Are 'preliminary' talks underway?
By Steve Benen Thursday May 22, 2008 8:00pmCNN is reporting, based on word from Hillary Clinton’s “inner circle” is pushing for some kind of “compromise,” and that “preliminary … formal talks” have begun about a Clinton exit strategy. TPM’s David Kurtz posted this video from CNN this morning:
Clinton, Malveaux reported, is “aware” of the formal discussions that have begun between the two campaigns, though officials in both camps have denied that any such talks are underway. Malveaux added that the talks haven’t exactly been going smoothly, describing them as “difficult.”
I'm afraid the CNN report raises more questions than it answers.
It's not surprising, then, that CNN is backing away from it's original report.

Hillary, just get out now. The Kennedy reference threw me for a loop, although I will give you the benefit of a doubt, It was totally insane. I want this bull-sh** over.
Oh Hillary - you really stepped in it today... I'm sure you meant no malice but basically you just unleashed the hounds on yourself...
[Deleted. Off topic-Sitemonitor]
Was it Clinton's "just shut the hell up" moment?
I'm not sure why this is on C+L. There is no there there. They might be talking but then they may not be talking but if they were talking it may be difficult but they may not be even talking. Where's the beef?
.
Does this mean the Corporate Media Campaign is coming to a close?
Will Corporate Media be picking their candidates?
.
CNN = Faux Noise
There is no information here... CNN has jumped the shark.
Who cares?
I'm tired of this election campaign - and I'm not even a US citizen!
Sorry to tell you, but Hillary just shot herself in the foot. Go back to the Senate and let Obama run his own campaign.
[Deleted. Off topic-Sitemonitor]
Barack, please don't put her on the ticket. I once liked her and supported her over you. But she's revealed her true power-mongering self. If you want your presidency to be your own, and you don't want to have to watch your back the whole time, pick someone else. You owe her nothing. Think she'd be thinking of you if the situation was reversed? Hahahaha. Plus you don't need losers like Terry McAuliffe weighing you down.
wich corporation hack will cave in first ? obama? or clinton?
[Deleted. Off topic-Sitemonitor]
yes, let's hurry up and throw our support to someone with less than three years of experience as a senator.
He'll know how to unite left with the right to get things accomplished.
Just as he's been able to unite his supporters with Clinton's supporters.
What the right did with Bush in 2000, promoting this new type of "compassionate conservative", the left
is doing with the new robotic "messiah".
Yeah, let's throw the worst economy the country has seen in decades to a newbie like Obama.
God help us.
Maybe her exit strategy is to say something really stupid and then use that as the excuse to drop out. That is, after all, what she did today.
I have a practical comprise suggestion. Let Hillary and her hillbilly hubby join the republican party. They might as well serve their corporate
interests without the pretense of being populists.

It's ridiculous I've never witnessed such carnival-bread and circus in my entire life.
If something happened to Barrack it's not going to be the Clinton's that did it. But the msm sure is trying to spin it that way.
Regardless she should have known better then to say something like that knowing Obama supporters at this point hate and despise not only her but anyone who says let her compete.
[Deleted. Off topic-Sitemonitor]
[Deleted. Off topic-Sitemonitor]
And as for the preliminary talks? It's time to shun her and the rest of the DLC. Put them out to pasture. We need to clean house in the Democratic Party. Dems of Hillary's ilk cannot be tolerated anymore.
Yeah, we haven't done something like that since the last Illinois senator who had 8 years in its senate (and no US Senate experience) since 1860 when the people of this country elected some guy named Lincoln.
FBush @ 18
That's kinda what I DO like about him. He's a newbie.
Not an old-bie. Not someone bought and paid for by entrenched lobbyists and special interest groups. Not someone who has been part of the insular Beltway culture. Not someone who's riding daddy's or hubby's coattails or bank account.
Yes, let's DEFINITELY throw the worst economy this country has seen in... oh, decades is being kind... to a newbie like Obama. Let's hear some enthusiastic ideas even if they ARE naive and overly ambitious and irritate the shit out of the corporate Jabbas who've been holding the country on a short chain leash.
Frankly, it would make for a refreshing change. Maybe the newbie won't make it happen, not overnight, not without a fight. But we SURE as hell haven't been making it with the 'experienced' old-bies. So your argument doesn't offend me.
Not. At. All.

