McCain Fundraiser: "Rape is like the weather"

ABC News:

Sen. John McCain on Friday abruptly cancelled a Monday fundraiser that had been scheduled at the home of a Texas oilman, after ABC News contacted the campaign inquiring about a verbal blunder the Texan made during an unsuccessful 1990 campaign for governor.

Clayton Williams stirred controversy during his 1990 campaign for governor of Texas with a botched attempt at humor in which he compared rape to weather. Within earshot of a reporter, Williams said: “As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it.”

His Democratic opponent at the time, the late Ann Richards -- who, coincidentally, would lose the governor’s mansion to George W. Bush in 1994 -- highlighted the comments in a TV ad during that 1990 campaign. (see above)

McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said the Monday event was being cancelled, given the offensive comments. He said he could not yet say what McCain would do with donations brought into the campaign by Williams.

"These were obviously incredibly offensive remarks that the campaign was unaware of at the time this event was scheduled," Rogers said. He added that Williams apologized for the comments back in 1990, but he said that does not excuse them.

Williams told the Midland Reporter-Telegram recently that he had already raised more than $300,000 for McCain and the fundraiser to be held at his home in Midland. Williams said that he needed to help McCain raise money to stop an Obama campaign that would enact “socialist” policies if elected to office.

Here's an idea, McCain: Why don't you RETURN the money from such a sexist, hateful and ignorant swine? Or is this a new demographic you're hoping to capture? The Back Forty:

A man who has such a disgustingly cavalier attitude towards something as horrific, violating and criminal as the rape of a woman has no place in politics, let alone polite society. This is a man who should be shunned by anyone with a conscience. That includes Senator McCain.

It’s not enough that Senator McCain cancels an event because the media got wind of it.

It’s not enough.

Senator McCain should publicly reject and denounce this man.

He should donate every single dirty dollar that this man has raised for him - all $300,000 - to an organization working to combat rape in our society - like RAINN or RVA.
And he should apologize immediately and completely to his female supporters for daring to entertain the thought of keeping company with this despicable, disgusting individual.

McCain can't take a step without stepping in fecal matter. Doesn't his campaign understand the importance of doing some background checks on anyone even vaguely associated with his campaign? I know they know how to use Google so maybe they could start there.

This SOB who was going to hold the fund raiser should be in jail or something. He's a horrid human being.

Right...........I remember my former husband making a joke about rape once. I couldn't believe he actually thought a rape joke was funny. After a lengthy discussion about it, he got it.

Any rape crisis counselor will tell you, if it wasn't already obvious, that rape is, of course, a crime of violence, and sexuality has nothing to do with it. It would be like making a joke out of someone beating the shit out of your mother, sister, wife, or daughter. You probably wouldn't find that very amusing now, would ya???

Another freakazoid who thinks they're a master of the universe just becasue they have a lot of stolen green paper. Sheesh, grow up, and EVOLVE.

These are the kind of people that need to be sent to Iraq on the front lines. Just tell em it's raining.

The "joke" tells you a lot about the man telling it. If he had told it in a campaign speech he would have been an idiot. So the man isn't an idiot, he's just terribly heartless and possibly an asshole.

OK, look, I'm not going to be a douche and say "it was just a joke" or "lighten up" or any of that hoohah. I'm not the kind of cat to get offended over a joke no matter how bad in taste it is. But that's me, and I can understand people being offended by the comment.

What I would say (because I don't know - heh, maybe I should learn how to use the google) is if Williams has ever expressed remorse for his comment. I mean this was 18 years ago. I was 20 back then, on college radio trying to be all shock jock-y, and I'm sure if I remembered certain things I said or did back then, I'd be remorseful. Did this guy ever apologize? Did he ever try to make things right, with his community, with offended women, with his own karma? Has he repented in his own way & tried to repair the damage he did? Or is he like George Macaca Allen, still shrugging his shoulders saying "What? Wha happa? You pussies need to get a grip."

And finally, IF he's expressed remorse, should he be forgiven?

