KBR Accused of Human Trafficking
By Nicole Belle Friday Aug 29, 2008 12:15pmWhy do I get the feeling this will get swept under the rug and nothing will happen to KBR? Will their contracts in Iraq be affected at all?
AP via Yahoo: (h/t ysbaddaden)
Defense contractor KBR Inc. and a Jordanian subcontractor are accused of human trafficking in a federal lawsuit filed in Los Angeles.
The suit alleges 12 Nepali men were being transported to Iraq against their will when they were killed in an insurgent attack.
The lawsuit filed Wednesday by an attack survivor and family members of victims claims subcontractor Daoud & Partners recruited the men in Nepal to work in hotels and restaurants in Jordan.
The company allegedly seized their passports when they arrived in Jordan in 2004 and had them sent to Iraq to work on a U.S. air base.

murder, rape, torture, larceny, and now slavery.
that's KBR
What is left on the list of things never to do that these people have not done?
Jesus Christ on a cracker, that shocks even my already numbed and flaccid sensibilities. Say hello to our new army, folks.
This is nothing new. These guys and Dycorp run giant child kidnapping and sex slave rings. They are Nazi's with immunity.

These people are evil and are one of the reasons that you should be armed. Bush and Co or who ever could put these guys on your streets if he (they say so) and you had better stand your ground.
BTW

Being armed won't change a thing.
It will be swept under the rug because it's been done time and time again. It will be swept under the rug because Rove has picked a female governor with little experience to be John McCain's running mate, and much of the focus in the news will be upon that for the next 2 months. It will be swept under the rug because nothing has been done to Bush or Cheney and the total destruction they have caused to this country, and those in power have been more emboldened because they have gotten away with murder.
It should be pointed out that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama wishes to leave the approximately 100,000 civilian contractors in Iraq. This, of course, will do nothing to lessen the fears of the Iraqis that the United States wishes to continue to apply the yoke of oppression and suffering and misery against the Iraqi people. All this coming from the [alleged[ antiwar candidate and agent of hope and change.
Look, to make a democracy cake you have to break a few eggs. Unless they are fertilized and inside a woman's womb. Then you can't break them you fucking fuck!
Call it what it is: SLAVERY
Bottom line: CHEAP LABOR
Erroll @ 7:
Well, you know, that simply points out that Obama is not the "radical" that many repugs are trying to paint him out to be. I don't know what exactly or how exactly Obama will end the war and occupation in Iraq, nor do I know any of how McCain may or may not end it. But I do know that Obama has strong intentions of ending it and strong intentions of doing so responsibly. 100,000 civilian contractors in Iraq is still less than 100,000 civilian contractors plus 140,000 military personnel.
As right wingers LOVE to point out: Those civilian contractors volunteered to go.
I guess this is an improvement over their previous work of human killing.
Oh say it ain't so...a company with close personal ties to the US Govt -- engaging in slavery?
These men were party of the war effort, and they were "pressed into service" in defense of liberty, justice, freedom and Democracy.
God Bless America
thank you for posting on this....are there any other sources carrying this story- ie. CBS - 60 Minutes etc...( it would be great if NON Internet people knew about it too..)
General Jack D. Ripper @ 11:
I simply find it stunning that you are attempting to somehow rationalize Obama's advocacy of leaving those armed civilian contractors in Iraq even as you admit that you have no idea "what exactly or how exactly Obama will end the war and occupation in Iraq..." You also seem to find it comforting that the Republicans will not confuse Obama with [God forbid] being a radical.
Get ready for a really radical thought. How about if those armed civilian contractors have absolutely no business being in Iraq where they can harass and terrorize and kill Iraqis. Of course if they ever get caught doing this they have no fear of being prosecuted since these armed civilian contractors are immune from both Iraqi and American jurisprudence.
Your statement that 140,000 military personnel will no longer be in Iraq per Obama's directive is false since Obama wishes to leave a residual force of anywhere from 32,000 to 80,000 American soldiers in the region even after his phased [as opposed to immediate] withdrawal finally takes place. This is why to the average Iraqi it makes little difference who becomes president as both Obama and McCain have little interest in ending the suffering of the Iraqi people. Yet so many people as well as liberals continue to believe the myth that Obama is an antiwar candidate.
Raytheon, Bechtel, Carlyle Group, Dyncorp, Contolled Demolitions Inc... These guys have shady reputations as contractors for the Pentacon, ahem, I mean Pentagon.
Why do I get the feeling this will get swept under the rug and nothing will happen to KBR?
Well Nicole thats because your intuition along with your general knowledge and experience of the party that believes "The Best Way To Rob a Bank Is To Own One" is absolutely correct.
L.A. Confidential @ 19:
Like most of us course.
Shouldn't be to hard to throw these KBR guys in jail eventually.
The weapon is time.
In the capitalist system, profit is derived from the owners of the means of production convincing others to sell their labor for less than their labor value. Nothing wrong with that.
In the criminal system, profit can be derived from recruiting these laborers based on one deal and then forcing them to do a job you'd have to pay someone else a lot more to do. Plenty wrong with that.
I'm sure KBR "deeply regrets" the loss of life in this unfortunate attack. The problem, of course, is in the reasons for that regret: loss of capital investment, loss of criminal investment, and -- hopefully soon -- loss of plausible deniability.
and why do you think there is a "terrorist no fly list" ?
cheney makes people disappear as enemy combatants
and voila, you have an instant work force....that includes
any American that disagrees with cheney for ANY REASON !!!!!
bush/cheney and the fucking reichwingneocon christian coalition
would be more than happy to let the illegal immigrants into
this country, if they could just make slaves out of them and
abuse them all they want.....remember the pres/vp are
above the law.
Why do I get the feeling this will get swept under the rug and nothing will happen to KBR?
Because IOKIYAR?
Erroll @ 7:
You got a source for this? Would be interested in where you got that idea.
Erroll @ 7:
It should also be pointed out that Barack Obama will have little or no say in what American companies operate in Iraq unless Iraq is accorded the same status as Cuba.
I do wish the ideologues on both extremes would put their brains in gear before putting their fingers to the keyboard.
Using slaves is quite something else. I thought nothing these people could do in pursuit of the dollar would shock me. I should have realized that a former subsidiary of Halliburton with sub rosa ties to the parent company and our Vice President would rip out the hearts of babies were there a market for them.
Pin @ 26:
Barack has Brezinski(formerly Tri-Lateral Commission) as an advisor. Zbig is a known warmonger and espouses the same 'soviet containment" strategy as the neocons. Barack's announced 'troop withdrawal strategies' have not mentioned the removal of contractors. At least none that I've heard. In the 42 minute speech in which Barack mentioned the 'strong diplomacy' approach, he mentioned contractors 0 times.

