Since when does McCain consider John Lewis an advisor?

On Saturday night, at the forum at Saddleback Church, the Rev. Rick Warren asked John McCain to name “the three wisest people that you know that you would rely on heavily in an administration.” McCain listed three people: Gen. David Petraeus, Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), and eBay CEO Meg Whitman.

It was nice, I suppose, for McCain to mention Lewis in this context. Indeed, I don’t doubt for a moment that Lewis is quite wise and would have a lot to offer McCain in the way of advice.

But it was more than a little odd to see McCain tout his support for Lewis’ wisdom given that McCain has largely ignored Lewis during their decades of concurrent congressional service. Jonathan Stein has the story:

At the time of McCain’s Selma speech, a Lewis associate told my colleague David Corn that McCain has never been close to Lewis. Lewis was not told about McCain’s speech in Selma in advance, nor was he invited to attend.

In response to McCain’s latest invocation of his name, Rep. Lewis said in a statement requested by Mother Jones, “I cannot stop one human being, even a presidential candidate, from admiring the courage and sacrifice of peaceful protesters on the Edmund Pettus Bridge or making comments about it.” But, he added, “Sen. McCain and I are colleagues in the US Congress, not confidantes. He does not consult me. And I do not consult him.”

Well, no, of course not. McCain is a conservative Republican with an underwhelming record on civil rights. Lewis is a progressive Democrat who has championed civil rights throughout his life.

McCain is going to “rely … heavily” on Lewis if elected? We should be so lucky.

The McCain Campaign -- throw shit to the wall and see if it sticks.

Was this a senior moment? Perhaps he meant to say a different name? This is just ...odd.

I've often wondered ... does this site notice items of interest on other blogs, then wait a day or two to post them here as if they're something new? Seems like you're always a day or three behind TPM and/or Atrios.

yeah I thought that was kind of weird. Its great, though that Lewis came out and said McCain doesn't even talk to him. Is their any consequences for lying repeatedly while in a church?

Reuters/Zogby Poll: McCain Makes a Move, Takes 5-Point Lead Over Obama

Obama loses ground among Dems, women, Catholics & even younger voters

UTICA, New York – As Russian tanks rolled into the Republic of Georgia and the presidential candidates met over the weekend in the first joint issues forum of the fall campaign, the latest polling includes drama almost as compelling - Republican John McCain has taken a five-point lead over Democrat Barack Obama in the race for President, the latest Reuters/Zogby telephone survey shows.

McCain leads Obama by a 46% to 41% margin.

He meant to say Lewis Carroll

Just have to say, I live near Rep. Lewis in DC. Lewis is nothing but a class act. Impressive man and McCain would be lucky to have a relationship with him, but talk about calculated answers, they have nothing to do with each other. Pander much?

"Petraeus"????
Pander much?

And Meg Whitman's offering her advice for free, but the shipping and handling costs will substantially raise the national debt.

How come we never hear about his Ex-Wife Carol?

John McCain's disfigured ex-wife Carol resurfaces, outraging current disfigured wife

John McCain didn't endure five and a half years in the Hanoi Hilton to come home to you, honey.

London's Daily Mail reported on John McCain's reclusive ex-wife Carol, who's said very little publicly about her ex-husband since she was dumped for beer heiress Cindy Hensley. After a horrible 1969 car accident that left Carol disfigured and five inches shorter, McCain returned home and was allegedly "appalled" by her appearance.

Appalled by his wife's appearance? Well, thank goodness John McCain doesn't behave like that any more.

I really think this skeleton is worthy of bringing out for a bone rattle.

I was wondering the same thing when I heard him say that. I had to google john lewis to make sure he was the democrat who admired martin luther king jr. that I thought he was. strange. reference. he must not have thought out that answer in advance??

Well, at least he didn't say that he confers with God on a regular basis.

MEG WHITMAN??? Like we need someone else telling the president how to sell off our country.
Tell me this nob didn't have someone feeding him the questions while he was in his limo-cone of silence.
What a hack.

It's like when you go to a party and your a metalhead, but erveryone at the party is into soul and r&b, so you say you

like Anita Baker. The Satyricon shirt your wearing makes people doubt your sincerity.

It was definitely a senior moment. He meant to say Jerry Lewis. He meant to pander to the French.

I often rely on the teachings of Mao, Pao, Tao, Kerpao, Shakespeare, Aristotle, SuckRaTease, Plato, Pluto, Bluto, Blotto, Karl and the other Marx Brothers, the Smothers Brothers, Folger Brothers, Warner Brothers, and Stewie Long.
There are moments when Christ, Mohammad, and Ricky Lake help too.

