Did Obama get a Palin bounce?
By John Amato Tuesday Sep 02, 2008 11:50amGallup Poll Daily tracking from Aug. 30 through Sept. 1, finds Barack Obama leading the race for president with his highest share of support to date. Fully half of national registered voters now favor Obama for president, while 42% back John McCain. (Gallup)

FOIST!!!!
I guess now we have to wait and see if there is a Sarah bounce or if it's just a Sarah plop.
People were waiting to see what McCain would do after Obama made his V.P. pick.
McCain obviously flunked that test.
Hell yeah he got a bounce. As my one female friend said, "That polar bear killing bitch. GR!"
I think the Obama/Biden ticket is pickin up steam.
Sitemonitor...is this server under attack again...I'm having all kinds of problems with this site.
Sarah Harriet Miers Palin: An anchor on an already sinking campaign.
liberalNmoderation @ 5:
McCain is flaming out.
Great to see that Palin has brought at least as much bounce to Obama as it has to McCane's loins.
McCain's motto:
Country Club First!
Weird, you would think most average Americans would embrace a book-burning, flat earth, separatist, fundamentalist, anti-choice, inexperienced, hypocritical former beauty queen.
What's up with that?
goatsage @ 11:
I know! Crazy ain't it?
McAin't not only can't complete the Hail Mary pass -- but he gets dropped for a loss. Time to punt Palin?
Have they shipped in the
sperm donuhboyfrienfiance yet?i seem to think 99% of polls are WORTHLESS... anyone know of any RELIABLE polling?
any that seem to have a track record of really calling what's going on?
Sarah Palin is a MAN!
Republicans should stop using the Vetting Emporiums:

Obama pulling awaaaaay.
Maybe McCain should take Palin shopping in Baghdad.
its me ya krazy, polls aren't worthless, they just change. if you don't like polls, call a psychic hotline to see how well the candidates are doing.
Of course it is. Palin is a walking disaster. If you listen to MSM you would think she was the best thing since sliced bread. But to the average American, she's a religiuos nut-job. Add the fact her daughter is pregnant, you have disaster. Oh sure, the Conservatives say how heroic she is for keeping the baby. But remember, just a few years ago young pregnant teenagers were young women with no morals who are a drain on society. Now it happened Palin? What a wonderful mother she is! The hypocrisy stinks.
and just wait until the tabloids start hitting the stands that all have pictures of palin on the cover with some variation of the headline "secrets, lies, scandal". that should really help those gop numbers - go down. mcsame can bitch about the "elite media" types all he wants, but when the rags know what their readers want to see. and in this case it seems to be sarah on a stick.
Truth Ragle @ 10:
LOL.
Yep, GOP Conventions are gated community living writ large. Keep that reality riffraff out!
OT--
Palin and family, plus Levi just arrived in St Paul, McCane greets them on the tarmac. McCane hugs the pregnant girl, then pats Levi on the shoulder--no handshake! Priceless!!

