C&L's Late Nite Music Club with General Public

My brother and sisters and I are inveterate listmakers with each other. Think of it as one endless High Fidelity Top 5 email chain--favorite movies, childhood memories, places to go on vacation, beaches, Broadway shows, books, etc. You name it, we've probably exchanged lists on it. I'm usually the spoilsport who says that I can't possibly narrow things down to just 5. My youngest sister started the Top 5 80's hit songs list, and once again, I complained how hard it was to narrow it down. But I buckled down and picked them. In no particular order, here are my 5:

Tenderness-General Public, In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel, Every Day I Write The Book - Elvis Costello, Steppin' Out - Joe Jackson and Graceland - Paul Simon.

There's at least 20 others I could have added in their place, but 20 years + later (sigh!) I will still stop and listen to each one of these songs and still love them as much.

So what's your 5?

Bankers Use Secret Clinics, Nurses to Beat Breakdowns (Update1)

By Thomas Penny

Excerpt:

July 11 (Bloomberg) -- On a private island 20 minutes by helicopter from central London, a hovercraft sits on the lawn of a turreted Edwardian manor house as swallows swoop around.

Trees and wildflowers line a lane that leads to a cluster of buildings that house a pool table, a 12-seat movie theater and an art studio. A yacht is moored nearby.

The island isn't a country hideaway. It's the Causeway Retreat, a mental health and addiction center that charges as much as 10,000 pounds ($20,000) a week for treatment away from the prying eyes of colleagues and the media. There is a waiting list for the facility's 15 rooms.

``We get lots of CEOs of companies, traders, high-end business guys,'' says Managing Director Brendan Quinn. ``They want treatment, but they want it to be discreet.''

Financial services firms in the U.K. are trying to break the stigma of mental illness as the number of people seeking help increases. JPMorgan Cazenove Ltd. and Herbert Smith LLP sponsored a conference yesterday where employers were urged to do more to help workers with psychological problems and recognize they can still be productive.

Mental health is a growing concern as the credit crunch adds to stress in the City of London, the U.K. capital's financial district. The number of men in the City who sought help for depression and stress rose 47 percent from a year earlier in the past three months, according to British United Provident Association Ltd., the U.K.'s largest private health insurer.

Busy Summer

About 40,000 people in the U.K. financial industry will lose their jobs during the next three years, according to Experian Group Ltd, with London bearing the brunt.

``I'm getting three times as many referrals as I was a year ago, particularly from the corporate sector, and a lot of that's related to the financial crisis,'' says Bennedict Cannon, a London psychotherapist. ``This has been the busiest early summer I've known in 10 years.''

Don Serratt, chief executive officer of Lifeworks, a private treatment facility set in the countryside at Old Woking, southwest of London, says he saw a 20 percent increase in admissions of City workers in the first six months of the year compared with the same period in 2007.

``What happens in these environments becomes so unbearable when times are bad because everyone's really frightened that they're next and they're going to lose their job,'' says Serratt, who was the London-based head of European mergers and acquisitions for Creditanstalt Bank until 1998. He quit after a battle with addictions and severe clinical depression, which he says were exacerbated by the City's environment.

Unhappiness Index

Even in a world of six-figure salaries, bankers report an atmosphere of unhappiness.

Too many great songs to choose from. I love hearing them all again, but thought you all could

KLF - Moo Moo Land
Shamen - Boss Drum

No way I could narrow down to five. I had enough trouble narrowing down to ten! In no particular order:

XTC: Dear God

The The: Armageddon Days Are Here (Again)

Shriekback: This Big Hush

The Replacements: Here Comes a Regular

Propaganda: The Murder of Love

New Order: All Day Long

Kate Bush: Running Up That Hill

Echo & the Bunnymen: Bring On the Dancing Horses

Clan of Xymox: Stumble and Fall

The Church: Under the Milky Way

Well, OK....

Peter Gabriel. YES!!!! but Solsbury Hill. Classic. In Your Eyes is much too inspirational for the cynic in me.

Peter Frampton. Do You Feel Like We Do? for no reason whatsoever.

R.E.M. This one goes out to the one I love. Possibly the most cynical love song ever

And just so that I don't leave everyone depressed, a great Simon and Garfunkel, Benedictus, tho for my taste, Sparrow is more heartfelt

RAlphie V's picture

XTC - Generals and Majors
Lords of the New Church - Open Your Eyes
The Jam - That's Entertainment

Peter Gabriel - Games Without Frontiers (Jeux Sans Frontiere)

Wow, so many people here into 80s Post-Modern.

