Daily Show: Obama, McCain and the Dobbs-O-Meter

Considering Lou Dobbs hates everything "foreign," you know Obama and McCain's respective speeches to The National Council of LaRaza would make his head explode. Obama's appeal for multilingualism reached especially dangerous levels on the "Dobbs-O-Meter."

"Last week both candidates spent a lot of time wooing Latino Americans by speaking to various Hispanic interest groups. How did they fare? Well, the best way to measure success in wooing the Latino community is by using the 'Dobbs-O-Meter.' The angrier Lou Dobbs gets, the better you're doing"

It was fun watching his head explode.

I am suprised that anything came out when he blew. I was sure it was a vacuum in there.

'Long time suffering piñata American' LOL!
But don't eat the candy, it's tainted with
xenophobia and hatred.

The xenophobia displayed by Bill O'Reilly and Michelle Malkin towards the Hispanics gets all the cuter when BillO would have been in that boat prior to 1960 and Malkin prior to about 20 years ago.

I find the whole thing very funny; I am learning Spanish in my spare time because I want to be able to talk to Mexicans when I go down there, they are very nice and friendly people. Plus learning a new language helps stave off senility; maybe Lou should try it!

For such a big head, there wasn't much candy in there.

Damn it, I'm 'murikan....and I only speak 'murikan!

lmao @ the dobbs-o-meter, hah.
that's funny shint.

I only watch Lou's show because he has good diverse guests. But Dobb's hides his bigotry behind a phony nationalism complete with an American flag stuck up his fat condescending ass. I'm sure Dobbs has some illegal immigrant Mexican chiefs locked in his mansion cooking him homemade burritos and tamales with guacamole.

You mean, Obama had the nerve to tell a Hispanic audience they should teach their kids Spanish? What a subversive.

Why isn't Lou on Fox News, it seems like such a better fit than CNN. One other question while we are at it; why are there so few Latino reporters on the major networks?

(disclaimer: i can't stand lou dobbs and ONLY watch his show when trapped like a caged beast)

that said, what i have seen really is irksome. he gets on his high horse and castigates the results of the economic system he supports. if i were to believe he was really a populist, and not a salesman with a shiny new product, he would address the reasons for our troubles, not the effects.

i think dobbs fits fine on cnn (take that as an insult to cnn, not a compliment to dobbs)

That flag will come flying out at warp speed about three or four hours after eating that particular meal.

Lou Dobbs daughters are equestrians. I beleive Oberman had a segment about how Dobbs avoids the question of whether or not the have Hispanic workers at the girls stables.

hilarious as always, however, that picture of dobbs is very disturbing.

I once did that with an Irish-American friend of mine who said we should kick out all immigrants. I pointed out that his grandparents would have to go too, and he said, "they should have let my grandparents in and then shut the door for good!"

Yeah, nice.

Dobbs is married to a foreign woman.

I hate to dumb down the discussion, but... Dobbs is a douche.

I watched this segment last night and I swear that it was one of the funniest moments that I've ever seen on the Daily Show. Frickin' genius!

Don't make me do the Stromm Thurman explanation.

I have a daughter-in-law who lives in Arizona. She said the Mexicans who live there stuff as many as they can into a house and completely ruin it. Their yards are full of trash, they blare music at all hours of the night, they carry guns and there are more shootings then anyone realizes. They hate the whites who are there and many run in gangs. This is in the Phoenix/Mesa area. She has since moved because she doesn't want that mentality to influence my grandson. I know there are a lot of good Mexicans and other Hispanics but hell, from what I hear from many people who live near the neighborhoods they take over they are few and far between.

I live in the NE and recently became disabled. I had to go to the welfare office to apply for food stamps. It was mostly full of Hispanic women with a ton of kids who were wearing designer clothing, had expensive jewelry (I make jewelry now so know the difference) all had cell phones which rang off the hook and the majority needed to speak with someone who could speak Spanish. They are the ones who are in most of the gangs and involved in most of the killings and drug deals in the area. They also have illegal guns by the dozens. They are the majority although a few are decent hard working honorable people. They majority want a quick buck by illegal means or getting on welfare and lying about who they live with.

The problem is that those who think they are so great don't live near them and don't have a clue. Spanish is not the language to learn, Chinese is. The countries that the Hispanics come from have educations as poor as ours in this country or worse so very few will ever make anything of themselves. Just look at the numbers who flee into this country to take what is left after the jobs are going from here to there.

Gonzales was a good example of the ethics of the majority of these people. Keep that in mind while you pat Obama or McCain on the back for reaching out to them.

