John Conyers grills John 'torture' Yoo: 'I think we understand the games that are being played... He stonewalls
By John Amato Wednesday Jun 25, 2008 7:53pm
Rep. John Conyers grilled former Bushie John Yoo, who was a major player in instituting torture as US policy today's hearing called: "Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties."
Watch Yoo stammer and stonewall Conyers repeated efforts to get him to admit what he said previously. That the president could torture whenever he thought it was just and he could do it in the most heinous way possible.
Conyers: It was reported that you were asked if a president could order a suspects child be tortured in a gruesome fashion and you responded that "I think it depends on why the president thinks he needs to do that. Is that accurate?
Yoo: Mr. Chairman, I don't believe it's accurate because it took what I said out of context. (I see) The quote stopped right before I continued to explain the number of things which I appreciate the opportunity...
Conyers: So far what I read was accurate, but there was more?
Yoo: But it stops at mid sentence, I mean I finished the sentence during the debate but I didn't get a chance to...
Conyers: OK, thank you...Is there anything professor Yoo that the president can not order to be done to a suspect if he believed it necessary for national defense?
Yoo: Ahhh, Mr Chairman, I think it goes back to the quote you just read because..
Conyers: No, I'm just asking you the question, maybe it doesn't, but what do you think?
Yoo: I think it's the same question I was asked..
Conyers: Well, what's the answer?
Yoo: First, can I make clear I'm not talking about...
Conyers: You don't have to make anything clear. Just answer the question counsel.
Yoo: I just want to make sure I'm not saying...
Conyers: You don't have to worry about not saying, just answer the question.
Yoo: OK, my thinking right now?
Conyers: Yes, right now. This moment.
Yoo: This moment...My thinking right now, first, the question you're proposing...
Conyers: WHAT is the answer?
Yoo: Mr Chairman, I'm trying to make....
Conyers: No your'e wasting my time....Look counsel, we've all practiced law...
Chairman Conyers: "I didn't ask you if you ever gave him advice, I asked you do you think the President could order a suspect buried alive?"
Yoo: "Mr. Chairman, my view right now, is I don't think a president would - no American president would ever have to order that or feel it necessary to order that."
Chairman Conyers: "I think we understand the games that are being played..."
Was Yoo playing Abbott or Costello?

Primus? Maybe a soldering iron would refresh his memory...
They hate us for our freedom
gee, maybe we should waterboard the answers out of him.
More on the hearing.
http://www.consortiumnews.com/2008/062608.html
Why did he keep using the phrase "right now?"
That out of context bullshit was just that BULLSHIT! Those words should never have been spoken in any context
Does he have kids? Do they have testicles?
Does he have a son?
By their unspoken words ye shall know them.
Yoo to Conyers: "Quit torturing me with these questions!!!"
Yoo is a Fascist whore pig who would love to see the downfall of our country as we know it or knew it. There's big money in that.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/cheney/themes/addington.html
if you haven't watch cheney's law Frontline check it out when you have the time....it reveals their strategy
There is a special place in hell reserved for John Yoo.
Rep. John Conyers is the biggest joke in the history of the US Congress. He is a paper tiger. He is a dog without a bite. Conyers issued Karl Rove a House Judiciary subpoena. Rove promptly told Conyers to go F*CK himself. What did Conyers do about that? Not a damn thing. Conyers holds countless committee meetings and throws the findings in the garbage can. What a joke.
Goddam, if those two assholes don't go to jail, our republic's days are numbered.
I agree, orcas @ 13. Conyers is a joke. What ever happened to the Downing Street minutes meeting they had to hold in the basement when the Thugs were in the majority? I can tell you. NOTHING.
orcas @ 13:
It is hard to take that Conyers idiot seriously, when all he does is huff and puff, and on top of that he is married to this sorry excuse of wife:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiogXT9xZBQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqOSNI7l0bQ
Ironically the only time this jackass Conyers grew a spine was when he requested capitol security to remove forcibly anti-war protesters who had the "gall" of assuming Conyers' as a tax paid office was accountable to the public.
He has done a damn thing to prosecute the mobsters in charge, and yet he has applied force on the people requesting he does his job.
