From the Justice Department to the Just Us Department

I don’t want to alarm anyone, but it appears the Justice Department, throughout Bush’s two terms, flagrantly and repeatedly broke the law by politicizing the hiring process. Yes, I know we knew that before, but the DoJ’s Inspector General has made it official.

Justice Department officials over the last six years illegally used “political or ideological” factors to hire new lawyers into an elite recruitment program, tapping law school graduates with conservative credentials over those with liberal-sounding resumes, a new report found Tuesday.

The blistering report, prepared by the Justice Department’s inspector general, is the first in what will be a series of investigations growing out of last year’s scandal over the firings of nine United States attorneys. It appeared to confirm for the first time in an official examination many of the allegations from critics who charged that the Justice Department had become overly politicized during the Bush administration.

“Many qualified candidates” were rejected for the department’s honors program because of what was perceived as a liberal bias, the report found. Those practices, the report concluded, “constituted misconduct and also violated the department’s policies and civil service law that prohibit discrimination in hiring based on political or ideological affiliations.”

According to the investigation, the Justice Department began ignoring merit and making employment decisions based on politics in 2002, when then-Attorney General John Ashcroft restructured the honors program, taking decisions away from career officials in each section of the department, giving power to Bush appointees. When Alberto Gonzales took the reins, the illegalities expanded and were intensified.

If you were affiliated with the Federalist Society, you were practically a shoe-in. If Bush appointees saw certain buzz words in your c.v. — works like “environmental” and “social justice” — your application was rejected.

Leave it to Bush and his cohorts to transform the Justice Department into the Just Us Department.

Same thing the crooked governor in KY did. He pardoned the lot of them and got away with it, except he lost his reelection bid.

yet another impeachable offense that will go unpunished by the "leadership" of the democratic party

I've been hearing about this since yesterday.

well when obama he had better clean house not just DOJ the way it sounds there are quite a few flat earthers in government kinda wonder how my DOJs are from second third string lawy schools?

Yeah, you'd think this would be an important news story. So I dropped by CNN.com to see how they were covering this today. Nothing significant that I could find, but they did give major room to a story about how the Naked Cowboy can sue M&Ms candy for using his likeness (as an M&M, I imagine).

The only people more efficient than the Bush Justice department at weeding out progressives and liberals is the mainstream media.

this is a disgrace.........they intentionally hired less qualified lawyers because they would be loyal to a fault and look the other way.....they hired some lawyers from second and third tier law schools that weren't as qualified...........
this is what scott mcClellen told us..... that this administration was in perpetual politicizing mode....the team was stacked.......UNFAIR ADVANTAGE from cheating

Too late ...

... dont look over your shoulder ... nothing but scorched earth as far as you can see ... nothing to see here ... move along.

Are there any rich people reading this blog?

Commission two bronze statues of Pelossi and Reid blind folded and in chains.

If those with money could care less, then lets start an 'art' fund. Lets buy one acre of land in a prominent location and start a permanent collection of enemies of the constitution and the people statuary with eplanatory plaques.

Not that anyone will answer, but seems to me the next questions are what did the President know and when did he know it. I'm sure Ashcroft and Gonzales carried this out all by themselves, but still, do you think someone could think to ask . . .

Why is the Bush-era DOJ hiring any lawyers if they don't believe in the rule of law?

Shocking, simply shocking, why I almost cannot believe it. Damned liberal media must be making this up, because if it was real, certainly something would be done about. Someone would beheld accountable. Lets call the Justice Department about. Hey, I have a better idea, lets tell Reid and Pelosi about it. They'll do something about it! Wow, great to have a crackerjack Congress around.

Comey and Ashcroft know. They know

What the Hell is going on! Is there any more evidence to convict these guys? Dear God! It's like the entire Bush Administration has a neon sign above their heads, stating,"Yes, we have commited crimes. But, tough shit!" No wonder me and all my fellow C&L's are so dissprited!

Fascists don't do Justice.

These are career civil service appointments, not political slots. Can't touch 'em. That's kinda the point.

Is there any way that some of the people who were turned away based on their political leanings could sue the Justice Dept based on discrimination? If it were any other business they sure could.

This is all just a small part of Rove's 1000-year Republican Rule scenario. It won't be remedied by centrists (sorry Barack). Only progressive liberal Democrats of conscience can restore the values and philosphies that reflect the true intent of the founding fathers. We've just lived through the near destruction of Democracy. Let's get it back.

One of the dis-qualifiers was the applicants use of left language terms like 'social justice'.

But of course, Bush absolutely could not have anyone in Justice with that description.

