Oh, you think we're making that up?  CNN, my friends:

McCain felt so comfortable at the [Sturgis Motorcycle Rally] event that he even volunteered his wife for the rally’s traditional beauty pageant, an infamously debauched event that’s been known to feature topless women.

“I encouraged Cindy to compete,” McCain said to cheers. “I told her with a little luck she could be the only woman ever to serve as first lady and Miss Buffalo Chip.”

But hey, "Chip" is a whole lot nicer than that other C-word he called her in 1992.   We wish her a little luck, too, on the "Miss Buffalo Chip" part.

Classy, really classy. Not to long ago, he also claimed to stop beating his wife. Great candidate Repugs.

"known to feature topless women." i.e. it's a contest which is top optional which is different from topless.

FTR for those who don't know McCains suger momma use to enter beauty contests.

unbelievable.
( shaking my head)

big deal, lets act like republicans here.

He was playing to the crowd. He and his campaign knew EXACTLY what he was saying. A vote is a vote. If they can steal them with their funny machines, then demeaning your wife, even if it was tongue-in-cheek, for a vote is no worse.

John McCain... forever the misogynist.

This man is a pig -- or maybe it's just his age. Either excuse, just doesn't cut it. Why, in God's name, does this woman stay with him? The money is hers. She has her own interests and work. He's in DC, she stays in Arizona. From everything I've read about her she doesn't like politics. What's the attraction? After this particular debacle, she may ask that question herself. Let's hope so. I'd love to see McCain try to actually EARN his way for the first time in his life.

Big whoop. He was appealing to the crowd, regardless of how tasteless it was.

Back to the real issues, please.

Real biker women don't talk about doing it--they just flash 'em. Poser.

"Get off my lawn!"

I want to see him hurl a couple of pitchers of beer over his scantily clad wife; then I'll take him at his word!

Bbbllleecchhh.......!!!!

Oh, sorry.....

Great speech Mr. McCain, now please step back into your protective bubble until your handlers call on you.

Is Cindy McCain a woman with no self-esteem?

He took a page from Obama's playbook to speak in front of a free concert.

He opened for Kid Rock.

Too funny.

"Despite Media Narrative, Obama Leads By Over 100 Electoral Votes According To Independent Groups"

Today McCain demanded that Congress return from their vacation and sign up for offshore drilling. Isn't is sort of hypocritical of him to say they aren't doing their jobs, when he hasn't cast a vote at his job since April?

BTW is this McCains new strategy? Go to places that already have big crowds instead of big crowds going to see him?

Someone should ask all those evangelical 'leaders' backing McCain what they think of this side of him. Otherwise we are going to end up with an evangelical-biker coalition.

Methed out, drunk, getting naked and revving Harleys.

I'd rather see VicoCindy than gramp's droopy man-breasts. I bet he would if he could to squeeze in some more pander-votes.

And she will forever be known as Cindy 'the train' McCain.

If Obama had been THERE and said THAT... Hannity and Rush would do whole programs tomorrow on the radio about WHAT A SKANK MICHELLE IS.

By the way... at Buffalo Chip they have two different categories for the girls to enter in their "beauty contest:"

Would Cindy McCain qualify with "LITTLE SPORTIES..." OR "... BIG TWINS?"
Every night the crowd gets to see 'em... then the crowd gets to vote.

And then we havethe infamous "c*nt" comment.

Seems McCain doesn't know what constitutes appropriate behavior towards women. (What do you expect from a guy born BEFORE Womens' Sufferage?)

Well, he called her a trollop who plasters on the makeup. This seems fitting enough.

I would really say, he's just joking around, she doesn't mind, let people just joke around now and then...

EXCEPT...

If Obama said this, it would be national news for 3 days. Hurricanes could pound our shores. Bubonic plague could break out in 5 major cities. That Fox News crawl would still be talking about Obama, the bikers and his "women problem". The phrase "Obama Chip" would become a national word. Republicans would be wearing brown cow pies on their heads at their national convention.

THAT is why this is egregious.

P.S. "egregious" is an elitist word once used when intelligence and education were respected in this country. Now that down home ignorant cronies are most respected, you Republicans will have to look it up to see what it means.

Should that have been ignored because it was just a joke or is it only misogynist jokes that we should be ignoring here.

Please, let me know.

You folks want to know where liberals and feminists get a reputation for lacking a sense of humor this is a pretty good place to start.

