Sunday Morning Bobblehead Thread
By Nicole Belle Saturday Jul 12, 2008 7:00am
"Why are you a Democrat?" contest for the Democratic National Convention. Or if you're feeling a bit mischievous, there's always the "Why are you a Republican?" contest too.
This morning looks like concern troll heaven. We have oilman and Bushie supporter T. Boone Pickens on FOXNews Sunday to promote his alternative energy program, Cahleefornya's Governator Arnold Schwarzeneggar on This Week, reportedly to blast the man he endorsed in 2004, George W. Bush, for not taking Global Climate Change seriously, McCain surrogate Carly Fiorina on Meet the Press to tell us how McSame cares about the women and the economy--really, along with the ultimate concern troll, DLC chair Harold Ford, no doubt to assure us that Obama's tack to the center is EXACTLY the right tactic to win him votes from the MaverickMan.
ABC's "This Week" - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, R-Calif.
CBS' "Face the Nation" - Israeli Ambassador Sallai Meridor; Sens. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and Richard Lugar, R-Ind.
NBC's "Meet the Press" - Carly Fiorina, adviser to John McCain; Sen. Claire Mccaskill, D-Mo.; Republican strategist Mike Murphy; Harold Ford Jr., chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council.
CNN's "Late Edition" - Sens. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., and Chris Dodd, D-Conn.; Govs. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., and Janet Napolitano, D-Ariz.; Nancy Pfotenhauer, adviser to McCain; Jason Furman, adviser to Barack Obama; Iraqi national security adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie.
"Fox News Sunday" - T. Boone Pickens, chairman of the energy investment fund BP Capital and creator of an alternative energy plan.
"The Chris Matthews Show" - Panel: Dan Rather, Kelly O'Donnell, Cynthia Tucker, Howard Fineman. Topics: Can Barack Obama really expand the electoral map? Is McCain's staff shakeup a bad omen for November?
So what's catching your eye this morning?

What, no Joe Lie-berman?
Harold Ford: the most useless "Democrat" around. Makes all the Repugs talking points. Bogus air of gravitas.
I wonder if Carly is prepared to address McCain's abysmal voting record on women's issues, especially his vote against insurance coverage for female contraceptives. More importantly, I wonder if the media will ever admit there's something cognitively amiss with McCain. My mother's cardiologist told me last week he believes there's a problem. Okay, he's a heart and not a head doc, but if he believes something's seriously wrong with McCain's brain, that's good enough for me.
It doesn't matter what THEY say, the facts still remain. The election of a president Obama will, in particular, have a transformative effect on the rest of the planet. There are basically two stereotypes out there about America, one positive and one negative. The first is of America as Goliath, the big bully getting its way around the world through the ruthless and muscular pursuit of its national interests (interests usually seen as very narrowly conceived). The other is of America as the Land of Dreams, the Land of Hope and Opportunity, where anybody can be anything, where anyone can earn anything, and anyone can transform their lives in ways their parents could never have imagined.
Ever since 9/11, the world has only seen the first stereotype; at least that's the one that has been reinforced in people's imaginations around the world by the Iraq invasion, Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, torture, rendition, Blackwater's killings of Iraqi civilians, and so on. The election of a black 46-year-old first-term Senator, the son of an African immigrant, one bearing a Muslim name and who has lived in the Third World, would instantly dispel that stereotype and reinforce the second. Because he would be the living embodiment of the miraculous truth of the second stereotype, it would make America once more, in the world's eyes, the shining beacon of light upon a hill that Ronald Reagan spoke of, a country unlike any other.
On the other hand, a defeat for Obama in what is widely seen as a Democratic year will lead a lot of people of colour around the world to see Americans as more fundamentally racist than they pretend to be. For America's sake, i hope it doesn't work out that way.
And now, I read yesterday that that the foreign voters may have a problem with the recognition of their absentee votes. Will the Crooks and Liars steal this vote also?

Bush Homeland Security Aide Caught On Tape Offering High-Level Access For Donations To Bush Library...
The Sunday Times reports Stephen Payne, a Bush pioneer and a political appointee to the Homeland Security Advisory Council, was caught on tape offering access to key members of the Bush administration inner circle in exchange for “six-figure donations to the private library being set up to commemorate Bush’s presidency.

