Why does the Bush administration hate the US workforce?
U.S. Rushes to Change Workplace Toxin Rules
Political appointees at the Department of Labor are moving with unusual speed to push through in the final months of the Bush administration a rule making it tougher to regulate workers' on-the-job exposure to chemicals and toxins.
The agency did not disclose the proposal, as required, in public notices of regulatory plans that it filed in December and May. Instead, Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's intention to push for the rule first surfaced on July 7, when the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) posted on its Web site that it was reviewing the proposal, identified only by its nine-word title.
. . . .
The department's speed in trying to make the regulatory change contrasts with its reluctance to alter workplace safety rules over the past 7 1/2 years. In that time, the department adopted only one major health rule for a chemical in the workplace, and it did so under a court order.
ldzppln @ 6:
How would they like it if we made their workplace a little less safe. They don't really need the secret service, do they?
The Pickens Plan
Do you all remember when Harry Reid said in April of 2007 that we were losing in Iraq? The repugs, and many Dems were all over him and he has been associated with that remark ever since. Well, this tidbit comes from McCain's interview with Katie Couric the other day:
“Couric: Sen. Obama also told me, Sen. McCain, that the money spent on those additional troops, on the surge, might have been more effective had it gone to Afghanistan or even to a better energy policy in the United States. What’s your response?
McCain: The fact is we had four years of failed policy. We were losing. We were losing the war in Iraq. The consequences of failure and defeat of the United States of America in the first major conflict since 9/11 would have had devastating impacts throughout the region and the world.”

PASS IT AROUND
I haven't researched the guy, but is anyone wondering if McCain might pick T. Boone Pickens as his running mate? Pickens is running an ad on MSNBC that looks notoriously like a campaign ad, and I can't help but wonder if it is (a) Picken's way of soliciting McCain for the VP slot, and/or (b) an end-run-around-election-laws self-paid advertisement used to introduce Pickens to the U.S. before he is named as the VP nominee. I saw an interview clip with Pickens where he stated that, while he didn't agree with the full gamut of McCain's policies, he is a life long Republican and would be voting for McCain.

Keith Olbermann on MSNBC
Inside the McBrain
Ok, I'm too busy to blog extensively these days, but if I've been paying attention, McCain and his McCampaign people have decided to communicate to the public...........
(a) Barack Obama's position against increased drilling on American lands or off American shores is the cause of high gas prices.
(b) Allowing oil companies to begin the process of such increased drilling, the fruits of which will be owned by those companies and sold on a world oil market just like the rest of the planet's waning supply of oil, will magically bring the cost of gasoline down to the prices the preceded the Iraq war.
(c) If you don't believe (b), just ask the oil companies, and their word will prove it to you.
(d) All good things in Iraq are the result of the surge, including events that preceded it.
(e) Only John McCain had the courage to support the surge despite common political wisdom that it would cost him the election, which, in turn, means he deserves to win the election.
(f) We have won the war in Iraq. Obama's insistence that the troops come home within a year and a half indicates his unwillingness to recognize that we have won in Iraq. Therefore, we must stay there.
(g) Failing to understand the basic differences between Sunni Muslims, Shia Muslims, al Qaeda, Hezbollah, Hamas and each of their respective relations with Iran in no way undermines McCain's knowledge of how to fight the war on terror.
(h) The fact that world leaders, including the Iraqis, have acknowledged that Obama's judgment and plans vis-a-vis Iraq are not just sound, but desirable, in no way bolsters the argument that Obama is qualified to become the commander-in-chief. The fact that McCain was shot down in Vietnam decades ago proves that he is qualified to become the commander-in-chief.
(i) To question the latter assertion in (h) is to denigrate McCain's actual military service in Vietnam, to Swiftboat him.
(j) Czechoslovakia remains a major player on the world stage, and Iraq borders Pakistan.
(k) McCain's greatest asset is his understanding of foreign policy.
To continue to assert such claims, the McCain camp is betting that by November, enough Americans will believe them for McCain either to win the election or to steal it without being overly conspicuous.
Please tell me that even Americans aren't that fucking stupid.

the biggest problem is our current, aging nukular implementation. essentially, the radioactivity poisons everything, and I mean everything, including the 'containment' and they are talking $3ooMil at least per reactor. the radioactivity also breaks down everything, and I mean everything at the subatomic level, so ther is decay at the subatomic level.
any proposed nuclear solution will pretty much guarantee the slow poisoning of this country on a far greater scale.

Big GOP Donor Faced Trouble Back Home - http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/22/AR200807...
"For two years, Berkman had been battling his investment partners after admitting that he had lent himself $5 million of their money without telling them. A civil fraud case against him was about to go to trial. Berkman continued to raise money for McCain. He and his wife have donated $50,000 to Republican candidates and party committees this election cycle, including a $28,500 check to the Republican National Committee's Victory Fund on May 29 to support McCain's bid. Berkman's political generosity has angered his former investors, who prevailed in court but have not seen a penny of the $28 million in civil damages that a jury awarded them."

