I think this is my favorite piece of video footage since Jon Stewart told off Tucker Carlson on Crossfire. Seriously, watch it again and again, it just gets better.

At the National Conference for Media Reform, Bill O'Reilly producer Porter Barry ambushes journalist Bill Moyers and asks him why he won't appear on The O'Reilly Factor. Moyers, a class act to the last, makes Barry look like the small and petty man he is. But the joke is on Barry, because other journalists, including Uptake correspondent Noah Kunin, who got this raw footage, turned tables on ol' Porter and gave him a little taste of the FOX News-style ambush journalism. I don't think he liked it much.

By the way, Moyers gave an absolutely inspirational keynote address at NCMR2008. You can view it on YouTube.

Porter Barry could not answer the question of whether he is a journalist because he would not admit that he is simply a hack, a go-fer, for a former tabloid "journalist" like O'Reilly. The last thing that people like Barry and O'Reilly wish to do is to engage in any kind of introspection as to whether they lead a moral and just life. Like Paul Newman's character, Eddie Felson, said to George C. Scott's character Bert, in The Hustler, people like Porter Barry, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hanity, Roger Ailes, Rush Limbaugh, et al, do not feel anything because they are empty inside. They will say anything, prostitute themselves, seek the lowest common denominator, in order to attract those coveted ratings. Ethics and morality are an abstract concept to these self-righteous hypocrites, similar in a sense to how many Americans ignore the suffering and misery that the U.S. military has inflicted upon the Iraqi and Afghani people. Out of sight, out of mind.

Moyers lays out the lies of the neocons and the complicit media so well as only he can:

"We now know a neocon is an arsonist who sets the house on fire, and 6 years later boasts that no one could put it out. You couldn't find a more revealing measure of the state of the media today than the continuing ubiquitous presence on the air and in print of the very pundits and experts, self-selected message multipliers of a disastrous foreign policy, who got it all wrong in the first place. It just goes to show when the bar is low enough, you can never be too wrong.

...Sadly, in many respects, the fourth estate has become the fifth column in
democracy colluding with the powers that be in a culture of deception that
subverts the thing most necessary to freedom: the truth."

I've seen the glory that is Fox*News* and I cannot help but turn it off. Do people like Porter Barry sleep at night ? That I do wonder. Uncovering the news doesn't mean chasing/cornering a respected guy like Bill Moyers - it's not because the like of Sean Hannity/Michael Savage say that Moyers is evil that makes it so. In fact, the more I think about it and also reference the Fox*News* clips from the 90's when Clinton was office that I think these guys are two-faced angels making deals with the journalistic demon that is Ruppie. The color of people's skin really shouldn't make a difference in life, BUT IT DOES ! And continuously listening to people talk about reverse-racism (sic) just drives me to believe that Fox(news) still has an audience, because many are unwilling to face the ugly reality that inhabits us all if we let it. Bill Moyers is just like many honest men and women before him, he is just trying to bring a little humanity to the dialogue that is sorely missing when two Animal Farm-like wealthy characters discussing the news exemplify. Seriously folks, this clip reminds me a little of Morgan Spurlock traveling through the world to find Osama Bin Laden, because many would immediately think that the people of Lebanon are all terrorists, but come talk to me, I've got friends that I've known my whole life that moved back to their parents' homeland (in the middle east), in order to be close to their grandparents. Will fox & friends ever show that side of the story ? NO !!!! It kills me ! Since you have such bread and butter kinda characters hosting that garbage that it must represent our opinions ? Doesn't it ? The answer is.... not in a million years.

Bill O'Reilly - making up fake publications to drive home his message of hate ! Way to go Bill, keep protecting your fake children from fake enemies, meanwhile, your filth is creating new ones everyday.

I love the ideals that America was founded on, it's the people on fox*news* (sic) that need a little TLC these days. Give a foxnoise anchor a hug today and tell them that Obama will make it all better, because Bush hates black people - it's true, look at his actions, not his moronic speeches, they mean little, especially considering the suffering that he has caused and our media has constantly tried to mask - go into the world, learn another language and bring back AL Jazeera English to the USA ! I just want to see more opinions - our current government wants to embody 1984 in the flesh !!! I am afraid and the more I know, the less I can offer any contritions to our W.

Ok, awesome, Bill O’Reilly and company are made to look like hypocrites or opportunists or maybe another choice word that escapes me. Yes, chalk one up for the liberals of our land. And another point; those of Oreilly’s ilk can never look good when we discuss the Iraq war since that was a giant error or evil act, how so ever you want to describe that. I get it. But by all means, if that is the same as saying Bill Moyers is now a saint and the most honorable bearer of truth, well then, I have to say that I feel sorry for those who come away with that. Because Bill Moyers has quite a bit to answer to (his God) and the way he has portrayed many issues, most especially his disingenuous portrayal of Christianity. These egregious acts, be they deliberate or naïve, are most dangerous in the greater scope of life. Ridicule O’Reilly all you want, but please don’t tell me Bill Moyers and his philosophy and theology on life is the answer to our prayers.

Yep, young Porter was way out of his league going up against a titan like Bill Moyers, a man with real class and integrity, a true patriot. Porter might want to consider doing his country a favor by turning his back on the Dark Side and taking Mr. Moyers up on his offer. I enjoyed that video immensely. This is what respectable journalist should be doing from all the networks - turn the table on Fox by giving them a dose of their own medicine, instead of trying to emulate them.