Are there plans to put sonograms of the baby on the big screen at the convention?
Or are they going to simply hang punting on the daughters tummy?
Liberal AND Proud @ 26:
Sorry...bunting.
P.D. @ 20:
The Northern Lights are on, but nobody is home.
So far, only scripted stuff from Palin. She is window dressing. period. If she talks that redneck Alaska talk to America off script, the crazy will come out and the game is over.
P.D. @ 20:
The fact is that this woman will be advocating abstinence-only education and banning abortion. And she is a walking example of how well that policy worked out for her own children. It's not an attack on her daughter, it's a legitimate question to ask the mother about the policies that she believes the rest of us should live under. If Palin has her way, then millions of other American families will be faced with pregnant daughters before they even get out of high school.
dosido @ 28:
The crazy has been out for the last 8 years.
Oh my God! Check out the news! Palin is greeting McCain at the Airport. Here comes Saint McCain of 'America First' descending! God this is nauseating.
fastfeat @ 23:
where did you catch this?
Joementum @ 13:
Could it be a setup? They brought her on the ticket just to have all these damned liberal bloggers bring her down and they will have no choice put to toss her under the bus and bring on LIEberman. American women will be appalled at the way Palin was treated by the 'Left' and will vote for McShame in record numbers.
Just sayin'...
P.D. @ 20:
that's what they claim in public, but i have to believe that there are a good number of funides out there who have to be thinking that if she'd been home "where women belong" giving her daughter guidance it wouldn't have happened. of course, considering palin had a shotgun wedding herself...
P.D. @ 31:
Did the press receive a scorecard to keep track of who is married to who, and who is the father of which baby?
I lost track days ago.
dosido @ 32:
never mind...
The bottom line is Crash/Burn 08 is more of the same.
The Bush administration is fully involved in saving McCain.
Obama/Biden 08 if you want climb out of the hole, not dig deeper.
Palin is the last nail in the coffin. Most people still don't know who she is and are giving this "hockey mom" the benefit of the doubt. I've seen enough to be just about certain that she will self-destruct, as people do get to know her and consider what a dangerous world it would be if the end-of-times HALLELUJA nut case is near "the button". The Repug spin machine can't save this one.
Bye bye Repugs. We (the world) won't miss you!
P.D. @ 31:
Did they all climb aboard the Hypocrisy Express for the ride back to the hotel?
bbk@29, I am one of those parents who's daughter had a child at 16. My mother(a religious zealot herself) was ashamed of me. She couldn't even bring it up to har friends. That is why I am so pissed off about this situation. It is OK for Palin's daughter but not my child? Unbelievable!
Obama's campaign people are useless. On Larry King last night, Robin Gibbs failed to push back against the meme that the race is tied, and even seemed to accept it. Doesn't he look at the polls??? Then Gibbs himself, referred to Lieberman as a Democrat. Great job, moron!
Honestly, now I know why Obama isn't 20 points ahead.
And, after a week of nothing but Republican campaign operatives, pundits and radio hosts responding to the Democratic Convention, King brought on Jesse Ventura, a libertarian Ron Paul supporter, to offer his insights. He said he hadn't even bother watching either convention. At one point he even said "I'm not the guy to ask." Basically he got free airtime to shill for Ron Paul and criticize Obama for raising his taxes and having bigger government. Of course, Ventura did get some digs in at the Republicans, but why did they go to him? And why didn't they have him on last week? WTF, CNN?!?!
BTW, Democratic operatives, quit praising McCain....and STOP saying Sarah Palin has a compelling personal story. She's a corrupt extreme right-wing nutjob who wasn't vetted.
One other thing, D.L Hughey is an incoherent idiot.
I'm telling ya, if last night's complacency was any indication, this race WILL be tied in a few days.
Before I shitcanned the tv I used to search in vain for anything to watch that didn't insult me as an adult. Not much luck with that. But I did find something, now that I think about S. Palin, that would be ideal for her personality. Shopping channels. She has the looks, the talent and the voice to make it big on one of the countless ways the tv gets you to part with your money for something you never realized you needed.
Yes, I can see it all now.....PALIN'S PICK OF THE DAY! .....a show devoted to maternity clothes and all the baby paraphernalia we kiddies never needed when we were tots.
Barring that, she could get a well paid job as a pig caller.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
Gee...such a sad last 24 hours.
Even the trolls are depressed and gone into hiding.
goatsage @ 33:
Could be...but I think it's more likely a case of McBains "maverickey" nature...choosing his veep based on little else than appearance and gender to woo the supposed PUMAs...don't think it worked out like he'd hoped.
"Palin bounce"? Oh my, just what could this mean?
For McCain it just might be the "Palin plunge" or possible the "Palin sucking sound" of his numbers heading south (literally).
Seriously though, it is more likelt just an Obama blip until the MSM takes corrective action to again tighten the race. With billions of ad revenues at stake these Mad Men certainly can't have the race over so early.
