You know, that story about the U.S. prison holding the wrong men really reminds me of the movie Good Morning Vietnam where Robin Williams was joking about U.S. intelligence officials having problems finding any Vietnamese named Charlie. I wonder how many of those men they are holding actually call themselves a "terrorist"?

Agreed.

Bush dines with Rupert Murdoch.

Surprised?

so did billary. they are probably discussing the mclellan revelations.

That post at "Seeing the Forest" is exactly right. Of course if bush had gotten Osama from the beginning, he wouldn't have had reason to conduct his "War on Terror" right into Iraq. He wouldn't have been able to use his extra special powers that a war gives him. Before 9-11 bush's approval polls were going rapidly down. Having Osama out there is the only thing that gave him the power he has gotten and the short term approval he has gotten to enjoy.

I'm not sure if Osama were caught today if that would improve bush's legacy that much or even help McCain. If the spooky boogie man is no longer running loose, there goes McCain's claim to fame of protecting the country from the spooky boogie man.

It's not that big of a deal....shouldn't a president meet with all of his employees and media staff from time-to-time?

Agreed.

But I think there are 6-13 affiliated prisoners. nothing remotely terrorist has actually been proven. no substantive charges have actually been levied.

you might have that backward. bush is getting talking point instruction. there's nothing he can offer murdoch.

In that clip on c-span this morning bush mentioned meeting with the British historians the night before at the dinner. He told Brown he enjoyed the meeting and he had read many of the historians' books.

I'm betting he fudged about reading many of their books. Of course, I'm just guessing here.

It blows my mind that Republicans still think that the party of George Bush is tougher against terrorism than any other. Hello people!? This isn't 1980!!!

I would also add that even if Bush were serious about going after Bin Laden I doubt there is enough U.S. military ground forces left to sustain such a campaign. We are talking about a rugged mountainous area occupied by hostile tribes on the Afghan/Pakistan border.  Karzai stated that he would send the Afghan military across the border into Pakistan if he needed to but even that is a laugh.  Most of the Afghan forces are made up of northern alliance or former Taliban troops and would just as likely turn against Karzai as they would fight for him.

Not to mention the fact that the Bin Laden trail is extremely cold now.  Heck, for all we know Bin Laden is laid up in some town far away from the area where they think he is at.

Charges may come against ex-Bear Stearns execs: report
Mon Jun 16, 2008 8:10am EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. prosecutors are preparing to file criminal charges against managers of two Bear Stearns hedge funds whose collapse helped kick off the credit crisis last year, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

The U.S. Attorney's office in Brooklyn, New York will conclude interviews this week and has indicated to lawyers that indictments may follow, the newspaper said, citing people familiar with the case.

Former bond portfolio managers Ralph Cioffi and Matthew Tannin could be charged with securities fraud within the next week, according to one of people familiar with the matter.

Bin Laden is comfortably ensconced in Saudi Arabia, at home with family and friends. He has never been a target and we know it.

G-Dub has FINALLY decided to go after Bin Laden, but it’s all about his pathetic “legacy.”

Indeed it is. It's all part of his propaganda to keep bin Laden and 911 associated in the minds of Americans. But the crime that bin Laden is known to be associated with is the October 2000 USS Cole bombing, not 911. Bush should be required to capture bin Laden and bring him to trial in the US with world-wide news coverage.

Lehman loss matches forecast -- $2.8 billion
Monday June 16, 9:43 am ET
By Dan Wilchins

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Investment bank Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc (NYSE:LEH - News) posted a quarterly loss of $2.8 billion on Monday, matching its forecast, after recording massive trading and hedging losses.

With the results coming in as expected, analysts focused on the potential for future write-downs at the fourth-largest U.S. investment bank, which still has more than $60 billion of mortgages, real estate assets and asset-backed securities on its books. That amount is well in excess of the company's net worth as measured by shareholders' equity.

Lehman last week said it expected a quarterly loss, its first as a public company, and said it was raising $6 billion of fresh capital.

