Feeling Jittery About Iran

This can't be good... Siun at FDL:

While poking around Iraqi news I ran across an odd little piece in the Arab Times reporting that Israel was denying reports that Israeli fighter jets were using US bases in Iraq to practice for an attack on Iran. My perennial worry about an attack on Iran kicked in - and was not eased by the report in the Sunday Times of London that Bush has "amber lighted" an Israeli attack on Iran:

President George W Bush has told the Israeli government that he may be prepared to approve a future military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities if negotiations with Tehran break down, according to a senior Pentagon official.

and that Israel may well want to act before a potential Obama presidency:

Senator Barack Obama's previous opposition to the war in Iraq, and his apparent doubts about the urgency of the Iranian threat, have intensified pressure on the Israeli hawks to act before November's US presidential election. "If I were an Israeli I wouldn't wait," the Pentagon official added.

The Israeli news site Ynet makes that last bit even more worrying in their video account which includes a mention of Obama's plan to visit Israel this summer and notes that:

In the event a military strike takes place during his visit the Democratic candidate would be forced to make a stand regarding the issue possibly jeopardizing his position as America's next president.

Is that called a "win-win" by the Bush/Olmert crew? Read on...

How much will oil be per barrel when the bombs drop? $250? $300?
Gas? $20 a gallon?

The same people who screamed "WAG THE DOG! WAG THE DOG!!" when Bill Clinton launched cruise missiles against 'al qaeda' are in favor of attacking Iran to gain an advantage in the November elections.

If Obama wants to win an election he will call for diplomacy with Iran NOW, and not wait for the neocons to attack. This would, AGAIN, show the foresight that Republicans have lacked since day one.

Why must ANY candidate agonize over the decision to bomb Iran? It's a fucking no brainer people, they pose the same immediate threat as Iraq did in 2003, ZERO

"win/win????????" These bleeeping freaks have taken leave of what little remains of their senses. the US economy is heading down the tubes, the infrastructure's crumbling, the midwest's up to their butts in toxic mud, the west's on fire and these freaks want to start a war that will totally disrupt the oil supply.

WIN/WIN??? these people are totally insane.

Have to be much faster then ;)

After FISA, I now doubt every word ever said by Obama.

He says he wants to talk to Iran, a country I feel we have been victimizing since 1953, and I want to believe him.

But I don't.

And if Israel does bomb Iran, I would support a COMPLETE cut off of foreign aid to them.

Oh, I already support that LOL!!!

And if Israel acts as the U.S. surrogate, I simply ask ANY candidate to explain how that makes one U.S. soldier's life safer by bombing Iran. Or how it will make the world any safer.

It's Christofascism, call it what it is.

It's a shame that any criticism of our policy in regards to Israel is instantly countered with charges of antisemitism.

This is a good example of how fucked up our relationship with Israel is right now. How dare they suggest tampering with our electoral process with military force.... If any other countries politicians suggested that kind of shit in public, we'd be flipping out as a nation.

John Dowd's picture

Everyone should listen to Terry Gross's interview with Seymour Hersh about this topic. If I recall correctly, I think it was described as an exclusive interview, in which he was breaking new details of the story about Iran. Hersh says that all the equipment and people are there already, and the attack is ready to roll out, 12 hours after the order, and that when it comes down to it, WE are going to do it, because Cheney wants it that way, because Israel can't pull it off the way he wants it done. I understand Hersh had an article on this in the Sunday NY Times? It's quite a long interview, not the regular kind that TG does. Compelling, sickening, Terrifying stuff. And like where's the rest of the news media?

Don't worry Krogers has a new program now where you can prepay for your groceries. For every hundred dollars you prepay, Kroger will credit you an additional 10% towards your purchase. Where can you get a deal like that, outside of the Wiemar Republic? Nothing says good times like prepaying for groceries. Why, they’ll even give you ten cents off your $4.15 a gallon gas. Your living the life of Riley now. So why worry about a silly war with Iran?

It's all because the American people collectively can't handle the truth. We speak about JFK as if we don't know what happened. We don't speak enough about the 2000 stolen election. We don't speak of false flag terrorism. Therefore they get away with it. We are too polite a society?? We act like we just don't get it to fit in?? We play along.