Here's some suggestions for answers to the "Why are you a republican?" contest you mentioned Nicole:
Q: Why are you a republican?
A: Because it's easier than thinking for myself.
A: Because Jesus wears an American flag lapel pin.
A: Because gays in the military take the dignity out of killing (h.t. to "askarepublican.com")
A: That little kid in the Bruce Willis movie sees dead people; I see stem cells.
A: Because the Constitution is for pussies.
A: Because the Democrats for the most part have zero testicular fortitude (O.K. That one's true).
A: Because the only good immigrant is the one cleaning my pool.
A: Because I might have to vote for a woman or a black man for president otherwise.
A: Because I love that other people's kids die for my right to call anyone who disagrees with me unpatriotic.
A: Because the terrorists want to sue the telecomms.
A: Because unless you plan on marrying him, little boy sex ROCKS.
A: Because nothing keeps you warm at night like being tightly wrapped up in the American flag while burning the Bill of Rights.
Those are just the ones I came up with off the top of my head.
Face the Nation actually looks to be the most interesting this Sunday, which is quite rare lately.
Pickens on Fox is a slight surprise... only because with the passing of Snow, I'd expect a "Russert-like" memorial episode, not because having the life-long Conservative Mr. Pickens on Fox is any surprise.

Social Security. Everybody talks about fixing it. Somehow. But before I fix anything I'd like to know what's wrong with it first. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, it's going "broke". But how can an agency that has consistently taken in more money than it pays out over the years be going broke?
So I propose a challenge to all of the C&L'ers: Is there anybody out there who can do the following:
1) Provide the current financial status of the Soc. Sec. Admin. — taxes paid in vs. benefits paid out including the disposition of "extra" funds, as in, where did they go, and...
2) Historical perspective of the S.S.A. and its handling of the tax revenues they receive.
I ask because I've heard too many tales about the SSA and I'd like to get some authoritative data as opposed to the emotional gobbledygook that travels around the web.
Thanks.
Rush is talking on Fox News, 7:55 AM CT.
It's quite a rant.

It's going broke because the government can't keep their hands off of it. They keep "borrowing" from in for their
Emergenciesprivate wars.Bob,
I have also read a story (I believe by Greg Palast) stating that unless your absentee ballot comes from an overseas military base, there is 0% chance of it getting counted. The military still tends to vote more republican the Democratic, so they keep the APO return address ones.
The story showed that ex-Pats tend to be more liberal, therefore their votes don't count.
I may have read it in one of Palast's books. I'm pretty sure Greg Palast was the source however.
Tony Snow dead at 53!
Thanks, Bob @ 15. That's exactly the emotional crap about SSA that I was referring to. But, to play along with you, answer these questions:
- How does the government get their hands on 'it"?
- How do they "borrow" the money?
This is an important issue. Most Americans have no clue how this going down, and I mean EXACTLY how this is going down. Can we educate here?
Thanks.
☻..Bangkok Bob..☻
You are very welcome. Now I wonder if Chimpy will tell us that Stephen Payne doesn’t speak for him, just like McSame says about Phil Gramm not speaking for him?
Tim in Japan @ 16:
Your correct on the fact that Ex-Pats tend to be more liberal. Most republicans I talk to back in the US never leave the country and have no idea that the standard of living in many countries is actually better than that in the US. The progressive mindset allows for open-minded travel and the discussion of new ideas, not the drivel that is pumped out on US media.
jakflorida32169 @ 18:
Government Borrowing from SSA
Looking at the crop of current democrats in office, I'd say a new list is in order. You can start with this one;
I want to be part of a party that in principle says they're for upholding the Constitutional rights of individual Americans, but eventually caves in to republicans because, well... thats where the money is. No one ever got rich on principles.

And I don't think any of them know how far the U.S. dollar goes in Bangkok (by the way, my shade of envy is "forest" green)!
Having been to Bangkok and having lived a stone's throw away from Tokyo, I'd take Bangkok 6 days a week and twice on Sundays!
Looks like FnS is doing a memorial show after all.
poor Claire Mccaskill surrounded by two hostiles and one fool, she will have her work cut out for her.
Thanks, Bob @ 21. Interesting link but doesn't answer my original challenge.
Tim in Japan @ 24:
Tim, I actually live in Chiang Mai (up north). Bangkoks air became too bad for me and is too large for my taste now. Chiang Mai is more central and has everything I need and i can train to almost anywhere from here except Laos (short flight) We've taken a hit with the devalue of the USD, used to be almost 40 baht per dollar, now down around 32 bht. but still, I can live well on less that $1500 per month (rent, meals and booze) so not to bad, especially compared to Japan. You must be working there. What are the feelings their towards this administration?
jakflorida32169 @ 27:
Google "how the government borrows from ssa" You'll get more hits than you can possibly need.
I couldn't help but yell at the screen when Dean asked "Why are you a democrat" - I yelled "Because I keep hoping you people will stand up to the Republican criminals in our White House!"
I am a Democrat because I would never support invading an unarmed nation for profit, I would never support torture for any reason and I would never want the leaders of America to shred the constitution. However the Democratic party doesn't seem to have much of a problem with any of these points or they would have done something about it. Sure there are a few Dems who have balls, but not nearly enough, and what kills me is they had the support of 70% of the nation behind them to Impeach, it investigate and to imprision the criminals who now occupy OUR White House!
Where's Joe Lieberman? Oh yeah, Harold Ford - never mind.

