Thanks for the linky love, Mike honey! You're the best.

Clear majority in the Senate...2/3rd Majority in the House...and a Democratic occupant in 1600 Pennsyslvania Avenue.

Remember who said it first. ; 0 )

Did Obama snub U.S. troops in Afghanistan to shoot baskets for publicity pictures?

Answer: No.

Another reich-winger proved to be a liar.

kudos to Blue Gal, exposing the corporate-teet suckling by the DNC is very important.

we need more than just a switch from an "R" to "D", we need real change. and bucking the corporatocracy is CRUCIAL in order to make such a change. democracy is starting to smell of death.

honestly, this is insanely embarrassing for the DNC.

votes for sale! votes for sale!

Sheer desperation. They haven't laid a glove on Obama yet. Even with all the negative crap in the MSM, his numbers remain firm...and he remains ahead.

The lead will grow over the summer. The discussion is now turning to the economy, and it will be the main topic for the remainder of the summer, untill the debates in Sept. or Oct. That is a topic on which the GOP has NO LEGS.

Obama is going to pull out the big guns soon, and HAMMER McCain and the GOP over jobs, corporate profiits, energy (Enron will be reinvoked, as will the oil company profits and video of the oil executives testimony before Congress), you'll see video on Katrina, on housing for the poor, healthcare, etc. etc. etc. I also fully expect McCain to step firmly on the third rail of politics...Social Security. He will be consumed, just as GWBush was.

egads. Cops gone wild. There have been two different incidents with New York cops over the last week: one cop tackling a bicyclist and a different cop beating the crap out of a guy with his baton.

One of the first Israeli historians to admit that Israel forced the Arabs off their land was Benny Morris, a professor of Middle Eastern history at Ben-Gurion University. Morris does not, however, think that it was a bad thing to kill other people and take their property. He only regrets that all of the Arabs were not driven out in 1948 and in 2004 recommended that those who remain be dealt with like animals, saying "Something like a cage has to be built for them…There is a wild animal there that has to be locked up in one way or another." In spite of views about Arabs and Muslims that most would consider extremist, Morris has been provided a bully pulpit by The New York Times to urge the United States to attack Iran before Israel is forced to stage a preemptive nuclear attack that would turn the country with its eighty million inhabitants into a "nuclear wasteland." It may well be the first time that the editors of a major American newspaper have given prominent space to someone who is openly advocating mass murder.

McCain skipped the troops

The problem here is that the McCain campaign was denied a visit to a military base under the same policy back in April. Of course, there was no outcry or false outrage from Brian Rogers at that time.

From CNN:

With Department of Defense rules prohibiting political campaigning on military bases, it was determined that in some cases McCain could visit the installations as a senator but could not engage in any political activity or have news media present.
McCain campaign officials said Thursday they intentionally did not campaign on military property.

"We follow the rules," said senior McCain adviser Steve Schmidt.

Because all three presidential candidates are sitting senators, DoD officials have privately noted for some weeks that the whole matter of drawing the line between Senate business and campaigning is sensitive.

A U.S. Army official told CNN there are no pending requests from any of the campaigns to visit Army bases at this time. He noted that Sen. Barack Obama recently visited Fayetteville, North Carolina, but did not go to Fort Bragg; and Sen. Hillary Clinton visited Killeen, Texas, but did not go to Fort Hood.

For his Wednesday visit to the U.S. Naval Academy -- of which he is a graduate -- McCain was allowed to make a political appearance at the academy's football stadium because it is privately owned property and is not owned or run by the U.S. military.

Earlier in the day, when McCain had breakfast with midshipmen on academy grounds, it was closed to the press and considered a private event.

The military spokesman points out that any U.S. senator could also request to visit the academy or any military installation.

But the Navy declined a McCain campaign request to speak at the Naval Aviation Museum at the naval base in Pensacola, Florida, because it is a military owned installation and is located on the base, the official said.

McCain did attend an airshow over the weekend at the Navy base in Meridian, Mississippi, because it was open to the general public. But he declined to answer political questions from reporters traveling with him.

