Obama resigns from Trinity Church
By John Amato Friday May 30, 2008 9:00pmBarack Obama resigned Saturday from his Chicago church — where controversial sermons by his former pastor and other ministers had created repeated political headaches for the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination — his campaign confirmed...
Obama has said he was not present for the controversial sermons by Wright or Pfleger and had condemned both — most recently saying he was "deeply disappointed" by Pfleger's "divisive, backward-looking rhetoric."...read on

There shall be no religious test for any public office. Period.

We don't need a church goer!! We need a President who understands the Constitution. Obama fits that Bill!
With Barak Obama's departure from the church, we can prayerfully say: ENOUGH ALREADY, and get back to a discussion of, and finding solutions for, REAL issues that concern and affect REAL people.
How convenient, Barry O.
It's sad that Rev. Wright and the Church in general changed so much over the years.
It's even sadder that the outrageous lie that Obama is a Muslim forced him to tie himself so close to his pastor just to prove he was a Christian.
A person shouldn't be held accountable for every single thing that their minister says.
That's actually sad. For his family and himself that his church couldn't get it together and support him in a way that didn't require him to resign in order to avoid negative press coverage.
One doesn't resign from church. One simple leaves.
enough @ 1:
That's a pretty good statement.
But Grampa McSame and Shillery supporters will turn this into a reason for Obama not being fit for president.
sad isnt it , another religious dweeb bites the bullet!
I don't give a rat's ass about any candidates church/pastor. We are seeing the cultism of all religion. The next attack on Barack is just around the corner, maybe because he doesn't have a pastor? I care that he had the rules committee.
While Obama says a tearful goodbye, and the church seems understanding in its response, people including me will think of this move as especially craven. His appeasement of the FOX news fascists and deranged Clinton Campaign, is troubling as it shows he will fold and turn on his own when forced into a corner.
Le Roi Est Mort @ 8:
You resign when you have to publicly sever all ties. If he didn't resign, but never went back people could still say that it is "Barack Obama's church home"
The prophet blinks.
Coward.
So either Obama was sleeping through church for the last 20 years or he just grew a conscience in the last few weeks. This may hurt him more in the long run.
He must have been touched by the noodlie appendage of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
President Obama.......Pastafarian.....how cool is that!
What a backbone.
Will he be going duck hunting soon?
I would have respected him more if he toughed it out and stuck with Trinity, a model of what a Christian community should be (and I am writing as an atheist). The question is, does he also repudiate the church's liberation message for a more moderate, platitudes type church experience.
I am saddened for him and his family that he had to make such a choice. When your church disappoints you, it is like a divorce. It is necessary to make the break, but is still painful. Leaving one's church however, often strengthens one's faith because it requires introspection.
deezus @ 13:
Actually, if you are a "member" you do formally resign.

That's funny.
What a dope. Unless he's through with Christianity altogether.
You know, maybe he could taint Hagee and Parsley by joining their little cults...
This is the most important point that Monroe Anderson brings up:

There's a new little song over at MyDD...goes a little like this:
Sung brightly-
The bus rolls along, oh the bus rolls along, oh the bus rolls along
The bus rolls along, oh the bus rolls along, oh the bus rolls along
The bus rolls along, oh the bus rolls along, oh the bus rolls along
Until somethin' goes wrong, somethin' goes wrong
Until somethin' goes wrong, somethin' goes wrong
Until somethin' goes wrong, somethin' goes wrong
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand then, and then, and then!
It's Under the Bus you Go! It's Under the Bus you Go!
It's Under the Bus you Go! Ho, ho, ho, ho...
Under the Bus you go!
Repeat as needed. I'm paraphrasing but you get the idea. It was kinda cute.
How does one resign from a church?
Did he fill out a membership card at some point? Did he tear it up?
One more step on the road to Obama's complete rejection of strong voices that question this country's foreign and domestic policies.
Total bullshit. Obama should had never been held responsible for the words of other men. If everyone had only paid the same amount of attention to Dubya the last eight years this nation wouldn't be a turd in the toilet waiting to be flushed. The fake outrage over these two pastors is so sad and pathetic. Maybe this is a preview of how the media will finally awaken and do their jobs when "the black guy" takes office.
A.Citizen @ 35:
I guess he should've stayed with the church after they appear to be on a mission to embarrass and undermine him.
That takes real backbone.
Obama caving into the right, not a good sign. Meanwhile HRC fights on. You can be sure this will make any fence sitting 'Obama is a secret Muslim' people to be secure in the notion that he actually is.
as barack says when the going gets tough the tough get going!
deezus @ 38:
No real backbone would have been what JFK did when the issue of his being a Catholic came up when running against the Nixon. But since Barry knows about as much history as my cat, read his damn books if you doubt me, he didn't know what would have been the prudent, the winning, the progressive thing to do. Dude is a bumbler as his many episodes tripping over reality shows.