Bob,
My close friend went to Chiang Mai for a Navy exercise. He RAVED about it. Again, my jealousy knows no bounds but...mai pen rai krop (been waiting to bust that one out on you).
bush is NOT liked in Japan. The people here are pissed that the self defense force basically broke their Constitutional law in order to support the U.S. in the GWOT (my answer to them is normally, "welcome to my world").
They also don't like that the U.S. is putting a nuclear aircraft carrier in Japan (that one's not bush's fault however).
Then there's the gas prices... 180 yen a liter.
The support the Japanese citizenry showed after 9/11 actually brought me to tears. However, that support dried up quick, fast and in a hurry when we invaded Iraq with no provocation.
They are also pissed about the U.S. trying to force beef imports on them.
Long story short, they think of bush as a bully who expects Japan to say "how high" and "thank you for the privilege of serving you" whenever bush comes around asking favors.
Also, there have been a lot of high profile crimes committed by the military here and so the U.S. military presence is a real touchy subject of late. It's known and understood that under bush, military recruitment standards have dropped and that homesteading overseas is no longer allowed so the majority of military people rotate in and out far more quickly and never learn the culture or language here.
Our reputation in the military towns has really taken a hit.
In summary...the average Japanese person is acutely aware that george bush sucks ass.
Bob,
How do the Thai view bush?
Screwtape the Epistemologist @ 34:
When you know you've done wrong, you look in every crevice for a way to be "forgiven". Only a few ever figure it out that Forgiveness is spelled T R U T H.
Bob,
Oh yeah. And bush's daddy blew chunks all over the former prime minister.
Patently uncool.
"They Seek Him Here (SP song video)" Rove hehehe
I sense a Rove movie soon, move over Lecter, Rove is stealing your limelight
A couple of times, FnS played part of Snow's tearful comments on FnS after 9/11.
I just keeping thinking back to all the Conservatives that attacked Jon Stewart for his tearful address after 9/11.
Tim in Japan @ 36:
Like a fool. Everyone here that I know is hoping for change, and most want the change to be B Obama. It's almost like waiting through the last of a rotten movie just so you can be there for the good one to begin. I found that also in Bali and in North Island New Zealand.
Bush is Hongnam utinai (in the toilet.)
☻..Bangkok Bob..☻ @ 37:
The heinous haloed smiler Tony Blair was supposed to be the middle east peace miracle worker when he left #11 Downing street,
he just vanished to places unknown and avoids exposure to the worlds press.
Its like he dropped off the face of the world, behavior for an ex prime minister and public figure that is totally radical.
Google for Tony and nothing modern, aprt from that one overpriced speech he did.
ferrofluid (Obama 08) @ 42:
Blair is England embarrassment, Bush is ours, Snow only mouthed the words of the bush administration (meaning he had to lie a lot while facing death) No wonder he quit..
Keep opening your yap, Carly. You will bury McT-Rex by yourself.
☻..Bangkok Bob..☻ @ 41:
First of all, thanks for noticing my linguistic efforts.
Secondly, Obama is BY FAR the preferred candidate among the Japanese. In all fairness to Sen. McCain, it doesn't hurt Sen. Obama that there is a city in Japan named, Obama.
Again, I'm really jealous of you, Bob. I loved Thailand so much when I went there in the Navy. The ship always pulled into Pattaya, but I jetted for Bangkok every time and was able to see and experience so much. What a beautiful culture. The imperial palace was simply amazing. Also, smoking a cigar and drinking cognac at the Bangkok Oriental was truly surreal. I felt like Somerset Vaughn!
What I wouldn't do to join you in "the land of smiles."
Eh....that would be Somerset Maughan.
Someone's had a drinkie-poo or 6 and he's wearing my underwear!
Tim in Japan @ 45:
Great!! the Bamboo lounge at the Oriental. My favorite place in Bangkok. I have spent many many hours sitting at the table close to the piano there. Thanks for reminding me.
With that I'll have to say sawat dee krahp.
I have a doctors appt. nice meeting you fellow Ex-Pat.
Fiorina says McCain can balance the budget by growing the economy "by 3 or 4 percent". ThinkProgress calculated that to do so, he'd have to grow the economy by and almost precidented 8% a year for five years.
What a line up! Makes me glad that we ditched the teevee!
Fiorina keeps saying: "I'm a business person." I'm sure a lot of HP employees are cursing their TVs.
BTW, if McCain will be such a great prez, why couldn't he beat Dumdum in 2000?
☻..Bangkok Bob..☻ @ 47:

