Talking Heads--Life During Wartime from Stop Making Sense
Happy Fathers' Day to all the daddies out there!
I think it's safe to say that a large percentage of airtime will be devoted to the memory of Tim Russert. In fact, the whole of Meet the Press will be a tribute to Russert. However, there's still lots of potential for political hackery and media narratives. Look at Face the Nation: that's a whole world of crazy with Jindal the Exorcist and the always partisan Newt Gingrich. And John "Cry-Baby" Boehner will be on Late Edition, will he still be insisting that the Chinese are drilling for oil off of Cuba?
ABC's "This Week" - Former Sens. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., and John Edwards, D-N.C.
CBS' "Face the Nation" - Gov. Bobby Jindal, R-La.; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
NBC's "Meet the Press" - Tribute to late host Tim Russert.
CNN's "Late Edition" - Reps. John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Chris Van Hollen, D-Md.; Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa.; Gov. Janet Napolitano, D-Ariz.; Douglas Holtz-Eakin, McCain economic adviser, and Dan Tarullo, Obama economic adviser; Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.
"Fox News Sunday" - Sens. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., and Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas; American Petroleum Institute President and CEO Red Cavaney; Earth Day Network President Kathleen Rogers.
"The Chris Matthews Show" - Panel: Katty Kay, Jim Cramer, Kathleen Parker and Andrew Sullivan. Topic Questions: Can McCain escape the Bush economy by pushing tax cuts? Does the "tough guy" image of a president still sell with voters?
What's catching your eye this morning?

Good Morning and Happy Father's Day!
I can't imagine what they could say on MTP that hasn't already been said this last day and a half.
Looks to me to be a good Sunday to skip all the shows and do something fun.
We have no kids and both our fathers are deceased, so Father's Day here is just another day. Having said that, Happy Father's Day to all you dads who visit C&L. Be good to yourselves today!
FYI, Matt Stoller (the blogger) is on Washington Journal (c-span) right now.
Will Tucker Carlson be the new host of Meet the Press?
Thanks for this video. I was in the audience at the Wiltern in LA when this was filmed.
We were on the wooden balcony of the place (basically an old playhouse). It was not designed by its architects to hold a few hundred enthusiastic 'Heads fans I've been through many earthquakes in my years, but I never feared structural collapse more than during the playing of Burning Down the House and Life During Wartime that night! But we kept on dancing...
Catching my eye today are my two angel/monsters, who woke me by jumping on and tickling me this beautiful father's day.
I wish all the dads well today, as well as the families that put up with us.
I bet Chris Matthews is praying for the host spot on MTP. With an ego like his, he just has to be hoping for that spot. I don't think it's gonna happen. I don't know if Chuck Todd is ready or not, but from what I have heard this past couple of days, it seems like Tim was grooming Chuck for something.
from huffington post.
Oi veh-- Fred Thompson's getting trotted out today. Must be an attempt to make McCane look young...
I'm flying to Tennessee for work today (under protest). Maybe if I say something not-so-kind about their senior senator, they'll send me home early?
Does the “tough guy” image of a president still sell with voters?
You betcha. A true American hero--the kind who barely graduates from Annapolis, crashes a bunch of planes, sells his Senate vote to a group of crooked bankers who the taxpayers end up bailing out, dumps his first wife, calls his second wife a c--t, and abandons just about every position he's ever taken to suck up to the least popular and least competent President in a century. I'll take two!
pissed off patricia @ 6:
I hope they take a moratorium on that show and then consider KO.
[I know! Won't happen.]
fastfeat @ 8:
Use innuendo! It'll go over their heads, explode later like a grenade and keep you laughing for hours. The time will go quickly'
I don't think a moratorium on MTP is in order -- it's the longest running television show in the world, doesn't seem like it would be right to stop it now.
I'm sure Matthews would love the job, but I think Chuck Todd would be a better choice. KO is fantastic but I think he should stay where he is, where we get his unfiltered opinion five days a week.
C&L - You need to add CNN's GPS at 1PM to these Sunday lineups. Today Fareed Zakharias has O'Hanlon and Pollack from the Brookings institute against Michael Ware and NYT's Dexter Filkins. I'm betting that will be more interesting than Rep and Dem talking points.
pissed off patricia @ 1:
Always love your posts here on C&L and always go to your blog every morning with a cup of coffee. Going to take your advice and skip all the bad news from the talking heads today, and me and the little redhead are getting on the harley and put some wind in our hair. Happy Fathers Day to everyone.
Vernon Twinburger @ 5:
Nice!
