McCain's Lobbyist Friends

One of the big stories with Obama now leading the DNC is that he has announced that not only will his presidential campaign not accept lobbyist donations, neither will the DNC any longer. And while McCain has made some tentative statements about public financing of his campaign, he has yet to commit to anything, other than the sheer number of lobbyists working on his campaign.

The DNC has put out this ad tying McCain to his lobbyists buddies. From the press release:

"While Senator McCain talks about transparency and accountability on the campaign trail, back home in Washington he and the lobbyists in his inner circle refuse to apply those same standards to his own campaign," said DNC Communications Director Karen Finney. "Senator Obama and the Democratic Party have promised to change the way business is done in Washington and are taking real steps to ensure that the American people's priorities dominate the agenda in Washington. If Senator McCain is serious about his call to clean up Washington, he should join us. Otherwise, Senator McCain is once again showing why he is the wrong choice for America's future."

A little fact checking, courtesy of the DNC, on McCain's Lobbyist Brigade below the fold:

FACT CHECK:

JOHN MCCAIN'S LOBBYIST FRIENDS

Anti-Western Political Parties...

  • Campaign Manager Rick Davis's Firm Represented Anti-Western Political Party in Ukraine. "A consultant to Sen. John McCain hired a public-relations firm last year to burnish the U.S. image of a Ukrainian political party backed by Russian leader Vladimir Putin, according to documents filed with the Justice Department. The lobbying firm of Davis Manafort Inc. arranged for the public-relations firm's work through an affiliate last spring, at the same time Davis Manafort was being paid by the Republican presidential candidate's campaign. The firm is co-owned by lobbyist Rick Davis, manager of Sen. McCain's presidential campaign, and longtime Republican strategist Paul Manafort." [Wall Street Journal, 5/14/08]

Mob-Connected Russian Oligarchs...

  • Davis Introduced McCain to Putin-Ally, Mafia-Linked Russian Oligarch. While seeking to do business with him, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis - while simultaneously at the Reform Institute and lobbying for Davis Manafort - introduced McCain to Oleg Deripaska, a Putin ally whose U.S. visa was revoked due to suspicions over his ties to Russian organized crime. McCain, Deripaska and Davis rendezvoused at least twice - first in January 2006 in Davos, then during a codel in Montenegro in August 2006. [Washington Post, 1/25/08]

The Saudi Royal Family...

  • Former Campaign Finance Chair Tom Loeffler Lobbied McCain for Saudi Clients. "But the fallout may not be over. One top campaign official affected by the new policy is national finance co-chair Tom Loeffler, a former Texas congressman whose lobbying firm has collected nearly $15 million from Saudi Arabia since 2002 and millions more from other foreign and corporate interests, including a French aerospace firm seeking Pentagon contracts. Loeffler last month told a reporter 'at no time have I discussed my clients with John McCain.' But lobbying disclosure records reviewed by NEWSWEEK show that on May 17, 2006, Loeffler listed meeting McCain along with the Saudi ambassador to 'discuss US-Kingdom of Saudi Arabia relations.'" [Newsweek, 5/26/08: http://www.newsweek.com/id/137522]

Companies doing business in Iran...

  • McCain Campaign Manager Rick Davis Represented Ukrainian Companies Doing Business in Iran. "Before Rick Davis began serving as John McCain's campaign manager, his lobbying firm had a pretty cosmopolitan set of clients. For example, Ukranian billionaire Rinat Akhmetov, who has several business links to Iran... Davis Manafort was helping Akhmetov's conglomerate, System Capital Management Holdings, to develop a "corporate communications strategy" between the beginging of 2005 through the end of summer 2005, the company said. The company's subsidiary, Metinvest, a steel company, has one of its 11 offices in Tehran. And another subsidiary, Khartsyzsk Pipe Plant, sells large pipes to Iran. Those business ties go back to at least 2005, when Davis Manafort was working for the company, according to a handful of stories in business publications like the Russia & CIS Metals and Mining Weekly and the Mining and the Metals report, which we found on Nexis." [TPM, 5/30/08: http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/05/before_rick_davis_began_servin.php]

The Brutal Myanmar Junta...

