The Gavel:

From the Judiciary Committee:
Conyers Subpoenas Karl Rove

(Washington, DC)- Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) issued a subpoena to former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove for testimony about the politicization of the Department of Justice (DOJ), including former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman’s case. Yesterday, Rove’s attorney, Robert Luskin, sent a letter to the Committee expressing that Rove would not agree to testify voluntarily, per the Committee’s previous requests.

“It is unfortunate that Mr. Rove has failed to cooperate with our requests,” Conyers said. “Although he does not seem the least bit hesitant to discuss these very issues weekly on cable television and in the print news media, Mr. Rove and his attorney have apparently concluded that a public hearing room would not be appropriate. Unfortunately, I have no choice today but to compel his testimony on these very important matters.”

Separately, Chairman Conyers recently received a letter from DOJ’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) indicating that the office has opened an investigation into allegations of selective prosecution of Siegelman and others.

True, but maybe the most important thing is that it will cost him a ton of legal fees and maybe break him financially. Don't think that any legal defense fund raising will go on for him since he no longer has an official place in the administration.

In a word ... so? Isn't he the 3rd person from this administration to be subpoenaed and the Justice Dept. just ignores it? Okay, so I'm still pretty friggin' skeptical as to what ACTUALLY will happen. I still see it as a chance for these people to save their jobs right before election time, after doing nothing for so long. I mean, if he really will slam down his foot and have the bastard frog-marched in, more power to him! But then again, why wait so long for all of this to happen, while innocent people have been dying/living thru torture? If he had reason to subpoena Rove a while ago, why didn't he do so? He could have ignored the subpoena and we could have had him thrown in the basement months ago.

Then again, I'm not going to be bitchin' (too loudly) if it gets done, one way or the other... ;P

Paul's picture

Conyers better have Rove's pudgy ass stracked to a lie detector while he is being questioned. Better, conduct a parallel investigation by other means so that when Rove perjurs himself, he can be prosecuted..after Bush leaves office and goes into exile in Paraguay.

The one thing in the past eight years that Bush has gotten right was to bestow the name "Turdblossom" on Rove.

To paraphrase Clarence Darrow, I would never wish any man dead, but I would read that word on his tombstone with great pleasure.

yeh. :( But who knows, maybe it just took that long to go swimming through all the e-mails/archives/phone records to find the nut-clinching evidence against the whole administration, and it had to be Rove, or the whole investigation would lead nowhere..? Maybe they didn't give a flying f*ck about Miers et all, because it would spoil the surprise they have for Rove, Cheney, and Bush. And so be remanded to the state for custody?

Consequently, this is just another example of Coyners doing the political "posturing

i do not believe a presidential pardon is effective against civil charges, only criminal ones.

From Wiki

The pardon power of the President extends only to offenses cognizable under U.S. Federal law.

The Justice Department recommends anyone requesting a pardon must wait five years after conviction or release prior to receiving a pardon. A presidential pardon may be granted at any time, however, and as when Ford pardoned Nixon, the pardoned person need not yet have been convicted or even formally charged with a crime.

So I was wrong, Rove and others could be pardoned with out being charged. The question I will have if Chimpy does pardon some of his people for crimes they committed , what were the crimes?

I begining to think impeachment of Bush and Cheney should begin soon.

Let's see, Bush has already pardoned Libby so we would expect nothing less from him if others are convicted.... unless we establish our investigation now and hold all trials after Obama is in office. I do not think a person can be pardoned for something you have not been charged with. It's not like Chimpy was god able to forgive all sins.

i do not believe a presidential pardon is effective against civil charges, only criminal ones.

I begining to think impeachment of Bush and Cheney should begin soon.

very interesting, thanks for the info.

HAHAHAHAHAHA...that's Karl and me laughing at this latest subpoena from big, bad, tough House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers. Will he appear like he, Miers or Bolton did when they got one of John's "subpeona" last year. Huh? What d'ya thin? But it looks good ONCE AGIAN as Converyers heads home for his summer break but leaves the place a bussin' AGAIN with ANOTHER of his laughable pre-summer break antics to nowhere. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Stop it. You're killing me. Literally.