It is encouraging that Obama is at 50%. More encouraging that McCain hasn't yet got past 45% in a serious poll. This is the most under reported aspect of the polling, and the most telling. Me thinks the Maverick has hit the wall, and this time didn't take one of our fighter jets with him.
Just received this hilarious e-mail:
Sarah Palin (sp?) has ignited the presidential race and fired up the GOP -- as evidenced by three women at the RNC who took the time to print the words "We," "Love," and "Sarah" on pieces of paper and tape them to the backs of their t-shirts. Sarah's even won the backing of the level-headed Rep. Michele Bachmann (R- MN) -- not exactly known for toeing the party line. Clearly, the liberal left realizes that it can't match this kind of unbridled enthusiasm for its candidate. So what are they doing? Attacking her character. Questioning her qualifications. Imagine a political group attacking an opponent because it can't win on the issues or the record. It's disgusting.
So let's set the record straight. Sarah Pahlen (sp?) is not only more qualified for the Oval Office than Barack Obama -- she might just be the most qualified political candidate in our nation's history:
1. Putting Country First - Her membership in the Alaska Independence Party proves that she's exactly the kind of leader America needs: the kind that will always put country first -- even if that country happens to be The Republic of Alaska. Obama claims he loves America -- but has he ever loved it enough to favor seceding from it? It's called tough love, Senator. Look into it.
2. Independence - Sarah hates indicted Senator Ted Stevens, but raised money for him. She hates the "bridge to nowhere," but supported it. She wants to shatter Hillary's glass ceiling, but wears t-shirts touting the size of her boobs. We're dealing with an innovative politician; one who refuses to be categorized. Obama may call himself the candidate of "change," but Sarah Pailen's (sp?) entire political life has been about saying one thing, and then doing another. Now that's "change we can believe in."
3. Family Values - This is someone who's not afraid to preach abstinence for your daughter, even though her own unmarried 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. This is someone who's not afraid to hop on a plane from Texas to Alaska while she's in premature labor. This is someone who's not afraid to hit the campaign trail with a 5-month-old special needs baby. That's what I call dedication to family. Obama, on the other hand? A Muslim.
4. Intellect - Yes, Sarah recently admitted that she didn't know exactly what it was the Vice President did. Yes, she wants creationism taught in public schools. Yes, she doesn't believe global warming is manmade. But I'd like to point out the fact that she wears glasses -- and that's not something dumb people generally do. Obama? No glasses.
5. Military Affairs - As Governor, Pollen (sp?) is authorized to deploy Alaska 's National Guard in times of emergency. And while the Guard's Adjunct General admits that she plays no role in national defense, and isn't briefed on military exercises, the fact is -- she's been photographed holding a machine gun, while Obama has yet to wield so much as a .38 for the cameras. When it comes to keeping me safe, that's all I need to know.
6. Foreign Affairs - While Obama likes to take Middle East tours, meet with Europe 's leaders, and brag about his running mate being the foreign policy voice of the Senate, he can't hold a candle to Palenn's (sp?) understanding of today's complex, dangerous world. Yes, Sarah admitted that she hadn't paid much attention to the war in Iraq , but she knew enough to rightly call it a "task from God." Yes, she's only left North America once in her life, but her experience as a local sportscaster gave her the ability to follow events as they unfold at lightning speed. And as Cindy McCain pointed out, while Barack Obama was sipping lattes in Cambridge Square , Sarah Pinkston (sp?) was staring down the barrel of Putin's Kalashnikov -- a one woman wall keeping America safe from invasion.
7. Restoring America 's Image - Who better than a former beauty queen to add some new luster to America 's battered image? Paylen (sp?) will take a proverbial can of Aqua Net to our nation's unruly hair, and apply liberal (no pun intended) amounts of blush to Lady Liberty's cheekbones. In a word, she'll dazzle the world with her charm and style. Even the most anti-Western extremists will melt when they see the People and Vanity Fair spreads of Sarah warming her fur-lined extremities over burning science textbooks. And how would Obama restore our leadership in the world? The question we should be asking is: why does he only have two children, while Sarah has at least twice that number? What does Senator Obama have against America 's children?
8. Her Soul - In one 15-minute meeting, and one follow-up phone call, John McCain was able to determine that Sarah was more than his running mate -- she was his "soul mate." Not only that, but that she was more qualified to be a heartbeat away from the Oval Office than any Republican on earth. Yes, this is a testament to the power and quickness of McCain's decision making. But it's also a testament to the power of Sarah Payton's (sp?) soul. As a Muslim, it's not even clear that Obama has a soul.
So Sarah Pillston (sp?) qualified to be Vice President? To be one bad biopsy away from being the most powerful human being on earth? To lead America back to prominence and prosperity, while keeping us safe from a world of ever-changing threats?
In her own words: "Yup...yup."