  • Doug Goodyear Left Campaign After Revelations His Firm Represented Myanmar Regime. "The man picked by the John McCain campaign to run the 2008 Republican National Convention resigned Saturday after a report that his lobbying firm used to represent the military regime in Myanmar. Doug Goodyear resigned as coordinator of the Twin Cities convention and issued a two-sentence statement." [Associated Press, 5/11/08]
  • Goodyear and Doug Davenport, Regional Campaign Manager, Tied to Oppressive Myanmar Junta. "ABC News' Jan Simmonds reports: Two of Sen. John McCain' campaign aides resigned this weekend after media reports brought to light their ties to a lobbying group that once represented the military junta of Burma, which the regime calls Myanmar. The aides, Douglas Goodyear, who was tapped as the GOP Convention Coordinator, and Doug Davenport, a regional manager focusing on the mid-Atlantic states, both worked for DCI. The firm was hired in 2002 to represent Burma's military junta to try to begin a dialogue of political reconciliation with the United States." [ABCNews.com, 5/11/08]

...and some of history's Most Brutal Tyrants.

  • Charlie Black Pioneered the "Revolving Door Between Campaign Consulting and Lobbying." "Then in his 30s, Black already had established himself as a pioneer of the revolving door between campaign consulting and lobbying, having been a senior adviser on President Ronald Reagan's reelection campaign before returning to K Street. And his clients, as often as not, were foreign leaders eager to burnish their reputations...The lobbying shop represented Bethlehem Steel, the Tobacco Institute and the government of the Philippines. The political consulting firm helped elect a slew of lawmakers -- including Sens. Phil Gramm, Jesse Helms, Charles McC. Mathias Jr., Arlen Specter, Paula Hawkins and David F. Durenberger -- who worked on legislation that directly impacted the firm's clients." [Washington Post, 5/22/08]
  • "Longtime Uber-Lobbyist" Helped Burnish Reputations of Some of the World's Worst Tyrants." "Longtime uber-lobbyist Charles R. Black Jr. is John McCain's man in Washington, a political maestro who is hoping to guide his friend, the senator from Arizona, to the presidency this November. But for half a decade in the 1980s, Black was also Jonas Savimbi's man in the capital city. His lobbying firm received millions from the brutal Angolan guerrilla leader and took advantage of Black's contacts in Congress and the White House." [Washington Post, 5/22/08]
  • Black's Client List a Whose Who of Repressive Rulers. "In addition to Savimbi, Black and his partners were at times registered foreign agents for a remarkable collection of U.S.-backed foreign leaders whose human rights records were sometimes harshly criticized, even as their opposition to communism was embraced by American conservatives. They included Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire, Nigerian Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, Somali President Mohamed Siad Barre, and the countries of Kenya and Equatorial Guinea, among others." [Washington Post, 5/22/08]

Hang on kids, the ride's just starting to get interesting. Gramps likely to need to use the airsick bag before it's over.

This is what we need! A strong and unambiguous campaign linking McCain to corruption and incompetence.

This is what I just love about the move to divest the DNC and the Democratic Party more generally of PAC/lobbyist money. Not only is it the right think to do, but it's a marvelous club with which to pound mcsame. Obama doesn't need to take money from PAC/lobbyists, mcsame does - if he doesn't he's out of cash, but if he does he's gonna get hammered day in and day out with questions about whose interest he's working for. This is a thing of beauty.

♥♥Friends in U.S. America, there is a letter being sent around by trolling republicans asking us to boycott donating to the DNC. If I can find a copy I will post it here. You can get information about it by going on "the" Google and searching for DNC donations boycott.
The slimy bastards don't want us to be able to be better than they so they stoop to the very basic slime.

Here is a link to go to make donations to the DNC, pass it around, we need to have a huge ground swell of grass-root donations to beat these bastards.

Go to https://www.democrats.org/page/contribute give as much as you can, Lets take back our country and make it so we can be proud again.

Oh, John McCain "took on the lobbyists" alright...

Where have you gone Joe Dimaggio, a nation turns it's lonely eyes to you........woo, woo, woo...

Check out who else Charlie Black is in cahoots with:

Maybe I'm too picky, but I wish people would learn proper English, especially thoss who have English as their prime and only language

'AND WHOM HAVE THEY REPRESENTED?'

would have been proper.

#7 s/b 'whom else Charlie Black....'

The most frequent offender is O'Reilly who does not know when it's WHO or WHOM, who said Saddam was hung, not hanged [maybe he was hung, but how would O'Reilly know?], who said yesterday that the man who was hit by a car was laying in the street even though he was lying there.

Perhaps Saddam was hung and hanged?

It certainly is good to see Obama finally renounce his ties to the lobbying industry, since according to the Centre for Responsible Politics, the top five contributors to Obama's campaign have been registered corporate lobbyists. Apparently the feeling in the Obama camp is to make a clean sweep now before word gets out how connected he is to the top lobbying organizations. But then again it should also be remembered that, according to investigator Pam Martens, "Seven of the Obama campaigns top 14 donors consisted of officers and employees of the same Wall Street firms charged time and again with looting the public and newly implicated in originating and/or bundling fraudulently made mortgages." When will Obama's loyal followers realize that this [alleged] agent of hope and change is not as pure as the driven snow?