Keep bashing Barack. It's fun to watch you ppl squirm. He will be president, he will be a great president, and he will make this country feel good about itself again.
ceti @ 17:
I am disappointed in Obama for caving on this, but the fact is mainstream Christianity in this country doesn't like any church that dares to speak out. The mainstream evangelical movement does not care for those who dare to think for themselves regardless if it is on religious practice or politics. It saddens me to think this is a move by Obama to cater to that crowd.
i'm glad he did it.
to quote a friend -
"when you cut off a dog's tail - you don't cut it off one inch at a time."
Disappointing, but, unfortunately, Obama doesn't need his church (for most people, a place of support) to be a distraction from his other battles--winning the nomination and Presidency.
At least he's smart enough to not fight on three fronts.
He sticks with that church and he catches hell. He leaves it and catches hell. Anyone else see a pattern?
So why is this a fair post, but the HRC Kennedy/June comments weren't?
Furthermore, to use Obama resigning from a church, and separating himself from a pastor who appears to have used him for his own gains, is not a litmus test for presidential leadership.
The problem with religion is all the same.
Why have a group stand for your ideas when you can simply stand for your own.
Religions - Political Parties - (fill in the blank)
Be responsible for your own ideas people. I think Obama should resist finding a new Church in this campaign.
Well, I probably should have proof read that. Oh, well. Need more beer
Being a member of this congregation served the Senator well in his early career but it may now become an encumbrance. It is nearly impossible for anyone to become a serious presidential candidate without , in some measure, pandering to religion. I don't believe for a fraction of a second that someone of Obama's intelligence seriously needed moral guidance from any pastor. There are some troubling concerns I have about this. Monroe Anderson's analysis is not without merit. There has been a disturbing trend among Democrats to retreat when challenged. This is
the wrong tack to take. Bill Clinton was a much weaker candidate considered objectively yet he prevailed by answering every attack with a counter attack. Obama has shown himself capable of pursuing this course. I don't know why he has departed from it now unless there are further revelations about his ex-congregation that he thinks necessary to distance himself from.
Does this mean Fox will finally stop the 24hr nonstop Reverend stories?
Some Americans are stupid to have a Reverend test for President. If we don't like your rev, you can't be president.
brians @ 55:
When disliking someone(whatever the reason may be) no matter what they do, they'll be attacked. This is just the residue of bitter Hillary disciples and closet Repubs who simply fear a black President. Gotta go. Good night.
Maybe Senator Obama and family will be new congregants in a church in Washington, DC before too long. :)
Peter G @ 59:
He tried sticking with them, didn't he? Didn't he give a national speech where he said he couldn't disown his pastor, and then his pastor went on talk shows and speaking engagements and called him just another politician? Then, a priest from a Catholic church, not even HIS church (Pfleger is from St. Sabina here in Chicago) gets in the pulpit and gives him more bad press. I would disengage from them, too, for the simple fact that they can't keep their mouths shut and just keep doing him damage.
Fanon @ 63:
it the job of a good christian to forgive and put your faith in devine providence , pick yourself up and dust yourself off and get the hell out of dodge!
If there wasn't a Faux propaganda network he wouldn't have to turn his back against his church. If anyone doesn't realize how f*cked up the propaganda channel is they have to be missing a few links to make a chain. Faux is far worse than the 527s because they have a nation wide audience of dunces.
First of all, this whole "faith" issue is just disgusting. Founders of this country were running from religious repression, only to have the same thing start-up here. He should have left the church a long time ago. One can't seek equality, while listening to hate speech. This stuff didn't just start happening, and he was there for some of it. I've heard some of that crap in the community, and yes, I am black.
Tom @ 51:
you're one of the few who thinks along with the candidate. all this kneejerk idiocy just clouds the fact that Barack has given that church 20 years of his life and three chances to cause his candidacy some harm. After removing Hillary from the campaign as gently as possible, he can go about the business of destroying McCain. The church is no longer an issue.
Then I'll invite him to join my church.
Fanon @ 63:
I don't disagree with anything you said. But the same can be said of any religious leader. There is always a price to be paid for their support. The best spiritual guide any politician can have is a dead one. At least those types keep their mouths shut.
deezus @ 25:
I didn't say or imply there was anything wrong with Christianity. I think he's a dope for leaving his church because a bunch of shits (all pretending to be Christian, as well) piled on. Unless he's decided he's through with the faith all together.
It is unfortunate that one would have to sever ties with their church because of others' egos. Just because one person says or does bad things does not mean everyone associated with them or with an organization they belong to is bad.
Peter G @ 68:

Or for the last 20 years he respected that others have a right to voice their own opinions, without having to make them his own. But in a politically charged election few people think past negative sound bites to consider Obama has his own good judgement.

There were no altruistic motives in the founding of this country. It was about money. They wanted an end to british rule and taxation, not an end to slavery, white-male supremacy, european hegemony, et al. They put all the altruistic crap in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States because that's the way you do it with class - calligraphy and poetic polysyllables. They meant for no other change than from foreign to local sovereignty.
E @ 70:
You can't tell that to fux.
I resigned from my church a long time ago.
I thought it was a good idea. Now my Sunday mornings are free to spend at the gym when hardly anyone else is there.
He said he resigned from the church because his campaign was becoming a problem for the church and the members. FOX News and their coharts were calling members and harrassing them and of course taping everything and everyone there.
We have not seen smear yet. Fox tapes this stuff and then puts it on a 24 hour loop and after about 2 days ,CNN and MSNBC and all the rest pick it up. I am convinced that most of this nasty politics is pushed by FOX. Everything started going downhill once they came on the scene.
E @ 70:
Well, he didn't have to. He chose to.
On the other hand seems to me that the congregation were grooving to the message.
When you belong to a church for20 years you usually make freinds, form deep relationships.
Just saying that given Michelle's real anger issues and the enjoyment of the hate I find it difficult to believe that this isn't a rather common occurrence at Trinity.
Who allows their kids to be subjected to that unless its something they subscribe to. What kind of unity are we in for?

"Wright out or wimp out? Obama quits Trinity"
Seems there could have been a better link to clarify the Obama position on race and politics.
Personally, I think Obama clarified this decision best with:
It "just reinforced that view that we don't want to have to answer for everything that's stated in a church."
Isn't that fair enough? To have defend oneself is one thing, but to have to constantly deflect the varying views (legitimate or not) of an entire church is a whole other.
This has been the ammo the Clintons and the Right have been using against Obama for quite some time. I don't see this decision to remove himself from the church as a great cave-in to the right that Moore Anderson believes it to be. Just a distance from organic views that really shouldn't reflect on Obama.
The "high road" on this could have been to remain and defend, but seriously - wouldn't the Right use this as a constant wedge and avoid the REAL ISSUES facing our country?
Democrats need live by a (much) higher standard in the light of today's right wing media.

that's exactly the problem. if you're black, you can't be american, according to some people.
Obama is demonstrating a troubling weakness that manifests in his repeated folding to the right. That doesn't mean the Clinton Campaign is sane or ethical by any means. It just means he thinks he needs to whitewash himself and dilute his message to mere platitudes about America's greatness to appeal to certain swing voters.
Moyers said that he has never seen anything like this media frenzy around a parishioner and his pastor, and it is sad but also telling about the jingoistic moral rot in the media.