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep John Conyers Plans Bush IMPEACHMENT Substitute - http://www.daily.pk/world/worldnews/84-worldnews/5929-house-judiciary-co...
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. John Conyers said his panel will explore a variety of George W. Bush controversies, including manipulation of prewar Iraq intelligence. Rebuffing Dennis Kucinich’s calls for impeachment hearings on George W. Bush, the House Judiciary Committee instead will hear testimony about Bush’s “imperial presidency” and several of his administration’s scandals.

The Religious Right's Early Matriarch - http://www.talk2action.org/story/2008/7/23/143638/021
Elizabeth's anti-Semitic pronouncements are legendary. David Duke praises them on his web site. Ms. Dilling believed that Albert Einstein was a Communist, as well as just about anyone who did not agree with her. She even wrote a book claiming that Franklin Roosevelt was a "Red," which to her was the word she often used for Communists.
She was close friends with Charles Lindberg, as both sought to stem the tide of the nation's commitment to rescue England and Europe from Nazi Germany. In her opinion, the problem did not come from Germans - the problems all had a root in Jewish groups who were ruining the world. She spoke to students at the University of Chicago years later in her life and told the students it was a Red school.
She then defended Fascism to the audience. She also believed the YMCA was a secret Communist organization. She was truly a matriarch for the movement, and her legacy, if not her books, continues to inspire a new host of right wing fringe types. Roy Carlson said that Elizabeth Dilling considered Hitler an angel.
So basically....she was a modern day con-servative right wingnut back in that time...

Barack Obama and the Beijing Olympics, against them before he was for them.
Advertising Age: It’s official. Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign will be among the TV sponsors of NBC Universal’s Olympics coverage. In the first significant network-TV buy of any presidential candidate in at least 16 years, the Obama campaign has taken a $5 million package of Olympics spots that includes network TV as well as cable ads.
According to NBC’s political file, the campaign had initially requested information about 500,000, $2 million and $4 million package of Olympics spots. The network also offered the candidate a $10 million package.
Just two weeks ago: Obama says he wouldn't attend Olympics opening ceremony
"In the absence of some sense of progress, in the absence of some sense from the Dalai Lama that there was progress, I would not have gone," the presidential candidate told reporters at a news conference.
Obama previously has called on the Republican president to boycott the ceremonies.
Specifically, he criticized the administration for not being “aggressive in encouraging the Chinese government to make serious concessions”.
Aggressive action indeed.
The Chinese will love this next American President. Inexperienced, unprincipled and arrogant.

Dear Richard Lewis and like-minded US "reasonable" citizens:
We (US citizens) have been living inside an empire for...
2008-1776 = 232
... 232 years now AND STILL we kid ourselves that "it's OUR country" and that all we need is "a reasonable man" as US Emperor (aka POTUS) to make everything just and pure like it was back in the good ol' days that never were.
Keep watching and arguing about US TeeVee, everybody. It will keep you out of trouble and reality. (Sorry about your bad back, Mr. Lewis, that keeps you out of the streets and restricted to casinos.)
Good emperor or bad emperor?
Who should I spend hours and hours and how much bandwidth obsessing about for the next four months? Who will I spend 5 minutes voting for in November?
Who will I be having to pressure etc. after November to ACTUALLY get US troops out of Iraq AND Afghanistan?
Will it be good emperor (50,000 left US troops in Iraq and the balance rearranged into Afghanistan's "good war"-- what a fraud) or bad emperor (different rhetoric but the same result)?
Who can know such things? How can one make such decisions?
What I love about Richard Lewis is that's not an act. That's really him.

I REALLY hate that term 'lower classes'. I find it hard to believe that someone like G. W. Bush could be considered to be of a 'higher class'' than I am. Considering that his family has a long history of treason, basically makes most of it's money by killing people (both foreign AND American), and are proven thieves, I will never consider him to be of a superior 'class'.
If the phrase were 'middle earners' or something along those lines, it would be a lot less offensive. The whole Class System sounds like something out of the Dark Ages. What's next? Are we going to be calling people Serfs and Slaves?
George and the rest of the thieving, murdering, lying, Bushies, want to be considered royalty. That might be okay for some countries, but this is AMERICA.
The Bush family should craw back under the rock they oozed out from.
Mc Cain hasn't been asked about this, either:
Iraq has been such a 'surging' success, the Iraqi government had to disband their Olympic Committee and won't be able to participate in the Bejing Olympics. Many of them have been targeted and killed along with many of their coaches and star athletes.
Wereas in 2004, the Iraqis did participate and win a medal, without any of their members being killed.
Not so much a victory for the Iraqi's, eh John??
But it gets worse. Mitt Romneys old buddies at the IOC, angered by the government taking such a drastic step - went out of their way to announce that Iraq is "banned" from participating. This is after years of the USOC interfering in Iraq's governance of it's own teams - 30 members suddenly disappeared after the invasion, and just in time for the US led new committee elections - to whom Maliki gave a half a million dollars.. The Iraqis claimed they received no help for their money, and felt the new Committee was more corrupt than the old - at least they qualified and won medals.
Hmmmm, where have we heard that story??
A new government, not yet functional, is being blamed for taking independent action to close down what it believes is a corrupt organization??
Those words are right out of Bush and Mitts' mouth angered mouths, not an 'independent and autonomous mouth.