Erroll please, one thing at a time. First we've got to get someone into the whitehouse with a brain and a moral compass. With Obama we've got a chance. If that other guy gets in...well...everything you speak about will continue AND WORSE!
Why does this surprise anyone? Companies have been doing exactly this inside American borders for years.
Joe Tseng @ 35:
Thank you Joe, why is this such a difficult concept to convey? I know there are sheeple in the democratic party who believe that Obama will save us from all evil, send you a pony for your birthday, cause the rivers to run lemonade, and turn the mountains into chocolate cake HOWEVER THE REST OF US DON'T
We need to support Obama full out for the next 60+ days for one reason and one reason only. IF WE DON'T HAVE ANY OVERWHELMING TURNOUT WITH THE VAST MAJORITY OF VOTERS CASTING THEIR BALLOT FOR OBAMA THE RAT B*STARDS WILL STEAL THE ELECTION AGAIN!!!
Once Obama's in office and we have a clear majority in the house and senate then it's time to tighten the screws and make these people do their job, representing the citizens of the country not the freakin' corporate megalomaniacs.
So here's the game:
1. WE GET OBAMA ELECTED
2. WE TAKE BACK OUR FREAKIN' COUNTRY, if they're not with us they're out on their butts.
Any questions?
dadams @ 33:
I no longer listen to Obama's speeches.
I watch what he does.
He pulled a trick on FISA.
I will no longer listen to him.
If I did I would be carefully looking at how he parses the language.
He is a gifted speaker, he is an intelligent fellow.
Our chances for the future of the country are zero with McFraud, they are better with Obama.
The ruling class will still be in power, whichever of the duopoly candidates gets in. If they get in.
We will see what he does.
You might gather that I am not for either one of them.