Dem or Republican it is all for show... plus with the FISA capitulation by Obama. I am certain we are circling the drain.
orcas @ 13:
Aw, c'mon. I hear he writes a very stern letter, if need be.
TomK @ 18:
I can understand why you feel that way, but good old regular criminal prosecution would be enough.but that's just me.
Until someone is hauled off to a room under the Congress by the Sargeant-at-Arms and held there, I consider them all to be worthless cowards.
After watching the film clips of Mrs Conyers ( thanks, FNORD) I can understand why Mr Conyers acts the way he does.
He is pussywhipped.
Pointless, waste of time.
Conyers should retire.
Both Addington and Yoo were chosen to serve specific functions for Cheney and Bush - legal cover.
It worked.
When I play this wmv file using Windows Media Player,
there is no sound. However, when I use the Gom
Player there is sound. Does anyone else have this
problem.
Conyers wasn't very effective in pinning down
either Yoo or Addington in the questioning
unfortunately.
To even consider voting Republican means you are not human.
I understand why people are excited about the prospect of an Obama presidency. I will probably vote for him, though Kucinich was my first choice. But in light of all of the evil shit perpetrated by "our" government, personified by the likes of Yoo et al, does anyone really think that a damn election is going to matter for shit? (please do not tase, I said I'm voting for BO) I am afraid that it will take something more...proactive.
Yoo, in typical lawyerly fashion, attempts to answer other questions rather than the one he was asked. Can the President bury someone alive if it deems it necessary for national security? I'd like an answer to that question, Yoo -- not whether you think any president ever would do such a horrible thing...but whether YOU think he COULD do it, while remaining within the confines of the US Constitution.
Conyers should have kept his feet to the fire, and taken as much time as necessary to get an answer to it. Instead, he moved on after some huffing and puffing...to none other than Addington who decided to do a little huffing and puffing himself.
Great theater... But who is in control here? Obviously not Conyers.
Why isn't the MSM repoting this? I mean this is news! I'm tired of hearing about polls and the latest Obama, Hillary stuff. It's seems MSM will do anything to protect Georgie.
Torture would be wrong and unlawful but Yoo serving some time in a chickenshed in Gitmo would be very fitting for the crimes he is responsible for.
I agree - Conyers is ineffectual and needs to retire. The worst moment of the hearing: at the end Conyers thanked Yoo & Addington for appearing! I couldn't believe it.
Dale18@22:
I've got sound on the wmv file.
Yeah... "Grilled" sure isnt the right world. How about "clumsily buttered".
I'll admit that Conyers isn't the best at compelling forthcoming testimony. The guys on this committe who are really good at it are Wexler, Davis & Schiff.
Not to be confused with the personal injury specialists at the firm of Davis, Wexler & Schiff.
the reason no one is ever held accountable for any crime
is because they are ALL guilty of some crime or another.
holding one person accountable means holding ALL of them accountable.
and who the hell in congress is gonna do that??
therefore this dog and pony show..
move along..business as usual..
{Deleted, Off topic. Site monitor}
They asked David Addington about torturing children too. His answer: "I don't agree or disagree with it." Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable.
Andy K Jong Il @ 31:
Personal Injury Specialists. hmmmmmmm?
Are we talkin about Dewey, Cheetum and Howe?
Jesus, Conyers' BA and JD are both from Wayne State. Not the best school in the world. I'm not surprised...If he was a U of M grad, I'd be really disappointed.
{Thank You. SiteMonitor}
That was a big waste of my valuable time on both ends.
Conyers was fishing for juicy quotes and Yoo was avoiding saying anything at all.
Damn I hate politics!
Porn is so much more straightforward, and a lot less sleazy.
muddy- I like their senses of humor, but the Car Talk guys need new joke writers.
J*sus H. Christ, that was depressing.
Bottomless sophistry, evasion and dishonesty. These assholes just live and breathe deception.
Could they be more conniving, more slippery? I don't think so.
{ Deleted, Off Topic. Thanks for pointing that out. Site Monitor}
Lots of sound and feigned fury, signifying nothing.
Well I suppose it was a tiny bit fun to watch Conyers Sweat Yoo for however long he was sitting there going all ehh, ahh, hummina, hummina.... And is it just me or does most people watching that Addington bit get the urge to shove their size (whatever) right up his snarky smartaleck ass???? Will anything come of this committee meeting??? Don't know, doubt it, ain't holding my breath....
