Funny Moments In Live Television: McCain as The Joker
Here's a funny goof I came across this weekend that I got a real kick out of. You gotta love live TV.

Alex Witt: Peter, I want you to take a listen to what John McCain said this weekend in his radio address and get you to react. Peter, listen up.
[Video of the Joker from "The Dark Knight"]
Alex Witt: Well actually that was The Joker. So we're not gonna go there. There's no parallel there that we want to, uh, make any sort of, uhh... you know where I'm going with this. That was bad.
On a related note, I saw "The Dark Knight" Saturday night and there's a good reason it broke the all-time weekend box office record. Christian Bale makes a bad ass Batman and Heath Ledger did a phenomenal job portraying the insanity of McCain the Joker. I highly recommend it for comic book-genre fans and non-fans alike. Senator Leahy's cameo alone is worth the price of admission.

Hahahaha! So does that make Obama the dark knight then?
McAyn should be so funny. Or on topic.
Ever.
Once the rest of the reich-wing media gets a hold of this, MSNBC will have to issue an apology....just watch.
I knew that McCain was a c&nt that plastered on his make-up like a trollop!
LOL! That wasn't the Joker, that WAS McGeezer! hahahahahahaha!
BTW, Batman dies at the end of the Dark Knight
Personally, from the previews... Looks to me like Ledger was channelling Nixon for his role..... But that's just my perception.
Not like his Joker was trying to figure out how to erase tapes or anything.....JD
That MSNBC segment was awesome, I think I am going to look for a high resolution capture and send it to all my Republican friends.
Well I can't wait to see the movie...
Now onto more important thangs...I watched a few minutes of McBains town hall meeting or whatever...at a GM plant in Michigan...there must have been 3 people shilling for GM while I was watching...it was despicable. I turned the tv off...
Obama isn't willing enough to take an unpopular position to be the "Dark Knight." As you will understand at the end of the film, if/when you see it. In fact, there are few people who embody the benevolent nature of Bale's Batman.
I actually stuck around through the credits because I thought I saw/heard Senator Leahy...shows what kind of political nerd I am when I can identify a Senator based on the back of his head and his voice.
Have you seen McLame smile/laugh after having made one of his little "jokes"? Even scarier than Ledger's excellent portrayal.
I don't get Hollywood's obsession with re-making Batman movies. I was over it after the 1st one.

I see another Colbert green screen entry. Somebody?
Del Capslock @ 11:
$155 million for one weekend. Enough said.

No,
Here's why:

Hilarious!
I assume that heads rolled over that little faux paus.
Being my Senator I would have wished Senator Leahy had spent the time while in mine and the rest of Vermonts employment to actually have done something about the thugs in Washington, DC instead of talking about doing something about thugs in a comic book movie. Yeah his appearance was cool. But this ain't the movies Pat! Get your ass to work putting bushco and company behind bars and restoring our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, and our other hard won freedoms! Vermont needs the guy you portrayed in that movie representing us not our highly paid Senator portaying a tough guy representing big movie business interests. OK? Have I made myself clear Senator?
DO IT LIVE, DO IT LIVE
Del Capslock @ 11:
Well normally I would agree with that...but Batman Begins was light years ahead of Timothy Burtons awful movies. Burton should be banned from making any more comic book movies.
He was goin for the old school comic book look...and achieved it to a certain degree, but I think most who would want to see a Batman movie want to see something approaching Frank Millers graphic novels...a gritty, tough as nails badass who happens to be rich. Not some poof in a cape chasing after other poofs in tights.
These latest versions have a good deal more realism.
Exotic Blue Lensman @ 10:
Yes...That New Orleans "speech" to counter Obama's primary victory speech was absolutely scary.
liberalNmoderation @ 8:
Saw it twice. Going to see it again...this time on IMAX. Yes, I have no life. Oh, and if anyone is contemplating insulting me...I suggest you dont'...otherwise I will give away whole sections of the movie and the others in the room who have not seen the moveie yet...will turn on you. ; 0 )
Liberal AND Proud @ 22:
Sweeeeeet! I have yet to experience an IMAX film, as I am a lazy sod.
I wrote a John McCain skin cancer story a while ago. The anchor started reading and Mr. Potatohead video started rolling! I think it was a designated news day, too. Curses!
Del Capslock @ 11:
I hate sequels too. Sequels are normally made just to scam cash from the many mindless movie going retards out here. My nephew dragged me to see Batman. I wasn't disappointed...it's a great film. Bales and Ledger were phenomenal.
Silly Dems...