Violations of the Hatch Act are punishable by firing. But that is for those who violated the Act, not those hired by the violators.

"The blocking of applicants with liberal credentials appeared to be a particular problem in the Justice Department’s civil rights division, which has seen an exodus of career employees in recent years as the department has pursued a more conservative agenda in deciding what types of cases to bring."

Gosh...a Republican administration actively working to gut civil rights laws by stacking the DOJ with cronies who won't bother to enforce them??? I don't believe it. Next you'll be telling me that they stacked the Food and Drug administration with pharmaceutical company cronies that didn't bother to enforce drug testing policies, and free trade hacks who didn't bother to ensure that tainted food could be traced to its origin to contain outbreaks of salmonella poisoning.

What's worse is that the spineless sycophantic pack animals in the Press and in Congress are only talking about this now that everybody ELSE has turned against the Bush administration, and is calling them on their s#!t. When they were still strongly in power, and riding high in the polls, they were all more than willing to follow the percieved alpha males.

People, people, let's not despair! We have months to get through this crap. Let's just veg-out for a while and get prescriptions for Prozac.

I have no doubt this wasn't just a DoJ thing, and that this sort of thing is why Iraq was such a clusterfuck from the beginning. This sort of governmental gangrene is just as contagious as the actual disease.

It's ultimate Reaganomics. Government can't be the solution, because government is the problem. Ipso facto...bring lawyers into government who reject governmental action out of hand, thus conferring upon government a patina of illegitimacy, except illegitimacy does not extend to the lawyers themselves, because they were chosen by a president who was elected by the people.

Oh, that's right. Bush wasn't really elected. Oh, shit. Houston, we've got a problem here.

I was discriminated against by an employer three years ago.

I had the head of HR ON TAPE in the meeting when he told me he was using selective enforcement in my case. And he said it twice so there was no misspeak.

When I took this to EEOC they said after their investigation that there was no evidence of discrimination other than my tape and they couldn't use that. Which was a lie according to one of their lawyers.

I later found out that EEOC has been directed on what cases to take and what not to take. This is why we have had virtually no action in this area.

Damn...

This explains how a nation with 300 million people stretching across two coasts and most of an entire continent, and possessing a part of Polynesia and the Arctic-Subarctic to boot, can't even control a landlocked nation of 28 million. Bush made the same damn stupid mistakes Lincoln and Davis both did during the Civil War, hiring people more for loyalty than skill at the job and smarts.

This does violate The Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act of 1883. This isn't some obscure law. This is the law that establishes the Civil Service. If this did in fact happen (and knowing Bush it did) then it is another Impeachable Offense. My only question is this; what the hell is wrong with these Democrats in Congress?

How long can we, as a country put up with this? DOJ destroyed, Bizillions in debt, broken army, gas prices sky high, two wars(maybe three, with McCain's attitude about Iran). How did we get into such a mess? I blame the Supreme Court for giving us Georgie in the first place.

The fact that you would buttress your argument with an conspiracy to commit murder case is telling. The fact is that the Bush Administration is the murdering conspirators because they are the ones handing out guns to the troops, their lawyers, Blackwater, Iraqi death squads, Afghani tribal leaders, etc to do the dirt. Yet you want to blame the Democrats(yes, they are lame) because they are too cowardly to stop the actual criminals. Get your priorities in order.

Ya think?

If the House Democrats don't force the House Republicans to stay by drawing up Articles of Impeachment for the administration, then they suck. Yes, I know there isn't a lot of time for them to go through the process, but this complacency they've shown with the Bush administration is disgusting.

Speakin' of backsides, what I'd like to see--well maybe not see but at least hear it from a reliable source--is how Bubba, their big, ugly, hairy, nasty, smelly prison cell mate gives it to them in their backside twice a day after dressing them up like Little BoPeep. Now, there's some justice I can get behind (no pun intended)
Now that would do my heart good.

Where is the accountability part? Anybody going to jail? Or is this just another incident where we find out that being a criminal actually DOES pay?

I called Nancy Pelosi and had to leave a message. I stated that she must pursue impeachment hearings vs George Bush, Dick Cheney, and Condoleeza Rice.

I also left a message for Keith Ellison's office asking him to pursue impeachment hearings vs Nancy Pelosi and Mr. Hoyer (if you will).

