U.S. May Have Taped Visits to DetaineesForeign Countries Sent Interrogators
By Josh White
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, August 5, 2008; Page A01
The Bush administration informed all foreign intelligence and law enforcement teams visiting their citizens held at Guantanamo Bay that video and sound from their interrogation sessions would be recorded, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post. The policy suggests that the United States could possess hundreds or thousands of hours of secret taped conversations between detainees and representatives from nearly three dozen countries.
Numerous State Department cables to foreign government delegations in 2002 and 2003 show that each country was subject to rules and regulations "to protect the interests and ensure the safety of all concerned." Condition No. 1 stated that U.S. authorities would closely monitor the interrogations, a practice that the Defense Department confirmed last week was also carried out to gather intelligence.
i have sent an email to the obama store asking when they're going to start selling tire pressure gauges. those idiots at the mccain campaign actually had a great idea! obama doesn't even have to design a new one -- mccain's campaign already has the supplier printing them up with "obama's energy plan."
i for one would be thrilled to have one -- except i want my money going to the candidate whose name is on it, not the candidate who seems to have confused an energy plan with sticking his head in the sand.
happy birthday, senator obama.
Most-absent member of the Senate, John McCain, says:
I think this story is a joke. It has to be a joke. Is it April 1st already?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARACK!! On to November 4th. Do what you can do.
don't underestimate the mccain campaign.
remember, his camp is fighting to keep the wool over joe sixpack's eyes, and thereby keep themselves out of jail.
just how viciously would YOU fight to keep your @$$ out of jail?
they're also really enjoying the party, and don't want it to end.
they're going to "fight for their right to party", because it beats going to jail.
so, what are YOU fighting for? is it worth it to you to work HARDER?

Maybe he's looking for some cheap oil down there?
So Dana Milbank will no longer appear on Countdown.
His smirk was a little annoying, and he and Keith were getting a tad too "chummy" on air.
There is enough of the show spent being 'cute', so less Dana is not necessarily a bad thing.
And kudo to the crew at Countdown on holding him responsible for what he writes. Or fails to write, as it were.
odanny @ 8:
I always knew that Dana had a biased opinion.
the mccain campaign's discovered humor, and it's working for them. it's their best tactic; humor wins elections.
when they make the obama / urkel connection, ya'll better be ready.
obama's not going to have 527's; he has to seem "above the fray."
but there's no reason you and i can't go out there and lampoon the $#!+ out of that old coot, not just on these threads, get on politico, huffpo, the chicago trib, your local paper. make a youtube video.

McCain Unhinged: The Must Issue for the Obama Campaign

Rednecks have no problem hanging Confederate flags on their highways. Afghan=based Marines are given the backdoor draft. The Pentagon renames its spying outfit while pretending it's been closed.
Obama can expect to have at least a quarter century more birthdays.
McCain will be lucky if he doesn't have a stroke, heart attack, etc. before 2009.

Q U E S T I O N:
How will Obama unlight his birthday candles...
... The same way he promises to unring the immunization bell he promised not to ring?
SERIOUSLY people, Americans should be in the streets! This man is about to inherit the role of president, a role he ensured to possess the ability to authorize the warrantless wiretaps of any American and there is nothing, N-O-T-H-I-N-G we can do to seek any Justice should our privacy is violated. He's insulated the president(not Bush, but ANY president, especially the next one, HIM) to be above the law!
~ Will he unring this bell through a signing statement of disobedience f the law ... like BUSH does?
~ Will he have a Congress capable of writing legislation to unring this bell he rang?
~ Will that Congress sabotage that legislation and force him to VETO said necessary legislation, proving to all Republicans that Obama isn't fighting for Constitutional Freedoms?
~ Will he VETO good legislation so as to preserve the bell he promised to not ring?
~ Will he wait for the Supreme Court of the U.S.A. to rule that the vote he cast as a Senator was an unconstitutional act against the Republic?
OR...
... Will Americans DEMAND that Bush be IMPEACHED for signing an EX POST FACTO bill into law so as to protect himself, personally?
.
thanks, Terrible @ 51, for the Olbermann link and I agree with you, C&L is fantastic.
Time for me to get some shut-eye now. Good night to all.