I don't want to talk about the arrangement of deck chairs as a metaphorical Titanic goes down. I want to discuss the root causes of these problems, and our society for the most part has made it taboo to do so. Very effectively.

Look how swiftly Rosie O'Donnell was marginalized for simply wanting a discussion. I don't even know anymore. They got us.

We've finally got a chance with the internet to educate ourselves about the Federal Reserve and such topics they don't speak about in school. Hopefully its not too late. Cynthia McKinney is running as a Green Party candidate. At least she questioned Rumsfeldt the way any patriotic American should have. Maybe Obama can pull this off and get us out of this mess? McCain is an idiot though. Plain and simple.

Eric in Ottawa's picture

So how does this work exactly?

Given the apparent doubt that those missiles in the photographs were even ballistic, where is the imminent danger?

What we've seen here is a transparent and deliberate manipulation by western media to portray Iran in a negative light. All we have to do is look back to the now proven misquotations about wiping Israel off the face of the map to see the real motivations.
This is just more of the same.

For years there has been talk of attacks on Iran. Fortunately for us, the public hasn't been scared (quite) that stupid just yet.
Now the hawks get desperate and maybe consider going ahead with this, with or without public approval?

The rhetorical question that comes to my mind is just what exactly to these people propose to do after they have unleashed what will likely be the biggest $hitstorm the world has seen since world war 2?
The US military is already stretched too thin. Leaders of the EU are unlikely to buy into such a foolish plan.

In the end, I'm hoping it's all just rhetoric, because I don't think it adds up favorably for anyone.
Certainly not the United States.

On the other hand, Republicans could, I suppose, point to the giant smoking pile of rubble in what used to be the middle east and claim somehow that this was all due to the indecision and weakness of the Democrats.

I wonder, does AIPAC favor one party over the other?

Heard something about the US having played a tactical game over an Iran attack, and apparently lost about 12 ships, including one carrier. If the sourced comment on this blog a month or two back is correct, about russian naval missiles, that will very likely be the case.

This is a contingent moment. I don't necessarily think they will call off elections because smirking chimp boy is a really bad front man for these crooks. Grandpa Psycho ain't much better but that's who they will go with.

Perhaps they have overstretched a bit. They need to close down the internet if they want to have order in this country and I don't know whether that is the smart move. I think they are hoping to have a False Flag in the U.S. but the AlexJones/Ron Paul crowd will go ape shit. I think there best bet is to sacrifice a fleet in the Gulf--- they will take pictures of the flaming ships going down and then juxtapose it with Pearl Harbor pictures. Still I am not sure it will work this time.

I say save that 30 Billion and invest it at home, perhaps in our infrastructure.

Then watch how fast Israeli fighters fall from the sky without US fuel subsidies.

Give it 20 years or so, and the history books will not tell you that Israel struck first, unprovoked.

After all, how many Americans don't know today that Israel started the 6 day war?

Hah! :)
No, we need to watch the Secret Service guys. If they don't move, then they know there's no real danger.
Even if the guy is near an airport.
And his schedule was public, so people know where he is.

Watch those SS guys, as they do absolutely nothing.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, eh Holmes?

It’s quite amusing seeing most you avoiding the main topic regarding Israel bombing Iran. What’s the matter? Are you afraid of being labeled anti-Semitic?

Hey, "anti-semitic" is the MOST damaging label in American politics. Even more so than anti-American. (Why is that I wonder?)

If your oponent can make THAT mud stick, then you're sunk.

Hey did you know that no other country even has the concept of being anti-homecountry? The Irish don't have an "anti-Irish" or "un-Irish" label. Nor do the English have an anti-English label. Or the Spanish. Or the Germans. Or the Italian. Or the Chinese..... It just seems to be America and Israel. Why is that?

If Bush doesn't start a war with Iran, either directly or using the US surrogate, Israel, before the end of 2008, it will be one of the true miracles of the 21st century.

What are you talking about? White nationalism is alive and well and growing in both Western and Eastern Europe.