OK Mr. Conyers, I want to like you, I like the fact that you aren't giving these tools much in the way of softballs so far as this vid makes it look... Balls really in your court sir... Make something real happen here. Hold these fuckers really accountable and make them pay some kind of price for all their bullshit... I, and I think plenty of others, have had quite enough of the phony matinee theater you congress critters have put out there for 'we the (suffering) people' to put up with these last few years.....JD
{Deleted, Off Topic. That was a waste of time and Bandwidth. SiteMonitor}
this video freaking rules i watched it earlier today and was laughing my ass off, even though the subject isn't really funny.
Conyers to Addington, upon finishing, "....thank you very much cocksucker ."
ummm...this was the first round...i belive the grilling occurs during the second round
Widespread @ 14:
That's a done deal sad to say. I had all the confirmation for that when the report came out 2 weeks ago that GW et al had lied, embellished etc their way into the war. Yes, I know we all know that, but the official government report is in and nothing, nada, zero was done about it, it's old news. They committed treason and nothing is being done. So yea, the republic is over, just the date of confirmed death isn't in yet.
These are the facist scum that created the "unified executive branch" that Sen. Obama has shown, by his cave on FISA, that he is only too happy to inherit.
Ahhh, the stability and continuity of our democracy.
Ain't it grand?
Hunh? That was the best he could do with Addington? Addington made a fool of Conyers. Why don't we get some serious lawyers into these hearings to question witnesses, because congressmen are obviously not up to it.
And, at the end of Yoo's comments, Yoo said the president "would" not be able to bury someone alive, but Conyers wanted to know if the president "could". He never followed up, which is a key question.
Issues are complex enough that congressmen should appoint experts to question witnesses for them. And, when there is conflicting testimony, the witnesses should retire to another room with congrssional staffers to argue among themselves to come to a conclusion that is then presented. The lame congressional interrogators asking experts questions is stupid. Anyone remember DiFi questioning Judge Roberts? It was like a 5th grader talking to a Ph.D. in black hole theory. Clueless. Our governance depends on those hearings and those hearings are useless.
Yoo is a great A - staler.
Just watched the video - bingo.
John Yoo, has and is doing everything he can to make America more like North Korea. From him being a propionate of torture, to him being a propionate of turning America into a dictatorship. He openly shows his contempt for civil liberties, and the Constitution. I hope and pray that someday he will be tried and convicted of war crimes, and that he has a very long and lonely existence in a prison cell. Not that I believe he would feel regret for his crimes, just that I think there would be some justice in such a punishment for him.
{OK, Sorry you feel that way aster. SiteMonitor}
Yoo is very good at not committing perjury, and Addington is as arrogant as Cheney.
Even if they do commit perjury nothing will be done because the Justice Dept will never arrest or detain anyone affiliated with the BushCo LLC.
Contempt of Congress means nothing if Congress has no authority outside of its own body.......checks and balances????
see if you can spot john yoo.
Commenters on KPFK said both Yoo and Addington displayed very smirky, defiant, bad attitudes in their response to the questions. I was listening and had the impression they were deliberately playing games with the questions often not answering even after repeatedly having the same questions put them. I thought they were in contempt as much as if they had refused to appear. The Democrats were pretending to be strict with them using harsh language but if they don't cite them for contempt, it is clear proof where the Democrats really stand.
That fucker sounds just like Gonzales. They've been practicing their same bullshit.
Conyers 'Perry Commo' like mannerisms aside:
I think a good way to get these 2 paper thugs (along with the Veep): Is to have them answer questions with the exact same way they have managed to get GWB to get thugs that happen to have Arabic as their first language to answer questions.
Let's see if they would like it....
Imagine Addington or Yoo or Cheney checking in baggage at the airport and a couple of guys scoop them up......
Next - welcome to Gitmo!.......
I'm pretty sure these smug a-hole's pants will bulge.....
Addington is the smuggest, most condescending asshole I have ever seen. And that's saying something.