Actually I believe his wife is Hispanic...

why is there opposition to regulated immigration? i realize this issue goes way back in time..but the last
20-30 of unregulated immigration i believe has hurt this country. depending what ares of the country your in.
ever since reagan it's really gotten out of control. it's cheap labor for corporations and military. it's by design and we know it. i knew nothing was going to change now this demographic has gotten so big it to can't fail.there's a trend starting to appear even amongst undoc. immigrants they are now challenging employers
it's human nature to want to be treated fairly. i heard an interview on public radio recently about agriculture labor immigrants in california being exposed to pesticides and health problems they're having...guess who pays for the medical treatment?

I know that there are some who think Jon overrated. I don't get my news from him, thats not his job (I get it from many other slanted news networks) but I always enjoy his (and staffs) irreverent view of peoples actions. He just cuts them down to size, show just how silly we should see them. I mean why should we give a crap about what Lou Dobbs thinks. He's just a talking head! Its all his opinions. O'Reilly interviewing Malken, Malken interviewing O'Reilly. Who cares? Not much different when Olberman interviews Maddow (I personally just agree with them most of the time) but its just the same thing.

I would have expected Mrs. Dobbs to ask him to STFU long time ago...

That is a really shitty thing to say. This guy is a totally believable witness to the abuses our system is put under on a daily basis by illegals, (and I don't care if they are hispanic or russian or vietnamese, illegal is illegal) and all you can do is insult him. How can you deny the absolute truth of everything he said? All i have to do is drive down the streets in Van Nuys, Pacoima, or any other of a hundred local L.A. neighborhoods and see that what this person says is indeed a fact. Try and run the gauntlet of hissing "day workers" at Home Depot if you are a woman. Try and take an evening stroll without being insulted and accosted by ne'r do well youths who barely speak the language yet know enough to call you names and panhandle. Try and get a good (and safe) night's sleep when the pit bulls are barking, the guns are firing, the people are fighting, the sirens are blaring, and the helicopters are circling. We lived in the heart of Van Nuys for many years and saw what was once a decent, hard working mixed race neighborhood become choked with cheap apartments and illegals and we still tried to stick it out because we had friends and relationships in the area. One by one the friends moved away and finally, after my wife (carrying my 6 year old son) was chased into my home by the nearby illegal gangbanger's pit bulls one afternoon, so did we.

Knee jerk insults to someone speaking facts and truths are best left to our enemies on the right, we are supposed to be better than them, so, lets practice what we preach. Remember, your experiences are not the same as everyone else's. Some of us happen to agree with some if not all of what Lou Dobbs and his ilk say because we have been personally and financially affected by these things. We are witnesses and victims. Get used to the fact that it is not a rose-colored world out there, and while many people do not deserve demonizing, others are well deserving, and race or language or religion has nothing to do with that.

Nice straw man... Just because I don't buy the BS of the illegals hampering the system, it doesn't mean I am for unregulated immigration.

The issue is that welfare, esp. the expenses incurred by illegal immigrants, it is most of the time offset by the fact that they a) Pay taxes themselves (mostly in the form of sales taxes), and b) they are fundamental for certain economic activities.

If you don't feel like paying for their emergency room visits because they got injured picking strawberries at $3.5/hour, I recommend you start doing that job.

For the most part illegal immigrants bring a positive cash flow to the economy, that is why there is illegal immigration to begin with, because a lot of employers pretty much need slave-like labor that works for peanuts and shuts the fuck up.

Want to stop illegal immigration? Keep an eye on the employers (you know, some of the most white bread... white, red, and blue ueber American patriots are the ones benefiting the most from illegal immigration).

If anything I am against illegal immigration because it enables employers to practice brutal labor policies, which I strongly oppose. I am for a more sane immigration approach.

And since we are so concerned about the effect of welfare in our tax dollars. Why don't we concentrate on corporate welfare? Which is orders of magnitude worse than the effects of an illegal having to attend an emergency room because he was doing a job you would not get caught death even considering, or the mythical reaganesque "welfare queens."

"EJG,

Dude,
Same things said about Italians, Irish, Scots, Russians, and just about everyone else who migrated here, and lest we forget it is also the same thing they are still saying about Native Americans. So to generalize, you are a bigot and I think it says more about the state of AZ than it does about Latinos, so there PFFFFFT.

wow i kind of surprised where this went.....i don't understand what is wrong with a common sense appoach
to Regulated Immigration...that's all not lou dobbs
over the top rhetoric a solution...if you want to slow it down regulate it...doesn't mean your racists...i met many wonderful/cool hispanics....it's hurting some of us more than others,it's hurting mexico....big corporations are behind this they keep wages low and conditions are not good for instance in meat processing/packing places.
this is an unfair advantage...if it hurts some industries that's the risk they take in this free market they boost about....i don't understand that people don't see this part of it....i live in the southwest and it is an issue...and i'm a liberal-moderate democrat

... you'd be surprised to know that even illegals pay taxes.

i'm aware some pay taxes.......i also know many citizens are paying extra costs equated to paying more
taxes this corporate welfare. part of the increase in healthcare cost since many aren't covered by health insurance....can't pay their healthcare bills put on the paying consumer/taxpayers. auto ins. that is a mandate inthe state i'm in has a lot of uninsured/underinsured
drivers my auto ins. close to doubled spoke to me agent people without ins. they can't afford it.
apparently your advocate for unregulated immigration i'm will just have to leave it at that....

