Midday Open Thread

Crooks and Liars readers helped to make this video. Back in November 2007, we ran the story boards for this ad here on the Open Thread, and C&L readers responded with some great comments and input. The Oregon Democratic Party is debuting this final version this fall.

I wish the convention was in the eastern time zone. Waiting until 10:30pm for the good speeches to begin is tough. Thank goodness for c-span rerunning them early in the morning so I can catch what I might have missed after I crashed.

That's a great spot and to the point....

I like it!

It's gonna be very interesting to see what Hillary has to say tonight and how she says it. She could be a hero if she does it right. She has a lot of pressure on her, that's for sure.

I wish people all over your country could see this video. I as a Canadian am not crazy about john mccain as your next president.

I like the way the thoughts are tied together in that ad. Simple but straight to the point with one thought enforcing another.

Right On :-)

If she doesn't do the right thing...she won't have a chance in hell of ever becoming prez.

Good one.

it's the democrats fault for the oil prices. i thought it was the falling dollar that has devalued 40% last 6 yrs. the (D)congressional members are on break i believe are making a good move here demanding compromise. the (R) are clearly using this to fool the vulnerable public. drilling will do little to nothing short term. in addition to that the oil would go on the world market.

Well done. But there were parts (when the lines were delivered by many people in unison) that I simply couldn't understand.

challenge to the Dems?

I hope so!

Wouldn't it be nice if this didn't have to add the words "of Oregon"? Maybe the state level Dem's can put a little backbone in the national party.

Outstanding! Sending link to others now.. :-)

first wal-mart union started in china.....i need to look at this more but i don't understand. this should be news on the tail end of that story of u.s. wal-mart store managers
telling fellow employee's not to vote(D)

If Pelosi & Reid had a tiny stone between them (to match the puniness of their collective intellect), they'd causes to be drafted off-shore drilling legislation which would require the refinement and sale of that oil--or any resource recovered from such exploration and exploitation--to the USer people, alone. It would also forbid NEW leases for off-shore exploitation until development had been either begun or proved unsustainable in existing leases.

Such a piece of legislation would answer the 'popular' furor for action now, and it should amply demonstrate what legislators were in and out of the pockets of the mega-Corps, which is why--of course--no such bill will EVER be introduced.

Another thing which, if the protestations of the powerful were taken at face value, should be on the agenda of the Next presnint is 'nationalization' of the energy industry.

It makes no sense, from a nationalistic, patriot perspective to permit the ownership of "vital national security resources" by international (albeit nominally "Murkin") corporations.

I'll believe "change" is on the horizon when the sails of either of those two legislative frigates are sighted along the shores of the Potomac...

Nice spot , unfortunately the dems in Denver are whoring around with corp lobbyist so that the commons are sucked up by greedy multinationals. Fuck the democratic party!

My only criticism is that the aerial crowd shot at the end is so badly cloned and pieced together that it is obvious they have tried to make a crowd of twenty appear to be 1000. The text and delivery by the actors is very strong though as is the editing. Deal with the bad clone job and I think its great.

Now they've gone too far...

Fox News Says: CNN Is Partisan & Jon Stewart Is Out Of Touch

While it is just plain stupid to accuse others of being biased, they be really sorry that they attacked Jon Stewart!

Sorry, but the ad's just not my cup of tea at the moment. A bit overly-dramatic. I'm having a hard time mustering up hope that things are gonna turn around any time soon. Anything less than sweeping and monumental gains in November will mean more of the same and even with that I wonder...what with "conservative" democrats and rightwing control of major Media.

When I hear that polls are close I throw my hands up in exasperation and the fact that the Dems did *nothing* about paperless e-voting machines since winning in 2006 makes me fear for the worse.

That ad for Move-On Obama/Biden sticker looks like an ad for Pepsodent.

I like the content but am so tired of this particular "style" of commercial. The format of different people saying all the parts of a monologue is getting boring. I would like to see something different, something a little more fresh.

At least there wasn't any overlap during the transitions, or repeating like the last bit of a phrase, that is really beat.

We have evidence of genocide - Russian investigators

It's Russian news but maybe new evidence will blow this wide open.

Russian parliament have voted unanimously to ask President Dmitry Medvedev to recognise the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
If NATO makes a strong push to bring Georgia into the alliance, Russia will recognise Abkhazia and South Ossetia

Boring.

MarketWatch: Fewer Americans without health insurance; real income gains

Fewer Americans went without health insurance in 2007 than in the prior year, while there was a gain in median household income adjusted for inflation, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday. The number of people without health insurance fell to 45.7 million in 2007 from 47 million in 2006, the government said in its annual snapshot. Median household income adjusted for inflation rose 1.3% to $50,233. The poverty rate hit 12.5% in 2007, compared with 12.3% in the prior year - not statistically different, according to Census.

Crunch the numbers:

Median household income adjusted for inflation rose 1.3%

Poverty rate hit 12.5% in 2007, compared with 12.3% in the prior year
(12.5 - 12.3) / 12.3 = 0.016 = 1.6%

So a 1.3% increase in household income IS significant.
But a 1.6% increase in the poverty rate is NOT.

Stewart pillories them almost nightly. The Faux folks understandably resent it a little when the mere repetition of a Faux clip can elicit howls and gales of derisive laughter from a rendomly selected studio audience. My fondest wish for Murdoch (who by the way owns a beeeg piece of St. Barry) and Faux would be that they feast upon their own excrement sufficiently that they rather painfully expire.