They have these big law firms in D.C. Someone straight out of law school will never get hired, even if they graduated top of their class at Yale or Harvard. The only way to get hired is to be connected to the right people. The DOJ has always been a back door. Someone could always spend a few years at the DOJ then get hired on by one of these big law firms. None of these people are going to go back home. They are all going to stay in D.C. These law firms have a lot more power than what one would think. Aside from the fact that these law firms represent the biggest corporations in the World, they also supply the independent counsels, and they are the ones that write the briefs that the Supreme Court reads. The group that they were hiring from is called the Federalists. It's a college group that was started by Justice Scalia. They support an absolutely asinine view of the Constitution called Originalism. They refute the idea that the Constitution is a living document. Their ideas are so strange that no college professor would ever teach this garbage. That was why they created the Federalist as sort of a school club. It's to indoctrinate people with radical ideas that professors refuse to teach. These are the people that claim that torture is legal; because, it wasn't ordered by a judge; therefore, it's not technically cruel and unusual punishment. These are the people that our going to be representing our corporations in Federal Courts for generations to come. This is a very bad thing. I hope that American Corporations are smart enough to quit hiring people from the DOJ. They could get themselves into a lot of trouble relying upon these people for legal advice.

http://wtop.com/podcast/611204.rss

Oh, good grief... YOU gotta hear the commentary... Anyway, you'll die laughing.

So, the Justice Department broke the law, eh?

Check this out:

1) Making or causing to be made false or misleading statements to lawfully authorized investigative officers and employees of the United States.

2) Withholding relevant and material evidence or information from lawfully authorized investigative officers and employees of the United States.

3) Approving, condoning, acquiescing in, and counseling witnesses with respect to the giving of false or misleading statements to lawfully authorized investigative officers and employes of the United States and false or misleading testimony in duly instituted judicial and congressional proceedings.

4) Interfering or endeavoring to interfere with the conduct of investigations by the Department of Justice of the United States and congressional committees.

5) Endeavoring to misuse the Central Intelligence Agency, an agency of the United States.

6) Making false or misleading public statements for the purpose of deceiving the people of the United States.

7) Endeavoring to cause prospective defendants, and individuals duly tried and convicted, to expect favored treatment and consideration in return for their silence or false testimony, or rewarding individuals for their silence or false testimony.

8) Misusused the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Secret Service, and other executive personnel, in violation or disregard of the constitutional rights of citizens, by directing or authorizing such agencies or personnel to conduct or continue electronic surveillance or other investigations for purposes unrelated to national security, the enforcement of laws, or any other lawful function of his office.

9) Acting personally and through his subordinates and agents, in violation or disregard of the constitutional rights of citizens, authorized and permitted to be maintained a secret investigative unit within the office of the President, financed in part with money derived from campaign contributions to him, which unlawfully utilized the resources of the Central Intelligence Agency, engaged in covert and unlawful activities, and attempted to prejudice the constitutional right of an accused to a fair trial.

10) Failed to take care that the laws were faithfully executed by failing to act when he knew or had reason to know that his close subordinates endeavored to impede and frustrate lawful inquiries by duly constituted executive; judicial and legislative entities

11) In disregard of the rule of law, knowingly misused the executive power by interfering with agencies of the executive branch

IN SUM, acted in a manner contrary to his trust as President and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice, and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.

Scum, total scum. It was one big party and look what it's done to this nation.

There you are pelosi...and other slacker congressmen.....an opening.

This news "officially" coming to light gives you an opportunity to change your dumb ass stance on "NO impeachment on my watch"! This is "new news", and add this in to the information you have learned from mcClellan's book....and you have a zillion NEW REASONS to impeach these sons-of-bitches.

Of course, it will never be completed before they are chased out of town anyway, but wouldn't it be "nice" if you incompetent fools showed that the Constitution means something in this country? We won't allow criminals to misuse the US government and military to their own evil advantages? Or...will you allow them?

Wake up and remember your country is calling you!

In our wildest fantasy; let's say a Democrat wins the White House. Is there any way we can rid ourselves of all these unfairly hired employees? Or is it permanent?

I'm sure the same policy has gone on at the State Department, etc.

We are beat down, but there is hope. My son watched the PBS show on The Sixties a couple nights ago. He is 25 and interested, but not very active. He said to me, "I always thought your generation just gave up, but you didn't; you were beaten to the ground." Kinda feels that way again.

Maybe, he and the rest of his generation will get 'active' when they realize the draft is coming.

I agree! It is our jobs as parents to teach our young that there is nothing honorable about killing for your country.

Pelosi cant help us out. She has too many skeletons to be effective. San Francisco needs to replace her with Cindy Sheehan!!!!!

