"Maverick No More"
By SilentPatriot Thursday Aug 07, 2008 1:00pm
After the McCain campaign put out this ad showing various Democratic politicians praising the senior Senator for his mavricky maverickness, the Dems' Rapid Response Team put out this ad, in which the same politicians talk about how 2000 McCain is nothing like McCain 2.0(08):
"The John McCain of 2000 wouldn't vote for this John McCain."

I wonder if the Dems might not run ads from 2000 that Bush ran against McPapen? I mean, McPapen's gonna use Hillary against Obama, I damn near guarantee it, so why not hit back with Bush against the current GOP candidate?
I may be first due to some tech problems with the Harry Shearer thread
Well I`m number 2.Mc Cain`s number 2,too.
Nicely done. McCain's ad had hardly gotten going and smack! Good comeback!
I doubt the Dems will touch the Bush crap. Leave to the Angry Left to pick up the dirty work. Hooray for MoveOn.org. I may not agree with everything they say, but at least they have the sack to man up and take it to the Republicants.
They already used something Hillary said in the ad that this one is smacking back. It was when she said McCain brought a lifetime of experience and Obama brought a speech from 2004
McCain = Bush
Sorry. Watching our Democratic folks bash McCain is about as meaningful as watching Republicans bash Barak. They should have had *Republicans* praising McCain for being loyal to Bush, including McCain's quote about how "I voted with Bush 95% of the time". This ad is the choir preaching to the choir.
Too bad HRC's negative campaign gave the GOP so much ammunition.
Her quote in McCain's ad is the worst, and probably the only one not taken out of context!
Good swift response.
YourMom @ 9:
I knew that was going to happen...which is why ads pulled of guys like Bush and Limbaugh criticizing McPapen would be fair play for this turnabout.
"The John McCain of 2000 wouldn't vote for this John McCain" Haha.
How george and dick destroyed America
So here we are, exactly in the place many of us thought we might get to. we are still engaged in a War of Choice against a country that was not a threat to us. We've Spent almost a Trillion US Dollars on that shit-hole of a war. We're just about bankrupt and borrowing heavily from the Chinese. We didn't do anything about Darfur (no oil there).
Now we have Georgia ( a heavily Western leaning Nation who favors the US being attacked and we really are impotent at this point in time.
This is the "bush legacy" (lower case intended), he has done with the USA what he did with all of his companies and his baseball team, ran them into ruin.
But even in the face of all this ruin Americans still seem to have a huge "Moron Factor" in that they seem to be leaning toward McCain who beats the same old drum that bush and cheney have over the last 7.6 years.
If America elects McCain, then they will deserve what they get, they will be on the road that bush has already started toward being a second rate world power. A kind of derelict with her own infrastructure crumbling. We used to be the leader of the free world in Science and Technology, now we are sliding backward on that also.
So ... Sorry Georgian people, all we can do is send someone over to pay lip service at this time.
Thanks george and dick, may you both die slow painful deaths.
Now I'm off to bed.
Bangkok Bob in Chiang Mai
Dems are going to have to work a lot harder against the bullshit. If they don't they will lose....Repubs are coming with everything they have against Obama. Dems need to unpack some political weapons and show them..... Saw this www.phoenixnewtimes.com/mccain with a history of McCain in Arizona and more.... makes for some illuminating reading...
♥♦♣♠☻..Bangkok Bob..☻♥♦♣♠ @ 12:
Sleep well, Bob
Just watch McSame give speeches. He's snarky, condencending, and arrogant. I cringe when I think he could win.
A wee clip of Charles Keating being sentenced might be appropriate and would certainly help people to find McCaint's roots.
Nice response ad....but too bad it didn't show Bush and McSame hugging each other.
Nothingmuch @8: Did you watch the ad this one was responding to? I agree, they should run spots like the one you describe, but at least one they've run features McCain bragging about how much he's stood by Bush, and many of them are hitting the "Same Old Politics" theme. This spot specifically takes all the Dems (save Obama) who praised McCain in McCain's ad and shows them criticizing him.
Obama's rapid reponse team should keep these coming. It's a good rebuttal ad, but I hope they continue to hammer home how much McCain is in lockstep with Bush.