LA, Your right. Even Obama's campaign is giving her some slack. But Damn, she really stepped in it this time.

Right. Here's the compromise: Obama won, you lost. Get out and stop acting like you have some sort of control over the situation.
LunaStick @ 26
Excellent point. Well said.
nonny mouse @ 27:
Let's bring back the economy brought to us by the last "newbie"—Jimmy Carter.
Since there is an over-zealous site monitor on duty tonight--
We're all on the same side. But the reality is that Clinton knows how to WIN THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE!
Obama is a deer in the woods. His grand speeches mean NOTHING to those of us who are fed up with the
Bush economy.
nonny mouse, well said on your part too.
The so called experience card has been way over played. Experience is what has gotten us where we are today. In the toilet! I need no more of the so called experience. It's time to flush away the old and bring in the new.
Hillary just threw her chance at the Vice Presidency away today with her assassination BS. She needs to find a rock and nestle comfortably beneath it.
FBush @ 33
Let’s bring back the economy brought to us by the last “newbie”—Jimmy Carter
Um, the last newbie was Bill Clinton if we are going to try to evaluate whose experiences makes one ready for being president. Bill as governor of Arkansas did not give him more experience than if he had been governor of Georgia like Carter.
Certainly Not a News channel @ 3:
Actually, my name is really David Duke. It was allegedly a naive mistake by my parents. Yeah well.
There is an argument for Hillary, at least one, but there are regional arguments as well. I honestly have no opinion.
But I think it's pretty normal for trial balloons to be flying at this point.
To all those who continue to thrash the clintons rather than directing that anger at McCain—
Remember that nearly as many voters went for Hillary.
You're killing your own chances with the hate and vitriol.
Don't understand it and never will. Obama supporters are as oppressive as the Christian Right.
LunaStick @ 36:
GREAT EXAMPLE!!
Hillary couldn't POSSIBLY do as good of a job as her husband, right???
That's funny!!!
It was ok to elect her husband who gave us a record jobs growth and more home ownership than ever before but let's THRASH THE WIFE!
Word.
She just threw away her chance at Majority Leader too.
After suggesting that Obama could be assinated, it doesn't matter what Hillary wants, she ain't getting it. Read some of the other blogs: myDd, dailyKos, Huffpo, all of them are barfing on their keyboards.
Hillary has finally made herself unfit. Her zombie-like appology to the Kennedy's instead of Obama has proven that she lacks any connection to reality. She is a (failed) politician, not a leader.
If Obama picks her as his running-mate, I won't be buying the "dream ticket", I'll be buying a plane ticket to a country with healthcare, and a track record of staying out of nation building.
Jeez FBush, comparing Obama supporters as Oppressive as the Christian Right is kind of insulting. But hey, at least some Democrats have some balls!
FBush @ 39:
I hate to say but thats beginning to dawn on me too. I can only hope his supporters all aren't like the ones you see posting on the Internet.
The assassination Freudian slip pretty much finished her and any chance for a VP nod (not that that was very damn likely). Just throw in the towel already. There's no graceful way out now.
Hillary is like the boxer who tries one too many fights. She ruined her chances and she didn't help her legacy or her husband's legacy. It is over and someone should tell her.
Don't tell me. Clinton will threaten Obama that she will keep swiftboating him unless and until he asks her to be his VP. That's her style of negotiating, so it wouldn't surprise me one bit.
FBush @ 39
Don't have a mirror to look into? You should find one because you are doing exactly what you are accusing others of. There are PLENTY of Clinton supporters doing it as well. If you can't see the thrashing and trashing has been a two way street, well then you aren't paying attention. Try going over to Taylor Marsh's blog for an example and remember that half the democratic voters also have voted for Obama.
I'd be more than happy to direct my vitriolic wit towards McCain. Unfortunately we still have to deal with Clinton and her shameless behavior of recent weeks before we can mount the campaign against McCain.
She is preparing a run as the head of the Amerika for Clinton Party, with Joe Lieberman as VP.
she need an "graceful exit". LOL the moderator should mail her these posts to give her an idea.
Get used to it obamazoids. This is going to the convention and don't be TO upset if the precious is called on to support and campaign for the nominee come General Election time. Here's a hint, unless Clinton offers him a VP shot he won't be campaigning for himself. I wonder id the Ms. Obama will for the second time in her adult life be proud of her country then?
FBush @ 40
What's so hard to understand? A "newbie" like Bill Clinton did a pretty good job as president. Your the one saying we're all in need of God's help if we elect another "newbie".
One more thing, Hillary is NOT Bill!!
LunaStick @ 48:
As a HuffPo reader from the its beginning, I have learned a valuable lesson on how Dems turn on their own.
Clinton never had a chance.

