Piles of Words
Portrait of the candidates as a pile of words
This is pretty cool. The Boston Globe put together a visual composite of the most-used words on John McCain and Barack Obama's respective campaign websites. It should come as no surprise that John McCain's message is overwhelmingly about Obama and overwhelmingly negative. Seriously, just compare the top 4 words on each; it tells you all you need to know about this election.
Sean at 538.com offers some analysis on the desperation of McCain's media strategy.

Pile of words? All we get is a pile of shit from both candidates.
So, from this, I gather that Obama opposes visit drilling and supporters donate future change.
lol McCain's got nothing left but negative campaigning.
That is an interesting analysis. So, are McCain's webmasters now frantically...
a) ...scurrying to change the content and add a more positive message about their own candidate.
or...
b) ...scurrying to add more negative stuff about Obama.
I wonder if the biggest celebration in world history will occur if everyone wakes up and Obama won the election.
(Spare me the L.A. is a Ruskie traitor!!!!! Terrorist Muslim sympathiser bullshit wing nuts thanks I appreciate it. You know, free speech and all ya'll.)
And no I'm not moving to France either.
Looks like they found McCain's crypt:
I found this interesting and telling.
By the time November rolls around, people will be disgusted by the negativity. It didn't work in 2006, and hopefully it won't work in 2008.

LOL
Not bad.
Great minds talk about Ideas.
Average minds talk about Things.
Simple minds talk about Other People.
L.A. Confidential @ 5:
I diiiidn't quite follow that, but I know this:
win or eSPECially lose, we need to stay here to do everything we can to keep the GOP from destroying what's left of our country. And they WILL try to drag us down with them, if it's the last thing they do, like the Balrog and his whip.
Glad to know you are staying so we can keep frapping those idiots in the yamsack every time they need it (which is a lot).
Man, finding the word "McCain" in the McCain blog word cloud is like trying to find Waldo! I'm amazed it's even there at all.
Steaming Piles of Words