If I were to face a congressional inquiry, I'd want Conyers on the case cuz then I could tell him to eat shit and die and be comfortable in the knowledge that Conyers would just fold like a cheap tent.
Is there a school that teaches nothing but doubletalk that I am not aware of? These people seem to speak it very well. It is amazing to me how they keep their stories straight. Oh, that's right, they don't!
Arrogance Has A New Name: David Addington
David Addington gave me the impression he was smart and everyone else lacked in superior insights. At some level, the president has insured him: "speak for me and you will be rewarded with all forgiveness."
Something is wrong about the way we go about getting to the facts. This administrations seems to think they have a "get out of the truth card." Is there any law that this administration will answer to? It is hard to get the information when you have place the information in a "box" that is labeled a national secret.
Now, we are just spinning our wheels by asking the same questions when we know we will get the same untruthful guarded answers. Enough is enough; for now we need to back up look at this situation, re-approach this topic with a sounder method for getting to the truth. As it stands, we are going nowhere.
Joseph
Forgive my ignorance, but now what? The way I see it, one can do one of three things when testifying before Congress: tell the truth, lie, or not answer the question. Lying gets you charged with perjury, but is there any penalty for not answering the question? There doesn't seem to be. Why is this?
If I had Conyers questioning me I would tell him anything he wanted to hear just to get the hell out of there. I don't know what is more annoying, the liars who sit there bald faced lying, or listening to Conyers drone. For me it is a tossup.
William @ 57:
My thought as well. Guess Alberto has been working after all.
Nadlers line of questioning to Yoo reveals that Mr. Yoo did not have any legal basis for his legal opinion defining torture. He states he had to dig further into legislative record to form an opinion as there never has been this debate. Time was then cut off, and there was no follow-up (that I'm aware of). This is a huge revelation. There must be some sort of follow-up to determine if there was any legal standing that this opinion can be supported by, if not, then the UN has to come in and pull the president, vice-president, secretary of state, Colin Powell, Paul Wolfowitz, and Donald Rumsfield out of their place of being to the hague on charges of crimes against humanity and violations of the Geneva Convention!
What an effin joke. I wrote to Conyers a few years ago and all I've ever gotten from him were requests for contributions. Like I would actually pay for this kind of representation.
Someone should send Yoo's info and mug shots to Interpol.
Yoo accidentally Freudian-slipped into the truth when he said:
"The purpose of the memo was to define 'torture' so that people would not commit torture."
That's precisely what this is all about. What Yoo left out was that the purpose of his memo was to RE-define "torture" so that anything the interrogators did short of murder, which would otherwise be considered "torture" under long-standing U.S. and international law to which the U.S. was a signatory, suddenly no longer would be considered "torture" based on a new memo. "Ridiculous" is too mild a word for what they did.
Jo @ 20:
Well, I see you've got it all figured out. Call off the discussion!
Hmmm makes you wonder what this government is capable of if they can't answer if Bush is allowed to have someone buried alive or not.
In all of human history, I don't ever recall any government or leadership figure publicly advocate the sexual torture of children to coerce the parents and relatives of the child. Theres a level of evil there that even the Nazis, Ghengis Khan, and the Roman Emperors didn't start to approach. And we all know the nasty SOB said it, its a matter of public record so why the charade of trying to get him to acknowledge having said it, thats just pointless and Conyers knows it. So the farce plays itself out.. I don't think anyone at these 'hearings' has any real intent of making it genuine or serious.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse, it doesn't matter what kind of dipshit faux-attorney you can drag out of a basement so you can point at him and say "He said it was legal! So I thought I was doing something that was ok!". Look hard enough and you can find corrupt and evil people who will agree that all atrocities are perfectly ethical and lawful. Does this mean that all laws no longer apply? Hell no.
What I'm interested in (besides his arrest and fair trial) is seeing Yoo put on the Sex Offenders Register. Would you trust him around children now we know how he would abuse his position of authority?
ahh yes well uhm you see uhm ahh well uhm
Where is a attention getting good base ball bat when you need one?
"If you witness a crime, call the police."
I just witnessed one. Addington and Yoo should never have been allowed to leave the capitol building.
Are the thugs in the GOP going to roll over when the Dems use the same loopholes next year?
booshies must have the pre-req classes Convoluted Explanation 101 and Evading Questions by Acting like a Dumbass even though I'm a Fucking Professor 101 in order to join the junta.