Look, just by virtue of the fact that a: He's a Republican and b: he's fundraising for McCain, I'm going to go out on a limb and say he probably only sees his faux pas in selfish terms - if people weren't so gosh darn sensitive, he would've won his election and things would be SO much better for him now. In other words, I'm sure he sees his downfall as the fault of others' sensitivity, not his own hubris. But I'm only throwing it out there because if someone winds up sending some a-hole like Drudge a link to an article about how Williams has been donating steadily to womens' charities, and has otherwise tried to make amends, then the liberal blogosphere looks like they jumped the gun on condemning a guy, not being forgiving, ready to demonize everyone associated with McCain, etc. And maybe a lot of liberals DON'T think Williams deserves forgiveness, even if he apologized (again, don't know if he did). But to Christians or neocons looking for another reason to demonize libs, THIS would be grist for that particular mill.

So, here's hoping Williams is still kind of a jerk after all these years.

Part of the problem we have here is that Texas politicians have a reputation for colorful language. Ann Richards was a master (mistress?) of this practice.

One of FDR's vice-presidents was from Texas, and compared his office to a warm bucket of spit.

They ought to build a statue in the Rose Garden of LBJ picking up his houndog by the ears.

Williams and Perot tried to maintain that in a world growing impatient with "folksiness," particularly since they never were just plain folk. It's like a Yankee lawyer in a southern court, trying to imitate Matlock.

The worst of all is that Connecticut Yankee prince georgie.

What I thought was particularly fascinating about this incident was the role the press (ABC News & Washington Post) played in bringing William's remarks to light and, apparently, precipitating McCain's Campaign's decision to cancel the reception.

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/06/13/mccain_cancels_fundr...

..
Both ABC News and The Washington Post contacted the McCain campaign Friday about Williams' past remarks: initially the presumptive GOP nominee's aides questioned whether the story was newsworthy, but by the end of the day they announced the reception was cancelled.
..
The Planned Parenthood Action Fund, which has sharply criticized McCain for his opposition to abortion rights and other family planning programs, first contacted the Post about Williams' remarks. The group's president, Cecile Richards, is the daughter of the late Texas governor.

"It's shocking that John McCain would choose to fundraise with Clayton Williams, who made his political career saying completely inappropriate and disrespectful remarks about women," Richards wrote in an e-mail. "This is a real misstep for the McCain campaign, who is having a hard time getting support from women."

Yes, I am a man. But how is what he said tasteless? The comment doesn't even have anything to with rape, much less the rape of a woman. I'm a big fan of Ann Richards, but this was blown out of proportion then, and it's being blown out of proportion now. Perhaps the guy is a horrible sexist, but his comments are hardly an indication of it.

Hell, if a bad storm were coming my way and there wasn't crap I could do about it, I might say the same thing.

Here's the problem... I grew up in Texas and still have family there (Hi, Mom!) And things change oh so very slowly in Texas. It is still very much the same was it was 18 years ago. And Oilmen don't change. Claytie also helped fund the Karl Rove/GW Bush's smear campaign against Ann Richards making innuendoes about her "playing for the other team."

Yep, some of it is gotcha politics, but McCain is the one who cancelled the fundraiser... now why would he do that, do ya think? Perhaps it is because McCain is trying to woo the women's vote that would have gone to Hillary? Perhaps if these potential women voters found out that McCain was hangin' with a guy who once joked about rape, you think that they would be AS LIKELY to vote for McCain in the fall? I think not.

So -- a post about this IS relevant, no matter what you may think. If the McCain camp didn't think that it was important, don't you think that they would have just gone ahead with the fundraiser?

Joshdavis's picture

I apologize. The post is very poorly written. It doesn't explain the context of his comment. He WAS specifically talking about rape.

But the post above doesn't indicate that. What he said was horrible.

Long Tooth's picture

McCain needs the vote of every woman he can muster to have a prayer in November. Hell, I live in N. California and well remember that remark.

So it boils down to him having honestly not known of the incident (unlikely), in which case the question becomes: where the hell were his campaign managers? Or secondly, he stupidly gambled that no one would recall the incident, and/or make a big deal about it if they did (Bingo!); or finally, he thought the rape crack both inoffensive and humorous, and so dismissed any warning that many women did not (again, Bingo!).

Whatever the explanation, he ends up looking like an incompetent clown (and undoubtedly, a very pissed-off one, too). I'm really looking forward to this campain.

