I am so sick of hearing McCain described as a Heroic Former POW. Many former POWS and survivors of Viet Nam don't use their past experience to consider themselves heros and use their status to promote themselves.
The irony is thick, because Jesus does denounce G-d on the cross. Jesus specifically says Eloi, Eloi lam sabachtani, which is Aramaic for My G-d, My G-d WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME. Jesus utters from the cross a moment of doubt, which many devout Christians would consider denouncing G-d.
She's wrong. He did denounce the U.S.--on video! I think we can probably expect the clip to air at some point. Good ol' GOP: if the facts don't fit the message, make shit up!
