Since when do Republicans oppose routine auto maintenance?

Barack Obama reminded an audience yesterday that American consumers can save money and improve fuel efficiency by keeping their tires inflated and getting regular tune-ups. I thought this was just common sense, and one of those simple steps that everyone already knew about.

Apparently, Republicans have decided that it’s worthy of mockery.

“[Obama] suggested we put air in our tires to save on gas,” McCain told a group of voters. “My friends, let’s do that, but do you think that’s enough to break our dependence on Middle Eastern oil? I don’t think so.”

Well, Obama didn’t say we could break our dependence if we inflated our tires; he said we could save money and improve fuel efficiency. It won’t “break our dependence on Middle Eastern oil” if we open up more of America’s coastlines to oil drilling, either, but it’s suddenly become the basis for McCain’s entire energy policy.

But it seems Republicans really are worked up about this tire thing. Here’s Newt Gingrich on Fox News.

While Gingrich ranted, you could hear one of the Fox News personalities laughing a bit, as if the notion of routine auto maintenance, as a method of improving energy efficiency, was necessarily hilarious.

I feel like I’m missing something here.

Fortunately, Ben at TP set the record straight.

They're all such idiots. If Obama said 2 + 2 = 4 they'd say he was wrong about that too.

Mc Cant is proving himself to be a lying sack of Neo con crap everyday. He wont stick to the issues because he don't have any. All aboard the Crooked Crap Mc Dummy Express.

What's is a Newt, anyway?

Col Kilgore @ 2:

Mc Cant is proving himself to be a lying sack of Neo con crap everyday. He wont stick to the issues because he don't have any. All aboard the Crooked Crap Mc Dummy Express.

And that's how the Republicans win elections!

Republicans are critical thinkers! -NOT!

What every happened to "all of the above" ??

The McCain camp is stretching for things to try and use against Obama. Pure and simple. They've simply got nothing on him.

They tried using his name. No one bought it.

They tried using the fact that he went to a "Madrassa". It wasn't that HUUUGE!

They tried using the Iraq War.. that blew up in his face the minute Maliki decided to endorse Obama's plan.

Now they're going for his stance on inflating tires - and they're simply going to wipe out.

If Obama came out for something they agreed with they'd spin themselves into the ground trying to find a way to mock him for it.

You sillies... vehicle maintenance for these people IS something to mock! Most of these characters either, a) have a driver and a mechanic take care of these menial tasks for them, or b) they just trade the Mercedes every year, anyway!

McCain produces enough hot air to fill every tire in America.

newt has found his voice again, seems he's appearing more often. it's the voice of deception and dishonesty.
he should not be a professor of anything. every time i seem him he is lying.
he enjoys it. he revels in it and he doesn't see or care about the consequences to others.

The Republiscum party has been running on under-inflated tires for some time now so I'm not surprised at their response to this. I'm sure as soon as they figure out how to operate an air chuck they'll come around.

With so much hot air in blowhards like The Salamander, you'd think that keeping tires inflated would be no problem.

Hell, most would have enough leftover to add dual turbochargers to their Lincoln Towncars...

I love that the clip ends with, 'Hellooo Kirsten.' It kind of makes you wonder about the state of Newt's third marriage.
Does Newt really think that McCain should get in a debate with Obama about Energy? Somehow I don't think the American people will be impressed with McCain's willingness to drill in ANWAR and off our coasts and also along the Pakistan-Iraq border. He probably wants to drill for oil in Czechoslovakia as well. Maybe Rhodesia and East Pakistan, even.

Here we go. The Repub Party know how to mock Dem Party ideas, but the Dems are too afraid to mock Repub ideas. So the Dem candidates just change their positions to Repub positions (e.g. oil drilling) and are seen as Repub-lite.

Will the Dem party get rid of those god-awful strategists already and go on the attack? Or will we see another John Kerry campaign unfold before our eyes?

I vaguely remember a radio/tv PSA (featuing Old Man Bush 41) that was on this very point. Mr. Read my Lips stated that in order to save money at the pump, everyone should have their tires properly inflated. Maybe that would zip Newt's lips (for about 10 to 20 seconds).

McCain is soooooo out of touch. I guess when your wife has her own plane and you have millions, you don't have to worry about those things.
The first thing they teach you about saving gas is regular maintaince and keeping your tires inflated properly.

