Tim Russert Gone, But Still Doing His Thing
First fatality of Cedar Rapids Flood reported. 59 year old woman, found in her basement on the SW side.
One pump operating in the city, supplying only 25% of the usual water output. Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha, and Robinson are being asked to use their water ONLY for drinking. 16 million gallon consumption per day must still go down to 12 million per day or they will have to start shutting down the water to parts of the city. We're trying, but we're still taxing the system.
Lots of rumors flying around. The local news is doing a great job, but have said they're resources are taxed, and their equipment is quickly getting worn down.
Iowa City is facing a dangerous night as the river rises.
Please keep Iowans, and other Midwesterners experiencing flooding, in your prayers.

This so so short and so absurd it should just be posted:
CNN’s Ware: Iraqis Reject Security Agreement Draft, May ‘Go It Alone’ And ‘Take Over This War’ From U.S.»
The Bush administration is currently trying to push Iraqis into accepting a indefinite long-term security agreement, with demands including nearly 60 permanent bases, immunity for foreign contractors, control over air space, and authorization for war with Iran.
But Iraqis are rejecting the administration’s stubborn attempts to control Iraq’s future. Today, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki remarked, “The American version of the agreement infringes hugely on the sovereignty of Iraq and this is something that we cannot ever accept.”
Today, CNN’s Michael Ware said the U.S. presented a second draft of the agreement, but Iraqis rejected it because the draft is “the same as the first.” According to Ware, many Iraqis now want to “go it alone” and may even “take over this war”:
WARE: What we’re also hearing from the Iraqi government is they may go it alone, using a hangover snippet of law left over from the original American occupation authority of Paul Bremer.
They could create their own legislation in their own Congress or Parliament, and thereby dictate to America what U.S. troops can and cannot do in this country, where they can go, where they must stay, and how many you’re allowed to have. So you may see the Iraqis taking over this war, and you may see a lot of U.S. gains being drawn back.
Ware explained that in his conversations with U.S. officials, they have accepted that Iraq “going it alone, passing its own laws” is indeed a “legally viable option.”
The negotiations on the long-term agreement are going so poorly that today, a senior government official “expressed doubt an agreement could be reached before the U.S. presidential election in November,” according to the AP.
The administration and its allies are still in a state of denial, however. “We know the Iraqis want us there,” said White House Press Secretary Dana Perino this week. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) absurdly claimed the dissent in Iraq regarding the agreement is a “sign of our success.”
I heard that the lower third of Indiana is under water, too, but it's not making the rounds in the news.
They don't seem to be doing too well there.
Thoughts and prayers to them all.

I'd heard that too, but our local news is focusing on Eastern Iowa. The flood water in Anamosa breeched the sewers, and they're asking people not to drive through Jones county. The entire town of Palo is completely evacuated. Vinton is pretty bad too, but the river is falling there. Actually, it's bad everywhere here--but that death above is the first reported. We're hoping it's all we'll have.
P.D. @ 31:
No, there's still drinking water--but it's still taxing the system. I heard their trucking water in to the stores. Businesses far from the river are closing because of the shortage.
I heard we have two days water left, but that could be a rumor. We have lots of rumors--but it's a fact that the system can't keep up the output the city demands with only one pump. I got a flier on my door this evening stressing that we can't bathe, wash clothes, brush our teeth, etc.
most of the people in cedar rapids could not buy flood insurance because they didn't live in the flood plain. many of the houses will be total losses.

Great Buffy quote, and thanks for the open-thread levity! That's one of my favorite dialogue exchanges from Buffy.
As for the heavy issues of the day: not a fan of Tim Russert's work but saddened by his death; Iowa's flooding, which is likely to get much worse--a time for Americans to help each other out, but will gas/food/mortgage costs keep us from being able to contribute to strangers?; a fairly strong earthquake just hit Japan, but so far the death/damage seems minimal; and, oh yeah, the human race is getting its first up-close microscopic look at the dirt of Mars with the Phoenix lander--come on, that's a great accomplishment! Sometimes, humanity does some pretty nifty things...
Thanks again for the grin-inducing thread quote.
Fortunately we're all okay and dry. My grandparents have well water, so if it does shut off my mother and I can go there. Friends too, if needed. I know so many people who had to evacuate, it's heart breaking. My best friend has a three year old, and she and her husband are with her mother, safe. I'm not sure about another friend, and am worried, because his house is in the 500 year flood plain, and I haven't heard from him since the evacuation order.
It's pretty bad. I mean, we do have water, and most of us have power outside of downtown now. But there are a lot of frightened people--buying all the water and perishable foods they can. It's just unbelievably sad.
MsJoanne @ 57:
I'd think that it works the other way- that insurance companies would want to collect premiums from those less likely to be flooded, and that those in the flood plain would be viewed as liabilities.
P.D. @ 41:
Katrina was it for me. Bush Co's response to that bordered on evil.
Andy K Jong Il @ 65:
Maybe the insurance company actuaries took a good look at how large a flood might possibly occur and opted not to risk it.

Truckers get paid less for their loads than the cost of transporting the load. The airlines have financial cancer and will be dead in eighteen months. Container ship costs are heading out-of-sight. Municipalities are going broke. A weekend flood destroyed part of the Midwest corn crop. And, of course, oil prices took a jagged turn upward last Friday en route to their next stop: $150-a-barrel."
Don't know how we are going to get out of this one.
houses more than a mile away had water damage. the ground was saturated and the rain had nowhere to run off, adding to the pooling effect. the cedar river flooding is being called a 500 year event. in wisconsin, lake delton, home of the tommy bartlett water show completely drained when the levy failed. this is in the wisconsin dells area, one of the midwests most populat tourist destination. the people in iowa and wisconsin are working the sandbagging operations and setting up places for people to go. it seems much better organized at local levels than the dissarray we saw in new orleans.
Is there anything on MSM about the flood? I mean, what the Hell! It's 12:25 and the media isn't reporting anything! I'm in PA. and I don't understand this! Jesus, I need a drink!

Andy K Jong Il @ 65:
That's what I would think, too. Higher premiums for those in the plain and lower premiums for those outside. I wonder how many would take it if they are historically outside of a major flood zone.
Sadder than sad.
tr @ 71:
Yeah. But a lot of it is volunteer manpower too. When the news reported that Mercy Hospital was flooding, they had hundreds of volunteers rush down there (though they still had to evacuate the patients). Same thing with the city's last water pump, when that was threatened. The only reason we have the water we do is because everyone flocked there to save it.
And the police and fireman have been out rescuing people in boats for days.
