My blog buddy skippy and I have had a friendly debate going for a couple of years now, on cover songs. I'm of the position that it's rarely a good idea, and that certain songs should NEVER ever be recorded again, they were already performed in the definitive way. Unless an artist has something radically new and different in interpretation, stick with your own songs.

And skippy is more open-minded than me, which is to his credit. You have to be something special to record a Beatles song. And these guys are special: She & Him. Comprising actress Zooey Deschanel and indie popster M. (Matt) Ward, She & Him have done a wonderful album of both originals and tasty covers, including this completely original take of The Beatles' "I Should Have Known Better":
