Joe Biden for Secretary of State?
Newsweek's Michael Hirsch is hearing rumblings:
was going to be John Kerry's secretary of State. "That was what we were led to believe" before Kerry lost to in '04, says an aide to the Delaware senator, who is chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. Now Biden, who has been to in the Senate what Ted Kennedy has been to domestic policy (almost anyway!), is emerging as a major consigliere to —perhaps with his eye on State once again. Among the top items on Biden's agenda: making sure that Obama has better luck in November than Kerry did. That means, first, relentlessly attacking and counterattacking the Republicans on the campaign trail, especially on national-security issues. And, second, relentlessly defining John McCain as "joined at the hip" to Bush, as Biden put it in a speech in Washington on Tuesday. Read more...

I finally get to do this after 2 1/2 years...
FIRST :P
If Joe Biden becomes Secretary of State
Julianne has an outfit to die for laid out for him.
But for the n and the want of a t
Ol' Joe would be a bidet.
“That was what we were led to believe”
Frankly, I don't care who Obama picks for the various adminstration positions ... as long as he doesn't pick right-wing nutjobs.
Obama's choosing his cabinet?
Uh - isn't there a convention or something coming up?
This is like Gotti taking over from Castelano.
Just give me Edwards as Attorney General, give Hillary the ambassadorship in Sarajevo, and I don't care about the rest.
Let's see, should Obama win, then State of Illinois loses one Dem. U.S.Senator. If
Obama appoints Biden as Sec. of State, Deleware loses another Dem. U.S. Senator.
And rumors are flying that Dodd to( a Dem. U.S. Senator) may very well be appointed
by Obama to a Cabinet position. So with the U.S. Senate now composed of 49 Dems,
49 Republicans and 2 Independents, if THREE Dems are then removed, WE are no longer
assured of having control of the U.S. Senate...unless someone can assure me that the
three vacant position will automatically be filled by electing Democrats...Just saying
JacksonH @ 5:
There's still plenty of time for Obama dissenters to find a safe haven out of the country somewhere.
I want to see Hillary on the Supreme Court just to hear the collective BOOM! of reich-wing skulls imploding across this country.
I like Biden a lot. I also think he's kicking ass on foreign policy for Obama. I just get nervous at all the senate names getting kicked around for admin positions. We dont want to gut the senate at a time when it will probably have a real majority.
"McSame = McBush"
It's not complicated.
This will become the easiest winning strategery in the history of American presidential politics.
i've listened to biden on many occasions and i would be very comfortable with him on the staff of obama in a very high advising capacity. He has been a real bright light, unafraid to speak his mind on the issues and not afraid to call imcompetence or criminal acts against the constitution what they are. Obama, take heed and take this statesman on your staff. First order of business: begin looking into criminal behavior on the part of the current administration and followed by incarceration and/or impeachment proceedings. second order of business, get rid of that little weasel, joe lieberman. throw him out on his traitor ass. mealy mouth spineless turncoat that he is. And if nancy still sticks to it's not even on the table agenda, get rid of her too. even if she does an aboutface, it may be too late. lastly any of the people in the party who would still support lieberman need to go as well in no uncertain terms. CLEAN HOUSE. This country needs an enema.