Sen. Barack Obama said he was resigning from the church "with some sadness."

Stuff like this is why I'm inclined to always side with Bill Maher and his anti-religious views even though I find him a little extreme at times. The idea that Obama now faces guilt by association by anything that happens with this church for the rest of his life is insane at best just because he sat in the pews probably 20 times in 20 years.
Jason Tallismon @ 97:
I'm assuming that you're paying taxes to a government and pledging to its flag for probably your entire life. Even the most diehard Obama supporters would have to agree that this will look like plain CHEAP political expediency to other people.
In politics, you have to stand your ground, otherwise your opponent will interpret it as WEAKNESS and use it as opportunity to walk all over you.

ferrofluid (Obama 08) @ 87:
In this age if a minister is stating as fact that he knows the race of Jesus he's got a racial agenda on his mind.
And it's not a good one.
If you saw Obama's speech, he made it pretty clear that the other members of the church were being constantly scrutinized and harrassed by the media, and as he put it, judged by the same level of scrutiny as if they were Presidential candidates (not the exact words). Also, reporters got some flyers from the church that listed the phone numbers of elderly shut-ins the church served, and called them to harrass them about what they thought of Obama.
He seemed sad, and mentioned that if he did it to be politically expedient, he would have done it long ago. Also, he was careful to say he still cared about his former fellow church members, and would still pray for them, also that he wasn't condemning the church as such. NOT politically expedient, at all.
What's more, he didn't put them down in any way, just made it sound like the members of the church have really been taking a beating for his sake, which they probably have. I'm sure Fox News would have accepted nothing short of Obama calling them all a bunch of crazed monsters over there, just slavering to overthrow the U.S. government. His comments in their entirety were not what the media wants him to say at all. He was respectful and considerate of the other churchgoers. He also talked a lot about his personal religious philosophy (the "Golden Rule," mostly). Too bad he is essentially being forced to discuss his religious beliefs, when it's obvious he doesn't want to talk about it. The reporters kept asking him what church he would go to next, and how he would pick it.
Nobody thinks of what it must be like to live in Chicage, and constantly hear yourself referred to as some kind of terrorist nutcake, because you go to church with the Obamas. I'm sure most of the people that go there are very nice people and don't deserve it.
Dot @ 124:
the fact remains that trinity does great works within the community...
i still think that vid of the priest is hilarious
but no matter what obama has done in regards to his affiliation with the church, guys like hannuity and rush aint gonna leave this alone
the reason being, they have nothing else to pin on obama, except to try to instill the fear of a black radical sitting in the white house, signing presidential declarations regarding reparations and making it illegal to be white
its sad that we have to deal with this in the 21st century
While some Obama supporters would like to believe that Barack would stick to his guns and stay the course regarding his church, and some Hillary supporters would like to believe that Barack would come out and fully support everything that anyone associated with his parish had said, Obama is showing a very practical sense of governance here. No one wants to have to defend the most radical of their supporters. They want to defend what they themselves believe, not what some of their supporters believe. Barack is saying: "This is what I believe, not what others who may claim to speak for me believe." It is the sign of a leader - not a panderer. I still occasionally attend Catholic services, because of what I believe, not because of what the Church has done in the past.