Inflated tires are like tax cuts. The lower your taxes (and the lower your tire pressure) the more efficient the whole system is. Can't you people see this? Let all the air out of your tires, call a tow truck and buy a new SUV and let some of the air out of those tires. It's what keeps the economy hummering along. Do you not understand that if your tires are properly inflated, the terrorists win? Stop whining, damn you. And don't go near that schrader valve (unless its to let air out)!

Energy efficiency is a terrifying prospect to people who make their money whoring for oil companies.

Republicans HATE fuel efficient cars. They've made their feelings very clear.

http://www.arktimes.com/Articles/ArticleViewer.aspx?ArticleID=16793327-1...

Here's an interesting fact, at one time John McCain wanted to raise standards for fuel efficient cars. You don't hear him talking about that anymore, do you?

McCain has been bought and sold by Bush and Cheney. He's of no use to anyone save the criminals.

You mean these guys don't do routine maintenance on their cars? Don't they listen to Click and Clack the car guys on NPR?

The republicans are expertly using crappola to convince the uneducated to vote for them. While it is great that the Democrats are the thinking persons party, there seems to be more dum dums that will buy the Republican crap than there are smart people who's stomachs turn when they hear it.

Obama had better start pounding away on McCain or it is going to turn into a close election.

p.s. All democrats should stop shopping at Walmart, or go in and fill up their cart and then leave it in mens wear.

And this is how the Dems will lose in November...because we play by the rules and the Republicans' strategy is to make fun, insult, denigrate, and it works! It really makes me annoyed with Americans who fall for it.

Gingrich/Hannity obviously know better than Pirelli...But then again these two chumps are wrong on everything else...So one more thing wont make much difference.

Under inflated tyres create more resistance when your car is moving, which means your engine has to work harder, so more fuel is used and more CO2 emissions are produced. You will also experience reduced performance and control of your vehicle.

Tyre pressures therefore need to be checked

Either get down and dirty as Rove(TURD BLOSSOM) or get the hell out of the race. The REPUBLICANS do every FOUR YEARS, and the DEMOCRATIC PARTY loose. Either play as dirty as they do or just get out. The CORPORATE CONTROLED MEDIA is going to see McCain in the White HOUSE COME NOVEMBER, so lets DIRTY McCain as much as we can. Look at the joke that Pelosi,Hoyer,Reid DiFi are they a laughing stock.

Newt's right. Auto maintainance is socialism because it helps the environment.

There's a chapter in Marx's Communist Manifesto about auto maintainance, and Engels wrote exclusively about it.

mccain is a typical military lifer. chain of command. take orders from your superiors. don't question any of it. he's always been a follower. that's why he sucks up to bush and does everything his deplorable campaign people tell him to do.

Using more oil is the only way to use less oil. Come on people, that's just common sense.

Once again reich-wingers prove they have zero concept of facts and reality

Oh, come on. Millionaires like Newt and Limpballs and Hannity don't care if the common man might save a few bucks a month if they performed proper vehicle maintenance, drove a little slower, and don't accelerate as much. Heck, that's just common sense Obama was espousing, and who needs common sense? Certainly not the repugs!

It's a shame the debate about drilling will not happen now, because proposing drilling does not even make capitalist sense.
Opening the coastal areas and alaska for wind turbine parks and investing in turbine manufacturing would actually lower the price at the pump more than the drilling... not to mention add manufacturing and tech jobs.

I found this by doing a minute of research on the web:

6. Properly Inflate Your Tires."

I'll bet there are dozens more statements like this from official sources. Maybe even Bush's Dept. of Transportation? Perhaps we should compile a huge list and send it to McCain, Gingrich, the boys and girls at Faux News, and the rest of the media.

Q: Since when do Republicans oppose routine auto maintenance?

A: Since it threatened to get in the way of more record corporate profits.

Obviously, the Repugs look even dumber for trying to make political hay out of this tire thing. But, really Obama is just trying to help folks keep some of their hard-earned money in their own pockets by doing things that are common sense - something that not too many Americans seem to have these days.