We all know Bush has "teh gay"!
Melissa @ 24:
that's good ....i like that
Well if Cindy McCain piles on some makeup on his face, he would look like the Joker.
jebus.loves.me @ 29:
Nah...like clayface...
Cardboadurinal @ 10:
He's a vigilante who in part created the Joker. He's no hero, and taking the law into your own hands should never be condoned. Which is why, boys'n'girls, when it comes to comic books, make mine Watchmen.
Odd bit: this is now the third time Pat Leahy has appeared in an iteration of Batman.
The line said by Joker to Leahy was pinched straight out of Ruthless People.
I saw a clip of McCain speaking somewhere last week and the audience looked like they had been green screened in. No one behind him was looking at him and when he made one of his lamest jokes the people's expressions didn't change. It was very strange.
General_Rennenkampf @ 31:
Cover up, boys. Your geek is showing.
a gaffe from the joker.....i mean the foreign policy expert
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/21/mccain-owns-first-foreign_n_114...
Liberal AND Proud @ 34:
Meh, Alan Moore's not exactly the geeky type of writer. If you've ever read Lost Girls, you'll understand what I mean.
Terrible @ 19:
Yeah, my senator is Kennedy and what the hell has he done recently other than line the pockets for cancer surgeons??? I mean, what the hell, shouldn't the senators be in the Senate like 100% of the time fighting corruption and stuff???
liberalNmoderation @ 21:
I think Joel Schumacher's were worse, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.
ysbaddaden @ 38:
Heh, Steel is the suckiest DC Comics movie ever, IMHO.
General_Rennenkampf @ 39:
What about Catwoman?
Funny, I always thought Laura Bush was a better fit as the Joker. She's got the look and the makeup down already (and especially the smile).
A black what?!?!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kQWFMikmik
General_Rennenkampf @ 39:
Mel Schumacher destroyed the franchise. I think he's doing motivational and sensitivity training films now.
Liberal AND Proud @ 43:
ysbaddaden @ 40:
You got me with Catwoman.
As for Schumacher, I think he's working on a movie about Billy Milligan now.
Dr. Hussein Matt @ 16:
Also - the fact that they can make a truly bad-ass movie......Just watching that YouTube put chills up my spine....I'm going to see it tonight for the first time, but I have not been this excited about a movie for years-----of course, I was excited about Jurassic Park and Phantom Menace but was disappointed with both....not the same here - this looks truly awesome!
What I want to see is a movie directed by Oliver Stone, from a script written by David Mamet of the epic encounter between these two heroes as they attempt to fighty out which one among them is the greatest:

LULZ. The underwear guy would win.
And would it kill Hollywood to remake these two classics?

http://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/6/A70-3478
General_Rennenkampf @ 39:
Ooooh yeah...forgot about those, you are correct YSB...and Steel...that was gawd-awful...almost as painful as watching He-Man with Dolph Lundgren.
liberalNmoderation @ 49:
Couldn't have been as painful as his speedo style loincloth.
If you really want bad action heroes try the TV show incarnation of Spiderman with Nicholas Hammond, and the Hulk meets the Daredevil, and the Hulk meets Thor TV movies.
webslinger @ 45:
Well Jurassic Park should have been rated R...needed LOT'S more blood and gore IMHO...
Phantom Menace...don't EVEN get me started.
I rarely go to theaters unless it's a LOTR type movie...which as we all know are very few and far between.
ysbaddaden @ 50:
GAH!!! I had blocked those awful images and terrible dialogue from my head, thanks.
Or how about
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl4hUUBEuks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=br2hXBhgLVY
There was also a TV show called Dark Knight, and another called Mantis that I can't find any video's too.
Del Capslock @ 12:
There are actually some very difficult decisions for the charachters to make in this movie that I found very unsetteling and made me squirm in my seat.
I tried to find Heath Ledger in this movie.....He is not there!
At first I thought it had a right or left bent to it but it is a morality conundrum. Heath ledger is the best actor I have ever witnessed, BAR NONE. (wish he wasn't gone)
And people complain about Dan Rather's mistake.