Alice X - (Chomsky Nader) - status quObama - change you can pretend in - @ 38:
Here's how I look at it. We're in a bus hurtling down an increasingly steep slope, we can see the abyss ahead, suddenly we're told we have a choice between one of two new buses. One bus we know for certain has NO brakes in fact the accelerator is floored. The other bus MIGHT have brakes.
Which one are you choosing to continue down that slope with? I may not like either choice but I'm jumping on that bus that MIGHT have brakes cause the other choice is a dead certain disaster.
Erroll @ 17:
I'm not sure from your statements whether you are a McCain supporter, hate Obama, or think they both are bad choices. I will make it clear that I am an Obama supporter. I will also make it clear that I do not believe in every single thing either one candidate believes in. Further, I do not claim to know every single little fact. In fact, I do know that Obama plans on leaving some military personnel in Iraq; what I did was more of a figure of speech. Heck, Hannity and other repugs continuously make the statement that Obama will raise our taxes, which is a false statement; so I figure I can throw out a figure of 140,000, even though I know that not to be the case. In the 2 minutes I used to throw together that last response, I didn't have time to search and see how many he plans to take out of Iraq.
By the way, I do believe that it is terribly wrong for those contractors to be in Iraq; they get paid far more than our own military do; they seem to be under less scrutiny and have less accountability. I cannot stand what companies like Blackwater and KBR have done.
Lastly, I never have believed that Obama is a fully anti-war candidate.. I do strongly believe, however, that Obama is much more prone to getting out of Iraq than McCain and do so reasonably; I do strongly believe that Obama is much less prone to getting into a war than McCain would be.....McCain has at least 2 Neocons top advisors, Randy Scheunemann and Robert Kagan, who were members of PNAC...an organization which long pushed for attacking Iraq long before 9-11, and long before Bush actually went in. The two guys are foreign policy advisors for McCain.....so what does that tell you?
While I hate, hate, hate all war, Obama himself has said that he isn't against all war.
If you don't like either candidate, that's ok; if you are totally, totally against war at all, I applaud you; but if you're supporting McCain and the Republicans, I am very sorry for you. I initially thought you were a McCain supporter....but perhaps I am wrong.
Why the hell isn't this in the news? I guess learning about McCain's new sweetheart's love of creationism and God is more important than our contractors using SLAVES.
Just out of curiousity, how do we know the survivor and the families aren't lying?
Why would they? Could be a lot of reasons. I don't know. But we don't know for a fact they're telling the truth either.
Joe Tseng @ 35:
Thanks, Joe....that's what I believe as well.
General Jack D. Ripper @ 41:
General Jack
It is extremely unclear why you might wish to believe that I somehow support McCain when I pointed out that Obama wishes to leave not only a residual force in the region of Iraq but also leave the 149,000 civilian contractors in Iraq intact. The point which I thought should have been evident is that Obama is just as militant as McCain. Despite what the media and the two major parties try to tell the American people, voters in this country still have a right to vote for a genuine third party progressive candidate if he or she wishes.
As Jeremy Scahill of Democracy Now! points out from this article, Obama, like McCain, has no real desire to remove ALL American troops and forces from Iraq and actually allow Iraqis to govern their own country as they see fit.
http://www.prorev.com/2008/07/obama-will-get-troops-out-of-iraq.html
Erroll,
From your first statement in item 7, I did think you were a strong McCain supporter.....my mistake.
I want us completely out of Iraq, but I also think we do indeed need a person like Obama with that moral compass and a brain to get us started. Maybe my comment in item 6, right before yours, would help understand what I feel about the situation.
Peace
Congress has the power to investigate this company. They have subpoena power. The problem is that the Justice Department won't prosecute. Congress and hold hearings, bring out the fact that KBR uses outright slavery, and then refer the issue to the Justice Department. However, since the Justice Department takes orders from Chaney (I'm sure Bush can't spell "KBR" ) there will never be a federal investigation.
Perhaps a Federal Grand Jury?
Erroll @ 17:
and why do you think there is a “terrorist no fly list” ?

How can a person claim to be a christian and be a republican?
General Jack D. Ripper @ 46:
General Jack
I am sure that you are sincere when you signed off with the word peace. But I cannot make that same claim about the person whom you believe has a "moral compass." If his compass were truly moral and if he actually desired peace Obama would not be sending more troops into Afghanistan where 90 civilians were recently slaughtered by 500 lb. American bombs, 60 of them being children, ranging from 6 months to 16 years. Sending MORE American soldiers into a country that is already racked by American bombs is the worst way to bring about peace. Perhaps Obama can ask the families of those 60 dead children if sending additional soldiers into their country is the peaceful and just thing to do. McCain wishes to add more troops into Iraq and Obama, the savior of the Democratic party, wishes to add more troops into Afghanistan. It should be obvious that neither of these two militaristic candidates can possibly lay claim to being a "peace candidate", much to the dismay and sorrow of the Afghanis and Iraqis.

WTF happened to my country.
I would've been here sooner, but for the past four hours I've been downloading free cartoon porn.
I don't know what y'all are bitchin' about, Eric Prince (of darkness) is perfectly justified in keeping slaves, it's right there in the Bible - and we all know that he's a God fearin' man.
Well, ain't that just dandy.... There's yer privatized army workin Rummy.. There's where your trying to fight wars with mercs ends up asshole!!! Are you fucking happy yet!!????? YOU better hope you up and die soon, cause there's just a buttload of bad karma waiting to shit on your head in the Hague you sonofabitch!!!!!! FUCK YOU Donald Rumsfeld and your goddamned fightin wars on the so-called cheap (not so damned cheap after all, in lives OR money!) with private business entities mother fucker!!!! I hate your guts for what you and your kind have done to this country!!!! JD
KBR= Keeping Bush Rich.....
So it's not just raping and electrocuting ... now it's SLAVERY too?!?
GOD BLESS AMERICA! Can this country slip any deeper into the shitter?
never! NEVER! I will NEVER believe such a thing about a company so strongly associated with Dick Cheney.
jnratliff @ 49:
huh? DON'T YOU GET IT?? they're PRO-LIFE!!
I'm sure that KBR tried it just this one time--with 6 dudes from Nepal. It was just an experiment to see if they could get away with it, and it didn't work so they won't do it again. It was a mistake. Those guys' passports were lost by mistake and then they accidentally got put on a plan to Iraq. It's all just a big misunderstanding. Dick Cheney's old buds who run KBR are God-fearing, Jesus-lovin' patriots who are doing their part in the War on Terror. Anybody who can't see that isn't wearing his flag pin.
Has Chris Wallace reported on this yet?
Our country and it's reputation is at the bottom of the biggest and the most foul of sewers in history anyway, why not add slave labor to the list?
Hekuva job George.