Okay okay the greatest man in the history of the United States of America bar none, Barack Obama, is hustling to take over from the worst President in the history of the United States of America, George W. Bush.

hillarys like popeye! shes im it to the finnish cause she eats her spinach/toot toot!
FBush @ 53
I will agree that Democrats are more prone to turn on their own. Republicans tow their party line no matter what but we, Clinton and Obama supporters alike, have brains and think for ourselves. If we don't like one of our own, we don't hold back. It's a downside of being free thinkers but it's far better than being a republican lock-stepper.

LunaStick @ 58:
I'm not so sure about that. McCain has been averaging about 70% of the primary vote since he "locked up" the nomination.
Speaking of it has Keith bashed Obama yet for anything?
LunaStick @ 58:
Yes, the comment was not good.
But take a look at the blow-outs Obama has suffered in the rust belt states.
Go ahead and ignore those numbers but Obama, as indicative of his naivete, has not demonstrated an
ability to win the purplish states. Scream all the vitriol you want at Clinton but that is a serious danger sign with respect to the electoral college.

After her dumbass comment (for the 5th or 6th time this year) about Bobby Kennedy being killed before the nomination is really over, I hope she gets out and stays FAR, FAR AWAY from the public eye for the remainder of my life.
What a moron. Let it go lady. You had all - AND I MEAN ALL - of the frontrunner advantages and experience to wrap up this nomination before it ever began, but you and your staff BLEW IT. Big time.
Now get outta the damn way.
Additionally, I heard Hillary's comment. She was waxing historical about how late the elecion of 1968 was going.
But the election of 1968 also started later than this year.
And that's the historical part, now how late it's running, but how early it started.
And no matter who wins the National Elections they can say it's historical, Barack Obama for not being white, Hillary for not being male, and even John McCain for his age.
FBush @ 64:
But hey they say, none of that matters He's WON!!!!
I think Hillary Clinton is a very strong and capable opponent. She could easily be president, however, I have been an Obama supporter from day 1. I think it's been wonderful to have both a woman and a "dark skinned" or "minority" candidate in this Democratic selection process. The old days may be disappearing; the days of "Christian"-white-men-only. While I want Obama to win, I think Hillary has added a new facet to American politics. Women are just as capable as men!!!! And people will support it.