Which is orders of magnitude worse than the effects of an illegal having to attend an emergency room because he was doing a job you would not get caught death even considering, or the mythical reaganesque "welfare queens."

it is corporate welfare your not getting my point i'm not smart enough to get my point across correctly i apologize...we see it differently your probably correct and i'm totally wrong let's leave it at that

Just because some legal white person has abused the system in the past, or is currently abusing the system does not make it "okay" for someone of color to do the same. Umm. Yeah. Sure. Can I just say this? YOU are wasting your time learning Spanish, and our new Hispanic neighbors are wasting their time with English. Forget all of that and start teaching your kids MANDARIN.

Mandarin probably wouldn't be that useful in Mexico or South America, where I plan to retire. But Spanish probably would be.

If I was planning to keep working, then I'd learn Punjabi or Mandarin.

I happen to live in North Texas, a lot closer to the border than NE or Philly.
I live in an older neighborhood that has become ethnically diverse in the last 10 years or so. We had a lot of problems with drugs, burglaries and gangs until the Spanish speakers moved in. The problems were being caused by the under-educated white kids.
My new neighbors take pride in their homes, keep the lawn mowed and the trash picked up, and don't cause any problems at all.
I have lived around and worked with Spanish speaking people all of my life.

Some neighborhoods go to shit, some don't. I live in the middle of a fairly large hispanic community (Atlanta) and the folks here are law-abiding, quiet, family-oriented types. Yes, a large portion of them (if not most) are probably 'illegals'. Great neighborhood, friendly people.

If I were to move a few miles south of here, well.. the neighborhood's shit. And not hispanic.

So what is the lesson learned? Depends on whether you're a bigot. Some neighborhoods go to shit, some don't... REGARDLESS of nationality/ethnicity/place of origin.

Neighborhood going to shit? Move, deal or try to mitigate the negative changes.

There is a big difference between wanting to see immigration regulated, and making judgments about the moral character of an entire ethnic group based on the relatively small group of bad apples they have just heard about...

It's one thing to state that unchecked immigration needs scrutiny, it's another to suggest that Gonzales is a liar and a cheat because all Latinos are liars and cheats. Understand?

Please don't put words in my mouth, as I didn't say I didn't think there were no problems. My statement had much more to do with people spewing tired stereotypes based only on what they've heard, and having not bothered to actually acquire a more balanced perspective on what the Latino community is, and what we are like. Usually many of the people who buy into the stereotypes have no clue about the pain and pride of living in the community and being a part of it.

I'm sure you must not like being painted with broad strokes, especially if they are negative, am I right? Same with us. I consider it a terrible insult to be lumped in with Alberto Gonzales, not to mention assumptions being made about my moral character. You wouldn't like it either!

Usually many of the people who buy into the stereotypes have no clue about the pain and pride of living in the community and being a part of it.

I would just like to point out to the person who mentioned Alberto Gonzales' conduct as an "example" of Hispanic culture, just how low you've gotten...

As an ethnically mixed Hispanic who's grown up in majority Hispanic neighborhoods, there are some people who do live up to the stereotype, but Alberto Gonzales is no more our representative than O'Rally is of the New York Irish, or the Bush Crime Family representative of New Englanders.

I've sat next to people like you who've ranted and raved to me about Mexicans ruining their perfect little towns, only to have them backpedal the moment I inform them of my background, the whole "Oh, I didn't mean *all* of you!" tripe... I have pity for you all, that you have no inkling how ignorant and clueless you sound.

I said it and it is true. You guys were all bragging and full of pride when he got that position. Now that he has shown his true colors you disown him. THAT is something to be proud of? Talk about sounding ignorant and clueless. Also, if you read my entire post you will see that I did not say all Mexicans or Hispanic people are bad. I read my paper and almost every day there is a shooting or stabbing done by a youth who is Hispanic. Just yesterday, a house invasion with the inhabitants brutally beaten by a group of HISPANIC teens. A stabbing of two people in another incident involving HISPANICS and the list goes on and on. Drug raids, robberies and it doesn't end. I live in an area that has a lot of blacks, they are rarely involved. We also have a lot of immigrants from Europe who also do not get into trouble and Asia. In fact in this area of NE that I live in the white population is becoming the minority already. I am basing my statements on FACT.