"They asked David Addington about torturing children too. His answer: “I don’t agree or disagree with it.” Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable."
No, you are wrong. It is very believable. Just as the defendants at Nuremberg were monsters, John Yoo and David Addington are monsters. I think we are experiencing the beginnings of the war crimes trials that are to come. These men are American war criminals who acted in the name of the American people. Let's hope that we, as Americans, bring them to justice rather than stare into air while others, who prove to be morally superior to us, do what we are too weak and spiritually bankrupt to do.
If the VP {Cheney's office} is NOT in the Executive branch, then WHY is Addington allowed to review all the documents of the EXECUTIVE BRANCH?
HB,
Actually is you listen to Yoo on burying a person alive, he says he "could never see the situation where a president would have to make that decision" which says that the decision IS the president's to make. Which goes to the heart of the question if he believes the president has the power to do that.
Unbelieveable.
I have a shovel and would be willing to bury him alive.
Remember this:
"Addington's work ethic and frugality; he takes Metro from his home in Alexandria instead of using his White House parking space."
From: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A22665-2004Oct10.html
There ya go.
Notice how often Yoo wants to hide behind the Justice Department. "I want to make it perfectly clear, it is the Justice Department that is claiming the privilege"
No, Mr. Yoo -- you are an individual. And as an individual, you need to be responsible for YOUR decisions.
I hope they hold you in contempt, Mr. Yoo. You belong in jail. And that's being generous.
Also:
"Addington was heavily involved in arguing that Congress was improperly tying the hands of the president by preventing him from helping Nicaragua's contras."
The folks at Boalt Hall must be really pleased with Professor Yoo.
Don't they have some kind of standard of conduct at U. C. Berkeley that addresses stonewalling a congressional hearing?
I hope that this will be a start for things to change. I'm glad Conyers did this. It made me sick that Yoo was still teaching at Cal while those memos were released.
“It’s Addington,” he said. “He doesn’t care about the Constitution.” Powell was referring to David S. Addington, Vice-President Cheney’s chief of staff and his longtime principal legal adviser. Powell’s office says that he does not recall making the statement. But his former top aide, Lawrence Wilkerson, confirms that he and Powell shared this opinion of Addington."

his wife is a real bitch
thanks for posting those vids to show everyone what a nut she is
conyers doesn't have any spine unless it's time to rough up anti war protesters - he probably lets his wife walk all over him like GW is walking over the Constitution
I'm a democrat, and I believe all of this should be investigated and then prosecuted, but this questioning isn't designed to learn anything or get any answers. This is a show, put on for the TV cameras. Conyers has been a leading voice in the Congress, but this questioning only exists for him to get a positive soundbite to peddle at home over the 4th of July holiday. If any of these politicians ever wanted real answers - first they would cut the speechifying they engage in at the beginning of hearings, and second they would shut the heck up and give the witnesses the chance to answer. This was nothing more than a live version of "Crossfire". You are all hurting America - do your jobs!
I couldn't think of a better time to bring back public executions. All these assholes should be hung outside on the Capital steps.
Scott @ 89:
Drawing and quartering makes it easier scavengers to get to the organs, return the carcasses to the "web of life" more quickly.
Conyers has his heart in the right place but we need Senators with the brains of a Chomsky and the journalistic skills of an Amy Goodman to interrogate these fascist war criminals, Americans like YOO and ADDINGTON have perpetrated a huge moral stain on America forever... they should be in prison for misleading the President that torture was legal under the Constitution..why the President decided to approve torture, even though he thought it was legal, I will never understand...yet perhaps if he was advised that it was illegal under the Consitution he would have held back a bit and saved this country horrible shame, not to mention the hundreds if not thousands of innocent people who have been tortured for every one legitimate terrorist...terrorists America created in the first place with its rampant imperialism! It is time true Americans, true patriots take back control of our country from these fascists! Republican = fascist!
That's what bothers me most about people like David Addington and John Yoo: namely they're cowards. Behind closed doors they probably think they're the smartest men in the room, yet drag them into the daylight, then they visibly shrivel, sometimes barely to form a coherent sentence under questioning.