William @ 6:
And Bill will represent the US for the Swedish Bikini Team?
Doggiebobo @ 7:
That will be overcome by the twenty-something Repug senators up for re-election this year. they too will be delt the 'Hand of Death' (ie attached to Bush)
Biden would be great. A good choice in order to alleviate the vacant Senate seat problems (very legitimate concern, there) would be Bill Richardson. Any takers?
JacksonH @ 5:
Yes. There's a convention. Hillary is on the bunting committee. ; 0 )
OH LORD HAVE MERCY...do you think McCain will pick a democrat as his secretary of state.
Gee answer me this...the blue pill poppers are saying this is the end of Hillary's career...heck fire how about dodd, kerry and the rest of the white male jelly ball brigade....oh I know..if you are a woman if you loose an election it is the end but if you are a man it don't mean a thing...Just like the bloggers and the MSM have done since the very day Hillary announced her candidate for president they slurred they flamed and they swiftboated. I guess the wimper they are they more they slur Hllary...
What in the devil are these jelly balls gonna do when obama gets wiped out the GE map.
Doggiebobo @ 7:
Ok. I will assure you. Do you feel assured now?
Yeah. Biden as SoS. Maybe he can do for foreign relations what he did for the credit card companies with his freaking heinous bankruptcy bill.
Just as long as nobody expects him to represent anyone but MBNA.
Marge @ 17:
I enjoy your posts Marge. They're kinda like Miller lite. Less filling. But tastes great.
Let's win the election first, then worry about this stuff.
Liberal AND Proud @ 19:
\
O.K., you have made my day with your insightful input...Thanks..
joe biden drives the real straight talk express . . . and he views public service as an honor and a duty, not as a get rich quick scheme . . . making him secretary of state would be a giant step toward the 180 this country needs to take
Marge @ 18:
hillary and bill are their own worst enemies, they don't need to be slurred, flamed or swiftboated (however ridiulous a charge that is you make), they made a mockery of themselves enough without any outside interference.
Go Joe!
liberal traitor @ 16:
Not sure of what you speak? Bill Richardson is Gov. of N.Mexico...and it is, again,
rumored that should Obama win, Richardson would receive a Cabinet appointment,
so I would assume that would eliminate him as a candidate for U.S. Senator in New
Mexico..
Doggiebobo @ 7:
Jeebus christ!! We're about to lose our senator - I didn't think this one through!
*
I've always been of two minds regarding Biden. I like him, he articulates policy in a very effective way, he's smart....and then there's his vote on the credit card companies' ass-sucking bankruptcy bill. That was an instant buzz killer for me. on the other hand, I couldn't care less about his old plagiarism rap.
Besides...with whom do we replace these Democratic senators if they get sucked into cabinet positions?
This is just the beginning of some broader recognition of what real "leadership" can achieve: building a team with the highest quality people possible to tackle the incredible tasks ahead. Obama has lots of really good folks to draw on and just this new emphasis on competence rather than loyalty will positively impact both our domestic affairs and, more importantly, our rapidly sinking image abroad. Now, if only HC and her band of whiners would just take the high road and gracefully bow out, we could focus on the critical task of assuring we don't continue the absurdities of governance of the past 8 years.
Biden? Me thinks this man speaks with forked tongue.
I also have mixed feelings about Biden. But he might be a great SofS. Might be good to get him out of the Senate . . . .
I wonder if his state has a Dem or re-PIG governor. . . ?
He has to pick a Dem -- Re-PIG-lics don't believe is talking to the bad-guys.

TROY, Mich. - Barack Obama said Monday he and rival Hillary Rodham Clinton will be "working together in November" despite fears by some that the Democratic Party will be divided after the long and bitter primary campaign.
LOL here we go again. In "November". Sound familiar?
The thought of Biden in place of Condi is pleasing.
He's a little goofy, but he sure as hell isn't maliciously and malignantly corrupt and dishonest.

Didn't elaborate? Oh okay man I'll just take your word of it man! Whatever! Thanks for Sharing!
Both Biden and Richardson are foreign policy experts, but Bill Richardson has the proven record as a diplomat. Can Biden say the same?
No offence, but I highly doubt McCain will pick Biden as Secretary of State.

ysbaddaden @ 14:
Swedish Bikini Team? Whatever that is is giving Bill way too much credit. He prefers rough-looking pigs (Paula Jones, Hillary, the fat intern, and that bleached-blonde bimbo), so he'll be more than content getting "R&R" in Skopje.

What a hoot...thanks for making me laugh out loud..