I received a hand-drawn picture and a letter from my 8-year old that reduced me to tears. Ain't love grand?
As for what's got my eye...Celtics/Lakers baby. Here's hoping Doc Rivers can give his dad the ultimate memorial.
CoIntelPro for Pronktastic Democratic Party Victory @ 10:
Brokaw is hosting today, for the tribute.
I suspect whoever they are eying for the Washington chief job will probably be who takes the MTP helm. I don't think Tweety is in the running for Washington chief. heh
CoIntelPro for Pronktastic Democratic Party Victory @ 11:
Good idea, though I really prefer laughing with people than at them.
Actually going to UT, Knoxville, so I should be amongst Tennessee's "breast and brightest." I sure hope they haven't eliminated Summer courses there...
HDon @ 3:
Tucker Carlson would be in over his head doing a 4 AM farm report on a rural Alabama 1000W radio station.
Like him or hate him, I feel nothing but sympathy for the Russert family. Having said that, he was supposed to be a journalist. Why are journalists newsworthy? THAT is exactly what is wrong with the supposed MSM. They all view themselves as celebrities. They aren't supposed to be celebs. They are supposed to be news informers. Name two supposed MSM "journalists" that haven't written books. In the books, most are autobiographical in nature. It's all "me, me, me, me"......all they see is themselves. What can I say today that will make me famous. Sad.
Not a chance Chris Matthews will get MTP. The point was made repeatedly during the past day and a half that Russert's strength was listening to people. Veiled reference to Matthews lack of ability in that regard. Notice that KO handled the event, not Matthews. Telling. KO is going to be given a guest shot at MTP to see how he handles it.
Nicole
I want to thank you for your weekly Talking Heads thread. I go through it to see if there's anybody I want to hear pontificate, and it saves a lot of bother trying to find the people and topics in my local listings. Your efforts are appreciated!
hareli @ 20:
I can't imagine the suits at GE would stand for Olbermann. My original guess was David Gregory, but the Chuck Todd scenario makes sense. Either one would continue the Timmeh tradition of obeisance to the GOP. Olbermann wouldn't.
ABC-CBS-NBC-CNN-FOX Five great reasons to not to turn on the Tele Screen.
About the only thing Television is good for anymore is weather.
HDon @ 3:
OMG, I need to bleach my brain just for THINKING that.
GAG, ACK, BARF! (she says in her best Bill the Cat, uhm, voice?)
I couldn't imagine having to even read through any drivel that douche has to say.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=vmj6JADOZ-8
CoIntelPro for Pronktastic Democratic Party Victory @ 10:
Olbermann would definitely be my choice. Smart. Fair. Decent.
Nah, never gonna happen.
yellow dog @ 18:
Amen, Bruddah (sistah?)!!
hareli @ 20:
Shame he didn't ask more hard hitting questions and keep pressing until he got a response and not a non-answer.
On "This Week" Fred Thompson, arguing against the recent SCOTUS decision, just said that the current legal system for the detainees is the most liberal we've ever had (pauses then says) for enemy combatants.
Didn't Bush INVENT the concept of enemy combatants? how fulla crap can you be? lol
Filthy Harry @ 28:
Well, he should know. After all, he was a District Attorney, wasn't he? (Or he played on on TeeVee, or something.)
Happy Father's Day, all you Dads. And now, a Father's Day message from President George W. Bush, who reminds us that fatherhood is all about terrorism.
I'll be catching the summaries only in order to spare myself any further Russert-mania.
What a shitty lineup. Yawn to each one of those shows listed. But someone quoted a CNN show (GPS??) that sounded interesting - Michael Ware usually is informative.
One Year Wonder @ 32:
Yeah, it's Fareed Zakaria's new show. I haven't had a chance to see it yet, I think it just started last week, but I like him.
As per my daughters instructions, I will not do politics today,I will have a double cheeseburger and not shave. As for jumping on my bed, waking me up by tickling me ......(choke) ...I love my memories.
#1, this is a chance for NBC to change MTP BACK to the original "panel" of reporters asking the question instead of an interview show. This has been one of MTP's biggest drawbacks - if Russert didn't ask it, it didn't get asked - and he DIDN'T ask so many, many things. Write NBC and tell them to GET REAL.
#2, what is grabbing my eye is No Kucinich, no Wexler, not a damn thing about the impeachment filing. I know it was never going to get anywhere but it's the reporters who are supposed to be dogging the Democratic leadership to find out why they are protecting the most obviously criminal administration we've ever had. The national shame of lack of accountability by Congress and The Press continues - could THAT be Russert's true legacy?