Are you stupid or something? Maybe you don’t read before you speak? You seem to have misconceptions about the FISA law just past, maybe3 this will clear it up for you.
Specifically, the Act:[3]
Prohibits the individual states from investigating, sanctioning of, or requiring disclosure by complicit telecoms or other persons.
Permits the government not to keep records of searches, and destroy existing records (it requires them to keep the records for a period of 10 years).
Protects telecommunications companies from lawsuits for "'past or future cooperation' with federal law enforcement authorities and will assist the intelligence community in determining the plans of terrorists."
Removes requirements for detailed descriptions of the nature of information or property targeted by the surveillance.
Increased the time allowed for warrantless surveillance to continue from 48 hours to 7 days.
Requires FISA court permission to wiretap Americans who are overseas.
Prohibits targeting a foreigner to eavesdrop on an American's calls or e-mails without court approval.
Allows the FISA court 30 days to review existing but expiring surveillance orders before renewing them.
Allows eavesdropping in emergencies without court approval, provided the government files required papers within a week.
Prohibits the government from invoking war powers or other authorities to supersede surveillance rules in the future
Tequila @ 54:
You know we're in trouble when Americans can't afford a double cheeseburger from McDonalds. Alright, in a way, maybe that's a good thing.
Now the people that ate more than a few too many of them can live off the fat they've accumulated for a while. Is that what is meant by "living off the fat of the land?"
#56, Frank Lee...
Prohibits the individual states from investigating, sanctioning of, or requiring disclosure by complicit telecoms or other persons.
Complicit is meant as following orders?
PROHIBITS investigation, sanctioning, or requiring disclosure... = "What evidence that we, Verizon, wiretapped you, we are immune from disclosure."
Permits the government not to keep records of searches, and destroy existing records (it requires them to keep the records for a period of 10 years).
Permit = allows... the Government to NOT KEEP records of searches... "What evidence on file, we don't keep those kinds of records. Go tell that to Verizon."
PERMITS the destruction of existing records...
Q: How can the be permitted to destroy records they're allowed to not keep?
Q: How can they retain(read keep) any records for 10 years if they are allowed to not keep any records in the first place?
Protects telecommunications companies from lawsuits for “‘past or future cooperation’ with federal law enforcement authorities and will assist the intelligence community in determining the plans of terrorists.”
THE BIG SCARY ONE HERE... protects for past crimes and ANY future crimes... THEN WHAT GOOD IS HAVING ANY LAWS IF PEOPLE CAN BE PROTECTED FROM THE CONSEQUENCES FOR VIOLATING SAID LAWS?
Got EX POST FACTO laws... Article II, Sec. 9, Par. 3. (READ IT!) The president is to ensure laws are constitutionally sound. Like the MCA of 2006, this too was passed by the Congress and signed into law by the president, only later to be declared an UNCONSTITUTIONAL act against American's inalienable Rights.
"...and will assist the intelligence community in determining the plans of terrorists."
So, is the Intel community in the business of determining terrorist plans, or the disruption of plans?
Removes requirements for detailed descriptions of the nature of information or property targeted by the surveillance
Fourth Amendment: ... but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. But then again, without a warrant who's to say what the target is, the information, the place, the person?
Increased the time allowed for warrantless surveillance to continue from 48 hours to 7 days.
The Patriot Act I and II already did this... yet Bush FAILED to adhere to FISA anyway!
... and Obama signed it, begrudgingly...
... Were Senators Dodd and Feingold wrong to insist on clean and good legislation?
.
Journalists are asking that we let go of the detained one.
Tequila @ 59:
having him captive maybe was a message to other journalists since they didn't have charges/cause
And finally Frank...
Is the president required to submit a warrant request from the FISA courts if said complicit warrantless surveillance turns up no information in the 7 days?
Prohibits the government from invoking war powers or other authorities to supersede surveillance rules in the future
So, isn't this legislation considered... "other authorities"? Wouldn't rewriting this legislation be construed to supercede current surveillance rules(read immunization)?
FISA is trivial.
They can do whatever they want, and you can't.
look mcBush should be way ahead of obama since he has all that great experience and not to forget his prior service of 40 yrs. ago....mcBush isn't ahead at best tied
i want to see an obama ad with mccain and bush hugging with bush approval numbers and maybe a gas pump
Got oversight?
