If McCain keeps this up, if these kinds of gaffs are routine, it is worth examining whether there is something more to them than understandable slips of the tongue. Obviously McCain knows that Putin is president of Russia. What's going on here is not ignorance, but dementia. Specifically, he has a form of frontotemporal dementia called Primary Progressive Aphasia. This is what's causing him to pull the wrong words out of the databank -- veto every beer, etc. It's also why it's difficult for him to read the teleprompter. It will progress slowly and may not become much more noticeable before December. On the other hand, other symptoms may become more evident. These often include personality changes, and compromised executive function, i.e. the ability to plan and organize goal-oriented activities. There's a chance he won't be the Republican nominee in November.