CoIntelPro for Pronktastic Democratic Party Victory @ 10:
The host of Meet the Press needs to be non partisan.
Chuck Todd would be awesome.
John Boner drilling for oil? Yeah Baby!
Jindal saying today that a vote for either one of the candidates isn't a vote against the other! Can you say delusional?
I say " WHAT??? DID I JUST HEAR THAT WRONG? WHAT THE H*LL DID HE JUST SAY? IS THAT MORE CODE TALK?"
And I think the man is either on speed or busy selling himself to be VP like a car salesman. Geez
McLovin' the vid...
David Byrne is one of the most underappreciated artists out there...
As for the Timmeh spot, I think that NBC will put MTP asleep for a while but will probably put that turncoat David Gregory in the slot.
Most anchor-reporters are shills now, anyhow. Even KO sometimes reads the DNC planks a 'lil' too robotically.
Happy Father's Day, Guys! Don't follow your weak or abusive dads, but G-d as your great example. Quote from Dr. James Kennedy this morning on NBC network.
HEads, Great party music. Half expect to hear the B52's next.
Couple of years ago I had sent an email to Tim Russert requesting him to bring in Arianna as his partner since I thought that Arianna from Huffingtonpost had the tactics of a lionness to go after the politicians.
I am sure Tim might have laughed or was threatened by my request. I did miss Tim's program this morning!
I hope MSNBC would appoint Arianna Huffington as the host of Meet the Press.
Arianna would be entertaining and will bring back Tim to the table.
Is anybody wondering where Chris Matthews is? He has been nowhere to be seen since Russert died. His show wasn't on here today, either. I really think there is something going on here as it seems out of character for him to miss a chance to opine about the situation. He must have been closer to Tim than any of us realized.
On the passing of Tim Russert: Today's MTP was a fine tribute show, but the repeated labeling of him as a "man of faith" closely and very consciously intertwined with and connected to the praise of his laudable characteristics is a putdown of atheists and agnostics everywhere. There are myriad reasons to praise Tim Russert and yes, he was a "man of faith" and that should be mentioned. But was he a good interviewer / analyst and a good human being *because* of his religion? He could not have deeply loved his father and his son, he could not have loved politics, and he could not have been a hard working and talented interviewer without religion? He could not have cared about and loved his fellow man had he not been religious? And of his "working class background" - please, spare us! Don't 99.8% of all Americans -- everyone not born to corporate bond coupon-clipping patricians, come from a "working class background"? Is it remarkable that an American man was able to accomplish greatness, even though he wasn't born into the upper class, or at least born to white collar college grad? This is a new concept in America? We do mourn the passing of Tim Russert and honor his work, his life and all of his admirable characteristics, but please, please STOP WITH THE FALSE MEMES!
I watched the first half of the GPS show while on the treadmill and it was kinda the usual teevee spiel. Zakaria doesn't have the time in 30 min to qualify or confirm any of the crap coming out of hanlon or pollack, its kinda hard to question ware when you watch some of his videos of the birth of the insurgency. as usual ware comes with the 'this is the situation, it is X. now what?' and hanlon and pollack just sputter friedman units.
goign to cnn's site and watching the previous week's gps show, there's a priceless moment when christiane amanpour looks at doug feith and says 'well the worlds kinda wanting a change from feith and friends' and everyone laughs at feith, who gets that pissed of look in his eye like 'i should be taken seriously! im effing smurt!' Well, he needs some kinda gig after the hoyas canned him. Can perfectly understand why Franks hated his guts after hearing him talk for 10 seconds.
Mclaughlin group ( hackers are us) says that between Mccrazy's tax plan and Obama's Mccrazy's is better WTF giving corporations even more tax loopholes and breaks will help with salaries?? for whom give me a break you punch of tools I see how giving the wealthy even more money will be good for the country if that is the case maybe this symulus package is giving money to the wrong crowd the wealthy could use a few more million that would dropkick the economy into high gear.
Also, they went after obama about his VP group oh come on if you wanted to talk about problems and missteps it'd take a full week of these show to go after Mccrazy and finally the gitmo ruling of course the right said it was bad really bad what a whole panel of tools
Bynrdskynrd @ 39:
I didn't like him much, until I worked on this film. It was a two day shoot (two concerts).
Neither was all that hot, so we added a third day, and that performance was just stunning.
It's not often any band locks up that well.....
Host: "Do you like the Talking Heads?"
Mark E. Smith: "No, to me they're the enemy. That's why the Fall started."