I think it's wise for Obama not to go negative and to soft pedal now. It's only August 2, and while most of us who post at C&L, etc., read a lot and listen to the news a lot, many people are very busy - working 2 or more jobs, caring for kids, on summer vacation, etc., so, they're not paying that much attention. My neighbors, for instance, haven't a clue about the back and forth between the campaigns. I'm not saying that's nescesarily good, just that's the way it is.

Theres' plenty of time after the conventions, closer to the elections, when Obama can use all of the ammunition McKeating has left on the trail....

Oil Executives and Republican Toadies to America: Silly American Peons, how dare you take the food from our trust fund babies' mouths by performing laughable routine maintenance?

Actually wd, good news is that the Chesapeake Bay might very well be sprouting some windfarms quite soon. The question now is overcoming any NIMBYism (chronic in this region) and how to integrate it into the grid...

Still, until they resurrect the electric car, these windfarms not yet address transportation issues.

Newt Gingrich = Karl Rove with better people skills.

Total asshat.

Newt.

Out of the mouth of babes:
My 7 year old ask us why Americans make fun of smart people and elect people like Bush. ( She means McCain)

Every one who sees Gingrich does not see the "ex-Speaker of the House" or even hear what he says, they see a disgraced, run-out-of-town-in-shame adulterer, liar, and unprincipled hack who was carrying on an affair of his own as he dogged President Clinton for his infidelity. The only place he is welcome is FOX where his stink can't rub off, but fits in with the FOX outhouse.

While Gingrich ranted, you could hear one of the Fox News personalities laughing a bit, as if the notion of routine auto maintenance, as a method of improving energy efficiency, was necessarily hilarious.

These fools probably find the whole notion of high gas prices hilarious and I'll bet it's been a long, long, time since these rich pigs have ever put gas into their own tank, air into their own tires or even drove the car to a mechanic for a tune-up.

Hey, HaggisFarmer (#23 above).

Isn't Pirelli an Italian company? And, that's a link to a site in the U.K. They're all socialists over there, are they not?

I wouldn't believe anything they say about tire pressure....it's not a recommendation coming from the U.S......it's a socialist plot to take over the world, conserve more energy, and not give the oil companies more money!

This is right out of the Bill O'Reilly playbook. The insane strawman gambit.

Commentator @ 34:

Q: Since when do Republicans oppose routine auto maintenance?

A: Since it threatened to get in the way of more record corporate profits.

Idiotic. Republicans hardly oppose routine auto maintenance. But when a politician throws comparisons and numbers out of his ass and overstates their total benefits for his political gain, he can expect to be called out on it. Obama has no way of knowing what production volumes could be expected from lifting the ban on OCS moratoriums, so therefore its impossible to claim these taking these what should be common sense fuel savings actions would equal or exceed the future offshore oil volumes.

Do both, like McCain said. And now what Obama is saying too after yesterday's flip-flop on offshore drilling.

Hey, where is this car? That looks like a perfectly good passenger-side Mustang windwing! Now if I just had the rest of the car to put it on...

And this is the party the Obama apologists say we should trust to make concessions on the alternative energy credit and other pro-environment legislation, 'cause you know, they'll give on that if we gives them that thar off shore oil riggamajiggers.

This story totally convinces me the republicks will compromise [sarcasm].

Of course they agree with keeping tires properly inflated and regular tune-ups. That's why they're trying mocking with this. As Zenrage said they got nothing else. Barack Obama has been vetted more(especially by the Republicans) by now than any man in history, and all they have is mockary and catcalls. It might work if all our corporate "News" media plays along. otherwise they got nothing else.
One of the funniest parts of this attack is, how long do you think it's been(if ever) since Newtie Gingrich, old John McCain or any of these other Rightwing hecklers have checked their own tire pressure? Or anything else the rest us have to keep track of and take care of every day? If you saw the "John McCain in the grocery" video you wondered which of Cindy's employees did the grocery shopping(one of the cooks probably). With this story you wonder which driver or chauffer is in charge of auto maintenance for the vehicle fleets of these old, rich, out of touch farts.

Recently I've discovered that whenever I see Newt's, McCain's, and Cheney's faces I begin projectile vomiting. It feels like I've been tied to chair in an adult theater with movies that show their asses as they go about their day screwing Americans at every opportunity.