Civil Service be damned, you gotta run their records for any connection to Liberty University, Regency University, Oral Roberts, what's that outfit up in Michigan, where the Pres was poking his daughter-in-law? Anybody shows up positive for any connection's gotta be immediately terminated...Look at their law degrees. If the seal is Reynolds Aluminum (the shiny side), they're as phony as the degree mills they attended. Run 'em right the fouck off!

naw! just two generations of people who let the TV double as a babysitter.

Abso-fookin-lutely GENAU, brother...
teevee was the apotheosis of the conquest.
I'm 62, and only vaguely recall life before teevee.
Indeed, many of my earliest memories coincide with the first teevee the family got. '53? I was seven, and was already a reader, thanks to a grandfather who had an eye for the future. He taught me to read on Clarence E. Mulford's Hopalong Cassidy books, sitting on his lap...He smoked big cigars, and drank bourbon, iirc. Died in '54, at 75 or so...

And nobody got fired... no impeachments, no criminal charges... the Dems are just as bad by not doing ANYTHING this administration has done.

And the Repugnants impeach for a blow job... now who are the assholes? Rove, Cheney, Bush are laughing their ass of.

And the Dems will send off a stearnly worded letter. And at the very end of the letter it will say, "P.S. We love this shit".....

I have no doubt this wasn't just a DoJ thing, and that this sort of thing is why Iraq was such a clusterfuck from the beginning. This sort of governmental gangrene is just as contagious as the actual disease.

Ya think?

No, I know that it is prevalent. Bush's Administration seems to positively glory in this corruption. Why the Hell does nothing ever get done about it?

yada , yada , , yada , , , NOTHING will change . Spineless Obama probably won't even bring this up to the voters . and everybody knows the MediaWhores will effectively ignore it .

so it'll only bounce around the lefty blogs and , and Nothing to see here folks , move along .

I hope I'm wrong , but based on history ...

DHavok @ 55:

If the House Democrats don't force the House Republicans to stay by drawing up Articles of Impeachment for the administration, then they suck. Yes, I know there isn't a lot of time for them to go through the process, but this complacency they've shown with the Bush administration is disgusting.

Clinton gets caught not telling the truth about sexual misconduct with a consenting adult, and they waste no time in impeaching him. We've been hearing about these illegal activities for awhile now from this administration and still, only a handful of Democrats are even really trying for impeachment

it just goes to show that the DLC, DSCC, DCCC are all (D-republicans)

Watching Abrams yesterday talk about this was priceless as the Republican mouthpiece continuously attempted to compare this story to the fact that Clinton fired all the US attorneys when he came into office. As if there is no difference appointing a new crop of US attorney’s for a fresh start and hiring and firing US attorneys based on whether or not they will do your political dirty work, or trying to stack the entire justice department with career employees that got their jobs based on whether or not they would be loyal acolytes for a single party. It is amazing how Repubs refuse to even acknowledge that Bush does anything wrong. The fact that there is ample proof that this administration actively sought to turn the DOJ into a political arm of the executive branch is truly one of the worst betrayals this admin has perpetrated on the country. The firing of the US attorneys because they wouldn't prosecute Dems on bogus charges, or because they dared prosecute Republicans for corruption is almost inconceivable. There can’t be a more reprehensible act than destroying the American people’s ability to believe that they can trust that their government won’t seek to use the law to punish them because of their political beliefs. Trying to institutionalize this through hiring partisans is simply treason. The Siegelman case is the smoking gun, and all the players need to be investigated and held responsible. I despise these people so much for the way they have tried to screw our country. Cons bitch all the time that gov't is the problem. The truth is all these so called conservatives spend all their time exploiting government to increase their wealth and power. Their worst fear is good government that keeps them in check from their greed obsessed lifeview. The lasting legacy of this President will be his destruction of the machinery of government that actually makes our country better. All the institutional knowledge that simply got up and left because they could not stand the intentional savaging and politicization of their departments is cause for dismay. From the EPA to the DOJ and everything in between, these guys have abused their power, ignoring science, disregarding reality, etc, all in the name of advancing their ideological agenda. They wanted to make government agencies impotent so that even when they are out of office they can continue to do as they please without interference from pesky regulators. Putting a bunch of people at the DOJ, and appointing a bunch of right wing judges simply furthers that agenda. Rip out the guts of the agencies that have oversight, and stack the legal system with ideologues that are amenable to you, then your friends can go right along screwing the people of this country with impunity long after you're out of office, and you didn't need to pass a single piece of legislation to do it.

"From the Justice Department to the Just Us Department"?

Has someone been watching Justice League Unlimited?

(Good episode)
