Prometheus 6: Krugman joins the chorus
gin and tacos: We're Number One!
Scott Horton: Military judge finds political manipulation in Gitmo - again
OK, see if you can wrap your head around the concept of this blog! In the linked post, he's still upset with those cheese-eating surrender monkeys. As J.C. Watts' father famously remarked, "a black person voting Republican is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders."

Does Obama come back from vacation today? Time is a wastin'.
Black Men For McCain - we're sure this isn't parody?
By PAUL KRUGMAN
By rights, John McCain should be getting hammered on economics.
If the Obama Camp cannot get their act together and win this thing I'm gonna go out and get hammered.
McCain steals the cross-in-the-dirt story from Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Classic.
One wiseacre's eulogy for Solzhenitsyn:
Champion bore Alexander Solzhenitsyn has died.
They made us read his Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich when I was at school. It’s about some gloomy Russian guy in a labour camp in Siberia, who goes on and on about a spoon he hid in his boot. That’s pretty much all that happens. Our English teacher asked what the spoon represented and the class dunderhead said it symbolised the lack of cutlery under Stalin.
I take the point that the Arctic labour camps of the Soviet Union can’t have been many laughs, but what did he expect? Then he showed up in England and went around with a solemn disapproving face, moaning on about how we had a free press, but all they printed was drivel, and everyone said, yeah, good point, we’d never noticed.
Miserable bloody Russian. Everyone was glad to see the back of him.
(Sorry for the full quote; no permalink)
A McCain aide said: "Senator McCain was in a motorcade led by the United States Secret Service and held in a green room with no broadcast feed."
This doesn't settle the mechanics of whether McCain glimpsed the early coverage-- Was McCain's media desk not emailing blog coverage to traveling staff? -- but it is worth keeping in mind that this wasn't exactly Hardball. These guys have been doing nothing but respond to questions like this for two years. And rarely do politicians face questions so easily answered with oft-repeated banalities.
(Also: The other possible Shakespeare reference here has to do with protesting too much.)

He was back by last Saturday night for that shindig with Rev Warren. He's on the campaign trail today doing a town hall meeting somewhere but I forget where.

I clicked on the link to go see if it was possible to verify on the toobz that this guy was for real. Thankfully, the site wouldn't load.
Now going to check on gitmo giggles...
Hell, I'm surprised that anyone, black or white, would support McCain right now. Why on earth would they? The man is the antithesis of what our country needs. No, Sen. Obama isn't perfect but the difference in the two men is unmistakable on every level.
The radical Christian right, calling for a “Christian state”—where whole segments of American society, from gays and lesbians to liberals to immigrants to artists to intellectuals, will have no legitimacy and be reduced, at best, to second-class citizens—awaits a crisis, an economic meltdown, another catastrophic terrorist strike or a series of environmental disasters. A period of instability will permit them to push through their radical agenda, one that will be sold to a frightened American public as a return to security and law and order, as well as moral purity and prosperity. This movement—the most dangerous mass movement in American history—will not be blunted until the growing social and economic inequities that blight this nation are addressed, until tens of millions of Americans, now locked in hermetic systems of indoctrination through Christian television and radio, as well as Christian schools, are reincorporated into American society and given a future, one with hope, adequate wages, job security and generous federal and state assistance. The unchecked rape of America, which continues with the blessing of both political parties, heralds not only the empowerment of this American oligarchy but the eventual death of the democratic state and birth of American fascism.

The Strange Case of Hiwa Abdul Rahman Rashul (Part 1)
By: WilliamOckham Monday August 18, 2008 4:36 am
[Today Emptywheel has a special treat in the form of a guest post from one of our very longtime commenters, William Ockham. Marcy alluded to this right before she left. WO really drilled deep into this story and has produced a great article. As the title suggests, there will also be a Part II that will delve into the implications. Give WO some love and participation in comments, and in light of the special nature of this post, please stay on topic for this one; if there are other issues, please feel free to use the previous post on the Bates Contempt Decision for those. Thank you. - bmaz]
In June 2004, Hiwa Abdul Rahman Rashul had his 15 minutes of fame when Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld answered questions at a press conference about the detainee known to American soldiers only as Triple X, the first ghost detainee transferred from CIA custody to the U.S. military. Rashul was suspected of being a member of Ansar al-Islam, a violent Kurdish Sunni Islamist movement opposed to the dominant Kurdish groups

