By Nicole Belle Tuesday Jul 29, 2008 10:30pmWe've posted about artist Chris Jordan's work before. Here's his latest. It's an 8 foot by 25 foot mural in five panels showing the heading of the Constitution, rendered entirely with 83,000 pictures of Abu Ghraib prisoners, equal to the number of people who have been arrested and held at US-run detention facilities with no trial or other due process of law, during the Bush Administration's war on terror. This is really a powerful piece. I would love to see this work travel around the country and be shown (along with the explanation of what it shows) to schools. I cannot think of a better way to get the conversations started about what our country has become under the rule of the Bush Gang and how we can bring back our democracy...

As a work of art, it's quite impressive . But the Nazis collected (stole) art as well. Not for it's beauty, but for it's value . The only interest this administration would have in this piece would be resale price.
If you squint at it just right, you see a 3-D image of naked prisoner pyramid.
I'm wondering why it's helpful for McCain to compare Obama to people who are more recognized than him. I know Britney and Paris refuse to acknowledge their 15 minutes are up, but they'll still get more attention than someone old enough to be their great-grandfather. And wtf is up with that electricity tax bs? He's just looking for anything to attach the word "tax" to, since he's out of ideas.
The House finally voted to upgrade toy safety standards.
As we continue to advocate impeachment and justice for this illegal war, let us not forget that nearly the exact thing took place back in December of 1989 in Panama, under the first Bush. For those of you who would like to look at deja vu before it happened all over again, go to YouTube and watch the documentary "Panama Deception".
You will see a whole host of familiar faces, familiar "evidence" funneled through the media complete with warnings about an "evil doer" who poses a threat to our national security, and then the subsequent media-controlled and massaged images and information about the illegal invasion of a sovereign country directed by another president Bush.
Many here believe we invaded for democracy and to oust a dictatorial madman. Sound familiar?

The United States of America once one of the Greatest Nations in the World only to allow Bush/Cheney bring it down in 7 years. We the People didn't pay attention to the invasion from within our own country. We looked for a Foreign enemy never realizing the enemy was the President and Vice President. John McCain wants to continue the corrupt policies and finish off the USA. Obama wants change and better relationships with other countries. Americans have to choose between Obama or McCain. When America fought for it's freedom people of all color join in the fight. If we can put aside prejudice and racism we just might save our country. It’s basic math. Johnny has ten not so close friends who all want a full glass of Kool-Aid; however Johnny only has enough to make 5 glasses because he and his inner circle of friends all drank more than their share. So Johnny adds a 10 glass stimulus of water to the 5 cup mixture and hands his so-so friends the diluted Kool-Aid and tells them it’s full potency Kool-Aid and to drink hearty. Unsatisfied his 10 friends want another, All out of real Kool-Aid, Johnny then ads food coloring, sugar, along with another 10 glass stimulus of water and tells them it’s full potency Kool-Aid and drink hearty.

The mere idea that the US would criticize any country for it's human rights abuses is beyond funny, it's sick. Who remembers when we actually did have a moral footing to bring attention to other countries mistreatment of citizens? I'm saying after you forget about the slaughter of millions of natives, and after you forget about enslaving an entire race, and after you for get about treating one sex like property... Never mind, the current torturing and suspension of basic human rights by this regime is just a comma on the end of a very long, very depressing sentence.

is anyone trying to get the video of Maddow's smack down of Buchanan?,I hear MSNBC isn't posting that part of the show something Whitehouse.
I just thought I would share this with the group.
I took a look at several official videos (about 5 in all) from the McCain campaign and found something I found rather amusing. The top of Sen. McCain's head is never shown, unless it is a very wide shot, or if he's wearing a hat.
All close-ups either crop off the top of his head, or are shot from below head level looking up.
I know a little something about video taping and photography. Most women, from my experience, like to be shot from up high, looking down, so that if they have a double chin, it can't be seen and if they have a little pooch, their breasts hide it.
Most men, ESPECIALLY those that are balding, like to be shot from a lower angle, looking up, so that their bald spot and/or receding hair line cannot be seen, which is what I saw in all the McCain videos.
Watch the McCain videos (turn off the volume if necessary) but watch how he is framed.
Pretty entertaining, if you ask me.
Just throwing that out there because I thought it was funny.