And wow, those Hillary Clinton remarks were poor form, as many liberals remarked back when she made them. They didn't even use all the ammo she gave them...
Pat Buchannan (sp?) said this morning if you go state by state and look at the state polls, McCain is much farther behind than the national polls show. I think that is probably correct.
If it isn't correct now, just wait until after the first debate.
General_Rennenkampf @ 11:
Bush praising McCain is much more damning. The man is so toxic even McCain tries to tie him to Obama
P.D. @ 15:
you forgot petty...meanspirited...and curmudgeonly...
but yeah...same here...he's the absolute LAST person this country needs.
I want them to save that picture of bush being hugged by McCain until we get closer to the election and everyone is paying more attention. A lot of people haven't seen that one yet and it needs a very special time and introduction.
we all know what this is......it's a substitution for the i.d. republican....and a clever linguistic separation from bush.
mccains' maverick day's vanished after 2000. that was his weakness then and his perceived strength now.
mccain is a continuation of Republican policy and NEOCON
ambitions.....we better stay on this. mccain has a lot of
power and money behind him.
galmud @ 20:
True...
Actually, nothing else to add to that.
General_Rennenkampf @ 24:
Except a heartfelt HA! In your face McBain!
Pfft...
Why didn't they leave the final word to John McCain, and include that clip where he says he voted with The Shrub 90% of the time?
General_Rennenkampf @ 1:
Hopefully they'll use both, as well as all of the Rush Limbaugh rants about why 'real' conservatives would rather vote for Hilary Clinton than John McCain. If nothing else, it will make the right wing look like the gang of shrill schizophrenic hypocrites that they are.
I'm really worried about the language in the ads. "We can't afford..." and "The wrong choice..." are such weak motivators. They're almost written to be ignored. If you really want something and someone tells you you can't afford it, for most people, the warning is completely written off. Can't they use more direct language? This is a great ad, but to end it with "We can't afford another four years..." -- oh yeah? It puts it entirely in the realm of personal opinion, when the devastation waiting for us under McCain's proposals is real and should be declared in terms of facts.
Pericles @ 27:
Yes, hopefully. Unfortunately, the wet noodles in the DNC don't quite seem to get why that idea is crucially needed to be put into practice, particularly if more ads like McCain's are released. For every ad with Hillary criticizing Obama, release one of Limbaugh or Savage criticizing McPapen. An eye for an eye, as it were.
OT: How big of a tool is Jake Tapper RE: Exxon-Mobil Obama?
Comparing employee contributions to the 3X's Corporate contributions to McLame is a false dichotomy.
All this rhetoric and money being spent to convince US voters that one candidate will be more of the same while another will be completely different only appeals to the very naive.
The institutions and multitudes of players and controllers behind the scenes will assure that anyone set up as the next puppet for the public to think is their 'leader' will continue the long standing policies of the US. That is, to support your corporate interests with a publicly funded military and spin it through the corporate controlled media as if it were in your best interests.
Nothing short of a revolution will change this.
An election certainly won't!
Batocchio @ 18:
No, I hadn't watched the ad this one was responding to. It is more effective in that context. Thanks for pointing it out.
There is an excellent post at Kos written about a reporter who has followed McCain all his political life. McCain has a nasty background. He has used people mercilessly. His hot temper is nothing new and basically he represents everything one would expect from a man who is dedicated to nothing but getting what he wants. He can play the part of the chummy friend and then stab you in the back if the occasion calls for it.
In my opinion he tries to hide who he really is behind his "hero" status. He doesn't want anyone peeking into who he has been since his return from Vietnam because that isn't a pretty picture.
i would like to see an ad with bush and mccain hugging of course with real time/latest bush approval numbers.
use words like gas prices, inflation tax breaks for the wealthy, home foreclosure....are you better than you were four years ago
McCain's ad was way better. Shorter individual sound bites that appear off the cuff are quick and easy for voters to digest, and the endorsement from Hillary Clinton, which we all knew was coming back to haunt is, is especially huge since the whole "he's not experienced enough" is the #1 excuse "passive" racists use for not supporting the black guy.
The response was weak - Using McCain's own words is great, it should be done over and over, but the long, droning statements from Kerry and Biden almost put me to sleep. To the outside observer, showing Democrats Flip-Flopping on John McCain in an election year in a dull, prepared monotone isn't exactly a convincing rebuttal.