The Bates Decision: A Question Unasked And Unanswered

I agree. Sorry I don't remember the name of the woman interviewed by David Shuster the other day, but in a nutshell, Shuster kept hammering her on why she is supporting McCain when she agrees with every position Obama holds and disagrees with McCain. Like, WTF is up with that?
She replied that she didn't want the leadership of the DNC to change. The Incumbent Party vote.
I've been away for a number of days but I'm sure the blogs were ablaze about that little insight.
Wow, the black guy for McCain site is hilarious. Also, probably a white guy.
I remember hearing somewhere that the chair of the National Black Republicans (or some group to that effect) was Sean Hannity, and 14 out of 15 board members were white. The one black guy who was on the board had never heard of the group.
Classic. Rovian. Tactics.
The very late Solzhenitsyn is reincarnated as Sen John McLiar..did McCheater's prison person make the sign of the cross in the dirt or did he draw a picture of a cross in the dirt?
dosido @ 11:
That sounds like the lady he had on his show who was supposedly pissed because Hillary didn't win the race. You never know if these are Hillary supporters or repub operatives pretending to support Hillary.
henry wallace @ 13:
The way I heard McCain tell the tale in the past was that the man drew the cross in the dirt or sand or whatever.
“a black person voting Republican is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.”
or
A black person voting Republican is like Americans voting for Bush's second term......
Oh wait, we did.
Gosh, too much credit is given to Americans. They aren't ignorant of the French.
They are ignorant of the entire world!
Geez, Krugman thinks Obama should focus on the economy.
Such insight! What a journalist!
dosido @ 11
Just another person who drinks the KoolAid that the GOP hands out. Truth has no meaning in that Republican FunHouse (TM).
pissed off patricia @ 14:
Zackly. In a way, it doesn't matter. It's all about Power of the Few. Policies are immaterial. And nations don't invade other nations. Until we need to. Or something.
As J.C. Watts’ father famously remarked, “a black person voting Republican is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.”
I actually heard him say it. I was working on his his campaign for state office in Oklahoma for Labor Commissioner...
woody, tokin librul @ 21:
I'd heard the "chickens/Col. Sanders" quote to describe the Log Cabin Republicans.
Every president has a "kitchen cabinet" of advisors that hold no formal positions in the Administration.
Typically, they are wise old friends and long time politicians.
So, who the hell is gonna be in McCain's kitchen cabinet? Is he going to hold seances to contact Reagan and Eisenhower?
"A black person voting Republican is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders." Beyond true.
I run around with quite a few black professionals here in Chicago(mainly networking, business, etc.). Every single "black Republican" in these circles is a Republican solely for business purposes. One CPA told me "Of course I hate those fuckers. They use us and we use them."
That 'Christianist' link above is scary shit. And right on the money too.
Iraq seen abandoning most short-term oil contracts
* Reuters
* , Sunday August 17 2008
(Adds background)
BAGHDAD, Aug 17 (Reuters) - The Iraqi government is likely to abandon plans to sign short-term contracts with foreign oil companies, negotiations over which have been halting, a senior U.S. diplomat in Baghdad said on Sunday.

GALLONS OF IRAQI BLOOD FOR OIL
theWalrus @ 3:
what will you NOT blame Obama for?
I'm just askin'.
Left&Left @ 24:
now switch colors and estimate how many white people will vote for Obama against their best interests because they would never vote for a black person (forgetting, of course, that Obama is half white).
pissed off patricia @ 8:
McCain has adopted all the bromides, all the slogans, all the no-brain America-first rhetoric that the folks find so familiar and comforting. It doesn't matter that he has contradicted himself a million times, most people don't care. The want what they want, and McCain seems to be giving it to him. And he's white.
He was so slick the other night with Rick Warren, he just reeled off the pro-life, tough-guy, POW, strict constructionist stuff like he's believed it all his life. McCain could win this.
Annoyed Canuck @ 29:
Feeding red meat to the savages has worked for the GOP for the last 30 years.
BaScOmBe hearts Lara Logan and Rachel Maddow @ 28:
I get your point, but the exclusive, race hating history of the Repubs can't be denied or ignored. These so called "Black Republicans" are simply holding up a mirror to reflect the same disingenuous placating bullshit offered at them.
This is a little off topic, but can anyone provide concrete data showing the oil spills caused by Rita or Katrina?
I was listening to KNTH here in Houston this morning and this snake they have on in-between their political bashing of Baaarakk Husain Osama bin laden - the guy they have on to spread the REAL hard to buy White house talking points Chuck Tiller - says “do you know how much oil was spilled during Katrina and Rita? ... ZERO.”
Now, … I'm used to these people just making shit up and selling it ... and I'm used to this smarmy serpent peddling the most ridiculous of right wing theology every single day.
But really??? They can just have their own reality??
I know this should come as no surprise to anyone but I still find it hard that a station that calls itself “News Talk” can just so blatantly lie.
Another example would be Rudy Giuliani the other day still peddling that “China is drilling off our coast” fabrication that has been completely debunked at this point. Hugh Huitt was remarkably quiet during this portion most likely knowing for a fact that it was complete bullshit but allowing that “belief” to be shared with his uneducated listeners that most likely still believe it.
Now that I expect, but this morning was just plain LYING.
They are getting very desperate as their belief and reality keep clashing with one another me thinks.
McCain, lying? Inconceivable!
Horton's one of the best writers on the Gitmo trials.
I have to say, that American Carol movie trailer may quite possibly be the dumbest thing I've ever seen.