Oppose H. Con. Res. 362 PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 29 July 2008

Our recent e-mail and phone call campaign is bearing fruit! On July 8, CNI e-mailed, asking you to contact your representatives about three critical issues affecting US policy in the Middle East:

* More diplomacy -- Support H. Con. Res. 321
* No naval blockade of Iran -- Oppose H. Con. Res. 362
* Conditions on aid to Israel -- No aid without freezing settlements and lifting checkpoints in the West Bank

CNI coordinated its grassroots efforts with several other groups concerned about our current Middle East policies. CNI's effort has produced over 1,200 letters to Congress, and it is having a real impact! Several key cosponsors of H. Con. Res. 362 (naval blockade of Iran) have removed their names from the bill, which is now "stalled" in the Foreign Affairs Committee. We are making real progress and now is the time to put the final nail in the coffin of H. Con. Res. 362.

House panel votes to cite Rove for contempt

By LAURIE KELLMAN – 40 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — A House panel Wednesday voted to cite former top White House aide Karl Rove for contempt of Congress as its Senate counterpart publicly pursued possible punishments for an array of alleged past and present Bush administration misdeeds.

Voting along party lines, the House Judiciary Committee said that Rove had broke the law by failing to appear at a July 10 hearing on allegations of White House influence over the Justice Department, including whether Rove encouraged prosecutions against Democrats.

The committee decision is only a recommendation, and it was unclear whether Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., would allow a final vote. Rove has denied any involvement with Justice decisions, and the White House has said Congress has no authority to compel testimony from current and former advisers.

The vote occurred as members of the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on allegations of administration wrongdoing ranging from discriminating against liberals at Justice to ignoring subpoenas and lying to Congress.

Answer: No.

Brad's got a point (on the Brad Blog link above). Liars (like Grover Norquist--and for that matter, Hannity, O'Reilly, Coulter) need to be confronted. I'm not talking about using aggression, but it isn't enough to try to refute them because the networks--even BBC and CBC--aren't set up to do anything but referee a brawl.

A lot of people on the left--myself included--have looked cynically at Obama including Republicans as economic advisers--as *ANY KIND* of advisers at all. But the more I think about it, the more I think he's onto something. Going to Iraq with Hagel--or praising Lugar in Indiana--or, doing what Brad said and meeting yesterday with Bernanke and Henry Paulsen--has a purpose. I'm starting to believe that he sees it: "Oh shit, we're all in a lot more trouble here than anyone has realized."

If we don't start building some bridges between thinking people--and yes, there are a few in the Republican party (I know, I'll be hanged for heresy for saying that--but look at the fact that both Hagel and Lugar spoke up fairly often against what Bush has been doing in Iraq)--if we don't, the "lying liars" are only going to get louder and hold more sway. They need to be stopped, and only joining forces against their unbelievable dishonesty can do it. People like Norquist don't have the good of the country in mind, but they have the power to persuade a lot of ill-informed people to hold irrational positions.

On another thread, Nicole was talking about the UU church shooting in Tennessee. Same thing. Advocating violence is *totally irresponsible and unacceptable,* but if it isn't vehemently ridiculed and rebuffed by people from all ideological backgrounds, the Ann Coulters, Pat Robertsons and Michelle Malkins of the world will have their way and incite chaos for their own aims--which is to set up a total power grab by people like them in order to manipulate the fear and disappointment others feel in a have-have not society.

Obama's cross-the-aisle behaviors, while ideologically disconcerting in places, may have a larger goal in its sights. I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt--as much as I still lament some of his positions.

Peace.

Why should this surprise? More than a decade later, people (liberals, I mean - you take this for granted with conservatives) still believe the lie that it was Arafat that caused the Oslo Accords to fail, instead of putting the blame where is belongs - on Clinton and Sharon.

As for the last, you should call them the LA and NY Timids, not Times, for hiring reich wing mouthpieces. If John Bolton's head lost the top 10 inches, it wouldn't make a bit of difference.