The brazen in your face wing nuttery and flip flopping of McCain or the smooth and slick say one thing then toss you under the bus Daley inspired "creativity" of Obama.
Hmmm, that might work... I could get behind a Biden in the sec of state role... There are a few other names I'd like to see in a Obama cabinet including A. Gore and even H. Clinton. Hey, just because my feelings on her as president have waned, that doesn't mean I don't think she has something to offer or isn't an intelligent woman and politician. She is both intelligent and can offer something useful to the nation. We'll need the brightest minds we can find to fix the mess these Bush dullards have made and both Hillary and Al Gore qualify as bright minds and their names need to be in that mix..... Edwards and possibly Kucinich as well..................JD

I'm pretty sure he will be appointing some Republicans. Hope they aren't of the right wing nut job ilk. I doubt it but you never know.
I hope he doesn't bring any nut jobs in, far right or far left.
He seems pretty much a moderate though given his base of support and surrogates among the Washington insiders.
From what I understand though he will be bringing in a lot of people from outside Washington.
Should be interesting.
I wonder how many of his inside Washington machine are going to get anything or are going to feel seriously betrayed.
Maybe he can bring Alice Palmer up for a position. I'd say he owes her something.
William @ 6:
Edwards as AG?
Why?
just wondering.
Do you think he will go after the current criminals in the current coup?
I'm not convinced of that but if he will then, sure, why not.
I think he would be better in something that has to do with a populist, for the people kind of thing. Make a new cabinet position as Clinton suggested, one dedicated to eradicating poverty. He would have 8 years which would be a great start.
Clinton/Sarejevo.
LOL! mean- but funny anyway.
I enjoy humor even at Clinton's expense.
Yup, I'm a supporter. I came late to her party but hey, what can I say, as I researched I became an admirer and impressed. Surprised the hell out of me!
Why not give Colin Powell a chance to redeem himself?

Ef um.
However I'm not sure she can't do more powerful work in the Senate... or as AG as far as getting the bastards investigating and prosecuted.
Who else would have the testicular fortitude?LOL
And don't forget she does have cause to enjoy it if anyone does.
They put her through hell to get the little prick elected IMHO.
She needs to be somewhere her strength, tenacity, gumption and willingness to finish what she starts can be used to its fullest capacity.
Frankly, much as everyone is screaming for her to get out...(with 2 left? little silly) I've grown to admire her for exactly those qualities.
liberal traitor @ 16:
I agree about Biden.
Richardson will be VP or another cabinet position.
He was promised something is my guess.
Just my guess.
But definitely Biden somewhere.
Maybe VP?
He is a great attack dog.
I happen to really like the guy despite some flaws.
Who doesn't have flaws and baggage?
It's politics.
He is so tough.
why doesn't joe biden just go screw himself.
why he has even a shred of reputation as "a good guy" is beyond me after his performance in re the bankruptcy bill.
he showed the country where his allegiance lies -- and it is not with "we the people."
he is the senator for mnba.
Early in the campaign season, Biden rejected this idea, but pols say a lot during campaign series.
Biden would be a great choice. He's smart, honest and tough. It would go along way to bring back the rest of the world to maybe look at the US in a favorable light. He also is the only one with a workable plan for Irag.
To paraphrase Shakespeare: "The first thing we do is appoint longtime beltway insiders to key cabinet positions." Sounds like "change" to me [snark]
Watching what passes for politics in the United States - Janus Party Kabuki - is depressing at best, crushingly sad at worst.
For those of us outside both "parties" I'm not feeling very optimistic.
Edwards as AG, so there's someone to keep the corporations in line -- someone that they fear. These murderous, kleptocratic bastards in this administration will never see a minute of jail... unless they're rendered to the Hague. That would be fun.

