C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Herbie Hancock

Rick Perstein enjoys the LNMC so I asked him to make a selection for the club. He's a jazz fan himself and sent this tune over immediately. Thanks Rick, I love your work. Your book, Nixonland is a truly remarkable accomplishment.

Go Herrbie go! Chameleon is one of his songs that I have put into my play book whenever I get a chance to perform live.

I first heard Chameleon at summer camp in the mid 1970s. The counselors played it every morning full blast to wake us up. Headhunters was the first album I ever bought. I wore out 2 LPs, and one or two cassettes... Haven't burned out the CD yet, but you never know.

Excellent selection, thanks for sharing

Thanks for the Herbie clip- funkiest band I've ever seen. It was disturbing, though, to have the clip cut off right as Herbie was beginning his solo...

So what exactly do you mean, exactly, by "good stuff"?

Buck & The Buckaroos

Foolin' Around

Actually I found the other half of this performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hmVHhH96es

You know, those little jewels a person is unaware of or hasn't heard in a long time.

Although I appreciate the Don clip, I'm more interested in where I can get one of those kick ass suits nowadays than the music.

Yeah, those suits kill.

Destroy All Monsters

You're Gonna Die

Wow, so many fine songs to listen to. Herbie Hancock is a genius.

Andy, thanks for the wide selection of music you have provided tonight. ps, I especially liked the Matthew Sweet tune @ 18.

Campy, you are correct, Oscar Peterson was the master of the ivories. You have great taste !

Loved Watermellon Man. Mom and I used to eat gumbo and put on Herbie.

Going Out Of My Head

Okay, so are you familiar with Fela? He made some of the most funky, soulful, angry, militant music ever. He lived by the credo "Music is a weapon". The Nigerian Army, in response to his song Zombie attacked his compound and beat him, nearly to death, and threw his mother out of a window, killing her. Fela's response was to deliver her coffin to the main Army barracks in Lagos. Fela died of AIDS in '97.

[Note on this vid: It's a little glitchy, but just a little. And like most of Fela's work, this one's a bit lengthy, so the person who posted it cut off a significant part of the instrumental intro. But this song still kicks it- BIGTIME]

Fela Kuti

Suffering & Smiling

Greg @ 28, Steely Dan has always been a favourite of mine. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker - wow. I love them.

this more than makes up for the Jason Mraz post.

I've been examining Herbie's work from this period a lot lately. If you click my link, you can hear some of the result...

Herbie took funk and jazz to the next level. He's constantly probing the next level of jazz be it acoustic or electric.I hope to see him play this coming week. The drummer in the video Mike Clark is going to be playing drums with our group Global Noize for our upcoming tour.he's a bad cat
I love the Videos on C&L-a good break from all of the other BS
Peace, jason

Stupendous. I saw the Headhunters in Portland OR, at the Paramount in,... I'd have to look at the ticket stub I saved. Exquisite.

His left hand is the funkest

GO YANKEES!

Thanks for the comment calgarylady. I've actually been to Calgary back in 1986, nice place.

That was definitely new. Thanks. I read up on Fela and I'm at a loss for words.

grs@38

You're welcome.

BTW, I've linked Fela at least 20 times over the run of the LNMC, so it's not that new. ;^D

Effin' pinstripe*muttermutter*.

The original name of the song was indeed "Watermelon Man" but it was changed to "Chameleon" not long after they realized that the original title was too... Stepin Fetchit.

I am 'way impressed that Herbie put his right hand on top of that killer bass lines, one of my all-time favorites as a bassist. Played this song with my college jazz band in the late '80's, and still love it.

Watermelon Man.