NOT!
But McGramps has much experience in war. He knows how to win them. Just like Vietnam and, err, and, Afghanistan, and ahhh....Oh, well. The Manchurian Candidate has spoken.
Seeing early reports that Evan Bayh is Obama VP pick. Hope this isn't true, but VP is more about media hype than anything else.
58 Embittered & Anti-Republicrat - Max-Hussein-1
"SERIOUSLY people, Americans should be in the streets! This man is about to inherit the role of president, a role he ensured to possess the ability to authorize the warrantless wiretaps of any American and there is nothing, N-O-T-H-I-N-G we can do to seek any Justice should our privacy is violated. He’s insulated the president(not Bush, but ANY president, especially the next one, HIM) to be above the law!"
Now you seem to be a little smarter, so first thing is the president can't just wiretap any American he wants to without going through the courts, but
you are right; the whole thing should be declared an UNCONSTITUTIONAL !
The whole law is contradictory and will be tossed out as such and I think Obama knew that when he voted for it for obvious reasons. Do you really think Obama is so stupid as to come out and be a left leaning liberal and think he could win the presidency. Get real!
#62 Charles said:
They can do whatever they want, and you can’t.
... And so America was birthed...
I mean, really Charles, wasn't this explicitly why our Founders put the Fourth Amendment into writing? Heck, you've succinctly defined 20-21st Century American Tyranny... an antithetical concept I know, but then again, we all used to think 1984 was 'just' a book...
.
Charles @ 65:
charles your still at it......if mccain knows how to win wars and capture bin laden then share that with bush quit using it for politicization. mccain couldn't beat bush why is that.....bush was/is a weak candidate....his governor position was weak and he no foreign experience.i don't believe or trust polls but being close in a weird way it scares me about an attack on irans land by israel. there's a few months...sept/oct are going to be interesting time. time to hit the sack
#67 Frank,
so first thing is the president can’t just wiretap any American he wants to without going through the courts...
So why did you point out that the president doesn't have to go through the courts for SEVEN days...?
Either he goes through them, or he doesn't have to unless he turns up some dirt? It's one or the other... BOTH can not exist together.
and I think Obama knew that when he voted for it for obvious reasons. Do you really think Obama is so stupid as to come out and be a left leaning liberal and think he could win the presidency. Get real!
WHAT OBVIOUS REASONS... no balls to stand up against unconstitutional measures that weaken the Republic's civil protections? What... Obama's not strong on National Security IF he stands up for individual securities? Oh, only leftist leaning Liberals fight to support and defend the Constitution...? And I suppose the patriotic thing to do then is to undermine individual Rights, Freedoms and Liberties as outlined IN the Constitution...!?
moonsha @ 66:
i'm with you i guess clean..not complicated maybe have some strength in a redstate is why....actually these v.p.picks are a big deal mccain trying to hold out after obama....i think it will be romney....i like clinton, biden and webb
And lastly Frank,
Since you agree that this Law should be ruled UNCONSTITUTIONAL, how is voting for an unconstitutional measure that acts against the Republic, the right thing to do?
How is this "principled"?
Were Dodd and Feingold wrong to attempt to stand up against it if Obama was o.k. voting for it?
At least McTorture had the whits enough to be ABSENT that day, this way there is no record of what he supported when it counted(read VOTES).
.
Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act
The key word here is Foreign! It has to do with calls from outside the country to inside or visa versa it has nothing to do with domestic spying which needs a court order to do. You seem to think he can spy on anyone, anytime. I am not going to teach a class on comprehension or law to you or anyone else but most people I see posting are just spouting opinions with out knowing what the hell they are talking about, but then what else is new?
Frank,
Your lesson is lost on even yourself...
Then why the warrants at all...?
The law is already clear that warrants are NOT required for FOREIGN surveillance... silly!
Then why did you stress to me your points in THIS post?
Loyalty never looks so grand. Defend the indefensible... because Bush does no wrong... and Obama set himself up for the very same privilege.
Again, how will Obama unring the bell he promised NOT to ring?
