FISA Debate on CSPAN: Open Thread

I just saw CA's Rep. Jane Harman complement the new bill. She said her constituents begged her not to cave and still she liked this bill.

Crying Boehner is praising the bipartisanship behind it. That tells you all you need to know...Jerrold Nadler attacks it...

I ,too, saw harman and heard her saw her e-mail was full of messages from constituents saying NO and she'd had 100's of phone calls saying NO.

Where exactly does she get off going completely against what her bosses are telling her?

Welcome to the new and improved United States of America; land of the formerly free and home of the spineless. Let the new regime of fascism begin. Obviously there will be little difference regardless of who holds the white house or congress. Representative government is dead, unless you're a major corporation who breaks the law.

Just left a message on Pelosi's voice message. Took me over 15 minutes to get through. Very busy this morning, hoping that's a good thing.

Here's the poop from Democracy for America:

As Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi can pull the bill from the floor and refuse to call a vote.

Call Speaker Pelosi right now and demand she stand up to President Bush and stop telecom immunity.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi
(202) 225-0100

Suggested Script:
"I'm calling to tell Speaker Pelosi I am depending on her to pull any bill from the floor that will ultimately grant immunity to telecommunications companies who illegally spied on Americans. Can I count on Speaker Pelosi to stand up to President Bush?"

Naturally I improvised on the message but if enough calls come in, who knows.

Like I've said it before, the problem with our current system is not just the republicans, but it's the democrats and the political class that's emerged since the new deal the newt put together in the 90's. I wish I could be a politician for 10 years and then get out to a lobbying position (which is mostly carrying envelops of cash to politicians) gig that pays 7 figures a year - for what ? Lewis Black said it best about the politicians/rich people in our country - they are so uncreative (recent policy is evidence of this) - second houses, whores, etc - and they are sinking our collective ship.

Where is the dissention that made us great ?!$%@ Keep your guns friends, I'm swimming to the new shore and hoping to make something new, but just for myself, but for the people of this country that still believe we can be modest, respectful, innovative, and creative forces in this modern world that no politician understands - Ted Stevens said that the internet is a series of tubes... I rest my case.

This bill will give President Obama near dictatorial powers- he will be able to direct individuals to break the law without impunity, with only the most meaningless rubber stamp to be added later in a classified ruling by a castrated federal court- which will not review any evidence but simply take orders from the Attorney General. CALL 866-675-2008 (dial 6 then 0) and tell Barack Obama that you expect him to take a strong stand against this bill. His conflict of interest in not opposing it would be rather obvious.

As leader of the Democratic Party he could end this with a phone call to Pelosi or at the very least he could give a speech opposing it in time for that speech to matter.

I think it's time for our honeymoon with Sen. Obama to end, he's been getting "the benefit of the doubt" from progressives, we all know that he has to move more to the center in the general election but there are some core values that can not be compromised and one of those happens to be the protection of the constitution. Sure we want Obama to win but it looks like he's going to make us fight for what we want to protect such as civil liberties just like the rest of them do.

If he hides from this issue then I think we'll all understand that Obama is not the answer to our problems, he's just another politician we are going to have to fight with in Washington.

Pelosi and Hoyer have it wrong about the telecom immunity. Kucinich doesn't even have it right.

The goal of the lawsuits is not to simply "find out what happened to make sure it never happens again." We need to prove that the laws are there to be followed. The problem is the message sent by the immunity measure itself. No matter how good this law might be, what is accomplished with passing laws if you send a clear message that the laws need not be obeyed?

That's whats being done here, and in that sense, this is not simply a four-year provision. It sends a decades long signal that laws are subordinate to the authority of the president. That is far too dangerous to be considered.

So, now what. They left the Telecoms off the hook, they broke the law and now they didn't retroactive. I wish I could do that with speeding tickets.

But doesn't this mean they have to stop now? They can no longer tap me? Or will they just continue to do it and get another retroactive law passed in a few more years?

This is horrible, the rich dudes don't have to follow the law cause they make it, damn.

This bill absolves a company from liability if requested by the 'president'.

Consider corporations - say ... blackwater ... spying for Bush under contract (no bid of course). Did I just describe presidential contracts to spy on the public? Wouldnt this satisfy the bills requirements? A contract would satisfy presidential request.

FISA debate!!??? What fucking debate... From what I hear... It's all a done deal... In the finest smoke filled backroom tradition... Our duly elected democratic congress and our duly criminal executive branch swapping spit and backpatting each other all the way to their incessant summer break...

I'd call it a cavein but that would infer that there was actually some kind of fight to prevent it.. And I now don't think there was ever any such contest... The only fight or debate if you will, was apparently in just how to package and sell it in such a way that these 'people' responsible for it, could avoid the fallout...

What a pack of weasels, every last one who voted for this abomination......Oh and Boehner??? You can turn off the waterworks ya prick... We are heading to a one world order and that meant one religion, one economy, one political leader of the world and one religious leader of the world from Rome.

The rich will have wine and oil as it is written by the prophets of the old. It is the poor and the middle class that are/will be persecuted and tried.

Both houses are in it. The fate of the future president is in the hands of the lawmakers.

Oversight to CYA-slight. No duh Harman likes the bill she was briefed on the criminal wiretap program years ago and approved (along w/Pelosi, Sen. Rockefeller, Sen. Roberts-Gang of 8-who were forbidden from telling anyone else). Rather than expose the Executive and their own roles in failing to fully brief Congress, i.e. the WHouse lie of "Congress was briefed at least a dozen times on the program," they chose to CYA.

Dr. Acula@30... legalizing crimes
(search page prior to posting, someone had noted "compliment")
Dem. leadership also believe the Constitution is a goddamned piece of paper. After legalizing torture, rendition, and criminal detention w/Military Commissions Act, they pass this beauty to nix 4th amend. rts to be "secure in our persons, papers, and effects"

If "a wiretap requires a court order" per Bush, Why do politicians and telcos need immunity?

We are being engulfed, swallowed whole as a country by a fascist movement in both parties.
Power back to the states is the only point of power that can work. the times of baby steps are long past and would have been appropriate 40 years ago. Not now.
