Job Killing John
By Nicole Belle Sunday Aug 10, 2008 11:00am
With Obama vacationing this week, the McCain campaign is planning on hammering him about jobs. Odd that. Because as this new DNC ad shows, jobs, at least, American jobs are definitely not a strong suit in McCain's economy.
AFL-CIO blog: (May'08)
(W)e learned one of McCain's fundraisers lobbied for the Colombian government, pushing an anti-worker trade deal that McCain supports (despite the fact that dozens of union members are killed every month). This week, it comes out that McCain is taking his economic advice from a former lobbyist for a bank with interests in the housing market. And already there's another revelation about someone on McCain's campaign staff: One of his top money men is responsible for outsourcing thousands of jobs.
Hat tip to Cliff Schecter at Firedoglake who yesterday wrote how McCain top adviser, Randy Altschuler, is the founder of OfficeTiger, a company based in Chennai, India. OfficeTiger's mission was to convince U.S. companies to outsource jobs to India-and it seems Altschuler has been quite successful in shipping out U.S. jobs.
In fact, McCain has been letting his lobbyists buddies control his attitude towards trade and jobs quite a bit, from Campaign Manager Rick Davis' ties to DHL...
Now, its business in a tailspin, DHL wants to combine operations with rival United Parcel Service and close its huge hub here. If the merger goes through, community officials and union leaders warn, staggering job losses will eviscerate the economy and the social fabric of nine struggling counties in southeast Ohio.
"Never before have so many people been abandoned at once," said (Ohio resident Mary) Houghtaling, who runs a local hospice. "It is inconceivable to think about losing 10,000 jobs in the first wave, and the estimates run in the 30,000 range as the wave continues."
But on Wednesday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, previously worked as a lobbyist for the German group, Deutsche Post World Net, and was paid $185,000 to help engineer the 2003 deal, plus another $405,000 for other work.
...to his work nixing the Boeing deal with the Air Force that may cost jobs in 40 states, but has benefited his lobbyist/campaigners:
But last week, McCain's subsequent effort to redo the tanker deal was dealt a setback. Government auditors ruled that the Air Force made "significant errors" when it rebid the contract and awarded the $35 billion project to Boeing's chief rival, partners European Aeronautic Defense and Space Co. (or EADS) and Northrop Grumman. It's likely the Air Force will have to redo the bid yet again, which analysts say will delay the replacement of the fleet's 1950s-era refueling tankers. The auditors' ruling has also cast light on an overlooked aspect of McCain's crusade: five of his campaign's top advisers and fund-raisers-including Tom Loeffler, who resigned last month as his finance co-chairman, and Susan Nelson, his finance director-were registered lobbyists for EADS.
Isn't that convenient? But he wants us to believe Barack Obama is bad on jobs?

Look, about this economy things and "jobs":
I don't want any of you to worry. McCain will be fine. He's got a little tucked away just in case there is an economic downturn. And his wife has her own savings, as well.
Conservatives always sell The Big Lie. Unless you're part of the rich and powerful 1%, they have no other way of appealing to you.
Raising taxes on the wealthy will not only result in a loss of jobs but will also cause the angels to cry.
The past almost eight years have shown exactly what McAyn will do to jobs. A million kids brought out of poverty by the Clinton economy have been thrown back into poverty.
Everything John does he loses. Nothing goes right and his aides are acting like they work for Obama. One would think it is really the RNC who wants McCain to lose the election. It would be better for the GOP to let a Democrat get the US out of this mess so the GOP can come back and start stealing again. Americans don't seem to have a problem with that as it's been down so many times before. Reagan and Bush Sr. bankrupt the US as Clinton balanced the US Budget only to see baby Bush come in and bring the US debt to 12 Trillion dollars in just 7 years. Americans have no problem selling the US to Foreign Counties just don't turn off American Idol and keep those rebate check coming.
American jobs are definitely not a strong suit in McCain’s economy.