Deal on a Security Agreement Is Close, Iraqis Say
By ALISSA J. RUBIN and STEVEN LEE MYERS
Published: July 31, 2008
BAGHDAD — Iraq and the United States are close to a deal on a sensitive security agreement that Iraqi officials said on Wednesday satisfies the nation’s desire to be treated as sovereign and independent.
The agreement, under intense scrutiny in both countries, sets the terms for the presence of American troops in Iraq. Negotiations had stalled a month ago largely over the Bush administration’s refusal to specify an intention to withdraw troops. While the current version does not specify any exact date, officials said, President Bush’s recent acknowledgment that withdrawal was an “aspirational goal” has revived the talks and pushed them closer to completion.
The emerging agreement, officials said, gives Iraqis much of what they want — most notably the guarantee that there would no longer be foreign troops visible on their land — and leaves room for them to discreetly ask for an extended American presence should security deteriorate.

It looks like Cindy Sheehan will be on the ballot against Nancy Pelosi. The Department of Elections is validating signatures and we should know by Friday if she made it.
Sheehan is really doing a great service to America. Even threatening, let alone if she takes, Pelosi's seat sends a strong message - "Politicians - you work for us, not corporate donors."
We have to fight. Cindy Sheehan is fighting.
BTW - I was for the longest time, since the beginning, a big Pelosi supporter. But people change. When she took impeachment "off the table" and then refused to block war funding, she lost my support. Same with Feinstein. She's changed about 8 years ago. It's clear to me that very few elected representatives, no matter how good their intentions going into politicis, are able to resist becoming servants of the U.S. corporate fascists and their lobbyists.

"The struggle for world domination will be fought entirely between us, between Americans and Jews. All else is facade and illusion. Behind England stands Israel, and behind France, and behind the intelligence agencies. Even when we have driven the Jew out of America, he remains our world enemy."
"I don't see much future for the Americans... It's a decayed country. And they have their racial problem, and the problem of social inequalities... My feelings against Americanism are feelings of hatred and deep repugnance... Everything about the behavior of American society reveals that it's Israelified. Stormy weather, NewScientist cover story looks at link between tornadoes and global warming - http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2008/7/30/11728/2124
FROM the start of 2008, something seemed amiss with the weather. During an unseasonably warm January, two tornadoes struck Kenosha County, Wisconsin, damaging 105 homes. It was only the second known January tornado strike in Wisconsin. Just a few days later, a tornado struck Vancouver in Washington - only the third January tornado in that state since 1950.
Then on 5 and 6 February, a storm system spawned 84 tornadoes across several southern states as their primary elections took place. Five of the tornadoes were powerful EF4s on the so-called Enhanced Fujita scale. The Super Tuesday outbreak was the worst for 23 years, and left 57 dead. Once again, it came unusually early in the year. Unusually warm weather seemed partly to blame.
By the end of that month, 2008 already seemed to be one for the record books. Altogether there were 148 tornadoes...

We can accomplish great things in creating green jobs, reversing climate change and maybe even developing a national high-speed railway service that provides an energy-efficient alternative to foundering airlines. But as the Associated Press reported last month, nearly 75 percent of the existing leases on federal lands held by petroleum companies are currently producing no oil. Those companies currently hold nearly 30 million acres dormant, according to the AP. Nobody in the federal government even knows whether any exploration has taken place over the past decade.
Perhaps Senator McCain should ask his friends in the industry why they aren’t exploring or producing on the leases they already control. A truthful answer would be that those leases count as financial assets whether productive or not—and adding to them enhances an oil firm’s bottom line.

Russia takes control of Turkmen (world?) gas - http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Central_Asia/JG30Ag01.html
From the details coming out of Ashgabat in Turkmenistan and Moscow over the weekend, it is apparent that the great game over Caspian energy has taken a dramatic turn. In the geopolitics of energy security, nothing like this has happened before. The United States has suffered a huge defeat in the race for Caspian gas. The question now is how much longer Washington could afford to keep Iran out of the energy market.
Curiously, the agreements reached in Ashgabat on Friday are unlikely to enable Gazprom to make revenue from reselling Turkmen gas. Quite possibly, Gazprom may now have to concede similar terms to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, the two other major gas producing countries in Central Asia. In other words, plain money-making was not the motivation for Gazprom. The Kremlin has a grand strategy.
Russia and China have a heavy agenda to discuss in energy cooperation far beyond the price of Turkmen gas supplies. But suffice it to say that Gazprom's new stature as the sole buyer of Turkmen gas strengthens Russia's hands in setting the price in the world gas (and oil) market.
An oil-based economy is doomed, we need to move to sustainable energy....soon...Russia will be playing catch up with us in 20 years....

Why Bush folded on Iran
Reality, of the military and petroleum-based variety, forced the administration to change course. Now Bush sounds like Obama.

