help me out here. i'm not too bright why are crude prices dropping presently and there is new drilling/off shore drilling. they are getting nervous that the drop in crude going to happen without the new leases.....so step up the fear factor.

I find it interesting that 6 months before the President is out that the Republicans are holding political theater on an energy policy that the Bush Administration has not defined in 7+ years. The problem is that the Democrats allow the political theater to continue without matching the theater. Unfortunately, the Democratic Party cannot take the high road all the time when the Republican Party is trying to give away our country to big business. The Republicans do know how to move on an issue.
Meanwhile, the price of petrol has fallen drastically over the last few weeks. Is the crisis over? Not at all, but we need to move on alternative energy, which the Republicans oppose, include McCain, who claims that is part of his plan.

Somebody please explain something to me. Shay says we have natural gas off the coast of New England but instead we get it from Canada who is getting it off the same coast. How would our allowing drilling help the people of New England or anywhere else in the United States because I'm sure it is Exxon drilling in Canada just like they would be off the coast here. We would still be paying a commodity price which would not change significantly so what is the difference? They now take the risk of an environmental hazard rather than us, we still have a reserve so when there's runs out we still have it and Exxon still makes the profits. Other than taxes (which the Republicans are seeking to eliminate) and keeping money from those terrorist Canadians, why is that incentive to open our waters to Exxon?
So where was this circus clown since President Carter proclaimed to make this country energy independent with alternative energy?
What action did this grandstanding Shays take when President Reagan took the solar panels off the White House that Carter had installed. So Reagan could signal to the oil companies that they were in control?
And what has Shays or his district have to show for his inaction ever since he was in Congress?
A Congress that his party held a majority of all three branchs. Yet did absolutely nothing but gorge themselves with cash from "K" street that his party in fact help set up to reel in the cash for themselves.
Shays, from the majority party that actually worked less days than any other Congress in history under their majority party control. Now he wants to work?
You noticed that the republicans did not raise this "stay and work it out" routine till the end of the session..!
Youshould understand that they also have been blocking anything that would help Americans so that Democratic control of Congress can not get any kudos.
Politically, the repubs will let gas prices go to $10 per gallon before they would vote for a Dem plan to reduce the price and make America energy independent.
Besides, Republican/conservatives have always believed in free markets. By opening up more drilling areas to a market that has not used the areas they have to drill. And by republicans saying thatthey want to make America energy independent is a complete disruption to the free market.
For republicans to say they have a plan for renewable and alternative fuels would be altering the "Free Market". But you see they are in favor of oil and are altering the free market.
Republicans constantly tout the FREE MARKET and not to disturb it. But with their majority controls of Congress and their familiararity with filabusters to block.
They never once tried to cease subsidies from taxpayers to the Oil Companies, why?

Don't you know, Constituent? The repugs have said that the price of crude has been dropping ever since Dear Leader rescinded the executive order his daddy passed that banned offshore oil drilling. Isn't that "proof" enough of their messianic powers? Dear Leader revokes his daddy's proclamation, and oil prices drop; so Congress allows drilling, and that first drop of new oil 5 years from now will magically cause the price of oil to drop precipitously tomorrow!

Shays claims the natural gas from Canada comes from offshore wells. This is WRONG. It's a LIE.
Very little of Canada's gas comes from offshore. The vast majority - and this is America's single largest source of natural gas - comes from the eastern slopes of the Rockies (the Western Sedimentary Basin in BC and Alberta) and Saskatchewan. Some gas also comes from the Mackenzie River delta in the far north. There is no offshore drilling whatsoever on the West Coast. It's been banned for years, and the ban is still in place. There is one active gas field off the East Coast which produces about 6% of total Canadian production. If this is what Shays is referring to, he is lying.
Canadian gas that is burned in New England is almost all piped in from Western Canada. Less than 10% comes from offshore Nova Scotia.
Canada has to ship gas to the US due the terms of the Free Trade agreement. Thanks to NAFTA, Canada has no control over the domestic market for oil and gas, and no right to restrict exports to preserve domestic supplies. At current rates of consumption and export, Canada will run out of natural gas in 10 years unless significant new supplies are discovered. Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) terminals are already being planned on the east coast to make up this decline.