Pathetic, and these guys actually think they can rule the world?
Please.
orcas @ 13:
And yet the idiots of Detroit will re-elect this chicken shit bucket of puke and I for one will vote as I always do -against all incumbents on my ballot. That is the only way that we'll ever have term limits for these cretins like Conyers!
bigironal @ 93:
Wow, such venom. While I don't think that that John Conyers is as nearly as effective as he could be in these situations (beginning the impeachment process would be the only way he could truly be redeemed in my eyes) I haven't yet seen anything that he's done or not done that calls for some of the name-calling going on here.
I mean, if this is the way we are supposed to treat people who are our allies it's no wonder we don't get what we need done, done.
Addington and Yoo truly are among the worst people in the world. They, and the people that give their positions, advice, and ideas traction are enemies of democracy and proponents of totalitarianism.
I don't think this was as ineffective as others. The point is not for Conyers to make himself look good, but to make Addington and Yoo look bad. Can anyone argue seriously that either scumbag came off looking good? Yoo, especially, has a reputation (such as it is) he wants to protect. I seriously doubt the administration at Berkely, nor Yoo's peers are thinking "gee we're glad he's one of us."
Proseuctions are probably not going to happen, and Conyers is unlikely to get admissions out of these skunks. What he can do is cause public shame to fall upon them.
Does anyone have a contact email address for the Board of Regents of the University of California, Berkeley, CA? I want to tell them to fire Yoo--he does not deserve to teach law (the website is too much of a maze for me). I think others should do the same.
It's time to crush someone's testicles to prevent him from procreating ever again.
Yoo is a faker academic. Professor is a fake title. He's a fucking war criminal. They used to hang guys like him.
Who in the hell at UC hired this coward, this scoundrel who doesn't have the balls to directly answer any question posed by the congressional committee? What a wimp!
Dam these muppets are so typical of the evil seed that has taken over the US .........
As a proud Michiganian, I am both appalled and ashamed that "Joke" Conyers represents our Great state.
When the second American revolution releases us from the grips of "corporate tyrrany," this asshole will go down as a traitor!
Make speeches on the house floor; act indignant, do nothing, and then collect your massive corporate checks from the people you really represent! Who do you think you are kidding? Dickhead!
Since you don't want to do your job, why don't you retire congressman? Do something positive for the people!
These two guys are modern Nazis.
Ship them off to The Hague and have the
World Court try them for 'crimes against humanity'
Their brains are just as twisted as that of Hermann Goering
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Hermann+Goering&btnG=Google+Search
"Based on the generalities of the questions directed at Yoo, and his refusal to respond to some of the more simpler queries, it appeared that Democratic committee members were unfamiliar with the contents of his book. He discussed, in far greater detail than his testimony Thursday, how he formed legal opinions on torture, his reasons for recommending that the White House ignore the Geneva Conventions, and warrantless wiretaps."
Bush even made reference to Yoo's book...
"On Feb. 7, 2002, President Bush sent a memo to Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, Chief of Staff Andrew Card, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, CIA Director George Tenet, Attorney General John Ashcroft, General Richard Myers, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which said, according to Yoo’s book, “the Geneva Conventions only applied to conflicts involving states fighting with regular armed forces.”
“However,” Bush wrote in the memo, according to Yoo, “the war on terrorism ushered in a new paradigm, one in which groups with broad, international reach commit horrific crimes against innocent civilians, sometimes with the direct support of states. [President Bush] accepted that he could suspend the Conventions with regard to Afghanistan, but decided not to. Instead, he found that the Taliban were “unlawful combatants”...[and] also found that common article 3 applied only to an “armed conflict not of an international character,” and hence neither to the war with al-Qaeda nor the Taliban.”

Conyers and the rest of the committee should be taken to task for the line of questioning they conducted.

i know i'm late to the game on this one, but i gotta say, wtf up with conyers? hey, i don't like yoo or addington's theories any more than the next guy. but man, can conyers just shut the f up for one second? i would actually have liked to hear what either would have to say -- they are both utterly unashamed of what they believe anyway, so why not let them speak?
i like dogged questioning, especially in this context. but that's not dogged questioning. that's just grumpy old man grandstanding.