Here's hoping our paths cross some day.
Cheers.
i was watching the talk shows this morning trying to find some truth ,and found exactly what i allways do! none! barack obama the candidate of change? where is the change? hes for every bad repig program they want , staying in iraq, sending more cannon fodder to afganistan to expand the meat grinder there, giveing israel everything they need to steal other countrys lands and destroy the other countrys women and children , kinda like condy rice , more agression against iran and keeping nukes on the table if he feels like finnishing bushes the final sollutions of the busg bums, votes for the patriot act , more money for war, loves him some fisa votes to keep spying on you, says he wont go after the bush criminals unless he is tols they commited crimes by some future ag he will appoint , why cant he see crimes have been commited? because he believes every lie the bush gang told us, the list of his sellouts endless , sorry i dont call this man change seems to me like bush cheny mccain obama are more closer then twins born ajoined at the head with one brain!
On Face the Nation, host Scheiffer mentioned that "reports from Washington suggest troop reductions from Iraq in advance of the election."
Yeah, they need to shift troops out of Iraq - send them temporarily to Afghanistan to look like that place is important - before using them in Iran.
VietVet67 @ 50:
yes thats a big Republican puzzle, the reject of 2000 is the golden boy of 2008 !
could it just have been one monstrous Rovian practical joke before he fled the country ?
On FtN, Scheiffer asked Bush's councilor Ed Gillespie about "bringing troops home from Iraq before the election". Scheiffer also pointed out earlier that the Commander in Afghanistan said "he needs more troops" but can't get them because they are in Iraq.
Rodger Simon, on FtN, says the Bush Administration may try to draw down troops from Iraq "to help McCain".
How does that "help McCain"??? McCain has been saying we CAN'T pull out of Iraq and that doing so "when we are on the verge of victory" would be irresponsible, whereas it has been Obama who has been saying all along we can withdraw troops from Iraq without the situation in Iraq dissolving.
So again, I ask, "Who would a November draw-down help?"
I strongly recommend you read Frank Rich's column in today's NY Times (link to follow) and then my thoughts on it. Read more...http://www.tagg-lines.com/2008/07/from-andersonville-to-nuremberg-to-abu.html
"So what’s catching your eye this morning?"
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25657023
U.S., Iraq scale down negotiations over forces
In other words, the Bush administration has failed to secure Iraq as the location of a longterm US military presence in the Middle East.
Arnie is more than a tad critical of the Bush Administration's reaction to Global Warming.
Says it is "better" that Bush didn't agree to anything at this last G8 because now they can leave office with a perfect record" of not believing in Global Warming. :)
OMG. Arnold praised Carter's energy policy, then criticized Reagan for scrapping it. :)
Saint Ronnie's wings just fell off.
George Step: "If he (Obama) we President, would you take his call?"
Arnold: "I'd take his call now; I'd take his call when he's President".
No "if". Interesting.
Sounds like a rally for party pride. Whatever...they're both worthless. It's time to start getting away from the two-party system. Hell, it's time for another Constitutional Convention.
God I hate Tom Brokaw, George Stepenopolis, and Bob Schiefer. Just hate them.
THANK YOU...Tim in Japan...have your "list" copied...it's brilliant and actually an answer to WHY AM I A DEMOCRAT...(cause otherwise I'd have to believe that crap)...
I'm sure we'll all be wanting to vote for the best "Why are you a Republican" video. (This could be fun.)
I've been noticing Arnold has been upping his profile lately.
That scares me.
If they start that "let's change the constitution so that Arn...foreigners can run for president" you'll know it's time to get the passport up to date. Since Jeb is likely going to be toxic for the next couple of election cycles, he could be the next puppet.
Just to be sure, he couldn't be McCain's VP nominee could he?
Could he?!?!?!?!
"why are you a republican" and "why are you a democrat" ???
what is this, high school spirit week? are we all going to dress up like nerds now?
remember a couple weeks ago when John McCain offered "points" to post his talking points on left wing sites?
Howard Dean sez "post your opinion on youtube and we just might play it at the DNC!!" - haha, its just not that much different.
The This Week panel seems to agree an Iraq draw-down helps Obama more than McCain.
Even George Will says "the success in Basra is due to the British withdraw, forcing the Iraqi's to stand up for themselves, which has been Obama's position."
I hate to say it, but Brokaw did a pretty good job grilling Fiorina on McCains flip-flops this morning. Much better than his "good friend" would have done. In fact, that may be the first time I have heard anybody from the MSM recite a list of some of McSames wind twisting (outside of Countdown). He also refused to let her re-hash talking points and got her pretty good on Gramm's stupidity. When they announced that he would be taking over MTP until the exection, I thought he would just be another stooge for the repugs...but I guess he may have some scrupples left after all.
I don't know why am I Democrat? It's certainly not because they have stood up to the Neonut's. Hey what were the Midterm elections about again. Let's all have Sponge Bob and Patrick moment uuuuh duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh I forGOT.
WHAT DID I DO ON MY SUMMER VACATION why thanks Howard -- lets keep this debate at the 8th grade reading level ----- when and if my left hand makes my rignt hand vote for that obama --- it will not be the likes of howard or donna that got me there --- I have a great deal of anger and shame at what was my democratic party -- obama not so much -- I mean who is he? His only real record is held in words that matter in his various speeches and interviews. And as we have seen in the last three weeks --- his inartful shift to the right is painful and and troubling. Who here on C&L can predict what the man will do once he holds power. The FISA vote gives away so much, before a single hearing to find out what the fuck happened and how far and wide spread Bushy and Chyeeney pushed the nation to oblivion. For me this is worse than Ford pardoning Nixon before the facts were known. GOTTA SPARE THE NATION FROM ALL THOSE PESKY FACTS..........we democrats have NO control over the Democratic Party and the party has no control over Axelrod/obama..................we're just along for the ride
Check out Gov. Mark Sandord (R) stammer answering the difference between Bush and McCain on the economy. It's priceless!
I mean on Late Edition w/ Wolfie
DLC chair Harold Ford, no doubt to assure us that Obama’s tack to the center is EXACTLY the right tactic to win him votes from the MaverickMan.
Should read:
DLC chair Harold Ford, no doubt to assure us that Obama’s tack to the right is EXACTLY the right tactic to win him votes from the MaverickMan.
Why? Because the policies of reducing our civil rights, supporting Israel's expanding settlements on occupied land, and continuing belicose foreign policy are not policies of the center, as the media keeps portraying, and even this site doesn't challenge.