What the hell does that make me?
barkin @ 15:
I hope your master brought along the pooper scooper to clean up your crap.
Get a clue, you haven't heard anything from McCain yet. What you will hear is "Why would any American vote for a Indonesian Muslim (I'm against neither Indonesians nor Muslims) named Barry Soetoro?" And what you will hear is "A corrupt individual associated with people like recently convicted Rezko." Assuming of course that Fitz doesn't indict him before the convention.
Ron @ 18:
He will have to do it in the dark, though. This one is barkin at the moon!
jimbo @ 19:
*snicker*
You so funny.
Ridiculous, but funny.
Rather suspiciously weighted, s this whole thing fixed?
Pile of words = Tag Cloud
How did McCain's name not show up in his own Tag Cloud?
At any rate I just made two clouds comparing C&L and NRO Corner:
C&L
NRO Corner
Although http://wordle.net/ let's you enter the web address of any site that has read feed and that's how I made these. I'm not sure how it decides which words to auto edit (a, the, I, etc.). Because as I said, McCain's name appears on his site, but it missing from the Boston Globe's cloud (or at east I missed it). Looking at the tags I made, you'd think that d-bag Tinsley was big, big news according to C&L. Just sayin...
At the risk of going all "Concern troll"-y, I'm going to bet that, if the right pays attention to this image at all, they're going to pretend to be agog and aghast over how much Obama talks about himself (after all, Obama is one of the more common words on his own blog). I know, I know, context, but THEY'LL pretend NOT to know, and lead the charge that Obama is a self-centered elitist, countered with "You know, a typical Dem!" Then they'll guffaw and slap each other on the bsg and masturbate furiously to missing child photos and cry themselves to sleep, curled in the fetal position, sucking on the barrel of a shotgun and hoping and praying they twitch just enough in the night to pull the trigger, doing subconsciously what they so desperately want to do "in their right mind" but can not since suicide is a sin. But, you know, if you put a gun in your mouth and accidentally pull the trigger, whilst sleeping, well, that's just a tragic occurrence. God won't punish them for that, will He?
No. No He won't punish them. Not for that, anyway.
That's beautiful, because it uses actual data to cut through spin and framing, and show you exactly what the message is.
Can somebody please ask the Boston Globe to repeat this exercise with Bush's post 9/11 speeches? It will be clear what the message was there.
911/al Qaida/Saddam
Jo @ 20:
for your sake , i hope i am just barkin... but after this russian problem, you suckers will be livin' in a full on police state... grab your passports and head for the border... as i did... both sides of one coin, dude...
Just out of curiosity, I copied and pasted the text from a few news websites and made tag clouds using the wordle site versus using their feeds.
ABC News Front Page Cloud
MSNBC Front Page Cloud
Fox News Front page Cloud
CNN Front page Cloud
And again, just out of curiosity, I decided to makeover the clouds for C&L and NRO Corner using the copy and paste method from the front pages of each site respectively. Pretty different results compared to just inserting the web address and generating from the feed.
C&L Front Page Cloud
NRO Corner Front Page Cloud
All right, so now I've made a few of these Clouds using the exact same site that the Boston Globe says they used. I went to McCain's and Obama's Blog sites and copied and pasted all the text off their front pages and entered it into wordle.net. Here's what I came up with:
McCain Blog Front Page Cloud 8-14 2030EST
Obama Blog Front page Cloud 8-14 2030EST
Obviously, I copied EVERYTHING on the front pages, not just story text. As evident from the Digg, Facebook, etc tags in Obama's cloud, they're good at getting others to spread the word and have numerous stories on their front page. And I also created these clouds after the Boston Globe story came out, so I'm assuming that each candidate's blogs have been updated since then (maybe not though?). But I'm really, really curious how the Boston Globe cats did their Clouds because you can clearly see that McCain's name should have shown up in his cloud...
I'd love to see this done with George W Dipshit's 2004 speeches.
How overwhelming do you think the words Terrorist and 9/11 would be?
Zenrage @ 30:
Great Idea. You could do something spectacular with all the stupid crap he's said.
mushroom cloud, they hate us for our freedoms, terrrists, religion ect ,ect, ect.
They did it at wordle.com. Try it. It's free.
Poor fella, he is so jealous of Obama and his ability to speak well and inspire American people, where he can not, is a shame. He has nothing to offer 90% of the American people, but he is very good to the 10%, that will be the only recipients of his continued extension of the Bush Tax Cuts, while he and the republicans continue to finance these contractors in that illegal invasion, he also strongly supported and continues to this day.
The old stupid senile 73 year old bastard, continues to try to get American people to see him as some kind of a hero, because of his 40year ago military experience, that he spent the majority of his time in captivity, after he recked four air plains, I might add.
Our troops are counting on us to rescue them from that hell they have been subjected to and I believe that the majority of American people are going to be running to the polls to vote democrats in not just the presidency, but every congressional and senate seat, open.
This election should no doubt be a blow out. We have the only necessary ingrediant to win this race, and that is the power of the numbers, where we will be joining hands all over this country to form a circle around our country and just snatch it back from the nasty, filthy, dirty hands of some of the most vile, disgusting people who will say and do anything for a dame buck.
I always thought that there has to be something so important to most people that they would not take money to protect and defend, but these people in our national media, our political arena and corporate America have shown me that, there are a lot of people who will sell everything they are as a people, to have money and power, and they sleep very well as they do it.
Where are the words "my friends"?
last week the nytimes had an article by Adam Nagourney and Jim Rutenberg titled "In Loose Style, McCain Leads a Camp Divided" which was annoying enough that i sent in a letter to the editor, asking them what they are thinking publishing crap like that. below is part of the dissection i sent to the nytimes:
even though the article was purporting to discuss the serious failings of mccain's campaign, it did so using language which insidiously leaves the reader with a much more helpful impression than the facts themselves do.
the piles of words are important because the cumulative effect is the one which sticks most thoroughly.
StCyrlyMe2 @ 33:
He may be offering a good ageda to only 10% of the people, but if the polls are any indicator, damn near half of the people in this country support him!
80% of the people say the country is TOTALLY fucked up. 75% blame Bush and his GOP policies. Yet nearly 50% of the people are going to vote for McSame and the same failed leadership. Am I missing something here? Or are half the people in this country soooooo fucking stupid, that they cannot make the most basic (and obvious) intellectual connections?