Don't let him run out the clock. Vote for inherent contempt and put this treasonous degenerate in cuffs.

Well, I'm sure the Attorney General will give the matter all due attention. Wake me when something actually happens.

Send that Joey Goebels wanna be [Deleted-Sitemonitor] to prison where he belongs. Then hold a trial on his ass among the others and find them guilty on massive counts of murder.

I am no lawyer but it seems that executive privilege in the Seigelmen case would implicate the President in a crime. If KKKarl discussed the criminal activities with the Chimp, the Chimp is involved in the criminal activities of KKKarl. If he doesn't the Chimp is off the hook, for now. They should drag his ass to the Congress and imprison him in the basement. Since torture is such a good device for us to use on captives, use waterboarding on the fat bastard.

Indict, convict, punish.

I've thought about this. Turdblossum is out of favor at the WH. My bet is that if they even think he is going to say anything, that they'll just make sure he is "accidented" or "heart attacked" or "stroked" or is "untimely demised" by some other unfortunate event.

I just want to see that pig sweat under the hot lights.

If he does ignore the subpeona then FNC needs to be innundated with demands that Rove be removed from it's line up.
A news network that promotes itself as a patriotic network that loves America wouldn't want to employ a person who is in contempt of congress, would they?.

'bout damn time.

This isn't news.

My money bets that: Rove ignores it, Dems bluster to act like they're doing something, nothing happens, they all take fat checks from GE and Exxon and meet up at some steak house in DC and denigrate the waitstaff as "the little people."

Rove
Bush
Cheney
Rumsfeld
Wolfowitz
Gonzales
Jean Schmit
Rush Limbaugh
Mike Savage (Weiner)

These are my picks for prosecution.

This s a good start but definitely not the end. It goes on and on and on and on, etc.

Would any of these people tell the truth? (under oath or under torture?)

Ans.: NO

About time! Although I am cautiously optimistic, I am glad that the Dems have finally put the subpeona at Karl Rove's door.

It's about time Congress goes Lord of the Flies on Little Karl for the world to see.

Conyers is a great American. What ever happened to the court filing against the others who cited executive privilege for not appearing? It seems there should be a more expeditious way...

Good news all the same. Giggidy.

Let it stall so by the time the trial is over Bush has already left office so he can't pardon that fat sonofabitch.

Dude...in this order: Rove, Cheney, Bush/Rumsfeld/Gonzalez/Powell/Rice.

Rush Limbaugh isn't an elected official, he can't be impeached.

Lone Rogue's picture

Rove will die before admitting everything, and it won't be natural causes. Someone he holds a lot of secrets about will make sure it looks like natural causes.

That is, if this gets far enough.

They have issued subpoenas before. They were ignored. NOTHING was done about it. What makes anyone think it will be different this time?

No one's ass is getting kicked.

It's theater.

LanceThruster's picture

I hope there's a strategy that drags it out long enough for Bush to be out of office before they drop the hammer on this POS (and a host of others). I don't think there's any mechanism for preemptive pardons (not that Shrub didn't ignore a rash of other legal restrictions).

A step in the right direction. Whether it's more than that or not remains to be seen. But it does represent a change from the past.

Is this a symbolic gesture, or do they actually think that Turd Blossom is going to show up? They're gonna have to haul him in. And if they do, do they expect him to tell the truth?

Why bother, he'll either ignore it or get a pardon if it leads anywhere. Yes, I'm bitter...

I fear you are absolutely right. This is all much ado about nothing. Worse yet, after indicted and possibly found guilty, sentenced and pardoned, he'll just write a book and make a buck off the whole affair.

Fiddle-dee-dee.

Big whup. Dem subpoenas are worth zilch without the spine to enforce them. If the GOP had this much dirt on the Dems the next five months would be a broken record of shreiking manipulation to win the election. Instead we have the wussy Hilary-Obama variety hour, where neither has capitalized on GOP incompetence/evil.

That's the definition of PATHETIC.

To prevent a pardon go after these Republican criminals after we increase our majorities in congress and put a Dem in the White House. Might be best just to wait at this point. Less than a year till Chimpy McPardon leaves office. Do it then.
