Hunt Is On For 870 Escapees From Afghan Prison

MSNBC: (h/t BillW)

U.S. and NATO troops aided Afghan forces with reconnaissance in a hunt Saturday for 870 inmates who escaped prison after a sophisticated Taliban assault that even NATO conceded was a success for the militants.

A roadside bomb, meanwhile, killed four U.S. Marines sent to southwestern Afghanistan to help train the country's fledgling police. The deadliest attack on American forces this year came one day after the U.S. defense secretary highlighted the fact that more American and allied troops were killed in Afghanistan than in Iraq last month.

Afghanistan's deputy interior minister, Munid Mangal, said about 1,000 prisoners were housed in Kandahar's Sarposa Prison when dozens of militants on motorbikes attacked the facility late Friday. Seven police and several prisoners died in the assault, he said.

Al Jazeera's numbers are significantly higher, claiming 1,100 prisoners escaped. Of those, 15 have been killed.

trillions upon trillions of defense spending and 14 guys on yamahas spring 1000 "enemies" of the USA!!!!

surprised?

almost as crazy as people hijacking jets on our own soil and NORAD could only shoot down one of them!!!

surorised?

1,100 people escape from a military prison and it was a surprise to everyone? Better look to see who the Taliban has on the payroll inside.

Considering the kind of questionable "criminal masterminds" like children, farmers and villagers in Guantanamo, I wonder just how badly these people deserved to be in a military prison in the first place.

Oh , that's interesting ! 870 Taliban members escape and the US Military spokesperson says, "Ah, no problem. This doesn't really change things much."
BUT if the US releases 30 or 40 Guatanamo prisoners -- an entire U.S. city will explode.

So violence is down in Iraq, but up in Afghanistan. How are these two things related?

I would say the lynch pin here is the shifting focus of attention of our wonderful friends and allies from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I've added a few comments on this in my latest "update" here:

http://www.asecondlookatthesaudis.com

So long as we refuse to even acknowledge where all this crap keeps coming from, we will not make an inch of progress in the War on Terror. It's becoming like a pathetic, geo-political version of whack-a-mole.

Isn't it odd that since Bush and Cheney have been traveling around the country to speak, we have outbursts from the "Taliban" right before elections similar to the last election for President.

ya know, an integrated missile defense system would have stopped this....

and, consulting the wayback machine:

The United States on Tuesday formally announced that the Taliban has been completely defeated and can no longer control any territory in Afghanistan.

"I hereby determine as of this date that the Taliban controls no territory within Afghanistan and modify the description of the term 'territory of Afghanistan controlled by the Taliban' to reflect that the Taliban controls no territory within Afghanistan, " U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said in a statement published in the Federal Register.

i guess they forgot to tell the taliban?

excellent!!!
lol!!!

Speaking of Afghan prisons, I had written to Crooks and Liars, imploring them to focus on the coverage that McClatchy has given to the atrocities that have occurred at the Bagram and Kandahar internment camps in Afghanistan. As this link indicates, a majority of prisoners in these camps have experienced torture at the hands of American soldiers. American soldiers would focus inflicting pain on the prisoners at an area by their knees, realizing that that area can cause much pain and suffering for the individual. McClatchy reporters also reported how the American military tried to claim that no abuses had occurred at Bagram and at Kandahar. Another story focuses upon an American soldier who participated in the torture of a prisoner at one of the camps. This is a story that should be widely covered by the MSM and the liberal blogs.

Support American troops? Not hardly. One should not be surprised at the response that the average Iraqi and Afghani would give at that ludicrous question,

870 fighters are probably now booking flights to the United States so that we can fight them here instead of over there. They are going to take on over 300 million cowering Americans, so we better put Grampa in office to protect us.

Up to $4 trillion spent...for this.

Far more implausible things have happened in history (I'm looking at you, Napoleon Bonaparte.)

The Taliban in Afghanistan is the GOP's proudest creation, so is it really a surprise that some of them got a little preferential treatment ?

Why bother with the trip? The army's over there.

I'd love to see one of these fuckers try something in a poor black neighborhood.

Watch the bullets fly and the numbskulls die.

Hell, not just a poor black neighborhood, your average kid on a reservation could kick the crap out of the Qaeda idiots with one hand tied to one foot behind his back. Why the Hell are we scared of them?

It's a damn good thing that W "gave up" golf...

How does that make this different from most wars? Red Army prowess and US industry won WWII. Our generals were worse usually than the Italians.

That's what I was thinking.

Taking bets on how this indicates that the administration's strategy is succeeding.

"Freedom has truly taken root in Afghanistan, where once prison meant a lifetime of abuse from which no escape was possible. One of the greatest ideals of the Bush administration has always been to spread freedom and democracy around the world. Today's happy news proudly trumpets just how closely Afghani people have taken President Bush's closest ideals to heart."

thanks for sharing that article and mccain thinks there will be no casualties if we stay in iraq..all that chatter about saddam and his torturing ways....wow

I hope my fellow Americans will wake up and realize that all this bad news is very much welcomed by the GOP who does NOT want to do anything but tell us that there is a GWOT. The war needs to exist so they can claim their special wartime powers to screw the rest of us.