So, was this a list of "the best five 80s songs" according to you, or according to popular measure? Obviously, two different things.

Anyway, I'd pick:
1. a-ha -- Take on Me
2. ABC -- The Look of Love
3. Human League -- Don't You Want Me?
4. Toto -- Africa
5. Duran Duran -- Hungry Like the Wolf

But I agree, this was very, very hard, and I had to fight my instinct to make this a top 10.

The Dude Abides's picture

Peter Gabriel - Biko (the song that got me interested in politics)
Peter Gabriel - San Jacinto
U2............. - Where the Streets Have No Name
U2............. - Pride
REM............- Fall on Me

But if we're only talking about singles that got radio airplay, I would replace the two Gabriel songs with "Games Without Frontiers" and "In Your Eyes." After all, Genesis is great but Gabriel is God.

My favorite line from any song in the 80's is from "Love Will Find A Way":

"Here is my heart
Waiting for you
Here is my soul
I eat at chez nous"

Great band though, usually always.

The Top 5 80’s hit songs? To steal a line from Jon Stewart; "Congratulations on being the skinniest kid at fat camp." As someone who suffered through 80's music, I must say that, with the exception of musicians like Stevie Ray Vauhgn, the 80's "hit parade" was the worst since the early 60s pre-Beetles era.

Aaaragh! original comment disappeared because of stupid fingers.

It will be more than 5, but...

"Volcano for Hire", Weather Report (drumming is unbelievable)
"Gaucho" or "My Rival", Steely Dan
Joe Jackson, hard to choose between "Cancer", "Real Men" and "Jumpin' Jive"
"I confess" or "Jeanette", English Beat
"Budapest by Blimp", Thomas Dolby
"Stop Making Sense" the video, Talking Heads, the live versions rocked!
"Amerika/Funky Chicken", Jaco Pastorius

honorable mention
"Sharp-dressed Man", ZZ Top
"Graceland" the album, Paul Simon for opening America's ears to world music
Lou Reed had many, especially the "New Sensations" album
"Light Years" and "Children's Songs", Chick Corea

The first ones listed were cassettes I made I actually wore out and had to rerecord for use in my auto shop. I wore a Yamaguchi recording of "Bell Ringing in an Empty Sky" but who other than me listens to that when rebuilding engines?

The 80s underground brought back the diy ethic for the 90s and on. Too much good music to pick just five songs, let alone albums, bands, or even genres.
Alien Sex Fiend: Acid Bath: New Christian Music ep
Black Flag: Damaged: Depression The invention of hardcore and real innovation in hard music, marketing of music, and extreme living
Cocteau Twins: Head over Heels or Victorialand: music that didn't even have real words but capable of transporting the listener to ....space? Greenland?
Smiths: anything: sad lyrics plus happy music fit the bipolar decade of Thatcher/Reagan vs. the reality of the destruction of blue collar manufacturing work in the West.
Specials: Free Nelson Mandela or Ghost town

I think you nailed it. At least two of those songs never got the airplay they deserved.

Came up with four, then would have to think about it a while.

Relax- Frankie Goes to Hollywood
In the Air Tonight- Phil Collins (OK there are personal connections to that one)
Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears for Fears
She Blinded Me With Science- Thomas Dolby

But I guess I'll add "our song" for number five:
Making Love out of Nothing at All- Air Supply

Have a good rest of the weekend, all.

The horror.

I'm a child of the 80s. It's when I discovered music and shaped my musical taste...perhaps a dubious distinction in this regard.

My favs:
* Talk Talk - "It's My Life" (A beautiful synth song, more emotional than No Doubt's cover)
* Gary Numan - "Cars" (Technically a 1979 song, but very influential for post-punk and future Goth. Love the fat sound of the analog Moog synth!)
* Kraftwerk - "The Model" (Technically released in 1978, but it was re-released somewhere around 1981 and became a hit. Again, very influential)
* A Flock of Seagulls - "I Ran" (Yeah, I know. But I love this sound. Unmistakably 1980s!)
* Blondie - "Rapture" (Not the first rap song, but the first rap song that went mainstream, and the first song I fell in love with.)

Other notables:
* U2 - "Pride (In the Name of Love)," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "New Years Day" (These songs were a wake-up call that shaped my political views. Lots of passion in those songs.)
* Roxy Music - "More or Less" (Not the ideal Roxy Music tune, but very beautiful.)
* Anything from The Police's Synchronicity album