Clips of McCain saying "I support the President's decision" or "I supported the President 95% of the time" mixed with Conservatives like Cochran and Buchanan talking about how scary the thought of McCain in the White House is would have been far more effective. McCain is fucking terrifying - he's not just "Bush #3", he's much, much, much worse.
General_Rennenkampf @ 1:
well, for one thing, it would help establish McSame's claim that he's NOT-McSame...
♥♦♣♠☻..Bangkok Bob..☻♥♦♣♠ @ 12:
Don't you mean how Batman and Batgirl destroyed America? Get with the program already.
I considered John McCain in 2000 if he would have won the nomination. The biggest reason was Lieberman. When Bush won, I became firmly behind Gore but still thought that Lieberman was a bad choice for VP.
Commentator @ 35:
pretty much agree with you.....now it's time to do a hillary ad hitting mccain........personally i wish she wouldn't have hit obama that hard maybe below the belt....that's why they got romney out the race so he wouldn't hit mcBush too hard.
MSNBC is saying Edwards has admitted to having an affair.
Ron @ 38:
It was the old Clinton/McAuliffe "Must Win Florida" strategy. The idea clearly was that since they had to win Florida, they thought putting a Jewish man on the ticket would seal the deal.
Identity politics is a loser, it never works, but the DLC types swear by it - it's "Conventional Wisdom" in Washington, it has to be right.
McCain's been a bad, unhinged, vile person his whole life - he was just better at hiding it in 2000.
This does not come across as real effective to me either, why use a bunch of democrats who are already on board? Use McCain's own words and the words of fellow Republicians, like the segment with McChimp at the end.
pissed off patricia @ 19:
Whoa... stop the presses... did you just agree with Pat?... I think I read about this in Revelations...
Commentator @ 35:
This post is worth repeating because it's exactly right. Until the DNC learns about strategy, we're in a lot of trouble.
Now that Edwards admits his affair, I have to wonder what Obama is hiding thinking he can get away with it like Edwards.
Edward's had an affair? Ehh - somehow it's not the same as when a Family-values, sanctity-of-marriage, gay-bashing, xtian-coalition, Republican blowhard gets caught with the pool boy in a bathroom at a convent.

Where is "Maverick no More Redux: Republican-style"
Quoting morons with an (R) after their names...
I noticed former Senator Daschle is talking and acting like he still a Senator. I guess he misses those kick backs to line his pockets. Even former Senator Bill Frist is calling himself Senator as he is in Africa more likely doing medical experiments again this time on people who can't help themselves. As for McCain he's losing it fast he needs a VP quick. Next McCain will start talking to people who aren't there.
We don't need McBush to continue Bush's mistakes
I love this ad because it hits republicans on their strengths. "Maverick no more" attacks the idea that Mccain is a strong leader, Dems should focus on these type of attacks. Attack their strengths.
I'm sorry but I have to agree with the people pointing out the complete lameness of this ad, democrats saying mildly critical things about McCain just isn't going to cut it, who exactly is this ad aimed at? (It's been said already but preaching to the choir was the first thing I thought of, I was hoping there was something good coming towards the end but it just went on and on) Good job getting something out quickly but no-one who's considering voting for McCain is going to be persuaded by Kerry, Daschle, Dean or Hillary, no matter how true their statements, criticism from them is just going to improve is standing with wingnuts no matter what they say.
This ad proves that the democrats still don't get it, it's a feel good salve for democrats and completely toothless, sorry but they have to get some guts and really go for it, use pithy soundbites from people Republicans actually listen to, doesn't matter if they're relevant or even true, when the other side is willing to flat out lie to provide soundbites we need to use everything we can get, it's not as if there aren't any statements from Buchanan, Coulter, Limbaugh et al attacking McCain we can't use, so what if most of them are critical because he's unlike Bush and too liberal, cut them all together and finish with one from Chuck Hagel or Buchanan and now we're hurting them, stop playing so bloody fair and weak!!!
Glennser
It's really stunning that America is so racist that it has a hard time choosing between Obama and McLame. We're gonna pay bigtime for our idiocy if McPantload actually manages to steal it.