It's kinda funny that out of all these comments only two people even mentioned Richard Lewis. This clip is just more evidence I made the right decision in tuning out MSNBC and Olbermann months ago.
Swampfox/Tyree - why would you change your name because those who post here don't like that you are not an Obama supporter? My take - shame on those who don't respect your position. There are plenty of reasons not to support Obama and many of us don't. I can't possibly support McCrazy or any republican so this election is leaving many of us with no one to support. After never missing a vote for 40 years this is a real problem - the only hope is a VP pick by Obama that will draw me back somewhat but I can't imagine who that would be.

Sigh! I'll explain this slowly so I won't have to repeat myself. It's a little thing called Google ads (and/or similar software). It works by searching for keywords in the pages text. It can't tell the difference between us complaining or waxing poetically about something. All it knows is that "ethanol" was mentioned twenty plus times in a day.probably by guys like you Incidentally that's why this page has ads for John McCain just above articles that ream him. So unless you want to have John waste his time and resources selling his own advertising space...

I totally agree. Why does this man even have a career? I, too, would be hard-pressed to pay to listen to him, it's bad enough when it's free.
Johnny2Bad @ 142
If only!! Really, can you think of anyone alive that could make a difference? I am really sad to think that I cannot vote for either of these men. I've only voted republican once in my life and that was for mayor and only because they were both snakes and I wanted my damn street cut thru so I made a deal and by gosh, he did it. I still worry that it was a "going to hell" move on my part.
Perhaps more to the point on the Iraqi sheiks 'loyalty'. Did I imagine it or wasn't that about the time we started buying their loyalty by funding their otherwise recalcitrant militias??
I hear you brother.
Do you ever find yourself at some social function and you have promised your spouse, friend, or associate that you will not bring up politics? So there you are among all of these people and no one is saying anything. They all promised themselves that they wouldn't bring up politics. So you're cruising the room, bored to tears, you make a little small talk here and there when suddenly you over hear someone say something political. You steer in that direction, not to interfere, just to listen. You're curious what they think about what's happening to our country. You look around for your wife, relative, friend and they have you in their sights. They sense that you may be taking the bait, but they are deep into that day's "One Life to Live," so they flash you one of those, "You better not be doing what I think you're doing," looks. You regain your composure, but then in between the music, the sounds from the kitchen, ice hitting glass, twenty conversations just distant enough to sound like mumbling, you hear a word of criticism, just as you asked yourself, "Doesn't anyone care about what happened today." Suddenly, your heart begins to race as you casually draw nearer to the sound of defiance and disgust. Then you hear it, the sweet sound of an offended American. Damn, the voice you heard is talking about important news; intrusions on our rights, the arrogance of ignoring the law, the concept of "retroactive immunity" (also known as the 'get out of jail' free card) or any other disrespect toward the citizens of the country and the Constitution. You stop to offer a thought about a related insult and expand upon their experience and you're hooked. At first there are only three or four of you talking, then a fifth, six, and a seventh join in. From across the room it appears that the group you are with is enjoying itself. When suddenly the reality sinks in and whoever you're with moves quietly and casually in the direction of the group. All of you believe that since there are so many now engaged in sharing their distaste for what is happening in our country that the spouses, friends, whoever will either have to join the conversation or slink away in disgust as they rejoin their discussion about who the greatest dancers of all time have been.
You feel relieved, the pressure is temporarily off. And you begin to bond with your new friends or at least those who you have discovered a sense of community with. You glance around the room and there is the person you came with starring directly into your eyes. From the high of shared feelings you suddenly feel another shared feeling from across the room. Due to the distance you're uncertain whether the chill you feel in the air is because someone changed the temperature setting, or is it pity you're feeling waft across the room for your shameful digression into your compulsion. Is it an urgent desire to leave that you feel from across the room? Whatever it is it demands your attention so you move away from "them".
On the ride home you feel the zeal of organized dissent peal away from your consciousness. The need to be a rebel within a rebellion evaporates as you contemplate the chores waiting for you at home. By the time you reach home you explain to your friend or partner for the evening that he or she has nothing to worry about, because you did not "lose it". You maintained proper decorum as you shared the news of the day, and that no one will remember what you had to say anyway. Secretly you remember the pain, the searching, the communication, and then your mind drifts back to your need for rest before tackling your personal responsibilities in the days ahead. Your sleep is restless and you wake the next day feeling that you left something unsaid or undone, and that there is something you should be doing now. Then you begin your chores as you contemplate the beginning of the work week and the memory of being part of something important. The memory is replaced by your need to fulfill your responsibilities in the coming weeks, months, and years ahead. You regain your normal perspective, the dream of freedom fades and all is well once more except for the anxious feeling hidden in the recesses of your mind that you should be doing something, "but you don't know what it is; do you, Mr. Jones?"
