By John Amato Saturday Jun 21, 2008 2:30pmBrian Williams announces that Tom Brokaw will take over Meet the Press until after the election. I knew they would never go with the crew they had on hand.

i already miss russert
Wow. These days I'm expecting them to announce William Kristol or maybe Mike Savage.
Why not have the CEO of GE?
unlike john, i didn't KNOW, but i was surely hoping that "they would never go with the crew they had on hand."
take care of yourself, tom... it's gonna be a helluva ride...

Country Club Sundays.
Thank God!! Out of respect to Tim Russert, who has his good and bad points....Williams has NO good points.
Glad to hear Brokaw will take the reigns.
Wouldn't it be a sight if Rachel Maddow took the show...someone who asks questions that are to the point?
Poor Chrissy Matthews must be drinking hard today. Number two at the Peacock and still can't get the promotion after #1 bites the big one...

i thought Brian Williams did a fine job. he let Lindsey Graham speak and Mr.Graham bombed. he had his talking points but was never convincing.
This is a good move. I wasn't going to watch with that NuNu Brian Williams at the helm. He is absolutely clueless.
dw @ 9:
Did you notice how carefully he framed the issue of China drilling off our coasts in Cuba leading listeners to think that China is drill in coastal Cuba. China is drilling in Cuba but not off the coast.
Williams was pathetic today, for sure.
Letting that Politico guy say some really idiotic things and go unchallenged.
And then to just flat out shill for the McCain talking points for the rest of the
show.
I have to believe Brokaw has a little more respect for himself than to put on
that type of performance week after week.