For those Obama followers who are actually interested in the truth, it would be instructive for them to read this article about Obama's ties to big corporations.

How does a lobbyist contribute to someone's campaign without any nebulous inferences?

let's just keep getting the word out!

And all this doesn't include Charlie Black's involvement in the coronation of right-wing cult leader Sun Myung Moon and his wife some years back.

ronhohn @ 11:

it's quite clear, actually.

Isn't McSame still on the hook for accepting public finance money (and refusing other contributions)? He just got $21 mil in the last month? Oh, now I remember--Bush disabled the FEC on purpose.

enough @ 15:

yep. now who can determine what wrongdoing took place?

if that's a TV ad, they'd better add a voice-over...

my tv is on in the other room... this would be lost in that situation...

When you're John McCain, and your economic policies are written by some of the most notorious lobbyists to sniff Washington, is it any surprise that John McCain would have his head up his tuchus with regard to economic policy? What other policies is John McCain misfiring on? Hmmm...let's try his alignment with Bush's Social Security fiasco. Or John McCain's love-affair with NAFTA. Think lobbyist ties didn't have anything to do with those?

And let's not forget some of John McCain's other born-again positions now that he's the GOP nominee, like his sudden distaste for Roe v. Wade, or John McCain's refusal to consider expanding, like Bush, health insurance for children. Or his strange view that the GI bill is, for John McCain, too generous.

John McCain is simply not going to cut it on any of the important domestic, or foreign issues. Which is why I won't be voting for John McCain.

As an RPCV who served in Ukraine from 2005-2007, I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt, the "Anti-Western Political Party" depicted in this horribly-constructed ad is, in fact, Ukrainian president Victor Yushchenko's PRO-WESTERN Orange party. Who the hell did the fact checking for this horrible ad?

Lawrence
RPCV Ukraine 05-07

John McCain wants to stay in Iraq indefinitely.

When people hear about lobbyists, most yawn. It's an esoteric world how these people work and the vast majority wont ever know the scale of corruption and influence of these people.

Why not some information on lobbyists for healthcare, and how they bought Hillary so many years ago?

Truly, everyone has lobbyists, and "soft money" or however the term is couched is still something most know or care little about.

And to use the picture of revolutionary party in the Ukraine is really piss poor. These people and their poisoned leader fought for freedom and independence from Russian repression.

Oh yea, we sat that one out too.

Good to know McCain is just a McSame McBush:

I bet McSame's defense contractor lobbyists have a solid interest in keeping us in Iraq for one hundred years.

O'Reilly, lying about laying a hung hanged Saddam in the street?

Somehow, I could picture that...

John McCain voted to filibuster minimum wage hike
John McCain's housing policy was shaped by lobbyist
John McCain and George W. Bush want to privatize Social Security
John McCain loves NAFTA
John McCain would be "fine" keeping troops in Iraq for "a hundred years"
John McCain thinks George W. Bush was right to veto kids health insurance expansion
John McCain does not support the troops
John McCain wants to overturn the law that legalized abortion
John McCain loves George W. Bush's Iraq strategy

It is really a sad thing that the Democrats have to resort to such an ad. It seems such a shame that intelligent dialouge can no longer hold anyones attention, and the Democrats now have to resort to using the same smear techniques as the Rebublicans.

It is truly not fair to compare McCain to Bush, he hasn't quite developed full blow Alzheimers yet.

BlueKnuckle @ 2:

Too true, this list should be posted, published, printed on every damn blog the length and breadth of the US. I'll be quoting it in letters to editors and will send that shit house rat O'Reilly a copy. He wont use it but he will get the message. A copy to McCain as well, in fact copies all over the place. Show this country just what type of person McCain has been hiring and working with.

If this ban is like the ban for Obama's campaign, only registered federal lobbyists are prohibited from contributing. Friends and family of registered federal lobbyists MAY donate. Also STATE lobbyists, from whom Obama has received a great deal of money, may donate.

I want lobbyist influence reduced as much as the next person, but I don't think this kind of selectivity will rid us of that poison.

Not to mention, of course, that David Axelrod was a lobbyist for the energy industry, and in particular, Exelon.

Obama's legislation that was watered down "regulating" Exelon's nuclear leaks was a DIRECT result of Axelrod's lobbying on Exelon's behalf.

The Chicago political machine is the epitome of lobbyists and pay-to-play, folks.

Let's not play drama queen by suggesting anything else.
