Tom Tomorrow: The Awesomely Non-Racist Republicans

Click here for the full strip from Salon.

Tom Tomorrow sets the tree-hugging libs straight. He points out how people in civilized society are so quick to judge those on the right as being racist, when in fact, they're just misunderstood. /snark off

I hope Americans realize they are only 1/2 step from being segregationists. Which is only 1/2 step from being slave owners. So we are only one step away from the slave owning nation we started as.

i personally felt that the comparison between katrina and the midwest floods was nothing short of ridiculous.......was it racists......i don't know .....do they want us to think they meant it to be racists.......i don't know......i don't listen to extreme right wing radio propaganda bull shxt

Another great cartoon from Tom Tomorrow. While I think that just mentioning someone's race is not racist in and of itself, Fox and the right's antics are undeniably racist in that they emphasize it to make the Obamas look like outsiders. Non-whites, if you will.

Midwesterners, like Katrina victims, are probably wondering why they have to help themselves when their tax dollars are going to help the super rich, corporate welfare, big oil profits, and Halliburton's no-bid government contracts.

Slightly OT but in a similar vein, outraged (stroke prone) conservatives getting their panties in a twist over the letter 'WTF' on license plates.

RALEIGH, N.C. - Thanks to some text message-savvy grandchildren, North Carolina drivers whose license plates have the potentially offensive “WTF” letter combination can replace the tags for free.

A 60-year-old technology teacher from Fayetteville complained about the plate last July after her teenage grandchildren clued her in.

These people are outrages in a constant search for things to be outraged about.

...and they are probably also wondering why George Bush and Dick Cheney have their national guardsmen off fighting an oil war based on lies instead of at home helping them with floods.

but things like racism towards powerless peoples, poverty, ghettoizing populations, and endless war on foreign peoples, are not things the conservatives get upset about.

This racist agenda road that the Republicans have decided to ride on was implemented by Richard Nixon with his Southern Strategy agenda. These I believe are most of their base. The super rich and the bigots.

Re-Piglics - White, male, doughy, racist, misogynistic homophobes.

Good point! It irks me to no end when people construe expecting help from YOUR government that YOU support with YOUR tax dollars when struck by a major disaster that destroys your livelihood is simply "whining" or being "dependent." Apparently when people who actually need help get govt. $, it's all about whining and lacking the right amount of "self-sufficiency." They love to spout this crap especially when the victim of a disaster is poor b/c it already fits the stereotype...why don't we see this kind of feigned outrage when the govt. help rebuild multi-million dollar homes for executives and movie stars in Malibu after they get burned to the ground every ten or so years? (rhetorical question).

We might want to consider letting the south go this time around . . . .

again this is not always.......but often a linguistic trap....the gop/NEOCONS use linguistic strategy at all times now. they use a cause and effect method (if you will).....will say this and this is the response we wil get......if we don't ge thte response we want this is how we will spin it. this is very effective for them
first of all proven to work and is very efective against at least the progressive/liberals i know/speak to we have a tendency to be grey area thinkers vs. black and white thinkers. the gop keeps it simple stupid....

The essence of the Nixonian "southern strategy" is race baiting. Fear of the uppity N__, he's taking your job, your daughters, ad nauseum. This is their strategy for the last forty years, just a little dicier since one of "them" is actually running.

I used to give the average Republican the benefit of the doubt - they're not all bad, just misinformed, whatever.

Not anymore.

Anyone who can listen to the shit these "Conservative Icons" spew and keep coming back for more is a fucking racist. Every last one of them.

Conservative = Bigot. Period.

Fuck them all.

agreed

Conservative = mental illness = lack of compassion for others masked by bible thumping, and reasons why others are not like us.

Faux orifices are perfects example of Conservative mental illness in frothing mouth action.

'damn them FSM, they do know what they do'

Imagine how the right wing media would go to town had it been Michelle Obama and not lily white heiress Cindy McCain who had stolen from her own charity to support her drug habit. Somehow, I think that would be front page news.

It makes me despair sometimes to read such narrow-minded condemnation of conservatives, many of whom aren't that ideologically removed from liberals, and who feel vastly betrayed by Bush and others they supported, only to find themselves as stabbed in the back as all the rest of us.

To label ALL conservatives under one sweeping generalization only serves to bolster the right-wing conception that the left are as viciously polarized as we claim the right to be. It is the same fallacy that has been used against Muslims - the terrorists were Muslim, therefore all Muslims are potential terrorists - to justify the abrogation of the civil rights of everyone.

This country is not going to take itself back from the neo-Cons who have perverted the Constitution or the integrity of America without cooperation - tacit or otherwise - between the left and the right. You serve no good purpose to smear everyone on the right as sociopaths or mentally ill. You do not speak for me by claiming the moral high ground as the sole property of the left.

Ah, so we can be tribal, too? Then let's bring back that lovely little idea that the early progressives had: eugenics. After all, such paragons of the left as Oliver Wendell Holmes thought sterilizing the mentally ill was a fine thing to do. Why don't we simply go the whole hog with this tribalism instead of half-assing it?

Tom Tomorrow, Dan Perkins, grew up in Iowa City, one of the flooded Midwestern cities.

Every conservative republican I know ia a racist. Especially Farmers.

Aw, come-on Nonny, you know ALL conservatives suck!

It's easy to pick bigots out; they immediately take a defensive posture (even when it’s just a room full of us white people). The conversation turns to race and these clowns will take any attempt to see racism from the other sides perspective as a personal attack they feel they must defend. For example mention how slavery is a scar on American history, the typical response is “well no one in my family tree was a part of that” even though no one suggested it. The conversation is usually uncomfortably downhill from there.

Talk about a defensive posture, VegasRage; that "if they claim to be innocent they must be guilty" routine is straight out of Senator McCarthy's playbook, and Tom Tomorrow's as well. Tom-Tom bends himself over until his back snaps to depict anyone who isn't swilling the change-flavored Kool-Aid as a racist.

There's nothing new about that, mind you; it's been a popular theme for months now, and everyone probably has known at least one clown who plays the race card with headspinning speed every single time he doesn't get his way. But Tom-Tom has to work to disguise it, because, I suppose, even he understands on some level how openly ludicrous it is. So the best defensive posture is a good offensive posture: These people don't worship The Messiah! They are racist! (...Ergo, anyone who doesn't worship The Messiah is racist! Proven!)

Lord knows I hate Ted Rall, but at least he (unlike Tom-Tom) has the guts to be completely open and honest with his venom.

"Progressives:" about as liberal and progressive as neo-conservatives are conservative.

Tell 'em it stands for What [Would] Tesus Fo?

How is this any different than MSNBC accusing the Clintons of 'pimping' out Chelsea?