Stan's picture

I knew Porter Berry fifteen years ago when he was a production assistant on film and TV shows. He was a very nice guy back then, very generous but a diehard conservative always ranting about Big Government. He carried around a copy of Bill Bennett's Book of Virtues everywhere. He was not aggressive in his beliefs back then. He would let you talk and then he would offer his side. It was a decent debate. But I think he's fallen into a job he really secretly hates (He's not confrontational in real life and is quite soft) but he likes being called a "producer" (he enjoys dropping the term in his lame retorts to Moyers) and having a daddy figure like O'Reilly to tell him what to do with his life, even if he must attempt these awkward, feeble ambushes. The Republican Party is the "Daddy" party and that's perfect for Porter. That's why I really feel we are witnessing on this tape a kind of redemption of Porter. If anyone could do it, it would be Moyers, a Texan. Porter's from Oklahoma and must remind him of preachers or deacons in his Oklahoma church. When Moyers "lays hands" on Porter, I think it was too much for him. He had to go away to search for his soul in private. Either that or he went straight to Kinko's to print up some new resumes.

Bill O'Reilly was not, is not, and never will be a "real" journalist. He clearly has an agenda, uses inflammatory language, and spews out propaganda meant to fool the American public. In essence he is a great employee for his extremely rich and powerful boss, Rupert Murdoch. Does Bill really believe that media consolidation is good for the American public? Does he really believe that it is o.k. to focus the power of information in the hands of a few priviledged people? If so, then I have to believe that he is hanging with the craziest of crazies.

One thing you have to realize is Moyers is comforatable being on camera being asked questions and is used to giving speeches. If you are not comfortable being on camera, especially on a set, you are nervous and have some anxiety with all the lights, people and equipment and hubub. It's one of the ways O'Reilly can screw anyone who comes on his show who isn't a media person with experience being on shows being interviewed. BillO seems to like war...."War on Christmas," "War on Easter," "War on Christianity," war this, war that! Now, instead of skirmishes here and there, it will be full scale war between Billo and Fox vs. the "liberal media."

I hate to say it, but I actually feel kind of sorry for old Porter. After all, he is just a pawn who has sipped too much of BillO's Kool-Aid.

Man do I feel for journalists. Man is that one whore of a job. If this is what a journalist must do to make a living then I feel sorry for the whole community. I thought the job was to report facts with honor and truth. Now I see it for what they really are propagandists.

For some reason it made me think of the old Batman TV show when some villain would ambush the hero on a rooftop only to fall to his own death and Adam West would shake his head and mutter, "The poor, deluded fool".

Moyers Awards:
Awards

Recipient of the 2006 Lifetime Emmy, "Bill Moyers has devoted his lifetime to the exploration of the major issues and ideas of our time and our country, giving television viewers an informed perspective on political and societal concerns," according to the official announcement, which also noted, "the scope of and quality of his broadcasts have been honored time and again. It is fitting that the National Television Academy honor him with our highest honor – the Lifetime Achievement Award."[15] He has received well over thirty Emmys and virtually every other major television journalism prize, including a gold baton from the DuPont-Columbia Journalism awards, a lifetime Peabody award, and a George Polk Career Award (his third George Polk Award) for contributions to journalistic integrity and investigative reporting. Time to take out the trash.

I'm all for taking out the trash, but I want to see KO, tweety, and Russert in the dumpster as well. They
have done nothing the last six months but shill for
their chosen favorite. They give journalism a black eye.

That's for sure. Their schtick deserves a good amount of scrutiny. I predict that soon Matthew's thrill up his leg will be gone and he will be waxing eloquent about how yummy some republican man smells and looks. KO will facilate between trying to be Edward R. Murrow (what a joke), puppet theater and trashing people like Brittany Spears for the ratings. Not even close to Mr. Murrow. Let's get some integrety in positions that shape public opinion. It's not only time for a change in the inside the beltway politics but media as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Porter's best move career-wise would be to take Bill Moyers up on his offer and go on Bill's broadcast. Bill-o would fire him of course but other doors would likely open for him and maybe a book contract would be forthcoming.

I just realized that Porter guy reminded me of a less puffy Scott McClellan. Same kind of feebleness, except it's even less effective when you're trying to be the attacker rather than fielding questions -- imagine Scott trying to corner Helen Thomas. I agree Porter should go on Moyers's show. He should out his boss and write a book.

I know this is pure fantasy, but how great would it be if Bush and O'Reilly could both lose their jobs due to underlings they'd assumed were too feeble to ever threaten them?

when deceit meets the truth, deceit turns and runs. Moyers and truth stood strong and took the high ground, and that oreilly lapdog looked like a fool.
I wonder how he is going to sleep tonite. A few toss and turns wondering about his life choices and where he went down the road to get him where he is now, and where he didn't make a certain choice which might have led him to a life of integrity and happiness.

In order for that to happen those people would have to have a concience!!! (They Don't!)

Schadenfreude! That was sweet! Though calling Orally a "pugilist" was overly charitible; a pugilist bravely confronts other pugilists with whom they are well-matched. Orally is more like a mugger waiting in the alley with a blackjack for an unsuspecting victim.

Point out when and where Keith lied, please.

Read more closely,I didn't say any of them lied. I said that they lacked the requsite objectivity to be journalists.Rather
like some people at Fox news.

Their spin on the news is no better than that of Fox
news. Being in the tank for liberal candidates and policies
does not exactly make them, how shall we say "fair and balanced"

How's it feel to be OWNED by Bill Moyers?

No, you don't understand journalism. Journalism is allowed to have a point of view.

If you quote credible sources and get your facts straight and overtly correct your errors you are a journalist.

Objectivity? Is that even possible in a world where noone can know all the possible facts?

You misunderstand journalism and you are not alone.

Talk about faint praise…When the conversations on her show meander toward uncomfortable territory she quickly interupts and changes the subject.

(referring to Diane Rheme) ...agreed, she reminds me of Cokie Roberts, comes across as elitist and defender of established power where it serves her purposes...