Clinton's people shout 'McCain, McCain, McCain!!" and Obama quits his church. Does anybody see an Obama analogy to Israel here? I do: Jihad till the ones who worked the soil are in the sea. Something is really wrong with that and with the Clintonistas who seem to believe it. I hear it everywhere except in this campaign; "you can't negotiate with terrorists."
How and when did Obama (or Israel, since I'm making them 'blood brothers')create the issues or not abide by the rules to force such abject defensiveness?
To the "Victim" go the spoils?
as i see it, barack was ill served by his pastors. they *knew* they were under increased media scrutiny yet they persisted with the controversial sermons they knew were going to cause him grief.they forced him out of that church. sad really.
Obama should go live and tell the world that because of Fox News' constant attacks of Wright, he has seen the light and become an atheist.
Too late. The problem isn't the location that Obama's longtime personal and professional relationships choose to unleash their anti-white, racist rants. It really doesn't matter if they do it from the altar at Trinity United Church of Christ or from a soapbox on the corner of Hollywood and Vine, the media and GOP will still present the well-produced videos of them to the American people between now and November 4th (if Obama is the Democratic nominee).
The problem is they are apparently the ONLY kinds of people Barack Obama has had a close professional and personal relationship with for the last 20 years. The Kennedys and others endorsed him after knowing him for about 6 months. But virtually everyone else who has truly known Barack Obama and vice versa for the last 20 years has proven to be general election victory-killers. Bigtime.
In fact, virtually everything notable about Barack Obama that has come to light over the past 6 months to a year has not been something anyone would promote to win a general election; Michelle urging "black America" to "WAKE UP! and get it!" on national television last November in order to swing more black support for her husband, her "first time I've been proud of my country" comment, his "typical white person" comment, his "bitter people" clinging to their religion, guns and bigotry comment, Jeremiah Wright I, Jeremiah Wright II, Father Pfleger, etc., etc., etc.
Even his one supposedly shining moment, the 37 minute 1960s-style speech on 1960s-style Race problems has now been utterly trashed and rendered ridiculous by this latest desperate political move of his to disown Trinity United Church of Christ.
Geez, folks. When is this guy going to trot out a longterm relationship, a meaningful speech, a turning point, a policy statement or ANYTHING that people would be proud to display as a general election-winning characteristic instead of a total general election deal-killer? If he's got any of those cards in him or anywhere else in his life, now would be a really good time for him to start playing them, don'tcha' think?
What a farce.
Any shred of respect I had for this clown is now gone.
Any controversy, any challenge from the GOP and he takes the bait and runs.
Today, June 1st, 2008, the Democratic Party, my party for my entire life, just elected John McCain.
Thanks for blowing it yet again.
When he starts to cave on everything they throw at him, remember this date when the DNC chose the wrong candidate to beat the GOP.
You wish he was Bobby Kennedy. So do I. Boy do I wish that.
But he's not. Not by a long shot.
President John McCain.
4 more years indeed.
Fun.

Other than Wright's comments on the origin of AIDS, please tell me one thing he has said that isn't the truth, or mostly true. What, you don't like his tone? His "uppitiness"? Is he too black? Is he too right?
Obamatologists can rationalize away all of this, but the truth is that Obama believes to his core with the Rev, he just knows he cannot get elected admitting it. Is that the quality you'd like in a president? A sham? After all the talk about "change"???
We should've been totally honest and nominated Dennis Kucinich. At least we could sleep at night knowing it was the right man. Sure he'd have no chance of being elected, but guess what, neither does Obama.
After 8 grueling, painful, disgusting years, we're settling for someone ill prepared to be president, but moreover CANNOT be elected. Period.
What a damn shame.
Reverend WHITE is more like it. Talk about a 99% vanilla dude spouting some serious "African-American" self-loathing. Who cares about ignorant religious people and their ridiculous, ignorant motivations: Clinton needs to learn some basic math and McSame McCain needs to retire or enlist for duty in Iraq. On that note, I think all Re-pugs should enlist so they can reap what they sow...
Jim @ 133:
Dude relax, even an inanimate object like a carrot will win against the GOP...
The sky is not falling, and McCain is toast, the GOP knows it. They need some dupe to take the fall, since they are toxic and they need the Dems to clean up the mess they have left.
The dumb geezer is going to take the fall twice it seems; the GOP is letting him run out of pity and to make it up for the shit he took in the 2000 primaries from Bush's team who was the heir apparent to the throne.
the only reason why the GOP is nominating him is because they need to make it look like they are making it up to him.
when god gives you lemons you find a new god!!!