LibertyLover's picture

Not only did this vile excuse for a human being (Williams) joke about rape in this fashion, he also ...."waxed nostalgically about getting "serviced" in whorehouses --- but he didn't believe that prostitutes or any other woman had a right to a legal abortion. He also refused to shake Ann Richard's hand in public. Women accounted for 53% of the vote that year -- including 22 % that considered themselves Republican..." paraphrased from Laura Flanders' book: "Bushwomen"

So the fact that McCain wants to distance himself from this scum is very telling indeed. But he should return the money as well.

mcsame plays the role of the gentle caring and loving old man who would govern our country with compassion and sage wisdom. I think it's well known that he has a temper. He has not been pressed yet to allow it to show through. But the time will come prior to the election. Now we have to see how his people will spin it or how the media will report on it. Middle America is ready in every sense to embrace him. Once they see the temper, i can imagine them stating something along the lines as that being exactly the kind of temperament that's needed to deal with them thar terrists. Watch for it, it's coming. He is no gentle compassionate thinking old man any more than bush was the yokel he appeared to be. McSame has a role to play and he needs to stay within the role. Bush played it to the hilt. This will be mcSame's only chance in this election. He needs to stay within the role.

When he elects to accept money from people who utter and believe statements such as these, he does so by design. Someone suggested that he give the money back to show that he does not need the support of narrow minded backwards thinking people such as these. What are those chances. none. why should he, the repubs and conservatives have been skating on a lot worse with total impunity. Until they are served notice of a new law, one that preceeded the current administration, that is now in effect. They will continue to push the envelope.

Please stop giving the other side something to make us look like asses - by making us look like asses. It's stupid enough that he has to go through this at all. Stop being hypocritical. We used to leave that to the Republicans. Remember Obama having to leave his church? Yeah, just as stupid. And, no, he shouldn’t have to do anything one way or the other with the money. Again, stop being hypocritical. Imagine if someone came to your door, “Hey, would you like to support Obama with $50 or even $20?” “Sure” you respond, “In fact, take $100. I really want to support him and his ideals that I agree with.” Now, imagine that weeks, even months later, you find out that the person in charge of that particular group of people who took your money, turned out to be an ex-con. Let’s make him really bad say he’s a rapist. Yes, Obama should condemn this. He should make sure he’s fired and cut all ties with him. But, should he get rid of all of the money that he “gave” to the campaign? No! Absolutely not. The con didn’t give his personal money. He directed a group of people to canvass and collect money from DONORS. From YOU. Part of that money is YOURS. Now, wouldn’t you feel disenfranchised? I sure as hell would. I gave that money – my money – for a certain cause and that’s where I want my money going. So, please people. There are plenty of REAL issues to attack McCain on. Use them. What’s next? What his hairstylist did in 1982? Get real.

Ben,

The GOopers are making themselves look like asses, and nobody is an ass who points out their sickening and inhumane members. The money they raise by using rape as a joke is blood money, pure and simple.

Why would any woman (or man) in their right mind vote for a man who associates with people who think rape is funny? I mean, what's funny about forcing someone to let you violate their body without their permission? Is it funny when they scream for help? Is it a great joke to some that people don't want their bodies violated by boors? that a person has a right to permit or not permit sex with someone? Why can't Rethugs see this? Why do they continue to associate with rapists and call "friend" those who would rape little girls in the name of god? Do GOPers sit around the country club joking about rape and NOT get how painful it is for those who have suffered it? Is it one of those things they think is cool to joke about, like dragging black men to death on a highway? Har. Har. Har.

I don't get it. Neither does McCain, apparently. This is why nobody who is sane would even think of voting for this pig. He lost my respect when I read about how he treated both his wives; how he participated in savings and loans disasters that stripped innocent people of their money. He's not worth it. If there can be anybody worse than Bush, it would be McCain.

Honestly.

The Lone Ranger's Creed

"I believe that to have a friend,
a man must be one.

That all men are created equal
and that everyone has within himself
the power to make this a better world.

That God put the firewood there
but that every man
must gather and light it himself.

In being prepared
physically, mentally, and morally
to fight when necessary
for that which is right.