Do not let your children go to a public restroom alone. There may be a republican in there tapping his foot while sitting on the stool with his pants around his ankles. I'll bet that made your stomach feel a little upset, didn't it? Now imagine them tapping their feet while fondling their genitals on a stage behind a podium or at a desk while on camera. Projectile vomiting - right?

We live in a nation where the government and corporations hire lawyers to undermine the rule of law, contrive legal and legislative actions to protect themselves from prosecution for criminal acts, and initiate corrupt prosecutions designed to remove political opponents and others who resist or stand in the way of their criminal plans.

“You know something is happening, but you don’t know what it is, do you Mr. Jones.” - Bob Dylan

Historically, this type of behavior by lawyers would be cause to disbar them. Combine this with the use of “frivolous lawsuits” to mean any attempt to hold responsible parties accountable, while ignoring this misuse of the courts for purposes that make a mockery of the rule of law and one can understand the current moral and legal climate in America. It is a cruel and deranged game played by those who gained the public trust for the sole purpose of disadvantaging the American public. We are all “suckers” now.

Where are the other Democratic "leaders"? Why haven't we heard or seen Hillary, John Kerry, Joe Biden, and some of the others? When will the DNC start running ads with the facts like they are posted at TP? When will the media stand up for the American people and publicize the facts?

If Obama is expected to respond to each and every one of these absolutely insulting comments, he will lose. He has to stay on message. His message is what America needs and wants.

Where are the others?

Obama may be the true conservative in this campaign, which is why pseudo-conservatives mock him. Expect the next McCain ad to portray Obama as the black Michelin Man.

D'oh! I meant Newt: like the mythical burning Salamander, but it’s flames are fueled exclusively on crude oil obtained by needless drilling

Here it is, from fueleconomy.gov, a joint effort by George Bush's Department of Energy and his EPA:

Gas Mileage Tips==>Driving More Efficiently==>Keeping Your Car in Shape

Keep Your Engine Properly Tuned
Fuel Economy Benefit: 4%
Equivalent Gasoline Savings: $.16/gallon

****

Keep Tires Properly Inflated
Fuel Economy Benefit: up to 3%
Equivalent Gasoline Savings: up to $.12/gallon

Now, do a little math and multiply these figures by the billions of road miles traveled and millions (billions?) of gallons of gasoline used by motor vehicles in the U.S. each year, and you will see some gigantic savings.

Quick, pass this around before the Bush Administration removes this from its government websites.

ABC: Obama: "Okay, yes, I was talking about race"

Post a link where Obama "admitted" his comments were about race.

I did. 4th and 5th paragraphs into the ABC article...

But Obama also admitted that, despite what Obama senior adviser Robert Gibbs told reporters, there was a racial dimension to his Missouri remarks in which he said McCain and the Republicans would make an issue of the fact that he doesn't look like presidents who have been on the dollar bills.

"I don’t think it’s accurate to say that my comments have nothing to do with race," Obama said.

Haven't you been reading all the blogs' retractions on it today, oncall?

Here is the entire quote from the Obama's "admission". Maybe it is too complex for some to understand (yes, Dennis that means you).

"I don’t think it’s accurate to say that my comments have nothing to do with race," Obama said. "Here's what I was saying and I think this should be undisputed: That I don’t come out of central casting, when it comes to presidential races. For a whole range of reasons. I’m young, I’m new to the national scene, my name is Barack Obama, I am African American, I was born in Hawaii, I spent time in Indonesia. I do not have the typical biography of a presidential candidate. What that means is that I’m sort of unfamiliar and people are still trying to get a fix on who I am, where I come from, what my values are and so forth in a way that might not be true if I seemed more familiar."

"And so what I think has been an approach [of] the McCain campaign is to say, 'He’s risky,'" Obama continued. "To try to divert focus from the fact that they don’t have any new ideas when it comes to fixing the economy or dealing with health care or dealing with education. … Let me be clear: In no way do I think that John McCain’s campaign was being racist; I think they’re cynical. And I think they want to distract people from talking about the real issues. And so it’s of a piece with the Britney/Paris ad or the most recent Web site, or the allegation that somehow I wouldn’t go visit the troops unless I had reporters with me, which every reporter who was on the trip knows is absolutely not true."