Even those last two would be better than that awful Brandon Routh movie.
webslinger @ 45:
Yeah, it was pretty bad-@ss. I did enjoy it. I have never seen a movie on an opening weekend. I always wait until there are about 6 other people in the theater....but, I got caught up in the hype and I have to say it was pretty good. I think it more-or-less lived up to the hype. It sorta dragged on a bit and the dialog was a bit cheesy at times, especially towards the end. Overall, it give it an 8 on a scale of 10.
And who could forget:

and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRYa5Kdhg_8
I have to admit I was drawing a blank on the name of the last one.
A freudian slip if ever there was one!
If the corporate media had done that to Obama it wouldn't have been a mistake.
Is McCain the Joker of the joke?
That was McSame alright, playing the fear card.
Notice how nervous the anchorwoman was. As if she knew heads were going to roll at corporate media headquarters for that mistake.
ysbaddaden @ 56:
As a 7 year kid, I loved the Spider Man series...and those eastern Superman shows...wow...Oh yeah and I loved the Misfits of Science thought it was a great show...of course I also thought The Dukes of Hazzard was the best show ever when I was a kid...so...yeah.
Remember Manimal? or that gawd awful Tron knock-off series...can't remember the name of that one...oh yeah...and don't forget Shazam!
"We're not intimidated by thugs" If only Patrick Leahy could stand up to Dick Cheney the way he stood up to the Joker.
Whaaa? @ 54:
Again, I can't wait to see the new Batman movie...and I agree, Ledger was a kickass actor. But the best...I dunno...Forrest Whittaker is my favorite at the moment...Last King of Scotland was incredible. But he's been a favorite of mine for eons.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but I assume that Leahy subsequently rolls over and says "Anything you want, Mr. Joker!"
Sailor Art Thomas, Jr. @ 67:
Nice burn man...nice. heheheheee

I do remember Manimal, but was so busy trying to find Mantis and Dark Knight clips I clean forgot to look for one for that show.

meanwhile, in hellboy ii: the golden army, when hellboy battles the plant god in the city streets, a movie theatre marquee announces (with letters missing) the showing of the john landis running gag "see you next wednesday."
also, i vaguely remember a not-too-bad tv movie about dr. strange w/jessica walter (back in the day).
just got around to seeing ironman, it was much better than i thought it would be (was never an ironman fan myself).
loved the "strategic homeland intervention, enforcement, & logistics division" joke, which i did not see coming!!
Caerid @ 4:
Hey, I wanted to say that! I love the irony.. Beautifully demonstrated by the main-line media.
72 skippy
You mean dis guy?
Dig the perm.