And there sat George Will agreeing with Phil Gramm on this country being a 'nation of whiners'. sorry, Georgie ol boy, you elitist and snobbish country club member you, but who are you to even begin to know the everyday struggles of the average American middle class family who can barely make ends meet!!! Hmm, sorry Willie G, didn't get that. some excuse you just made, what? you have no answer because Phil and you and McCain are wrong. regular folks dont have time to 'whine' or think their struggles are 'mental', they have barely enough time to live and breathe and eat and pay bills and take care of kids and households and all that. but the real 'whiners', you effete pundit, are rich and elite folks like yourself who have the time to whine when stocks go down, or some other rich extravagance that you can't immediately get. you can 'afford' to whine, but the average hard working Americans, the real voters that matter, can't 'afford' to. so quit your whining and get a clue. but i doubt it.

Howard Dean asks:
I'm not... anymore!

In the videos pitching the "Why are you a Democrat/Republican" video contests, Dean stays on script when he says "Be as creative and compelling as possible," while Duncan veers off and adds "Be as positive as possible". Interesting distinction.
Before I found out everything in politics is rigged, I used to look forward to the Sunday News show, Now I realize the maze of CFR they will set up diferent topics to distract the viewers from the facist takeover of the US. Every soldier in both wwwars died in vein if we can not even be safe from our own gov't who are putting floride in our water and mercury in kids vacinations and purpose driving up gas prices to keep the masses inmobile. It is true they intend to attack us in every way imaginable because they Cheny and Bush are the devils advocate.
All I could think of is reasons why I'd never call myself a Democrat. Like how many of my clients are dead now, because no Democrat rose up to try to stop this war.
If my DNA was infused with a jellyfish, & my spinal column made out of runny Vaseline, then yes, I'd be a proud Democrat. Unfortunately for DNC I was born with testicles.

Democrats need to stop being reactive and having the "wait and see what Republicans call us next" and unleash their own attack dogs. They need a new Carville ( who has now co-opted everything he stood for in the 90's for Coke advertisements.)