It causes my browser to freeze and I need to reboot browser.
Does anybody have a fix?
.
Lindsey Graham's performance was so sad today. He couldn't look at Biden when Biden was speaking and no matter what facts were brought up he ignored them completely and just stuck to his talking points as if nothing had happened. When Biden brought up all of the permits for offshore drilling that aren't being used, Graham kept saying we need to allow offshore drilling. My theory is that he's just a robot programmed to spout a few lines. Williams mentioned that Russert had prepared for today's show a few weeks ago, which means that he smacked down Graham from the great beyond with the quotes he used to show Lindsey's changes of heart. I'm really going to miss him, but I think Brokaw will do a fine job.
I have come to see Brokaw as just another right wing soldier. He will 'call florida' for McCain.
.
I want to see Sissy Ghram place OIL wells in his constituents backyard...
.
I'm relieved actually. I thought it might be Williams or Tweety-- or worse.
big fucking deal
another sunday and other tool
his council on foreign relations membership now comes full circle
brokaw, opinion and consent manufacturer from way back
Dear Brian Williams,
I like how you refer to yourself and the rest of the village as "all stars."
I got some news for you.
You're just a bunch of goddamn SALESMEN.
Might as well the Aventis Corp. sales rep on the screen actually hawking his shit instead of your punk ass pretending to report anything.
Doesn't matter who's the hose because who watches that biased wimpy program anyway?
williams is not worthy, no more so than matt lauer.
budda @ 1:
why?
I called it last week, that it was Brokaw's slot, if he felt like having a full time job again. It's a "no brainer" for NBC, there is no controversy in it, considering the other folks who were being considered for the gig.
Yes Brokaw is a "mumbler" I've woked with him a few times, and he really sounds like he's eating a thick, peanut butter sandwhich when he talks. But, he's as good a choice as any, via NBC in house talent.
Wordsmiths and toadies, all. These courtesans to their corporate masters are self-reverential and self-referential. The know not of the role of the press in a citizen-based democracy. Celebrities, character politics, gossip and a rancid, mindless, pointless, vacuous, insipid American pop culure are their frame of reference. Ignore the shitheads.
Well at least it's Matthews or Olbermann.
The show would be unbearable with them at the helm. Heck Meet the Press would turn into Countdown with the same 2 or 3 political analysts.
Brokaw despite his CFR ties(meh) will make an excllent moderator.
Hopefully he will hold the seat warm for either Gwen Ifill or Chuck Todd.
Hulk @ 6:
Thankfully, its not going to happen. Ms. Maddow is too partisan to host Meet the Press and the last think you want on Meet the Press is a host that is too partisan.
No, my choice for permanent host is Gwen Ifill.
Marcinema @ 23:
I don't think that NBC has any good in house talent suitable for hosting "Meet the Press". I consider both Brokaw and Williams to be typical MSM empty-air-heads. Olbermann would be a good choice other than his being considered by the right as leaning too far to the left.
edgecity @ 17:
I'm with you, I was quite relieved. Brokaw may not be perfect but he's an actual journalist, unlike 95% of the MSM 'entertainers' today.
Tom Brokaw is a criminal.
Who is more obsessed with the media, the media, or the blogs online?
You know he`ll kiss ass for the Bush gang.He doesn`t want to get another anthrax letter,a true poison pen letter.
Tom Brokow again? We would like to have a new face on Meet the Press. Olbermann is a narcissistic guy and that meant his pictures will be covered on all websites. For example, he is all over on Huff Post.
Brian williams with his priestly voice is going to put the audience to sleep.
Luckily, MSM did not blame Bush/Cheney for Russert's sudden death. What about Libby?
Tom Brokaw is extremely to the Right...and he will not press government officials questioning them as hard as T.Russert did.
I'm going to stop watching the show.
Tom Brokaw is nice talker..but we need someone who asks these poliiticians tough questions...
If comedy shows hosts can do it...I can't see why Brokaw and company can't.
If Brokaw wants to succeed on 'Meet The Press'...he needs to change his style...otherwise he and NBC will lose viewers....
Charles @ 29:
yup
I believe NBC should look outside their house to the best interviewer on tv today. John Stewart. Great interviews and he can adlib a fill when the guest is an idiot.
"Tom Brokaw is extremely to the Right"
huh?
I was surprised to learn upon Mr Russert's death the "Meet the Press" made about $50 million for GE last year. Where does this money come from? Why from the program's corporate sponsors. Money directed to the program by men like Dick Cheney from the corporate coffers for catapulting the corparate message.
This money is a reward for doing the work of the corporations rather than being market based considering the show's paltry viewership. Do Exxon Mobil and the Archer Daniels Midland Company need to advertise? Hardly.
Brokaw will do the work of his corporate masters until the next election because he is vain enough to sincerely believe that he can effect the outcome. I leave it to you to cipher what outcome he desires.
I thought Tom Brokaw had retired to the CIA rest home.
I figured they’d give it to Brokaw as an interim thing till the election, kind of like when CBS had Schieffer do the news while they were looking for a replacement for Rather.
I can’t think of anyone on the NBC roster that I’d like to see get the job permanently. Some people have mentioned Gwen Ifill and I think she would be a good pick. I also thought as I was watching this morning that it would be a good show for Ted Koppel. I know that’s not going to happen, but he’s an interviewer who really listens and knows how to push with follow-up questions.
Replace one no-talent hack with another. Brokejaw's no better.
I don't get it.
Where the hell are you guys coming from with this stuff about Brokaw being a criminal and being from the hard right? I think some of you are so stuck on the left side... of the left side... that you have lost your perspective regarding WHAT THE MIDDLE LOOKS LIKE! Tom Brokaw is about as MIDDLE MIDDLE as you can get in American Politics.
That's what made him a good news anchor for so many years.
That's what will make him a good choice for Meet The Press.
"I knew they would never go with the crew they had on hand."
That's because they all suck. So does St. Thomas of Brokaw. But they forget. Or they know it...
I'm sure that this is a trial period for Brokaw to see if his corporate masters can keep him in check. I think he will reject their attempts to rein in his objectivity and someone else will be eventually selected.
i think they should have gone with Schuster.
Tom "America's drinkin' buddy" Brokaw. All the excitement of stale toast.
I don't think I've ever seen Brokaw when he didn't look and sound like he was coming off a two-day Tequila binge.
It takes a lot to crush that pesky conscience and say what you're told.
Hopefully the viewers will turn off their TV's and come to the blogs, on that computer thing that let's them talk back.
There's a freakin' awesome "keepin' it real" assessment of the late Mr. Russert at The Nation. :-)
Chris Gamble @ 25:
Chuck Todd? Over Olbermann?? Oh good grief, get a clue!
What's with all of the anti-Brokaw nonsense? I have a lot of respect for the man.
CowboyBob in Austin @ 41:
He's also a classy guy, an oft-overlooked quality nowadays.
Tom Brokaw is a joke.
budda @ 1:
Me, too, but there's not a more fitting transitional replacement for him than Brokaw.
I just hope after November, they will no longer consider Tweety or Joe Scar for the job unless they want to cancel MTP and take it off the air.
Tom Brokaw is one of the media elite who helped Buscho sell an unjust war to the country. He failed to do his job and ask the questions a responsible free media should ask. Shame on Tom and NBC.
One thing for sure is the fact Tom Brokaw is not going to make me somehow start watching Meet the Press.
Brokaw is surprisingly shallow. They should have just left the seat empty. I guess this was the closest they could come to that.
Graham keeps saying that the PRICE of gas is the major problem that caused him to change his position. Yet he offers nothing that will affect the price of gasoline. Nobody will even address the issue of price controls. Everybody is stuck on the supply-side fix to the problem, like good little Reaganites. There is no supply-side fix to this problem, except possibly rationing. It's time we started to at least consider gasoline price controls.
I was expecting them to ask Dick Cheney to host.
As if they had a choice?
All these newsy guys really bug me with their perfect posture and store bought haircuts.
ysbad@58 Thats not hair ,that"s for-skin, They could put the magical being in that chair, and I still would not watch sheep the press.-CEO
Of course they're going to use this hack. They pay him tons of cash and don't want another long term high pay personality contract floating against their faltering TV network. They are loosing audience and if you think this HACK is going to increase audience, let me give you a hint: I never watch. I just check C&L for anything worth checking out.
I loathe Brian Williams. He is a traitor to his people. He is perfect for this propaganda show.
I just wish people who realize what a hack program it is would refuse to be seen on it.

brokaw will be out of the job before the convention.
I think Tom Brokov and Brian Williams are so biased, it is absolutely terrible. Neither of them compare to Tim Russert. Tim was such a fair person, I really miss him.
