The only thing the repubs want in regard to energy is to drill the hell out of America and the big oil companies want the same thing. They will consider no compromise and no other solution.

Lack of votes.

And if you say the Democrats are not complaining to the media well, you may be right, but we have no way of knowing. You can hold a press conference and complain, but if Britney has to undergo a tatoo removal or a white child is lost at the amusement park or a car runs into a house injuring noone you might not get covered.

There may be some Democrats who would benefit from allowing the big oil companies to drill the hell out of our coastlines and national parks. We could probably look at their last election or if they have one coming up and see who their biggest contributors are to find out who they are.

Mostly they don't even want to drill, they just want to book the reserves. There are already thousands of unused permits. When they do drill, they want only the easiest to access (i.e. highest profit) oil available.

The only way to solve this is to get politicians off of big oil's payroll. Good luck.

The theory that I've heard is that an impeachment now would be widely seen as a political maneuver in an election year and might rally sympathy and support to the repugs' side. If that's what the MSM is putting forth then that is probably how it would be presented to the public, right or wrong.

Just like so many other things during the past eight years the speculators are going unchecked and that's a part of the high price of oil. Remember the mortgage companies were left unchecked, even though there were laws that said they should have been. This didn't all happen by accident. There is always a method to their madness.

that is how the GOP would attempt to spin it, yes. no question there. just like every other investigation into GOP crimes.

and, like you said, the media would play right along.

yet, it is not just the right thing to do, the congress has a moral and legal obligation to start the impeachment trial. the dems shouldn't be afraid of how, in doing their VITAL job, the GOP will try to frame the issue. they should do what is right, and what the constitution impels them to do. if we want to be a nation of laws we should enforce them.

Well its more because of the low interest rates set by the fed- in the real estate market- those low interest rates by Greenspan led to all the malinvestment that caused the real estate bubble. The rate cutting the fed has been doing lately is also causing a sort of oil-bubble. But the largest reason for high oil prices is the low value of the US dollar- track the oil prices with the dollar movements and you'll see the relationship clearly.(even more clear is when you measure Oil in terms of Gold, the price has remained pretty stable, showing that low supply isn't the real problem at the moment). This certainly didn't happen by accident as our congress and the Federal reserve are the causes of inflation.

Just some speculation isn't powerful enough to have these types of prices. Saying that "If we only made sure there was regulation this could've been avoided" ignores the real root of the problem.

The idea of taxing Oil companies for having a certain profit level just isn't going to work- because they'll simply pass the cost onto the consumer in terms of higher oil prices. Focus has to be on this country's monetary policy- the sooner people talk about it, the better.

anon's picture

Any small step away from oil helps at this point. I am an all electric fan personally, but consider using CNG (natural gas). We have a lot of it, it polutes less, cars are readily available and convertable, it is cheap ($2.40 per gallon in Phoenix) and now even cheaper - as low as $1.50 per gallon in Phoenix (I dont live in Phoenix) from your home. Yes you read that right, your home. You can now fill your CNG car from home ...

http://www.myphill.com/

Since you probably already have natural gas to your home, this makes some sense. The system can be purchased from companies - wait for it - overseas. It isnt made in the US. That also makes sense in a twisted sort of way. We ALL have fueld IN OUR HOMES and not one US company makes a unit to put it IN YOUR CAR.

Figures huh?

Boehner (boner) was just on tv and he said the repubs in the house are going to bring up a way to halt or lower the price of gas every single day.

You can see where this is going. They are playing politics with this thing and trying to make the high prices the dems fault. They are going to say, more and more as we get closer to November, we could have brought gas prices down, but the dems wouldn't allow it. Vote for Repubs.

Trouble is, McCain is on record being against drilling in ANWR. Governor Crist (R) and Senator Nelson (D) here in Florida are also on record saying they do not support drilling off the coast of Florida.

Oil price surge not due to supply shortage: Qatar
Mon Jun 9, 2008 10:26am BST

DUBAI (Reuters) - Speculation on commodities markets caused the oil price surge last week, not any shortage supply shortage, the oil minister of OPEC member Qatar said.

Oil soared more than $16 a barrel -- over 13 percent -- in a two-day rally on Thursday and Friday on weakness in the U.S. dollar and rising tensions between Israel and Iran.

The volatility on oil prices in recent weeks, despite the fact there was no major rise in demand or fall in supply, was proof that speculation was moving the market, Abdullah al-Attiyah told Al Jazeera Television by telephone.

"The issue is not one of any supply crisis. There is no specter of a looming supply crisis," Attiyah said. "There is no clear reason or change in the supply map."

if the US had anything to do with it, it either takes the form of some repug-led de-regilation or it is the simple non-enforcement of existing regulations.

Additionally, the speculation doesn't always occur in the US market. over the last few weeks, oil has actually opened higher in US markets than it closed during the day. the specualtion is occurring in several markets around the world.

That may depend on whether crippling the world economy is something he's willing to ignore. $300to$400/barrel will bring the world economy to a standstill, including and especially China. That will force warfare wherever there is oil or the prospect of oil. The Amero-Saudi-british monopoly will be recognized as the biggest threat, IMHO. It won't end well for us.