That a man should make the most
of what equipment he has.

That 'This government,

and for the people'
shall live always.

That men should live by
the rule of what is best
for the greatest number.

That sooner or later...
somewhere...somehow...
we must settle with the world
and make payment for what we have taken.

That all things change but truth,
and that truth alone, lives on forever.

In my Creator, my country, my fellow man."

PS... despite what some misinformed person has posted here, the Clayton Williams case was not simply a matter of "some old guy making a joke that some reporter overheard". Clayton was speaking to a group of reporters and ranch arounds the camp fire at his ranch. Because they were all male, Claytie was convinced that they would all think it was funny and keep it to themselves. This is the sociopath who refused to even shake the hand of his opponent, Ann Richards, during the campaign. The guy who went on TV in Texas during the campaign bragging that he would introduce small-time juvenile drug offenders to "the joy of bustin' rocks". On a hunting trip, he and his cronies once berated my uncle for not pulling the trigger on a buck that in my uncle's rifle sites (my uncle was legally blind). My uncle yelled back that he could not see the object clearly enough in his sites to identify it, and he would not pull the trigger on something he could not identify. They berated him anyway. Classy bunch of folks.

I've lived in Texas nearly my entire life and remember the Williams vs (Ann) Richardson race well. Williams, a rich Texas multimillionaire in the telecom business (one of the first company to offer Long Distance phone service to following the breakup of AT&T), Williams was a gaff machine, with a string of "questionable comments" leaking out during the campaign, but in such a heavily Red state, his lead stayed strong...

Until THIS particular gaff just days before the election. Women bolted en masses and helped Ann Richardson to a narrow win.

It's almost vomit inducing thinking back just how utterly vile the man had to sink before enough voters finally said "enough in enough!" And even then, Richardson only barely won, and was out in the next election when they ran Monkey Boy against her, who wanted revenge for that "Silver Spoon" comment.

I'm offended that people are offended by a joke from 18 years ago. Stop the faux outrage. I make more offensive jokes than this on a weekly basis. Seriously, non-story.

It's easy to dismiss this story when you didn't live it. The man is truly offensive. A bigot (made "N-word" jokes), and misogynist, made AIDS jokes, etc and so on, and STILL was the darling of the Republican Party.

Now, 18 years later, the GOP is fund-raising from his home. Apparently, they didn't weren't too terribly offended either.

And, aside from everything that smells rotten about this, how about how
unseemly" is this, to have a scummy, multimillonaire BIG OIL MAN fundraising
and donating for you?
Think that Claytie might have a reason? And quite possibly want
somthing in return later? Things like this need to be exposed, and highlited
hard, and often. SHEESH!!!!!

Then methinks you ought to rethink your offensive jokes... your friends and colleagues aren't laughing with you, they are politely laughing at you.

And if it is NO Big Deal, then why did McCain Pull the fundraiser?

dosido's picture

Isn't it an interesting pattern that McCain is oh so very happy to take money behind closed doors?

But once there is a controversy he runs like a gazelle!

I worked for Clayton Williams from for two years in the late 1970's. By the time he began his run for Governor, I had moved to Utah.

Anyway, when I found out he was running, I moved back to Texas just to vote against him.

What is incredible is the McCain camp apparently knew nothing of his "rape/weather" statement.

Clayton had been far ahead of Ann in the polls, and was already picking out drapes for the office. But then he made his comment, and compounded it by refusing to shake Ann's hand at a televised debate.

These two events should be in every politicians guide book of "things not to do" and committed to memory.

Amazing

rif's picture

I have no doubt McCain keeps disgusting company, but I bet this guy was comparing weather to rape, not "rape to weather," as the post has it.

Yeah rape's almost as funny as genocide, which is a real knee-slapper.

You'd probably find rape even funnier if it happened to you, don't you think so?

48 KEITH THOMPSON Says: Tex Antoine, a long-time weatherman in NYC, was fired from his job for saying the same thing long before 1990. He was never heard from again.

I'm late getting here, I know, but I wanted to add that in the Summer of 1980, when I was living in San Francisco, this same incident happened on TV.