"It was just a year ago that war with Iran seemed imminent. Last August David Wurmser, a major neoconservative figure who had just left Cheney's staff revealed that the vice president was talking about having Israel hit Iran's nuclear research facilities. At the same time, Afghanistan expert Barnett Rubin went public with what he was told by a Bush administration insider -- that Cheney would make a big push for a strike on Iran in the fall of 2007. Journalist Seymour Hersh reported that Cheney was attempting to reconfigure the Iraq war as a struggle with Iran. And, indeed, Cheney did make threats against Iran at institutions of the Israel lobby such as the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

Acts of War
By Scott Ritter
29/07/08 " TruthDig" -- - -The war between the United States and Iran is on. American taxpayer dollars are being used, with the permission of Congress, to fund activities which result in Iranians being killed and wounded, and Iranian property destroyed. This wanton violation of a nation’s sovereignty would not be tolerated if the tables were turned and Americans were being subjected to Iranian-funded covert actions which took the lives of Americans, on American soil, and destroyed American property and livelihood. Many Americans remain unaware of what is transpiring abroad in their name. Many of those who are cognizant of these activities are supportive of them, an outgrowth of misguided sentiment which holds Iran accountable for a list of grievances used by the U.S. government to justify the ongoing global war on terror. Iran, we are told, is not just a nation pursuing nuclear weapons, but is the largest state sponsor of terror in the world today.

William Wallace @ 27:
Oh I realize it goes back further - but I was reiterating the link between the Bush's, neocons and the thought that Iraq was a precedent-setting invasion based soley on the threat of "terror" or national security. It all ends the same way - we force feed "our" strongman to do our dirty work, and if the guy doesn't bend to "our" every wish and demand, he's ousted in either a bloody coup or by the CIA/military or both.
No wonder everyone loves us so much around the world.
Well, it's been my experience in my travels around the world while in the military that actually most everyone does like Americans, just not the policy makers.
All we are saying is GIVE IMPEACHMENT A CHANCE
Wow that graphic of the Constitution is partitioned
Just like toilet paper.
As Americans are struggling to keep their jobs, health insurance, homes and sanity the oil companies make record breaking profits.

HOUSTON - Exxon Mobil reported second-quarter earnings of $11.68 billion Thursday, the biggest quarterly profit ever by any U.S. corporation, but the results fell well short of Wall Street expectations and shares fell in premarket trading.
The world's largest publicly traded oil company said its net income for the April-June period came to $2.22 a share, up from $10.26 billion, or $1.83 a share, a year ago.
Revenue rose 40 percent to $138.1 billion from $98.4 billion in the year-earlier quarter.
Excluding an aftertax charge of $290 million related to an Exxon Valdez court settlement, earnings amounted to $11.97 billion, or $2.27 per share.
Analyst on average expected Exxon Mobil to earn $2.52 a share on revenue of $144 billion, according to a survey by Thomson Financial. The estimates typically exclude one-time items.
Exxon shares fell more than 2 percent, or $1.88, to $82.50 in premarket trading.

Well, if we're going to be obscure about it, how about a movie about the Wat Tyler Rebellion?
Just keep Mel Gibson away from it.
How about this guy?

I can't search youtube at work, but on Hardball last night(7/30) Rep.Barney Frank went all Jon Stewart and 'crossfired' Tucker Carlson. Absolutely shreaded him.

That's the boogeyman argument. That's all the Republicans have - fear.
Authoritarian lemmings willing to follow Milosevic's to Bush's off a cliff to save themselves from the eternal threat.
I'm not afraid.
What you could have said was, "It's amazing what massive political money from Haliburton, Blackwater, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, News Corp., General Electric, Goldman Sachs, Time Warner, Altria, Versizon, and on, and on, and on, will do to broaden one's odds of getting re-elected."

Smedley Butler? He had quite a distinguished career going in the US military, until he was passed over for a key promotion and then decided to carve out a lucrative second career bashing it. It's quite obvious his ultimate loyalty was to the almighty dollar.

It’s amazing what a security clearance will do to broaden one’s perspective of the dangers we face. ;)
That’s the boogeyman argument.

And no, not Mr. Hanky.
Christian terrorism. Lovely.
Wow - this is what art is - outrageous, truthful, confrontational and amazing. I'm blown away.
What's the source for the 83,000 number? Anyone know?
What a terrific use of this photos. Time does nothing to the effect these photos have on me. What have we done? Horrible.
83,000 Trials for Kidnapping, 83,000 Warcrimes trials, 83,000 Torture Trials, 83,000 Murder Trials.
This is the legacy of the NEO-United States.

Smedley Butler was a money grubbing opportunist... But he was no Traitor. That is reserved, for Prescott, Harriman, JP Morgan and all the bastards who attempted to over throw the government the LAST time they set up a depression.