That was my original question, and here you are making the specious argument, "That depends on what the meaning of "is" is." "The key word here is FOREIGN."
WRONG!
The key words here are UNCONSTITUTIONAL... WARRANTLESS... IMMUNITY!
Why would Telecoms need immunity from prosecution to spy legally on foreign sources... silly?
COMPREHEND?
Another U.S.-supported Iraqi leader gets killed.
Since McCain can’t fund and advertise at Senator Obama’s level Joe Jealous Scarborough decided he was going to help him out.
Let’s see if Morning Jealousy will give Senator Obama the free advertising it gave Senator McCain…
As quoted by a Political Republican Strategist it what would have cost Senator McCain 40 Million Dollars to run these add that he got for free on the NBC network, and he is a republican who looked disgusted at the media’s unfair behavior? Contrary to Joe Jealous Scarborough and Pat Buchannan’s behavior not all Republican behave like bigots. Mike Murphy, Ed Rollins, Mel Martinez and Chuck Hagel are among the stand outs who actually do want this country to go in better directions. And there is no internal struggle between being a Republican or American, they have all chosen to be Americans first. Let all hope that the Pat Buchanan’s and Joe Jealous Scarborough’s is a dying Breed.
God Help us all and let’s hope Karma hits people like Joe Jealous Scarborough in a way of declining rating.
As I and many others have stated before, Morning Jealousy will be on an Olympic Scheduling Break and this will be the time for CNN Morning Show to get its act together and steal the viewership away from the irresponsible conservative race bait driven show.
I was right the first time, you are stupid!
Lastly Frank,
DOMESTIC = American in nature(read land or person).
I mean, If my flight originates from LAX(domestic) and flies to Hong Kong(foreign), at which point does this flight become a foreign flight? And did I then become a foreigner in the process?
So, if the Govt. is listening in on calls originating or received on US soil, it then becomes DOMESTIC! Which REQUIRES a warrant request in no less than seven days.
However, since the telecoms are immune from providing any disclosure as to who, when, where or why, who's to say that the FISA court will have full disclosure of who has been wiretapped, or not?
And since the Govt is permitted to destroy any evidence of said searches, what evidence will remain to provide to a FISA court? Can you guarantee that there will be evidence remaining to supply to the FISA court should they request it? Who's gonna make the Telecoms comply to that order? They're immune!
.
Frank,
I'm just asking questions... none of which you've logically answered, if at all.
And in your frustration, you call me stupid.
.
They are only immune to civil suits not criminal ones. And with that I shall exit stage left!
Frank,
When you wrote: "first thing is the president can’t just wiretap any American he wants to without going through the courts..."
... You weren't addressing FISA, were you, since FOREIGN is the key word... YES?
What is a civil suit but a criminal charge by private(read person) individuals?
However, this Law does not preclude Telecoms from Federal law suits...
... but then again, the Federal Government designed this protection so as to force the Justice to be worked out from within... meaning the White House will not investigate itself.
"See, when the president does it, that means it is not illegal."
Frank,
Since the Telecoms are immune from disclosure, THAT is what protects them from civil suits... You could subpoena them to disclose, but if they were following the orders of the president, then they are complicit and ergo, IMMUNE from complying to the subpoena. Thus, making the order of the president paramount to the Rule of Law!
Go ahead, defend that position the Congress put the president in.
Go ahead, defend the Jr. Senator who's running to be the next decider, who voted to place ALL presidents, himself included, ABOVE the law.
Can you dictatorship?
Or don't you deserve to be SERVED by a president who Honors the Republic and it's Rule of Law(read Constitution).
.
Oops, McSpoke on the civil suit issue...
Civil suits require reasonable doubt. The Telecoms no longer are required to provide ANY evidence, thus erasing any evidence of malice and doubt is removed. After all, they were acting in compliance of the president...
"..It's like god was actually missing from the debate"
No one brings up the lucky charms leprechaun when they're discussing gay marriage either. That's because imaginary friends aren't part of the 'debate'. You can lie all you like and say "gob doesn't want you to marry because it's bad." or whatever pathetic argument you pull out of your ass but the fact remains that there is no gob and it's all about idiot humans who think it's their business who marries and who doesn't.
My advice to them is to mind their own fucking business. Much like abortions, if you don't like gay marriage, then don't have one.