I was making dinner and watching one of the local newscasts. An announcer gave a brief story about a local rape case and then, affecting a bad Chinese accent said: "As Confucius say, when rape is inevitable, lie back and enjoy it." I didn't believe what I had heard; it was just too "OUT THERE" to comprehend - so I "let it go".

About a week later, I saw a tiny new-item in the SF Chronicle (?) about the incident. It was your basic, 1-column-inch notice saying that the guy had been fired.

That was that.

This is a non-story, the same as Obama's association with Rev. Wright. I fail to see why presidential hopefuls should be taken to task for the comments that a supporter made nearly two decades ago. Since you were really so incensed by the Rev. Wright coverage (I'm a long time reader) you should hold the media to the same standard for McCain. Granted, Wright never said anything as patently offensive as this, but I still think this is non-issue.

I know this thread is a day old now, but dig this:

Clayton Williams was born in 1931.....SO, when he made this comment, HE WAS 59 years old!!

Kinda puts a whole new light on it. A 59 year old man made this gross comment, it's not like he was 18........there is no hope for a 59 year old man who, in a public setting, let's loose with a RAPE "Joke."

Wonder if he had any granddaughters back then, daughters, a wife, a mother?????

A man who has such a disgustingly cavalier attitude towards something as horrific, violating and criminal as the rape of a woman has no place in politics, let alone polite society. This is a man who should be shunned by anyone with a conscience. That includes Senator McCain.

Agreed.

Now, what to do about a man who calls his own wife the C* word and says that she paints her face like a trollop?

I keep wondering what Cindy McCrazy will do after Crash loses in November.I wouldn't doubt that she shit cans this asshole because she's only holding on under the assumpion that McBush wins and she'll be first lady. See ya Johnny boy.Looks like you'll be back down to one house after November!Ha Ha

Clayton Moore may've not been a real Texan, nor the writer of this creed, but both represented Texas well.

The Lone Ranger's Creed

"I believe that to have a friend,
a man must be one.

That all men are created equal
and that everyone has within himself
the power to make this a better world.

That God put the firewood there
but that every man
must gather and light it himself.

In being prepared
physically, mentally, and morally
to fight when necessary
for that which is right.

That a man should make the most
of what equipment he has.

That 'This government,
of the people, by the people
and for the people'
shall live always.

That men should live by
the rule of what is best
for the greatest number.

That sooner or later...
somewhere...somehow...
we must settle with the world
and make payment for what we have taken.

That all things change but truth,
and that truth alone, lives on forever.

In my Creator, my country, my fellow man."

The Lone Ranger

It says a lot when you have to use fictional characters as examples to hold up to the rest of society.

That tells us just how messed up your state is.

By the way... just how many Mexicans did you guys kill? How much land did you steal from them?

History doesn't disappear.

You have to wonder if they were scared of him. He's not the kind of person who should have been trusted around anything female.

How many Indians did your state kill, or if on the West Coast how many Asians and people of color did your state kill working on the railroads and unsafe mines, or if the East Coast, how many immigrants did you put in lethal over-crowded tenements, working people to death in 14 hours a day shifts in the local unsafe factory?

I was holding this up as an example to all.

Didn't that idiot Bob Knight say the same thing?

These people know no shame.

Jackass.

I was an 11 year old when Clayton Williams ran for governor of Texas and I can still recite word for word what he said about rape. I remember discussing with my SIXTH GRADE FRIENDS in Dallas, Texas how revolting that statement was. It absolutely sunk his campaign, and he's been lurking in the political abyss ever since. No one has wanted to touch the guy since he lost the race, and all of a sudden the McCain campaign digs this guy up? Unbelieveable. I never thought I'd see Williams' name in the press again. It's a truly pathetic commentary on the McCain campaign...that is why this is newsworthy. And also, it's a big fat lie that they weren't aware of his infamous comment. To say that it was just a joke that he made 18 years ago really shows some of the commentors' historical ignorance.

Graham Shevlin's picture

Reading this reminds me of the old saying "if you lie down with a dog, you will get up with fleas". I have no idea why John McCain thought it was a good idea to accept a fund-raiser from a misogynist old Texas moonbat, but this is a severe lapse of judgement. The guy is a shameless relic of the days when women were to be found either in the kitchen or the bedroom. He should have been left there.