Tell me again why we are in Iraq and not in Afghanistan?

Cheney is crazy like a fox.

Hannah @ 3:

Good luck convincing people of that. I'm half-expecting to hear "I have a list of 200 people who have Islamist ties and they are all working in the Democrat party," come out of some Token Brown PersonTM from the GOP. It's that insane.

You're probably right in a lot of ways, but the average American probably only knows They shoot at Us, We shoot at Them.

If they weren't enemies when they were put in that prison, they probably are now.

I'm just going to go to sleep until January. Someone remember to wake me when it's all freaking over, OK?

Very Interesting

The Supreme Court makes a statement on GITMO
The Election is coming
Malikai say Iraq may ask the US to leave
The ELection is coming
Bush says he is not realy a "War " president
The Election is coming
Bush says he is going after Bin Laden
The Election is coming
Karzai says he may send the Afghan Army into Pakistan but looks very nervous.

So someone springs 1100 Taliban

Karzai knew something was coming.

If 20 Taliban escaped OK that could happen.

Someone paid off "ALL" of the prison guards

Read the book "The Great Game " which is a history of Britain's
exploits in this area in the 19th century.

Welcome to Afghanistan.

Quick

Do we have 70 virgins each

To bait them with?

Waddya mean we don't,

They're on backorder?

pissed off patricia@23

and that is the tale of the tape for this so-called "war" on terror.

our entire policy, in regards to fighting the terror tactics, has made things worse.

our 'leaders' either don't care, are too dumb to understand, or are doing this on purpose.

marko @ 1:

Nope. Not when the jail has mud walls.

Of course, in our defense, it should be pointed out we have obviously pissed away
out entire concrete budget on the Zionist-inspired partitioning of Iraqi cities.

that's the plan keep the military industrial complex working and spending

Just more evidence these rodeo clowns took their eyes off the ball, changed the mission on they guys who wanted to dish out a little payback for 9-11. Grandpa McCranky whines about "sovereignty" in Pakistan when Obama suggests stepping up efforts of going after them where they live. Who has the real juebos?

This gives new meaning to the phrase, "The terrorists are on the run".

It should be pointed out while McCain's proposals are themselves loathsome, Obama wishes to shift the main focus from Iraq to sending more troops to Afghanistan. It is extremely doubtful that when the U.S. continues to tortures prisoners in places like Bagram and Kandihar, as well as bombing Afghan villages and homes, that that policy by Obama will do anything to win the hearts and minds of the Afghani people as well as those who populate the rest of the Muslim world.

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/story/38775.html

This will certainly help Rudy Giuliani.

By the way.

Early last week Karzai said that Afghanistan needed 10's of billions dollars in aid to stabalize the country. He also said government corruption would be cleaned up..

I guess the money did not show up.

i think you make a good point i wonder had we gone into parts of pakistan/afghan earlier would it be different some hindsight of course....looks like musharraf(sp) is done

Hope the Afghanis have enough mud to repair the prison.

i agree the people seeking hope and would rather negotiate for resources/policies vs. being strong armed will previal.....the war hawks NEOCONS are going to leave it as messy as possible though......this has been in the making for some time

Please write your Representatives that our troops in Afghanistan need more support. A soldier sent to Afghanistan is 6 times more likely to get killed than one sent to Iraq. They are understaffed and under equipped. Have our government either pony up more or get out now!

"You never can tell." I do not see how ordering more U.S. forces into Afghanistan, which is what Obama is proposing, will give the Afghanis any "hope." On the contrary, it tells Afghans that more Afghan villages and houses will be obliterated by American bombs. Would it give you "hope" if foreign soldiers were to appear in your hometown and to see foreign jets taking off ready to bomb and strafe American homes and towns? I suspect that your answer to that question would be the same as the Afghanis and that would be a resounding NO. The last thing that Afghans need to see happen is for more Afghani families to be torn asunder by American aggression and American imperialism. Yet Obama seems to have a great deal of difficulty recognizing this obvious truth.

Yeah, like mass prison breaks have never happened before in history.

Sorry, but you can have things like that happen, particularly in a hostile area (especially when the hostility is our own damn fault) and even the bastards that were there before probably look better than the new Brave White OverlordsTM. For instance, people never would have expected Xenophon to fight his way to the sea-bad example, considering the way things appear to be going with the Prez and the Iranian real-life trolls.

If these prisoners are anything like WMD, bushco will never find them

I'm thinking the reason Afghanistan got away from us and wasn't a sustained success was because Bush didn't stage a helicopter landing in Kabul and have Halliburton print up another 'Mission Accomplished' banner...

You see that plain over there

And that one palm tree?

They're all hiding behind it.

Y'all remember when the only person we were trying to find

Was Waldo?

Based on all of the responses written above, didn't we all think all of these things and more? Isn't this just par for the course?