John THE BUSH REPUBLICAN McCain mostly relies on BUSH for his voting record.... and on his ample gut to determine when to BOMB the Persians.

Bangkok@11, The fact he dumped his wife for a newer, younger model should have the Religious-right and conservatives HOWLING for blood. I find it ironic and hypocritcal how they are willing to put aside their beliefs when it benefits them. These are the people who listen to Limpballs who never question his many divorces or drug issues. Sick, ain't it?

Of course McAnus is going to throw out a democrat's name. His AMBITIONS for becoming president are going to pull out more of this "play for the audience" crap that will come back to bite him in the long run... Like when he slammed Obama for having an ambition for being president, while he had used that exact word to describe his 2000 run!

I would say that John's other biggest advisory would be Jesus Christ!

If Jesus says to love one another, then John says war
If Jesus say to feed the poor, then John would feed the Rich with tax break

John didn't say he agreed with Jesus, nor with Lewis, but only that their action is his biggest influence (of doing the opposite)

McCain needs the votes so he'll say anything now. Look for McCain to say God wants him to be President and that Dr. King supports him not Obama. McCain knows Americans are so stupid they will believe what their told as they have for the pass 7 years. We know the Bush Administration and Saudis were behind the 9/11 attack but we still follow the lies it was Bin Laden. We heard that Iraq had WMDs and the Mushroom Cloud we still believe it because the White House said it's true. We believe we don't torture even when we're shown pictures because Bush said we don't torture. Look McCain knows as long as Americans stay stupid and dumb it's a shoe in to the White House. Some Americans who have lost their jobs and homes seem to have woke up but others are like sheep they just keep following along until they get tossed out. Chicken Little the Sky is falling comes to mine.

Maybe he meant Jerry Lewis...the comic, not the congressman.

Obama’s Remarks at Veterans of Foreign Wars Conference

After reading the PUMA thread, I felt compelled to post there...and I'll post it here also. The conversation I am referring to occurred a week ago when the PUMA shrill appeared with Abrams on MSNBC.

My girlfriend, who is one of the most highly paid disaster recovery engineers, that’s software architect or “programmer” to the uninitiated had this to say one evening to all the distressed female Hillary supporters.

“If you want to compete in the so-called man’s world, you have to learn to lose like a man”.

McCain looks and sounds like a old man, he has forgetful moments and senior moments. Get ready for all the old geezers voting for McCain! These older people want to live in the 50s with all-white suburbia and the corner store. These people are afraid of change. Thanks to the older folks and selfish Baby-boomers, there will be nothing left for our generation or our grandchildrens generation. They refuse to see our country as a melting pot. The fact that whites will be the minority in a couple of decades scares the crap out of them.

if obama pulls this crap the media will interrupt the olympics broadcast with an important news break story.

I don't understand the reliance on the age issue to bash John McCain --- it's sour grapes and grade school. Have you checked out the mean age on the Supreme Court? And george bush barely had a 3 hour work day --- McCain has been working a lot harder than that. Why not attack his Senate work, votes, etc. Is that too hard? And if he is the Repuclican devil you say he is --- why did Kerry four years ago ask him to be his running mate? The most important question for me is ----- HOW is John McCain doing it? He is not adored by his own party. He pokes you in the ribs when delivers the punch-line to his own joke. Yet obama leads not....why? If you watch the Saddleback church interviews with all those softball questions ---- what do you come away with? Does/can obama sway the swing voters? Does he inspire the left wing of the democratic party? Does he support equal rights for gay people? Maybe my questions will be answered by the bump/or lack thereof after next week in Denver. He started off last year as a new kind of politician --- and one who could usher in change --- he has lost that edge in the last couple of months by his own actions and positions.

When I first heard his comment about John Lewis I had the same reaction I had when George Bush said his favorite book, or the one he had read most recently, or whatever, was the Bible. I didn't anymore believe that horseshit than I do this one. My second thought was that this is a pretty lame-ass way to suck up to the memory of MLK...the man he, McLame, didn't think worthy of special recognition.

The one thing this does show me is that my theory about McLame having the questions in advance is pretty-much shot to shit. Even he could have come up with something better than this.

Come on MSM!!!! DO YOUR JOBS! This man lies every time he opens his mouth anymore and NONE of you (except KO) even ask him about it. And you wonder why your viewers are leaving in droves?

John McBigot IS running a slick, covert, subliminally racist campaign....with thanks to the road map of hate and paranoia provided by Hillary, Bill and their vile peon hatchet man Mark Penn. Grandpa and crew are placating the fears of uneducated whites, some of who can be taught to believe Obama's success is at their expense and their lives will change for the worst with a negro as President.