You can also ask which group steals the most ID's? My daughter-in-law went to the emergency room and was denied service until she went home and got a ton of paperwork to prove who she is because there was a MEXICAN woman who registered using her social security number.

I am not even saying that those who are here legally are the problem, it is the millions who illegally cross the border. Some are honest and hard working, I agree with that but far too many are not and it is taking away from this country. It has to stop. It makes me furious to see all of the sympathetic screwballs cry foul when there is a raid and these people are rounded up. They cry that the government is heartless by separating parents from their children. HELL NO! It is the parents who broke the law first by crossing the border illegally and then took a job that could have been given to a citizen or even immigrant who is legally in this country and more often then not they also stole someones identity. THEY are the ones who put their children into this position not the government.

Call me anything you like but the facts stand and support what I have said. Truth hurts sometimes.

There are legitimate reasons for 'illegals' being here... and it bears mentioning that the only reason they're illegal is due to our current policies on immigration. 'Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses' and all that... funny how we citizens don't really talk about that motto anymore.

There's a real dearth of decent jobs in this country, and a REAL dearth of so-so jobs which pay anything near to a living wage. Virtually all Americans are feeling the crunch... what I find so distasteful is watching people who are struggling to get by point the blame DOWN the ladder. As if our current 'Information Economy'-outsourcing of manufacturing jobs-stagnant wage economy could in any way be blamed on people who sneak across the border and do day-labor and housecleaning for a living. As if the deconstruction of our middle class could be blamed on the most powerless group of people living here.

Folks feel powerless. Dumped on and sold-out. Historically when that happens, people wind up taking their frustrations out on whatever group they can, which winds up being, always, the most alien, marginalized and least powerful among them.

It isn't as if 'illegals' are replacing Americans down at the local furniture factory or auto plant. The furniture factories and auto plants have all closed. That's why we work at Wal-Mart and KFC. Else, we work at some dead-end office job and wonder if we're going to be downsized next year.

'Illegals' aren't going to take your crappy office job. They aren't forced to work at KFC (no green cards). They do day labor and clean our homes and pick our crops and all for $3 an hour.

The economy sucks, but it isn't their fault.

Blame those responsible... those who caused this to happen, and continue to. Blaming the little guy may make you feel better, but it's cheap and lessens you.

Grow up.

Funny...there are people in the Detroit area who will make most of the same points about black people, and those in and around Appalachia who say it about those they consider poor white trash.

There's something that those hispanics near you and the others I mentioned have in common- poverty. Soul-crushing poverty. So if you're looking to correct the problem, you should address the root of the problem.

i am blaming the corporations and the government primarily.......i don't like that these people are working for low wages/poor working conditions they're being used and it's illegal regardless why/what caused that
it is the unfair advantage to corporations it hurt everybody......some more than others
some people on this issue are speaking about racism/ethinicity i'm speaking of having Regulated Immigration......i haven't been convinced that's a bad idea.i'm a humanitarian......many countries Regulated Immigration

here's jobs that were taken possibly from seniors that can't afford their medication/food

I would find it orders of magnitude more disturbing the fact that seniors have to work to begin with, than whether or not their "jobs" were taken by illegals.

LOL, I'm only going to say this little thing to you, then I won't reply to after this because to do otherwise is laughable, because evidently you are just going to prove my point about people who generalize about the Hispanic community solely based on what the hear from other sources without bothering to deal with the people themselves... "We" were bragging about Gonzales?? Hahaha...no. The Cubans maybe? I do not trust any conservatives allied with Bush (irrespective of cultural background), and have smelled a rat ever since Gonzales got his position. I am not the only one who feels that way, and I am not the only one who is ashamed. But evidently a little birdie told you otherwise, so I guess I ought to bow to your superior knowledge. ¡No seas tan ridicula! ;)

No worries, and I'm sorry if I came off a little harsh. :) Immigration is a concern to me too, I would love to see people actually do something more effective that would be more helpful to the people who need the changes the most, the poor American born folks, the people who come here legally, and the people coming illegally too, that they might be able to what they need to do to be 100% legal when they need to come.

i may agree with you there but nevertheless unless you've living in a dream world it's the new reality
evaporating pensions,inflation,accelerating health costs
you know as well as i do seniors are working these jobs and need this jobs in some caes..check the inflation numbers....you and i aren't going to agree that's alright
illegal immigration is good and the way they're treated
like slave labor