I don't know alot about Rasmussen, but what I've heard indicates they're a conservative group, the New Republic definitely is hard-right. Baronne I never heard of and ABC is owned by Disney Corp (a conservative corporation) and I'm not interested in what mouskateers think on polls. I think what I heard about Rasmussen included their being a part of Newsmax.

Folks would save on gas if they quit driving like fools, too. Anyone else notice how often the rudest stupidest drivers out there seem to have "W 04" stickers on their backsides?

Right next to the little plastic fish.

Newt - Shut up, go home, morph, become human.

Fox "News" - More irrelevant by the day.

It's hot today. Fuck these retards.

Isn't it time for somebody to point out that the majority of imported oil is from our neighbors, both north and south?

arent these the guys who are about personal responsibility when they whine aboue entitlement programs but when they can make an extra buck for exxon it goes right out the window

Does Newtie have an email address so we all could write to tell him he has his head where the sun don't shine?? TV, newspapers, magazines, everyone is talking and writing about how to get more miles per gallon and keeping tires filled to the right tire pressure is at the top of the list and even nitrogen in tires is the big thing now.

Didn't Bush a few weeks ago say we should turn off our air conditioners at home when we were gone. That is supposed to help gas prices?

let me say this...obama is being too nice

the mccain campaign is "cynical, but not racist"

they may not be racist, but they sure as shit are playing on race fear

why else do you make an ad showing obama putting his face on mount rushmore and the dollar bill?

why else do you make an ad painting him as arrogant and a false messiah?

why else do you make an ad about him being a celeb and insert vids of two white female semi celebs?

You all are a bunch of idiots if you think properly inflating your tires will fix our energy problem. Of coursre inflating your tires will save you a little bit of money but that's not the point. The point is that this country is suffering, people can barely afford to feed their families and Barrack Obama tells them to inflate their tires and get a tune up. He is completely out of touch with reality, he's an elitist, and America is finally starting to realize that.

Obama has not real experience! His plans to raise taxes will do nothing but hurt the economy! Look at California, the governator raised taxes on businesses and the wealthy and that state is falling apart. No companies want to be there which means loss of jobs, and no wealthy want to be there which means less money in the economy.

With the loss of money and jobs everyone is trying to sell there home so they can move to a better state. All of the houses that have gone up for sale so quickly have caused a surplus of homes and now the value of homes is dropping. I know Arnold is a republican but don't try to put California's problems on the republican party. California is falling apart because of Arnolds liberal economic policies.

If you want a nationalized healthcare system, higher taxes and the government to take care of everything for you than move to Europe. This is America. I'm tired of seeing my country slowly torn apart by you liberal idiots.

Tire-gate will be 2008's Invented-the-Internet-gate

Let's do the math on this tune up idea. The average person puts 12,000 a year on his car.

12,000 miles at 30 m.p.g. = 400 gallons of gas per year.
400 gallons of gas at $4/gallon = $1,600

Let's assume that person got a tune up and inflated his tires so that he now gets 35 m.p.g.

12,000 miles at 35 m.p.g. = 363 gallons of gas per year.
363 gallons of gas at $4/gallon = $1,454

$1,600 - $1,454 = $146/year in savings

But we need to subtract the $75 for the tune-up which gives you a net savings of about $71/year or 1.5 tanks of gas. This is not including the 2 hours you spend at the mechanic waiting.

What will $71/year buy? Not much. It definitely won't make me feel better about $4/gallon gasoline.

Obama is a joke! When will you wake up and realize he has no new idea's to 'change' anything. It's all the same ideas liberals have been pushing for years. They haven't worked in the past and no amount of 'hope' will make them work in the future.

I just want to say I think you're all retarded and I hope you actually take some time to look into the issues before you cast your vote in November.

Thanks for the advice. Now go away and post where your comments may mean something to people without a brain. I am sure you did not read any of the facts regarding how much oil we would save if as a country we all worked together to keep our cars maintained (and that means the right amount of air in the tires too), but for you, RWC, working together is beyond anything you could even imagine. If you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem. Please go away.

If 100 million Americans did what you say it would conserve 3.7 billion gallons of gasoline a year.

This is the smear tactic. Take a statement that can be misinterpreted and
Repeat
Repeat
Repeat
Repeat
Repeat!