"Economic surge" in the US? You mean like hiring Blackwater guys to do to us what they did to the Iraqis on the cheap? The best idea to come out from the McCain camp hands down. Economic surge on the horizon. Wow. You can't beat a plan like that.
Tax the rich, make them cry Mama. And tax the corporations that go offshore and cause American workers their jobs. And, while your at it, tax the churches that get involved in politics.
There's your money for one-payer healthcare.
The GOP view of supporting workers is tipping 50 cent tips for $2 shoe shines.
anyone who does not understand that the ONLY WAR that is really going on is:
CLASS WARFARE
is not paying attention....
and the penalty for not watching, and not acting:
is to continue to get your ass handed to you
BUSINESS is redistribution of Wealth
LAW is a redistribution of Wealth
NO BID CONTRACTS is a redistribution of Wealth
so how about some redistribution of WEALTH from the FEW to the MANY
that would be UNIONS, MINIMUM WAGES, SOCIAL SERVICES, HIGHER TAXES ON TOP WEALTHY
Straight talk....from a tired old black hearted buffoon who simply doesn't give a shit about and has no answers concerning Americans losing their jobs. And where the hell was Lou Dobbs on that one?
I dont think that the blue collar jobs in manufacturing of old are ever going to come back, that is why I think that we need to get started on the green industry. Green industry is going to be the next big growth industry and the Euros are already taking the lead on it, so we need to step up and start to be aggresive in promoting the startups in that industry.
WE ALL LOVE A LITTLE BUSH @ 10:
Exactly. Of course most members of congress, who could change the way Wealth is distributed have been bought and paid for by the very same people and corporations that want to keep the status quo.
In other words, we are fucked.
McCain is responsible for the current economic slowdown.... it is his government and party and leadership that got the U.S. where it is today.... he and his party have ruled for the last 8 yrs.... with almost all the power over that time....
I don't know how this guy can claim he has a good economic platform, when his rule for the last 8 years have been absolutely terrible for the economy....
Lowest dollar, biggest deficits, huge housing bubble and bust, the economy falling off a cliff, record high energy prices.... etc. etc. etc. waste of time and money in two wars as the rest of the world continues to pass the U.S. by....
McCain has done absolutely nothing on heathcare, energy policy, the economy, etc.... so he is only now saying he has the solutions.... where has he been for the last 8 years....????
What America's really debating about:

i think both candidates will work to keep the details, former jobs, and opinions of their economic advisors out of the news.
and the msm will, generally, happily comply.
corporate news outlers are all of the same opinion on the subject.
Vote Republican
We need to make America stronger...by cutting more taxes to the rich, offshoring more jobs, opening up trade, removing ALL regulation. Oh...yes...and more flags! America needs more flags...and praying in school and a federal requirement that all children be able to sing the Star Spangled Banner by age 3...oh...yeah...and neighborhood watch programs...to prevent terrorism, or preventing your neighbors from having anal sex...whichever offends you more...and keeping out teh gay...did I say we have to cut taxes to the rich...can't leave them out...they are the ENGINE of our economy...and business too...especially small business...like Walmart...and and...more money for the military...and we don't need social security...we got the stock market...and 401ks...makin' us RICH...RICH I tell ya...and in total support of your subju...errr...complici...uhhh...coooperation...yeah yeah...and assistance too..we're gonna give you a GAS HOLIDAY...yeah yeah...right in the middle of summer....and we're gonna open up the free market to coal stoves...yes...coal...that's the ticket...we're gonna eliminate all restrictions on coal...it'll be cheap...and then you can heat your home...errr...apartment...errr...cardboard box with nice shiny AMERICAN coal...just in time for the winter...
chris @ 7:
Oh, I'm not the only one that thought of outsourcing the economic recovery, when he said that?

Thanks bud.
Who cares about a fictional suit?
And I thought it was settled, Mary Ann is obviously more fun and lower maintenance.
obama has no choice but to shift/change the tax burden.
some of the super wealthy avoid taxes in addition to the current advantagous tax environment.
an example of that and it's not been in the media much at all.....but i can understand that since we have more important issues like john edwards personal life. anyways two european banks have been providing a tax shelter one the banks is UBS. i heard approximaely 100 billion dollars of taxes is being protected from being paid on an estimated 1.3 trillion dollars being held in these two financial banks.
many of the wealthy pay at 15% capital gains taxes.
obama is shifting the tax burden to those who NET over
250k.
the wealthly have had it good....it's time to shift that burden to a from the bottom up vs.top down economy.
remember warren buffet said himself that his secretary
pays more percentage wise in taxes than he does.
Great reporting but how is the MSM going to spin this?
10 WE ALL LOVE A LITTLE BUSH
You speak of SOCIALISM, sir. SOCIALISM. Why do you hate America!
"This message brought to you by the Republican National Committee"
"I'm John McCain, and because I am a soulless old bastard who would sell his own children to win the White House, I support this message."
surfjac @ 21:
Ignore it?
All the media has to do is keep reporting that the race is close.
Then when the election is stolen, it will seem legitimate.
Republican tax policy: Lower the taxes on the rich so they have money to invest in overseas factories; taking all the jobs with them. No jobs are left, so we need to lower the inheritance tax to zero, so we can take care of our rich kids in an economy without good paying jobs. (Like they were really qualified for the jobs anyways. Example: W )