I know I found his "gorilla rape" joke and his " poison the Iranians" joke to be just the type of rib tickling humor that would appeal to the Republican soul. John McCain's Operation Whiskey Tango
POSTED BY: CubbyChaser

In an obvious attempt to distinguish himself from Barack Obama -- whom he has previously likened to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears in celebrity and vapidity -- John McCain has chosen to take the social high road by sharing the bill at a Sturgis, South Dakota event with a bunch of strippers, drunken bikers and (most prestigiously of all!) "popular" "musician" Kid Rock...

He was trying to be funny; ie, it was 'an attempt at humor.' But, still, if you wanna call it a freudian slip, fine. What you're saying is that such a slip can shed light on a person's latent racism but 'attempts at humor' have no ability to shed light on a person's latent, or not so latent, sexism?

Attempts at humor can shed light on a lot things, be it racism or sexism. I'm saying that you have no way to be sure what the light is actually pointing at.
I often make crude jokes around my friends, in an attempt to fight prejudice by confronting them, not in order to prolong and support them. The right conclusion may very well be the opposite of what you're trying to make, or you may be right. I'm merely claiming that we have much better arguments against McCain than bad jokes.

If a bunch of anonymous reporters are claiming they were eyewitnesses and heard McCain call his wife the C-word, how come none of them have the balls to step forward, identify themselves, show some journalistic integrity and publicly stand by the story?

As I mentioned in our last discussion about mcgrampa's gorilla rape joke, I and my friends frequently engage in ethnic humor to defuse the power of slurs. However, I seriously doubt mcmacaca was trying to stike a blow against sexism -- this time or any of the numerous other times he made degrading jokes about women.

You note that jokes can indeed shed light on sexism. Is sexism such a non issue in your book that mcgrampa's apparent sexism demonstrated by his numerous sexist jokes is not important? I'm not saying it's the only reason to vote against the maniac, but is certainly a good one and, hence, discussion of it is relevant.

Just to be clear, George Allen's racism, as demonstrated by his macaca moment attempt at humor, was enough for a majority of the people of VA to vote against him for the senate and it's also the reason he's not on the gop slate and they're stuck with mcgrumpy.

Similarly, mcgrampa's sexism, as demonstrated by his repeated sexist attempts at humor, should be enough on it's own to disqualify him for dogcatcher let alone any higher office. That does not mean there aren't a ton of other reasons not to vote for him. This is just one of a nearly endless array of arguments against him, but it is a good one. That doesn't diminish the merit of the other reasons to vote against him -- it adds to them. It's additive not zero sum.

Quite possibly. If she still has one iota of self-esteem, it'll be gone by November. Add me to the growing number of people who wonder why she stays with this old fool.

Over at Kos their take:

by BarbinMD
Tue Aug 05, 2008 at 10:50:26 AM PDT

Consider this yearly event at the Sturgis motorcycle rally:

Buffalo Chip has a reputation for that sort of thing. It holds a Miss Buffalo Chip contest every night, which is essentially a topless beauty pageant. And occasionally bottomless, too. During a drenching rain Wednesday night, the contest broke up into smaller groups and one woman wound up dancing naked on a bar top. Her boyfriend/husband saw her and angrily dragged her away as she struggled to put her pants back on and muttered something about how, "It's only this one week a year."

At this point you're probably asking yourself, what does this have to do with politics? Here's John McCain, speaking yesterday at the Sturgis motorcycle rally:

I was looking at the Sturgis schedule and noticed that you have a beauty pageant and so I encouraged Cindy to compete. I told her, with a little luck, she could be the only woman ever to serve as both the First Lady and Miss Buffalo Chip.

It seems that John McCain really is willing to say or do anything to win.

Mike Mid City @ 18:

Is Cindy McCain a woman with no self-esteem?

She and her husband are just people who will do anything to win.

He's playing to the biker crowd and it will work. Like the majority of the people at Sturgis are going to vote for an "Uppity Negro" anyway. i hope that when November rolls around Obama just kicks the shit out of McGramps. I get so disgusted going to work every day and hearing all of these right wing smears, whispers, and bullshit emails get regurgitated and for Obama to win in spite of all of their best efforts I think would be great. It's sickening to me how the right wing brings the level of political discourse in this country down year after year to even lower levels. Presidential politics, or any other kind, has no place for the likes of Brittney and Paris, especially when this country is facing some very very perilous times. The fact that they are brought in to election makes me sad for what this country has become.

unfortunately, it's always been like this going back even to Athens. hat's why noting mccombover's sexism is relevant and important. not least because some gop operative are trying, though not very well, to convince former clinton supporters to vote for the maniac by trying to smear obama as somehow sexist.