And shit, I think he's actually spitting on the video monitor in front of him.
FBush @ 64,
Which purple states are you referring to?
OH, he loses where Clinton wins
FL, the same as Ohio
HOWEVER!
The last numbers in Michigan showed Obama winning and Clinton losing. Same in Wisconsin, Colorado and Iowa. In Virginia and NC, he is in play. Depending on which polls you look at he is either in the lead or barely behind. He won both those states too. If you think of the old electoral maps of 2000 or 2004, then nothing changes, Clinton will probably win just as Obama will probably win. It just that the maps will change.
People have to remember the Clintons and the Kennedys are friends. Long before they were vacationing with the booshes (Jeb called Bill and older brother), the Clintons were vacationing with the Kennedy's having their picture taken with them on their yacht etc.
Of course the republicans jumped all over it, calling the Clintons elitish and hanging around celebrites, although they were silent when ray gun did the same.

Our fellow dems are so drained by the hate they've aimed at Hillary.

Zzz.
So, here's my thoughts on this matter. First of all, Webb as VP.. no one else comes close. He's a war hero, (taking at least some of that away from McCain) and judging by the amazing passage of the 21st Century GI Bill.. he knows how to push legislation through. He also knows how to fight, and certainly embarrassed the hell out McCain with the same bill. Totally Awesome.
Now, as far as Hillary is concerned. I've been thinking about it really long and hard..and I think she should get the job as the switchboard operator during the graveyard shift. I mean, after all, when it's 3 a.m., who do you want answering the phone?

This is such a preposterous Clinton manufactured lie. Clinton is ONLY ahead in the popular vote if you count florida and michigan. and as you well know, Obama wasn't even on the ticket in Michigan. Plus, Obama did not campaign in florida, while HIllary had several quite large "fundraisers" there. but of course you knew that anyway. And that is primarily my problem with clinton supporters... I see just how brazenly manipulative they are with their "facts."

You'll deal with the electoral college.

Craven Morehead @ 109:
One of the theories on that is that Michigan was stripped in order to hamstring John Edwards' campaign because he was doing really well with the bitter . . . oh hell. Anyway, yes Mr. Ickes (whose name is perfect for a slimy political operative) was indeed into it up to his neck when it was politically expedient to strip Michigan of its delegation. Hillary is also on record saying that Michigan (and by extension, one assumes, Florida) doesn't count. Listen to her say it. This was before Super Tuesday.
This primary has been an absurd game of Calvinball, with Hillary changing goalposts constantly, John McCain ignoring the law he helped author on campaign finance. Someone without the built-in cool of Obama would have lost it a long time ago (I know I did and I get nuts even thinking about the shenanigans of both Hillary and McCain). Fortunately, he's got the task out front, and all I have to do is get his back and keep donating, calling, and talking.
Democracy is great when you're winning. Voters are smart and well-informed -- when you're winning. They're an ignorant mob when you're losing, I've learned. And Democracy is an unfair process with wayyyyy too many restrictions -- when you're losing.

Like I’m going to go searching through the archives for your comments. I’ve run into you before and you were just as insulting to me as I’ve been to you or anyone else. That’s the point I was making. You are as much a part of the problem as anyone on either side.
Now correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it you who vowed to vote for McCain over Obama? I’ll wait for your answer before saying anything more.
You have me confused with someone else, then. I have never stated anywhere I would vote for Sen McCain.
Edwards was my first choice, then Hillary.

... and pigs could fly too. Yet I am not willing to bet on porcine airline futures.
Just because you can, doesn't necessarily meant that you should. And saying stupid shit like bringing RFK's assassination to the fray is not helping.
LA Confidential @ 131
You are right there. There could be an upset. Earth could also be hit by a giant asteroid before the election making this all moot. The odds are about the same. :)
Barbara @ 133:
Well Bobby Kennedy said, "Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly."
So why should she quit? Can you explain this logic to me?
I mean there's people out there saying Barrack should quit, and drop out on the con side. How come your not going after that instead of being duped by the clinton hating msm?

I am not going after anyone, just pointing out your folly. Persecutory complexes are yet another tell tale of the unhinging. Which I guess came right after the total denial of reality...
at this point I honestly think FBush is a GOP operative.