So that's why things seem so sour....
Zenrage @ 131:
Or, even better - a secular humanist. Then he could still be just as religious as he wants to be without all of the ring-kissing and other sanctified trappings which go along with most organized religions.
No tithing required either. It's a good religion to have, if one needs to have one ;-)
I feel bad that he had to do it, but I think it's for the best. His church was receiving vicious letters and death threats, and idiots who have no sense of nuance don't understand a lot of what the church has to say.
I'd also like to say I don't understand why none of Hillary's faux pas (hard-working whites, RFK, etc) never seem to make the front page here. Equal time here, please - but I guess it won't matter soon.
There are 17,000 members supposedly in this church. Do you think they will continue to support Obama after he throws them under the bus?
This was only a guest speaker. The Rev. Wright had retired. Obama is deserting the entire congregation but I am sure they have served their purpose in getting him on the road to election. He doesn't need them anymore.
That seems to be his mode of operating. He sure makes all his co-worshipers look like a stupid bunch of folks.
Does anyone here see the irony of the last straw being a white Catholic guest priest (in this supposedly black racist church), saying uncool things about his opponent! (HRC)
and yes, for the sake and safety of his church, as well as himself, he must leave because so many Obama haters won't leave it alone.
He's Heard The Words Of His Supporters And He Is Not Happy With Those Words
Lets face it, some of Barack Obama supporters can be very aggressive, grandiose, and self righteous. They drown out anybody who does not agree with them, and at times given the opposite impression of what Obama is about. That is an inherent problem in being inclusive. You pick up people who send the wrong message and assume it is their job to speak for him.
As we face the issue of unity, you will find these ill will hateful spokespeople leading the cry to that which refers to Hillary Clinton as a bitch, a racist, and anything else they can come up with. This kind of supporter does nothing to support unity. In fact, they do everything that end up being the very reason we have not united.
The Clinton supporters, who refer to Obama as a Muslim, as if it really mattered, play on the racist assumption all Muslims are terrorist. They take a leading position, as described above, with a wink and a nod that speaks to a silent form of racism that exist on both sides of the political spectrum.
What Obama is doing is pushing these hate mongers to the side because they don't speak for him. Even though they support him, they are not supporting what he truly stands for. In general, when you hear or read comments that refer to people as bitches, sluts, and doing every un-proven thing to win, you can bet they are not speaking for Obama. They are speaking to their own hateful experiences in life.

Left&Left @ 62:
Oh for pete's sake. I supported Hillary and I don't "fear" a black president. That's just your ignorance talking. Shut up already.
CoIntelPro for Democratic Party Victory @ 103:
Duh. Oh, and "stoopid" is spelled "stupid".
Shit! I can already see it...so clearly it makes me just wanna puke! McCain is a shoo-in! There's no doubt in my mind! I now know I'll never step foot on US soil again. I'll never vote for that ass-shat McCain----but I also know I won't be voting for either Obama or Clinton. Guess that means I won't be voting at all...........fuck!
SpankyTheMonkey @ 147:
Let's make it interesting. For a long time this country has needed more than two choices. I'm voting for Ralph Nader. And I am willing to bet a lot of the goofy repubs will vote for Bob Barr. Maybe we finally will see some "change".
Wow! I got up this morning and read all the comments and had to check and see if I had stumbled on to some right wing sight by mistake. The man left his church, big deal. It seems to me that this much to do about nothing, if you have a thorn in your hand you remove it. His church has become that thorn in his hand so he removed it, good for him. Now maybe we could talk about some stupid shit like, the war, the economy, gas prices, tax cuts for the rich, supreme court or, we can continue to talk about this great issue of the ages, Obama quit his church...
MarcyJ @ 148:
Ralph Nader, Bob Barr? Wow, that will really make alot of changes. Hahahahhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa....