I've been trying to get people to call me Freddy Knuckles.
Daily Reading pt 1...
Offshore Oil Drilling Will Still Not Lower Gasoline Prices: Barack Obama and Legislative Compromise - http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/08/obama-willing-to-compromise-offs...
Recapping Why Offshore Oil Won’t Reduce Energy Prices Short-Term: 1) There are 17.8 billion barrels of “undiscovered recoverable resources” (not actual oil, mind you, but potential oil) in areas currently off limits, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
2) The Energy Information Administration ays that once opened, leasing would not begin until 2012, production would not begin until 2017 and would not be of sufficient scale until 2030 to have any impact on the US oil or natural gas market. By this time offshore oil drilling would add approximately 250,000 barrels a day to the U.S. market, against an overall current demand of about 21 million barrels.
To use my father’s vernacular: The amount of oil contained in offshore areas which are current off limits means bubkiss when compared to overall U.S. oil demand.
Is This Sort of Compromise A Bad Thing? If Barack Obama were saying, as John McCain has, that offshore oil drilling will reduce energy prices in the short term, or that it is a real solution to U.S. energy independence, then I might feel more strongly about this. However, all he has done is say that he is willing to compromise.
Personally, I don’t think drilling offshore is worthwhile even as an interim step. The impact on U.S. energy independence and energy cost will be negligible, no matter if that oil comes online tomorrow or ten years from now. We need to be focussing all of our efforts on transforming the base structure of the US economy away from fossil fuels, not debating empty energy baby steps.
Obama Calls for Tapping of Oil Stockpiles - http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/washington/AP-Obama.html
Obama put forward a broad energy plan Monday designed to end U.S. reliance on imported oil within 10 years and shore up his standing amid a tightening White House race and high-anxiety over gas prices.
In response to the stupidity of the right wingnuts, Gingrich's horsecrap 527 (Drill now campaign), and all the other GOP talking points garbage.....a real energy plan from a real presidential candidate.
Obama 08 Drilling solves nothing: The world's fleet of Deep sea drilling rigs is booked until 2013, it costs $500 Million to make a new one, costs $500,000 a day to operate one, Bush's own energy dept: Savings on a gallon of gas won't be realized until 2030!!!!! And even then it will only be a few cents....THINK, THINK, THINK, THINK!
Not shocked: Multiple Oil Company Executives Gave Huge Contributions To Electing McCain Just Days After Offshore Drilling Flip-Flop/'Reversal' - http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/08/oil_company_exec...
Drilling solves nothing....FOLLOW THE MONEY & THINK....McBush & Big Oil....we already have two oilmen in the White House now....we don't need another one, unless $10 a gallon is something you look forward to spending in 3 years.....
The Illegitimate Republican Regime is Supposed to be Protecting Us, But Even the New York Times -- Forever Status Quo in Its News Reporting -- Prints an August 5th Story Discussing the Multi-Year Bungled Bush Administration Investigation of the Domestic Terrorist Attack with Anthrax from an American Military Bio-Weapons Lab. McBush's campaign security kicks only black reporter out of media area - http://floridacapitalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080802/CAPITO...
Umm...about playing that uh....race card??? Republicans = Hypocrisy's bitch... Unbelievable, any African American that votes for McSame is a self-hater, period.
Time to leave the Con-servative anti-humanity agenda back in the 20th century....Throughout the annals of US History, from the Revolution (Con-servatives = Tories/Loyalists to King), to Slavery (Confederacy), to non-intervention in WWII (Republican Elitism at its height), to Civil Rights (GOP fought it at every turn), to today's destruction of the middle class via Reaganomics/'Supply side'/Bushonomics/'Free Market' fantasyland BS...when have con-servatives ever been right about anything?
The beginning of the end of democracy: Wall Street To Privatize U.S. Infrastructure - http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=9736
Cash-strapped U.S. state and city governments are likely to sell or lease more highways, bridges, airports and other assets to investors desperate for stable returns after being frazzled by the credit crisis. The trend is set to pick up speed given worsening budget deficits in state capitals and city halls nationwide. It will also be welcomed by Wall Street bankers hoping to help create and market so-called "infrastructure" transactions at a time many debt markets remain paralyzed, and after major U.S. stock indexes fell into bear market territory.