Obama must begin countering EACH of these lies with a clear counter statement and an attack of his own:

Sympathize with McCain ....
Kindly saying how at McCain's age, it's understandable that he doesn't understand what Obama has said, or remember when the Anbar Awakening occurred.
It's sad that McCain is unable to distinguish the nuances between strategy and tactic in Iraq
or even remember when the surge began,
or bless his heart, what a surge is! But I will not make age an issue in this campaign.

So it's no surprise that McCain imagines "artificial facts" that he puts inside his head.
And it is tragic when over 4000 of our brave men have to die for the artificial facts of the Bush administration...
It's time for Real CHANGE!!
And don't tell us that we can't make it happen America is a nation of ingenuity and brave people with ideas that have changed the world...
And we will continue to do so.
YES. We. CAN.

Yes reichwingers know how hard it is to put food on your family.

In all fairness, we would probably have jumped on Bush if he tried to sell that as a way to conserve.

It's true that you should watch your tire pressure, but as far as national security goes, it's up there with flossing your teeth.

Otay @ 15:

Say what you will, Bill Clinton was really good at fighting back.

LETS NOT GO THERE

IF YOU WANT TO PISS OF THE REPUBLICANS.... STAY ON MESSAGE....

AND THE MESSAGE IS..... his name is JOHN THE BUSH REPUBLICAN MCCAIN

I recall a Reagan commercial in the 1980s telling us to keep our tires inflated. Can anyone else recall this? I can't find this anywhere online... It makes total sense. I do it to this day as it makes a huge difference. If someone could find this Reagan commercial I think it would be a slap in the face to all of the neocons who hate Obama. Might even make mainstream press.

Let's face it...we're f#cked. Americans are idiots and will vote McCain out of fear, ignorance and racism. The same idiots that voted for Bush A SECOND TIME will also elect McCain. The lies and fear mongering of the right-wing media plus the flaccid villagers will make this possible. And when it's done, 80% won't give a f&ck because a new season of American Idol is here and Whoppers are 2 for $2 and thank god, abortion is illegal now. This is the country that we live in...time to accept it.

Bat-wing-con@110 Thanks so much, my friends and I have not had a good laugh like that for many a moon, the way you refuse to face history and cold facts is simply price-less, please we love slap-stick humor like that, would you be kind enough to offer us some more of your funny, out-look of history. why doesnt the obama campaign bring up the fact, that for years, the oil companies held leases and did not drill on that land or offshore???

why doesnt the obama campaign bring up the fact that for years, the oil companies fought against increasing domestic production?

why doesnt the obama campaign bring up the fact that the majority of crude drilled and processed in the state of california is sold to japan?

This is easy. One answer to all three questions: Because the Corporations OWN Obama. Al Gore proved you can't be telling those inconvenient truths...

Actually He DID say that oil companies own land that their not drilling on.

But here's what I find interesting. You're trying to blame Obama for the mistakes and criminal acts of the Republican criminals.

You, my friend, are a troll. You're just another slow witted liar, making up talking points (I understand that some of you are paid to do this) on any site or thread that speaks about Obama or any other democrats.

What also amazes me is that you think that people won't see you for what you are. You're a terrible liar.

The only person bought and owned by the NeoCons, and the oil companies are people like YOU. You know, the ones that go out and lie for them.

I forgot to add a link to Obama's comments about Oil companies, and the land they're not drilling on.

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/07/30/obama-calls-offshore-dri...

While I'm at it, why doesn't McCain mention that we're not drilling on that land? Why doesn't HE mentioned that we're selling our oil to Japan?

Why doesn't McCain (or Bush) mention that oil companies have been fighting against increasing domestic production for the past few decades?

The people who are bought and sold are the NeoCons, and the people who service them. Bush and Cheney are oil men. They have a huge stake in the oil industry (who are making record profits.... interesting). McCain is their new (Old and senile, but an accomplished liar.) acolyte.

Voting for McCain is simply voting for a third term for Bush. Nobody sane wants to see that happen.

Newt is a poster boy for the American Psychiatric Association's definitions of Anti-Social Personality Disorder, Psychopathic Personality and Malignant Narcissism. Come to think of it, so are most leading Republicans and more than a few Democrats.

I have the answer to that question. Republicans began opposing routine auto maintenance the same day they began opposing common sense. Do you have any other questions you need answeres to?
