Mike's Blog Roundup
Our Future: Seventeen months ago, Rick Perlstein wrote an essay predicting exactly how the 2008 campaign would go down. Turns out the only thing he didn't predict was the Paris Hilton reference.
Tomgram: Thomas Frank on Washington's Lords of Creation
collateral: The next crisis to hit our sinking ship of state may be a pension fund debacle that, had we stuck to a sensible tax policy, could have been avoided.
Mock, Paper, Scissors: The MPS Guide to GOP vice presidential candidates. In a handy print-out and keep format for further reference, it brings you the Pro, the Con, and the Baggage for each of the whispered candidates!

OFF THE BEATEN PATH: Morning Martini, Conservative Truths, Montreal Simon, WTF Is It Now?!?

In my city people are already making signs saying:
GOP - "It's like they take pride in being ignorant."
It looks like Boy George is set to make a speech on China and human rights today. You go, W!! Tell the Chinese about how horribly they treat their people and violate all principles of free speech and thought. Those Chi-Coms sure are evil. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to Wal-Mart to buy some cheap shit made in China.

Corrected:
Tell the Chinese about how horribly they treat their people and violate all principles of free speech and thought....then get on your knees and freely kiss their arses while ask for more money to finance your asinine war.
Doing a little happy dance here. Thank you Mike for linking Morning Martini. You made my day.
Regarding WTF is it Now? Yesterday, I heard the story about finding the "motherlode" of gorillas" on NPR. What was interesting, and I'm sure I'm showing my ignorance about gorillas here, is that much of the gorilla population has been destroyed by the Ebola virus. I had no idea. So, it isn't just the hunting gorillas that puts them at risk, but this horrible virus.
whining american @ 2:
China will probably say back to him, When you clean up your own house, we'll talk.
whining american @ 2:
Maybe he'll allude to Hamdan (if he can pronounce it) by way of demonstrating our commitment to human rights.
McShame's VP: Condi Rice.
as a black woman, she'd trump both BHO AND HRC...plus she'a alreday been 'vetted' for corruption, and been found 'ready' by the BUSHIES...
Rick Perlstein......right on the money.
Thanks Mike. Now to finish the article about "FNB" politics.
I pray to God Obama isn't about to name Bayh as his VP.
Obama should run an ad listing the contributions the Hilton family has made to the McCain campaign along with how Paris was misused in McCain's campaign ad. Then he should immediate follow with the caption: "To McCain anyone and everyone is expendable, even his most loyal supporters."
I'm still reeling over McCain saying his wife should enter the contest to be Miss Buffalo Chip. What the hell was he thinking? A man who loves and respects his wife doesn't say something like that. I know there have been stories about what he has called her in the past but apparently he hasn't changed since then. I hope when they were off the stage and in private that she read him the fu*king riot act. If she didn't, I have no respect for her or for him. What a wretched old man!
Mugsy @ 11:
I'm right there with you. Bayh was on a couple of the morning cable news shows this morning and he just didn't cut it for me. He appeared weak to me. If he gets picked there must be more to him than I have seen so far.
McCain puts tire gauge in mouth
Republican John McCain appeared to back down on Tuesday in his dispute with his opponent Barack Obama over tire pressure.
[...]
The surprise came during a telephone town hall meeting McCain held on Tuesday with voters in Pennsylvania.
"Obama said a couple of days ago says we all should inflate our tires. I don't disagree with that. The American Automobile Association strongly recommends it," McCain said.
But he kept up his broad criticism of Obama on energy: "I ... don't think that that (inflating tires) is a way to become energy independent."
And Obama turns it back on him:
"While we’re on the subject of Senator McCain contradicting himself," [Obama] said, and outlined his own suggestion, mocked by the GOP, that Americans keep their tires inflated, and McCain's concession that it's reasonable.
"In the coming days it’s going to be interesting to watch this debate between John McCain and John McCain," he said.
Has Obama chosen a campaign theme song yet?
How about this one:

I think Hillary slipped when she chose Celine Dion.
Mock Paper Scissors is great :D A very handy chart for future reference. LOL!!

McCain Staffers Accused of Racial Profiling
On the campaign trail, Senator John McCain’s staffers are being accused of racial profiling after ordering an African American reporter to leave the media area outside McCain’s bus. Stephen Price of the Tallahassee Democrat was removed during a McCain stop in Florida. A McCain spokesperson says Price was told to leave because the area was reserved for national reporters. But Price says several journalists from other local papers were allowed to remain.
"With Election Day still three months away, 48 percent said they're hearing too much about the Democratic candidate, according to a poll released Wednesday by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center. Just 26 percent said the same about his Republican rival, John McCain."
Would people please make up their mind! First it's "We don't know enough about him, he's an unknown", now it's "Shut up about him already!"
Can't we just offer Diebold more money than whatever the Republicans pay them to fix elections? It'd be cheaper than actually running this year's series of "American Idol: Presidential Edition".
Here's a campaign theme song for mccain

Texas executes Mexican killer amid international protests
Regardless of how you feel about the death penalty, this is an interesting case. The issues revolve around, the death penalty, of course, but also immigration, the international court, American's rights abroad, international treaties, state's rights, the president's authority to interfere in state issues.
The crime was quite brutal: two teenage girls happen to meet up with 5 gang members after a gang initiation and are brutally raped and murdered, strangled with shoe laces. The accused does not communicate that he is a Mexican National until well after the appeals process.
I first heard about this yesterday, before the execution and felt compelled to follow up on it.

Being ignorant is simply not knowing. Being proud of ignorance is stupidity.
When McCain poses his rhetorical question about Senator Obama‘s readiness to lead by saying, “Is he ready to lead?”, the answer is obvious. Senator Obama has already been leading for several months. Both McCain and Bush are following Obama’s foreign policy recommendations on Afghanistan and Iraq. So if McCain and Bush are already following the leader, then, obviously, Obama is the leader. Q.E.D.

Case and point... Bob Schaffer's son is ignorant and apples don't fall far from the tree.

The dingleberry doesn't fall far from the turd.
I actually found the Mock Paper Scissors chart to be pretty offensive. I'm a staunch liberal and read Crooks And Liars every day. And if something like that was posted by a Republican, it would be up on this site and we'd attack it for "lowering the quality of political discourse." Romney's con is "Strapped dog to the roof of the car for a family vacation"? How about some of his terrible policy suggestions? Other than being young (Obama is young) and loved by big business, all it says about Cantor is that he's Jewish. As if that's supposed to be a bad thing. I'm all for humor and trashing the Republicans, but making cheap, talking-point-style jokes? Come on. We're better than that.
(Although Jindal's exorcism deserved to be up there. I mean, he performed an exorcism!!)
Perlstein's always sharp, but that one's a keeper.
