This Week with George Stephanopoulos marks the passing of pioneering cardiovascular surgeon Michael DeBakey, investor and philanthropist John Templeton, former all-star Yankee and baseball announcer Bobby Murcer, former FoxNews anchor and White House Press Secretary Tony Snow as well as 5 soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to icasualties.org, the total number of troop members killed in Iraq is now 4,432. During the last week, Iraq Body Count confirmed the deaths of 165 Iraqi civilians.
As with all posts about the passing of notable current political figures, we ask that you keep your posts respectful. Posts that do not comport with the commenting policy will be deleted without notice.

Bobby Mercer brings up bad memories. He was heralded as the next Mickey Mantle, but for me, he'll always be remembered as the guy we got when the Cubs traded Bill Madlock because he was asking for too much money.
Tony Snow???? Who is he?
God bless our fallen soldiers. May their families find peace.
And 9 more US soldiers killed in Afghanistan. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25663321/
I read elsewhere today that the draw down of troops in Iraq will simply be shifted over to Afghanistan. Perhaps we will find Osama after all?
Still not going to watch Little Georgie Stepinalottamess. Sorry Nicole....
Cancer is a disease that knows no class divisions. It kills the week and poor and it kills the rich and strong. I would not wish cancer on the worst of men. It is a terrible way to die and the families are devastated by the loss of loved ones. As much as I reviled the healthy Tony Snow I can only say that I feel sorry for his family. His suffering is over. Theirs has just begun.
When this country and it's God awful main stream media finally recognizes that the real heroes worth memorializing aren't the likes of Tony Snow or some baseball figure that never really panned out and instead are the troops fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, then I may think about watching little George's pathetic program, but until that day... I'll continue to ignore Georgie Boy.
As for Mr. Snow, I wish his family well and hope he gets eternal rest without the spin!
Ah! The "Thumper Rule:" if you can't say anything nice, don't say nuthin' at all.
I just can't imagine why folks wouldn't say nice things about Dr. DeBakey. After all, he changed a lot of lives for the better, both directly and indirectly. For that, the Universe rewarded him with a long, rich life of 99 years.
If there were a St. Peter, I wonder how Tony Snow would explain away having been an apologist/shill for the most odious government in American history?
RIP Bobby Murcer.
Bob Kincaid @ 6:
What a great service Dr. DeBakey delivered. A family member survives today decades after a heart transplant. Maybe the Universe will provide us more DeBakeys to reward us with richer, longer lives of perpetual robust functionality.
For the troops:
I Call upon the Goddess in Her second Aspect,
The Mother, comforting and loving
Take these fallen into Your care;
Take the families they leave behind
Into Your bosom and let them know
That their loved ones now reside
In the Land of Youth, where there is
No pain, no sorrow and no illness
And all is Eternal Spring.
So may it Be.
Do I have to be nice to Iraq Body Count as well? I mean, they aren't dead (unfortunately). I'm pretty well convinced that organization is a CIA front, the purpose of which is to minimize the public perception of the death toll in Iraq. You really must stop quoting them and linking to them.
Get this straight -- the percentage of deaths of Iraqi civilians by politically motivated violence which get reported in the news media and meet the criteria IBC uses for "confirmation" is, by the best available estimates, fewer than 10%. People who actually follow the situation in Iraq and care about the Iraqi people know that Iraq Body Count is a fraud, and they are universally despised. GW Bush is among the many people who have used their bogus numbers in support of the U.S. occupation. Please listen to me. You are embarrassing yourself.
The Wanderer @ 10:
You have brought tears to my eyes.
Thank you.

(Deep sigh...rubbing my temples)
Okay Tony Snow...(pounding headache)...even you...rest in peace.
When our time is up it's up. And there's nothing none of us can do about it.
L.A. Confidential @ 14:
Unless you are Dick Cheney, of course, in which case all you need is a case of Pacemaker batteries, a lock on the gun cabinet and an attendant to pack you in ice every night.
L.A. Confidential @ 15:
Don't forget the blood of two score virgins, LAC. It's the key ingredient in the Cheney process.
Jo Says: Cancer is a disease that knows no class divisions. It kills the week and poor and it kills the rich and strong. I would not wish cancer on the worst of men. Very well said. As much as I loathed the way he spoke out of both sides of his mouth, he did his job, albeit to lie for the most part to the American public. Then again who doesn't (both Dems and Repugs). I have lost a loved one to cancer as well and it is a tough loss to deal with. I wish the best for his family in this tough time.
RIP Michael DeBakey, John Templeton, and Bobby Murcer. Beyond that I have nothing else to say.
add 9 troops killed yesterday Iraq time. How odd that no mention of American contractors killed.I guess they are nobodies, just because they get paid double of a GI's salary
Why do you keep posting this series Mr. Admin?
It serves no purpose more than to give a little more airtime for the Disney propaganda wing of the republican party.
One hundred and sixty-five in one week. What kind of "freedom" have we wrought upon them?
Indignant members of the Patterico blog (a right-wing site) were bemoaning how some posters to the L.A. Times website were insulting the memory of Tony Snow. Some of the posts regarding Snow were indeed tasteless and vicious.
Snow was a liar and a shill for the Bush Crime Family. That said, I'm sad for him and his family. Nobody deserves to go that way.
(I pointed out to some of the more hysterical Patterico posters that plenty of reich-wingers were dancing in the aisles at the news of Ted Kennedy's cancer. Their hypocrisy seems to know no bounds.)
Sometimes it seems as if every last shred of decency has left these United States ...
Also in memoriam ... Rocky Aoki, founder of the Benihana restaurant chain. Pneumonia at age 69. (Rocky's daughter, Devon, appears in the movies Sin City and War.)
And, only of concern if you're a gamer, Erick Wujcik (Palladium Games, Phage Press), passed away from cancer on June 7.
I first heard about Tony Snow through CelebrityDeathBeeper.com. I kept checking C&L to find a post and more information, yet nothing. I'm certainly no fan of the man, but he is a significant political figure in recent history and died quite suddenly. We gave Tim Russert a post and it seemed as though many posters didn't like him either. Doesn't he at least deserve his own post?
Dick Cheney: Mr president.... if we attack IRAN today, we can expect to kill 5000000 civilians AND a pink Camel
Dubya: A PINK CAMEL ?
Dick Cheney: See Mr President... I told you nobody would care about 5000000 Iranian civilians
Michael DeBakey is the only one worth mention or had memorable achievements.
Guess which one of the list will get or got the least publicity and fewest obituaries?
I wasn't a fan of Tony Snow, but it is always sad when someone dies. Whether it be him, the soldiers in Iraq or my Uncle Bubby who died on Friday.