That announcement triggered a crisis of confidence in the company's management that brought Lehman shares down 20 percent for the week and spurred the demotion of Chief Financial Officer Erin Callan and Chief Operating Officer Joseph Gregory.

Lehman shares rose Monday morning, climbing as much as 68 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $26.49 in early trading. The cost of protecting its bonds against default barely budged

this is the private-sector fallout from the republican policy of 'free' markets. look for some excuse by the booshies to bailout the industry, one fiasco at a time.

they won't deliver relief to NOLa or Iowa, but they will surely bring relief to Bear Stearns and Lehman Bros.

I'm assuming the plan is to chase him into Iran and then bomb the general area mercilessly.

why aren't any of the blogs covering the explicit on-air death threats mike reagan has made against anti-war activists? could you imagine if some air america host made these threats against conservative activists? it would be headline news in the msm... at least rawstory is covering it.

Reagan should be investigated for advocating violence. But, who will investigate him, our criminal government? We are in a new dark age.

Holy shit! That Reagan shit-head should be arrested and charged with attempted murder.

i can understand the msm blackout of this story(reagan's death threats), but the liberal blogs blackout of the story is puzzling...

I'm really not surprised that there is a reich-wing MSM blackout. We all know if someone form Air America made this type death threats about the darlings on the right (i.e. coulter, o'racist, vannity, etc.), the MSM would be having a collective orgasm. Faux news would have hourly "updates" on the "liberal death threat"-gate. The son of a former president makes a death threat the media is utterly silent.... Disgusting.

Maybe Bush should be more concerned about what is going on inside of Afghanistan that worrying about Bin Laden as we see from this article:

Taliban Fighters Take Over Several Afghan Villages Outside Kandahar

"NATO has said the prison break was a tactical success for the Taliban but would not have a long-term or large impact on the Afghan conflict. However, Afghan officials have warned that dangerous members of the militia are now free, and that the prison attack essentially boosted the insurgents' ranks by 400."

Alert! Mike
FDL's Marcy (Emptywheel) is at a Democratic event in Flint Michigan where Obama will be appearing soon. She will be blogging from there. There is an alert out asking folks to call Obama's office asking him to step out on the NO RETROACTIVE IMMUNITY ISSUE. Call Obama 202-228-4260.

Also on Thursday Scott McClellan testifies on the Plame outing for Waxman/Conyers. Call their offices let them know you are watching and expect them to get those documents (Bush and Cheney's testimonies) that they are requesting from Mukasey. And if not we expect them to send out Congress's sergeant in arms and arrest Mukasey's ass.

sorry not to link (can not link from this computer)over to Marcy's at firedoglake but I know you know the way there.

This is referenced in the Rove chit-chat post. C&L is ontop of it, baby.

"Things More Muslim Than Obama" makes a nice companion for "Things Older Than John McCain."

Digby's post is (not surprisingly) a good one on an important subject, one I wish more news organizations would focus on. Lindsay Graham, Duncan Hunter, and more obnoxious demagogues always try to pretend that everyone we've ever arrested and detained is innocent.

Waxman Subpoenas the Bush and Cheney Transcripts
By: emptywheel Monday June 16, 2008 9:00 am [digg]

Well, it looks like Henry Waxman isn't going to wait around for HJC to follow my suggestions on getting the Bush and Cheney transcripts.

Over at Firedoglake

CALL WAXMAN THANK HIM FOR GETTING ON THIS AND THEN ASK HIM TO SEND OUT THE CONGRESS'S SERGEANT AT ARMS TO ARREST MUKASEY'S ASS WHEN HE REFUSES TO HAND OVER THE CHENEY BUSH TRANSCRIPTS.
WAXMANS OFFICE
2O2-225-3976

LET HIM KNOW WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH. HAUL THESE ARROGANT ASSES IN FOR NOT UPHOLDING THE RULE OF LAW