"When you are nervous about everything else, you put your money in a toll road," said John Schmidt, a partner at the law firm Mayer Brown LLP in Chicago. "That's the logic of infrastructure. Returns are stable and predictable. You won't get fabulously rich, but you'll get stable cash flow."
Meanwhile the American Society of Civil Engineers estimates $1.6 trillion is needed over five years to raise the often aged U.S. infrastructure to "good" condition.
We can stop this 2nd Gilded age, before its too late....but not by voting for John "Free Market" McBush...the robber barrons of Wall Street can be stopped before they sell this country out from under you...
Ever heard of a 'cost benefit analysis'....do you really want a private foreign multinational corporation beholden only to the allmighty profit to decide which bridge, road, etc needs repairing???? Economic Chaos = desperation, = further privatization and loss of democracy...
Ivins is the THIRD Scientist the FBI has Tried to Pin the Anthrax Attacks On - http://www.opednews.com/articles/Ivins-is-the-THIRD-Scienti-by-George-Wa...
First the Egyptian scientist, Dr. Ayaad Assaad, was framed. When that frame-up fell apart, they tried to frame Stephen Hatfill. Now, a couple of weeks after the frame-up against Hatfill unravelled, they are claiming that Ivins is the guy. Note: There appears to be more than one patsy. Patsy anyone???
The REAL 1960s Terrorists Were Named Westmoreland, Johnson and Nixon: by Harvey Wasserman - http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/08/04/10789/
Hate-mongering against alleged “leftist 1960s terrorists” now fills the days of anti-Obama rage for the Rovian bloviator battalion. Bill Ayers and the Weathermen, the Black Panthers, the American Indian Movement, Baby Boom professors, social workers , etc, are front and center for the hateful blatherings of the usual GOP flunkies all cowering at the prospect of an African-American president. But there were, indeed, three 1960s terrorists whose murderous, planet-killing rampage continues to poison this nation. They tower above all others. Their names: William Westmoreland, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon.
This unholy trinity killed outright more than 55,000 Americans and several million southeast Asians—most of them innocent civilians—while bombing, strafing and spewing horrific toxic chemicals onto countless of square miles of previously pristine jungle. Their Agent Orange caused tens of thousands of deaths and deformities that still carry through the generations. No single terror act in the history of the United States even remotely compares to the lethal psychosis that created and was then furthered by the Vietnam War.
Obama leads McCain among low-wage workers: poll - http://www.reuters.com/article/politicsNews/idUSN0339387820080804
Democrat Barack Obama holds a two-to-one lead over Republican John McCain among low-wage workers but many are uncommitted to either presidential candidate, to according to a new poll by The Washington Post, the Kaiser Family Foundation and Harvard University. Obama's advantage is due largely to overwhelming support from African Americans and Hispanics, but even among white voters, the Illinois senator leads McCain 47 percent to 37 percent, The Washington Post reported in Monday editions.
Of course...the GOP is the Party of monopolies, CEOs making 400X more than the lowest paid worker, and tax cuts for the ultra rich who use society's commons infinitely more often and don't pay for that use...they get the 'free lunch'...you the 99% of taxpayers subsidize their taxes...taxes are the dues for living in a civil soceity, they go all the way back to ancient Egypt...

"The popular image of the campaign -- McCain bantering with national journalists in the back of his bus -- has, in reality, all but vanished. The traveling press is now routinely stiffed in favor of five-minute sit-downs with local reporters. ... National correspondents traveling with the candidate did not get to ask McCain a question for four days, and grew angry when a media availability was scheduled for late afternoon Friday in Panama City, Fla. -- too late to do them much good and requiring extra flights for those who had planned to head home for the weekend."

Latest Zogby National Poll: Obama and McCain Statistically Tied. Message to Obama: Define Your Opposition or be Defined by them.

“The McCain camp seems to have turned lemons into lemonade. Huge crowds and mostly favorable press reviews of Obama’s overseas trip have been trumped by McCain’s attacks on Obama. Loss of support for Obama among young voters may also be due to his perceived reversals on issues they care about, such as the war and government eavesdropping.”