Socialism sucks. I want to pay tolls for driving on private roads as soon as I leave my driveway.
When my house is on fire, I want the fire department to make sure that I'm up to date on my payments and to do a credit check on me before they come put it out.
If someone breaks into my home, I want the police to ask for payment in advance before they investigate.
MTM @ 24:
Better yet, pay them to ship the jobs overseas, ala Dick Armey and John McCain.

This could actually work out.

God we're pathetic.
I dont think McSame has ANY IDEA what he's for or against, but I'm certain Obama will explain it to him at the debates.

They write John McCain checks, to encourage him to keep pilfering our pockets to pay the bigger sum. Then they skim off some to pay John McCain with...
McCain lecturing Russia. There's a laugh.
If I was Putin...here's my response in private. "Listen you little turd. Your country is bankrupt. If it wasn't for the Chinese, your military would still be driving Jeeps. Russia has more than enough petroleum of its own to outlast you into the next decade. How would you feel if I decided to expand my business with the sheiks AND the Chinese, and cut your country out completely. What are you going to do? Destroy the world? Go ahead....make my day."

I really enjoyed our President being brought to his seat at the Olympics. LOL. The usher pointed at the seat and walked away. The only things missing were the cap with the clapping hands and a big rubber finger that said USA! LOL. I'm surprised the Chimperor didn't have a beer in his hand.

Harley-Davidson isn't cutting jobs yet, but their sales have declined over the years. I'm surprised that Obama's strategy of using profile and message building ads nationally, and attack ads locally isn't getting much traction. Here in Wisconsin, he's attacking McCain via radio ads for not supporting Harley-Davidson which I didn't even know was a issue until Obama brought it up. His campaign really knows what the hell they're doing.

Text from JSonline.com.....
Obama goes after McCain over Harley
By Craig Gilbert
Monday, Aug 11 2008, 12:58 PM
Invoking an iconic Wisconsin product, Barack Obama launched a radio ad in Milwaukee Monday accusing John McCain of turning his back on Harley-Davidson motorcycles by opposing “Buy American” rules for government purchases.
The Republican McCain has been a critic of provisions that require the US government to buy American products, saying they are costly to taxpayers and antithetical to free trade.
One such rule requires the Secret Service to buy American-made motorcycles; Harley-Davidson, headquartered in Milwaukee, is the only major US manufacturer.
The Obama ad alludes to McCain’s visit last week to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, where he told bikers, “Not long ago a couple hundred thousand Berliners made a lot of noise for my opponent. I’ll take the roar of 50,000 Harleys any day.”
The Obama ad, which the campaign said was running on AM and FM radio in Milwaukee only, declares:
“But when it comes to his record, American-made motorcycles like Harleys don’t matter to John McCain. Back in Washington, McCain opposed a requirement that the government buy American-made motorcycles. He said all Buy American provisions were, quote, ‘disgraceful.’”
An Obama spokesman said the Illinois Democrat supports the “Buy American” rules.
During a debate over the Homeland Security spending bill in 2005, McCain explained his view of such provisions, and expressed his disappointment in the provision requiring the Secret Service to buy American motorcycles.
“I firmly object to all ‘Buy America’ restrictions, as they represent gross examples of protectionist trade policy,” McCain said on the Senate floor in 2005. “From a philosophical point of view, I oppose such policies because free trade is an important element in improving relations among all nations, which then improves the security of our nation. Furthermore, as a fiscal conservative, I want to ensure our government gets the best deal for taxpayers and with a ‘Buy American’ restriction, that cannot be guaranteed.”
McCain plans to hold a town hall meeting Tuesday in York, Pennsylvania, which is home to the largest Harley manufacturing plant