I'm surprised no one has commented on Batman's mass-surveillance system (FISA), his "interrogation" of the Joker (torture), and capture of Lau, the mobster banker (rendition).
sharkcellar @ 1:
Actually......... :)
By the way, lemme guess: Republicans think that McCain's repeated gaffs (e.g. Czechoslovakia) evince nothing about his awareness, but the one-time Joker snafu proves that MSNBC is part of the monolithic, megalomaniacal menace that is liberal media bias.
Dean @ 18:
Well, at least the head of operator of the digital airplay system who punched up the wrong clip.
But hey, the slipper fit !
Shameless plug or Freudian Slip?
Either way- 70+ year old super villain holds Americans hostage with irrational plan for world domination.
It was overrated.
I thought the Dark Knight was totally fucking badass.
I saw Leahy and couldn't believe he said, "We're not intimidated by your thugs."
Yes, Senator Leahy, actually, YOU ARE.
General_Rennenkampf @ 31:
The value of Watchmen's stock will drop after Zack Snyder is done with it.
regarding dk....it is not a batman movie
it is a crime thriller/drama, that just happens to have batman, the joker and two face in it
even if you removed these characters, you have a strong drama/action movie
and captain/commisioner gordon steals the show
and big bonus....preview for watchmen
oh, and i would vote for the joker....that dude means what he says and says what he means
I enjoyed Batman Begins, and really like Christian Bale. (He uses his Batman voice in Howl's Moving Castle, because it conveys pain and isolation as well as power.) Ledger's performance was excellent. Portraying the menace of dealing with someone truly psychotic (what RPGers would identify as "chaotic evil") was fascinating. However, the good people of Gotham made a lot of bad choices, especially at the end.
I ended up disliking the movie.
Why?
First, the story. Movies are built on story, and this one was weak. All special effects and explosions. The combination of 1930s/40s ambiance (bright lights and rubber hoses and hard punches were the *accepted* way to question mere suspects, the unstable paddy wagons, the lack of monitors at the hospitals and primitive conditions there) set against the futuristic James Bondian gadgetry just didn't work. With our contemporary surveillance society (cameras at every street corner and in every room, traffic of explosives and money and such all monitored and recorded, hospitals with their drug supplies especially watched), the movement of this much material (in the military sense), for explosion after explosion after explosion, would have been noticed. Too many logical inconsistencies. The supposed good guys deliberately irradiating money that will go into the general population? Poisoning people to protect money? BTW, if you *drill* a hole in a single metal drum of gasoline in order to insert a wire, you don't need to wait for a phone call to set off the explosion. Really. Besides, the fumes from all those tapped barrels would have rendered our victims rather prematurely dead. I could go on, and on. The actors did well by their characters, portraying decency, insanity, idiocy, but the screenplay sucked eggs. With decades worth of graphic novels, surely the writers could have come up with a story that didn't jolt our intelligence.
And I really, really hated the ending. What sort of object lesson does Commissioner Gordon's son take away from this one? That political expediency and support for a lie and cover-up is more important than doing what is right and just? Blaming the wrong man because "he is tough enough to take it" excuses the corruption within the police department?
This isn't a spoiler, because anybody who knows anything about The Dark Knight knows that he is a vigilante, operating outside the bounds of law, and thus hunted by the "official" protectors of society, however, the set-up is mind-numbingly awful. And very, very, wrong on all levels of wrongness.
My recommendation for the Oscar voters would be to consider the actors and ignore the director and screenwriter. Totally. Maybe then they'll consider giving us a story worth the budget... and worth the viewer's time.
Oh, that's just perfect! You probably couldn't actually work to find and edit a better clip sequence! Thanks for the laugh!
Some MSNBC staffer has a great sense of humor. Hope they didn't get fired.
I'm a joker, I'm a smoker, I'm a midnight toker
So if the Joker is looking for Harvey Gantt, does that mean Gotham is Really Charlotte,NC and Jesse Helms would be....
Batman is down with FISA
hauksdottir @ 83:
Wow...lighten up...what're ya? A bloody film critic?
I bet you picked apart Lord Of The Rings for it's "historical" inaccuracies. Sheeeeesh!
Why does Gary Oldman play Commissioner Gordon like he's Ned Flanders?
I keep expecting Commissioner Gordon to respond to Batman with an, "okily-dokily."
http://www.virginmedia.com/microsites/movies/slideshow/simpsons-extras/i...
How is this new "realistic" Batman going to mesh with such potential villains as the vampire Monk, Clayface, Man-Bat and Anthony Lupus the werewolf?
Okay - Some people call him the joker, I prefer "Cowboy of Love". Some freaks even call him "Maurice" because he speaks of he pompatous of love.
I personally call him a drooling old crank.
Hey you kids - get off my lawn!
DFooK
Magnificent!
BTW: I see that Alex 'Dim'Witt is into her, I believe, third or fourth "I wanna keep my credibility AND my job" make-over.
Curtsie!

Yep. Looks like Norman Bates. "A boy's best friend is his mother".