Biden, early on, "The president needs to level with the American people about how hard this is going to be, and WE NEED MORE TROOPS"
Not sure how the second half of the sentence will fly with the left, but the fact is that Biden was right from day one and had the balls to go on as many outlets as he could to get the message out as clearly as possible.
Thanks to George W. Bush, many, many Americans died unnecessarily, even if we put aside the question of whether or not we should have invaded in the first place.
Attaboy George. Heck of a job.
I'd much rather see Richardson as Sec State. He has the personable diplomatic skill and experience to get the job done expertly. Remember, it was Richardson that got our hostages back from boogieman Saddam through peaceful face to face negotiations. I wouldn't mind Richardson as VP, but he didn't do himself any big favors in the debates; in one on one interviews and on the stump while interacting with voters, however, he is terrific.
Biden is perfect right where he is in the Senate. There is a lot of tough work that needs to be done in Congress, and we need to be adding to our pool of strong arm Senators. Biden, Dodd, Feingold, Webb, even Clinton -they all should be untouchable as appointments go, and should lead the fight in the Senate chambers.
Edwards might be a better Sec.Labor and have former prosecuter and Governor Janet Napolitano be AG. Elizabeth Edwards should be appointed to the new possition of Healthcare Czar.
Hagel should be SecDefense. Thad Allen SecHomeland Security. If Powell wants to redeem himself, first he needs to come clean, then he needs to start with a less influencial possition, maybe SecVA. Though I would rather see that go to Paul Rieckhoff.
VP should no doubt be Kathleen Sebelius.
Joe Biden for Secretary of State?
He's Just Biden His Time.
No, Bill Richardson for Secretary of State if not VP.
L.A. Confidential @ 8:
You said it.
These Obama dissenters are nothing.
They are not patriotic.
They don't support our troops.
They should all leave the country on the first boat and die.
I see Biden as VP; He's a big-time draw in Obama trouble spots e.g., PA and FL. Richardson or Susan Rice as SOS; H. Clinton heading HHS; Sibelius for Interior. Wes Clark for DOD.
RightOn @ 68:
bwahahahaa
What would Sebelius have anything to do as Sec Interior? It is more of an environmental role. It is also an opportunity to be truely bipartisan and appoint a solid envornmentalist republican- Lincoln Chaffee.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Secretary_of_the_Interior
Now that I've had time to finish work (and my childish rant here) here's what I'd like to see:
Gore in position as secretary of the interior, or head of the EPA. Though I doubt he'll take that considering he's got more sway as a non-government affiliated spokesman.
Edwards - my choice for prez - would make a fantastic AG, or as someone said upthread, secretary of labor.
Richardson would be a great VP, but I believe he'd also make a great Sec of State.
Biden... well, I personally don't like him for a lot of what he's done, but he would be effective in an Obama cabinet.
Dodd, Clark, the Kuch, and many of the others that were in the race this year all would be fantastic in roles of importance. Any chosen would serve the country well.
And that one Governor from Kansas would make a great VP, and while her name escapes me ATM, I'd be full bore behind her being chosen over any of the aforementioned candidates.
One last one of mention that people leave out, and a personal favorite: Barney Frank.
We should have Obama create "Department of Religion and Family Values" and put Frank in charge, just to blow a few wingnut's heads. (In seriousness, however, I do think Frank would be one hell of a great asset to the cabinet. One of the few reps that whenever I see him, catch me in awe about his awesomeness when it comes to smacking down some shmuck Repub.)
Oh, and one more strike against Biden as SecState- his partition plan for Iraq is NOT a very good idea.
Secretary of State is the perfect job for Joe Biden. Or Christopher Dodd.
I can't wait for the Democrats to get into office. If nothing else, it means getting rid of all the cheap crooks in the Bush administration. The day Bush leaves office will be one of the happiest days in America history. Parties in the street!
Doggiebobo @ 7:
Great point. Unless we're talking about states that Democratic governors can appoint a fill-in until the next election, they seriously have to be careful here. However, I am ABSOLUTELY behind getting Hillary to the Supreme Court. NY won't elect a Repub Senator no matter what.
For Veep...I just can't figure out who would be the best electorally and also as it would relate to the job. One thing about tabbing a Senator for the Veep spot, it's not completely subtracting from the majority in the Senate (as the Veep effectively cancels that out in tight votes). At this point I'd say Richardson, Dodd or a woman. That would kill the anti-Obama crowd that would plan on crashing the convention to support Hillary and keep the party divided.
As to a potential cabinet should B.O. win it all, I would ask (he will most likely say 'no') Dick Lugar (R-IN) to be Sec'y of State in a show of bi-partisan outreach. Lugar isn't a neo-con and spoke out against Bush and the surge. He was one of a few Repub. to do so. Otherwise Richardson for that appointment.
Additionally, since Edwards isn't a senator, his selection as Attorney General would seem fairly obvious. Then, if another Supreme Court Justice retires or passes in the first four years of B.O's term, Edwards could be elevated as the next justice, adding more balance to the Court. :)
And I just don't see anyway around having Webb as Sec. of Defense UNLESS Obama coaxes Colin Powell out of retirement. (Talk about a slap in the face of the current morons in office !)
And finally, Harold Ickes for Ambassador of Iceland !
Joe Biden would make a terrific SecState.
Another reason to not vote for Obama. Biden was one of the major supporters of the Screw the little guy Bankruptcy bill that makes it easier for the filthy rich to file for Bankruptcy and keep their money but screws the little guys who have to go into hock just to pay medical bills. He is a hack so entrenced in Washington that if Obama picks him for anything it will give support to the lie that is Obamas supposed "Change we can BeLIEve in" Ha! And gee I wonder why Biden supported the Bannkruptcy bill....Most credit card comapnies have their corporate headquaters in Delaware and give GENEROUSLY to Biden...same ol same ol!
karen marie @ 58:

I could be wrong, but wasn't it Joe Biden who was behind the credit card and banking legislation that now allows hospitals and banks to foreclose on homes from senior citizens ?
Ya, he's a prince. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/20/business/20taxes.html
Personally I prefer Bill Richardson as Secretary of State. Don't have anything against Biden though really.
What is with all these people who want to pull Democrats like Hillary and Joe Biden out of the Senate where they are in safe seats and move them into the VP slot or Sec of State?
NO! You want as many strong Senate seats as possible! When there is an outside chance of having a 60% majority, KEEP EVERY SENATOR THERE. There are plenty of capable Democratic people to fill the Secretary of State, but it costs a freaking lot of money and effort to replace Senators - and risking safe seats unnecessarily seems to be less than wise. A lot less than wise.
Yes, you can make arguments about Governors naming fill-in Senators (not all states do that and they often have to have a real election before the term is over). And you can argue that in some states it doesn't matter, because the Dems can fill it readily.
But then that Senator is low on every Senate totem pole. Why do that? It makes no sense.
I vote this one down.
Why the hell would you put any of the people -- like Joe Biden -- who voted to give Bush authority for the Iraq war in the top foreign policy job in the country? What kind of deranged mind would think that was a good idea?
Of the three Senate committees that had access to the best intelligence on iraq before the AUMF vote -- Intelligence, Armed Services, and Foreign Relations -- the one chaired by Biden (Foreign Relations) was the only one where a majority of the Democrats on the committee voted for the AUMF, and Biden was the only chair of those three committees to vote for the AUMF.
He screwed up the biggest foreign policy decision of his 35 years in the Senate (although it's far from the only one).
Joe Biden seems smart, but he also has one of the worst cases of verbal diarrhea I've ever seen. Having a SoS who runs at the mouth is not a good thing.
If he wants to make sure that Obama fares better than Kerry in ')$, they are going to have to commit right now to pursuing election rigging and electronic vote counting fraud to the very end. The GOPer's are just hoping that McCain can come within enough points to make subsequent electronic theft of the election look plausible.
He is over qualified if you look at what Condoleezza Rice has done.