Crooks and Liars need to start covering more of the DNC protests. These demonstrations by grassroots activists are far more important than the same old, corporate politics that's occurring inside. Just as Nanci Pelosi and the not-so-liberal Democrats have given the Bush administration a free ride, C&L seems to be giving these corporate Dems a free ride as well.

we know nationalization won't happen any time soon. i
don't know enough about their strategy but it seems to me reid/pelosi are countering the (R) with an offer they will refuse. i believe i read or heard a while back that some foreign oil companies were not paying the agreed
royalties to u.s. tax payors for the drilling/land leases.
this is also being challenged....if granted my understanding is the oil wouldn't be available for a good ten yrs. and have little effect on prices. i'm not sure the oil lobby's would allow this oil to only be sold to u.s.
i still believe this quick price jump was due to speculators and i understand we need/will always have speculation but there could be some regulation requiring leverage to cost more.

That is great! Go National with it!

In the words of Chris Matthews, "I felt a twinge go up my leg" watching that video ;-)

Leave Stuart Alone!

The results of the new Pew Survey on News Consumption (taken every two years and released this afternoon) suggest that viewers of the "fake news" programs "The Daily Show"and "The Colbert Report" ,b>are more knowledgeable about current events than watchers of "real" cable news shows hosted by Lou Dobbs, Bill O'Reilly and Larry King, among others -- as well as average consumers of NBC, ABC, Fox News, CNN, C-SPAN and daily newspapers.

more

This spot should go national. Can the DNC get the rights to play this all over the country? I'd love to see this played at the convention!

Beautiful video!

The song sung last night at the convention by John Legend and the Agape singers, was another beautiful piece. And of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Wow I was in tears the whole time. Hope the Dems keep it for their theme. Can you post that video clip ??

Re 'news: One more media b.s. artist is back in form: Nora O'Donnell just told Governor Napolitano from Arizona that "no one in that crowd can articulate Obama's economic policy." No one?? WOWIE!

Remarkable insight isn't it, especially for a woman who spends her days on her ass reading from talking points or a teleprompter or an earpiece and who never goes outside, because she doesn't really care what's ...outside.
Do ya Nora??

I had the exact same reaction. I stopped the video to have a look at that badly cloned crowd shot.

Real good ad. Made me a little sad.

WOW. JUST IMPRESSIVE

We'll see how so called liberal media will handle the new revelation about Gerald Ford being a SNITCH for the FBI , because the complicit elite media will ignore the new FACTS , from RELEASED DOCUMENTS . I found this on What really Happen .com , the site that doesn't bother with baseless accusation arguments , but speaks truth to power .

While on the Warren Commission during the JFK investigation , Gerald Ford was an informant for the FBI and informed them that TWO members , doubted that Oswald killed JFK .

Google Ford , FBI , Informant .

Very nice.

Yay Oregon, we rock!!!

Made me proud to be a Oregonian.

Awesome.

We are the Oregon Borg Party. Resistance is futile.

As an Oregonian and a registered Democrat...

I'd like to know what ever happened to the tag line, "Vote the Democratic ticket" or "Vote straight Democrat" or something along those lines? It is not emphasized enough - hell, EVER! Why the hell NOT?

Walden in District #2 is vulverable, but you can't tell as there is an utter lack of visible opposition.

How do you all like knowing the FBI and homeland security moniter every e-mail and posting we do on internet, we are living under a dictatorship, elections will never make a difference now, people are even scared to vote thier conscience.

We the people?

Too bad half the money to air it comes from corporations. The entire convention this week is financed by corporations. Why not just say "we the corporations"? That would at least be accurate.

I'm sure Hillary will say all the right things tonight (as she has to with so much attention on this speech) but it won't change anything. The damage is done.

I wish they had given her a speaking slot sometime during the day on Monday, between some random high school choir and the guy who reminded the delegates to fill out their forms.

Wow! That's a good message about standing up for what you want to protect and defend!

Maybe if more people stood up to the neocons, lobbyists, and Christofascists in this country, a lot of barriers would come broken down to lay the way for progress and hope (at least if we are ready for it).

Wow! The Oregon ad is wonderful!!

The ad won't appeal to everyone, but it sure appealed to me.

At the end, I found myself thinking of the little Rebel Pods that come flying out in the end the third act in Star Wars to take on the Death Star. Maybe it's just that Western sensibility, but it's sure refreshing to see people stand up for what they care about.

Friggin A this is SO well done, can someone explain why it is not running in all 50? JUST don't over play it -- how about mixing in some different tag lines at the end like ---- "LISTENING MR. MCcain?"

Makes me glad that I am, as I have been for the last 20 years, a registered Oregon voter.

Believe.

Great stuff! Two comments. When the crowd first comes together, it's hard to understand what they're saying. And, in the last (aerial) shot of the crowd, it's hard not to conclude that it was Photoshopped. You can almost see the squares outling the cut-and-paste. Touch it up, Oregonians.

Beautiful ad!

Yes, I do hope you can share it with other state parties, customize it with their state-names, etc.

And it would be nice to clean up the audio of the crowd-voices so we can make out what they're saying, and improve the "cloning" as suggested above.

If Ted Kennedy's appearance and Hillary's unity speech give some other ideas for ads discussing Democratic Party ideals, why not create a whole mini-series or cycle of ads for the sake of variety, to keep things interesting, so it isn't just one ad getting run into the ground?

(Like there isn't just one "Messin' With Sasquatch" ad, just one Geiko "Gekko" ad, or just one "Caveman" ad.)

is that Lindsey Lohan?