The only thing standing between where we are now and an attack on Iran is completing some form of status of forces agreement between the US and Iraq that extends the occupation beyond the current cutoff at the end of the year. Little chance of that occurring after an attack; it will be one more casualty of an attack on Iran.

PS, If Israel even looks like they're going to bomb Iran, cut off their money.

The smartest thing the Iranians could do is even if bombed, do not retaliate. Most of the world would end up siding with them in the court of public opinion if this stupidity takes place.

turn the sky red ! no ones going to help iran but iran,

breakspear's picture

if we do this then there is nothing remotely left of a 'high ground' for the US at all, for a long time. Bush will have f**ked us real good for a long while. Iran will have carte blanche, as they were just attacked, to retaliate the way they see fit. and that would include our troops in the Middle East, and any ally in the Middle East. attacking Iran would endanger any American anywhere in the world. at that point we would be the cause of more sorrow than perhaps al qaeda. and it will be all Bush's doing and the Republicans who put him there as Prez.

We are going to wake up one morning and "Breaking News" will be prempting everything and we will find out that Israel has attacked "key strategic locations" in Iran. We will then be waiting for "market reaction" and we will hit the skids like never before.

We have a madman in the White House, people.

IMO FWIW

Get real. Israel doesn't have the aircraft to deliver the size bombs to penetrate and destroy Iran's underground facilities, and everybody knows it. Unless they use nukes, which even crazy W wouldn't let them do. Crazy Dick, the REAL president is a different story, eh?

So the boy-king talks of drilling in ANWR, the coasts, and the Green River Basin to lower the price of oil, yet talks of bombing Iran, which would result in a HUGE increase in price. Moron.

Anybody remember when the Israelis took out Saddam Hussein's nuclear reactor? That leftover yellow cake was about all that remained of that program. I can understand their position mind you. One reasonably sized dirty nuclear weapon would render a huge percentage of Israel uninhabitable. I don't think the Iranians have much to fear from the overstretched U.S forces barring an air attack. The Israelis have a lot more at stake and have shown the willpower to use force. By the way, the Israelis weren't the first to attack the Osirak facility, the Iranians attacked it in 1980.

I'm not so sure. Define the United States. You mean us? The criminals who run these wars don't give a shit about us. They feel they will get paid and the rest is not their problem. They know the American people are so tired, so ignorant, and so complacent that they can escape prosecution or any other negative consequences we may contemplate.

Why? Because they keep getting away with it. They know the system is too decayed to function anymore. It has been hijacked.

Problem is that the Iranian regime isn't packing a lot more concern for us regular folks than the the freaks in Israel or the Bush Crime Family. This is like watching a slow motion train wreck and we've all got window seats. Can't get off and can't stop the mofos from driving us over the cliff. Don't mind for myself but boy am I royally pissed for my daughter and her future.

Damn this sucks!!!!

I'd think they actually have more concern for the US population that Bush does for the Iranians to be honest.

The Iranian people as a whole actually quite like the majority of the American people and their culture. However, the longer these threats towards their country goes on, the more difficult the US government is making it for them to keep thinking that way.

Well, since I can't stand Bush, I won't be on the Fascist side.
Since I'm not content to wait to be rounded up by the secret police while bravely typing, I'm not on the C&L crowd's side.

I'd say I was on the Contitutionalist's side, But the Constitution doesn't exist anymore (can't fight for something that no longer exists!), so I guess we need a New Constitution before I decide to fight for it.

Or I could be a fighter for the Restoration of the Constitution. Okay I'm on the Side for Restoration. Since being a Constitutionalist would mean fighting for the Constitution as it stands right now, which is Fascism.

My daughters' tour to Israel ends today and I'll be glad to have them home before Bush decides "Today is the Day" What bothers me more than anything is the fact that strikes on Iran are going to kill thousands of innocent civilians and we don't give a damn. I guess if they're not American (like the Iraqis), we simply don't see them as flesh and blood people.

The Iran question is complex, fortunately Iran has one of the highest, per-capita, numbers of bloggers. Foreigners curious about the culture can get all kinds of info. That may change due to the proposed bill that would subject some bloggers to the death penalty.
Religious blasphemy might not only be illegal in Iran, it's also illegal under Massachusetts General Law.
