A surprisingly good analysis of the Russian war in Georgia that Chris Floyd has. Accepting that the gray is there for both sides, with it about an equal shade for both. My God, I wasn't aware analyses like that still were around.

Love isn't fun no more

I kind of like this one. Simple and to the point.

"Most people abroad have NO IDEA of what really is going on at my country’s border and what the roots of the conflict are. This is the 3rd attempt by Georgia to wipe out Ossetians as a nation and seize their land. After the ethnic cleansing of 1992, when Georgians burned Ossetian villages, Russian troops and Georgian forces were stationed in S.Ossetia as peacekeepers with a UN mandate. Friday night, hours after Georgian president said he was not planning any military action, Georgia began bombing S.Ossetia. First they used jets and missiles, then they invaded Tskhilvali using tanks. The footage you could see on CNN and other Western TV stations who said it were Russians were bombing Georgia, was actually the footage of Georgia bombing Tskhinvali. Before communications were cut off, here in Moscow we got many calls from there people shouting they were being massacred by Georgian troops. Last but not least %u2013 the majority of residents of S.Ossetia are citizens of the Russian Federation."

Maybe Georgia President Mikhail Saakashvili should have put together a coalition of the willing like his hero Boosh the Decider before attacking?

Jumping Buddhas Ghost, I just saw a clip on the CNN Internet site of wolb blitzer "covering" the war that is happening in Georgia. A 30 second sound-byte, is that it. Does the US news Corps have their hears so far up their asses that they don't see the importance of what is going on?

This news is all over Europe and Asia, it's a joke how the US feeds it's minions through the Corporate filter. The people in the US (those who get their news from TV) must be walking around with no frigging idea of what is out in the rest of the world.

Blitzer is a toad, he interrupts the people who actually have something to say and inserts whatever garbage he is getting from that little bug in his ear.

I am very thankful for sites like C&L and all the others who manage to go through the garbage and pick out the real stuff.
Thanks John and nicole and the rest of you.

It's the Caucasus, you know. The average US reporter probably couldn't identify Georgia on the map (the nation, not the state. Probably the state, too). Why would they care?

LOL, is that why they don't report? Afraid the people in Atlanta will go to the streets with their torches and pitchforks and hunting rifles?
You've heard me speak of the Moron Factor before and I always put it at around 28 to 38%, but maybe I need to revise those figures.

The best nation in the world for geography is, I think, Norway, and 70-odd-percent of their population couldn't identify Macedonia. So...

the moron factor's everywhere.

Indeed, Chris floyd (lost me) when he chose "The Kremlin surge"as the title of his "opinion piece"... the reality is, American supported rebels from Georgia, have attacked NATO and Soviet troops that were stationed in Ossetia. Russia is not the agressor!

One possible reason why McCain continues to maintain his standing in the polls may have to do with an unwillingness of some Americans to acknowledge reality. Read more. http://www.tagg-lines.com/2008/08/where-is-outrage.html

Methinks you need a post-1991 map. There's no USSR anymore. The Soviet Union's dead, and it would require at least half of the Greek pantheon to resurrect it.

That might be better, considering tricks are as integral to statecraft as anything else.

Russia is way more "alive" than you give them credit for (probly too much mainstream media) Russia has one of the largest trade surpluses on the face of the planet...I will kick your butt in geography too...

Russian television is reporting finding mercenaries - Ukrainians and Blacks (presumably Americans, by implication) - among the dead Georgian soldiers. Fact? or propaganda?

And the Ukraine has closed ports in the Crimea to Russian ships.

And the Russians have encircled Abkhazia.

Did mercenaries help Georgia?

South Ossetian capital completely destroyed

Russia...yes. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics? No.

The Russian Federation's made a helluva comeback.

It would take a divine miracle to reunite Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Moldova, the Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazahkstan, Tajikstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgztan, and the Russian Federation all back in one big happy family. As long as all those nations are still in existence...

no USSR. You fail.

Considering how Putin's Russia is a slightly milder version of Tsardom...

propaganda. As much propaganda as the US claim that Iran fired on its ships in the Persian Gulf some months ago, and as likely to reflect reality.

For some reason, I don't think it was referring to the Soviets the German Revolutionaries established in 1917.

I wouldn't put it past GW to have left some American "advisers" with the Georgian troops the US was recently "training" ..

And of course it would be used as propaganda .. but that doesn't mean it's not true.

The first casualty of war is the truth.

Having 'Blacks' among your adversaries' dead combatants, is that akin to having 'bentonite' in your anthrax? Notwithstanding the factuality of either statement.

One thing we all can be overjoyed at, is having the likes of Georgie and his intrepid international keystone coppers to set things right.

Georgie will tell them real good!

If we are real lucky we won't get into World War III.

Tangling with the Russians would be quite a different business than the Iraqis.

The US has been training Georgia, and Bush's Administration didn't have to move mountains to do it, fear the Russian Bear would decide to revive their empire over Georgia again was quite a good motivator. Incidentally, those peacekeepers withdrew in 2004, after Iraq (suprise, surprise) turned out to be exactly the clusterfuck sane people expected it to become. Not to mention that fear of a larger neighbor is quite a good motivator to ally with the US, without the fantasy Neocon supervillains pulling the strings of the Tsiblisi government.

Georgia's no innocent. Russia's no victim.