How about tackling the root of the problem and dropping McCain?*
*This is purely from the point of view of what's best for the Republicans. Since I support the Democrats, I'm all for this nonsense continuing if it helps them and hurts the Republicans.
"McCain Campaign Crushed by Baby Boom"
I can't wait until Hillary slams this vindictive, pandering, hypocritical, secessionist for believing she can actually get votes from educated, progressive women simply because she has a pussy.
There's so much criticism against the left and the Democrats who have sharply criticized the Alaskan Governor and Sen. McCain. The GOP and the McCain campaign doesn't want to answer any more questions about vetting. Methinks they do protest too much.
They claim she has more executive experience than Sen. Obama. Maybe but I'm more concerned, as most people would be, about her judgment. A person who believes in teaching creationalism is schools needs to be asked: which version of "creation" do you teach? Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, etc. If you think the Bible is right, how does that maintain the separation of church and state. I'm just sayin'.
After tonights speech, I expect a bigger bounce for Obama/Biden.
Try listening to Palin for more than 5 minutes. I find her voice extremely irritating. And come the debates, Biden will be eatin' him some baked Alaska.
Don't count on the Gallop Polls to put Obama in Office.
The Dems could just replay that clip on youtube to keep that Palin bounce going

She cut the budget when it came to help for pregnant teens.
PorridgeGun @ 41:
You're stressing too much. There is actually some advantage to this reporting that things are "close" (when cell phone owners are not polled, when undecideds almost always break to the challenger and when polls do show that Obama supporters are FAR more motivated... even more motivated now with this end-of-times dreamer Palin on the ticket).
You can't really call it a "bounce" when the bus is in the ditch and the wheels have fallen off.
A fundie blogger in central Oklahoma was aghast and angry at Palin's daughter's pregnancy b/c Palin's family should be role models, and their acceptance and joy @ daughter's out-of-wedlock pregnancy shows that they don't disapprove and so in actuality they are encouraging young pregnancies. What the Fundies will take from the daughter's pregnancy will vary, I'm thinking. But since it's connected with sex, they like to keep it hidden.

Jo@57, Cutting funding for pregnent teens. Can we spell IMMORAL. I thought these people were Christian?
It will be impossible to know whether it was a Palin bump or a convention bump.
I'm actually tipping the latter. The beauty of Obama is that he's someone to actually vote FOR, not just the box you tick to vote AGAINST the other guy. His speech brought that home and I think we'd be seeing this bump with or without Palin.
I think to suggest that she's the reason Barack's numbers went up sells Obama short and makes Palin far more important than she is.

the mccain camp will reject the cheney-style veep situation, and cast the veep back to the non-position it has been traditionally. mccain, and his trusted thuggies--graham and lieberman--will run the show. but, if palin wants to get them a beer, they are ok with that.

Palin's attorney, Thomas Van Flein, sent a letter to the investigator stating Palin's claim that the investigation should be conducted by the state Personnel Board, which is staffed by Palin political appointees.

Good news folks. I was at Walgreen's Pharmacy the other day picking up a prescription at the drive through window when an elderly couple pulled up beside me and started honking to get my attention. When I looked over they were giving me a thumbs up and they said that they saw the Obama bumper stickers on the back of my car. They said that they had voted Republican their entire lives and that this year they had had enough of the Republican party. Not only were they supporting Obama this year, but most of their friends were as well they said. I found this really encouraging considering that I live in the heart of Indiana which has went Republican ever since LBJ. I hope that it's a sign of things to come.

Just think if Obama wins. These evangelicals will lose all the power they once had. From riding high in the last several years to total devastation. Good. I'm not against religion. But these folks give religion a bad name.
what concerns me (and i realized it myself) but rick davis mccain campaign manager said this campaign is about personality. to me and this is offensive my gut says sarah palin is a fake. unless you live your life somewhat like hers........she has nothing to do with you. many on the (R) certain demographics are going to gravitate toward her and rally party. i believe it's important to challenge very hard and get her exposed. her church, her financial dealing(pesonal&political),her husband's political party affiliation.
on the CNBC financial market show one person was saying she has more executive experience well that could be considerd true vs. mccain also. it's nonsense.
we could lose the PERCEIVED personality game.
another item i believe mccain will be energized.....mccain is NOT having fun i noticed it weeks ago. it doesn't like the process the questions and i don't think he believes everything he is saying.
if obama gets a bump great but it's like getting a wave it doesn't last. we need to challenge Palin on issues earmarks/church philosophy like they did to obama.
we need to rally our troops.
Liberal AND Proud @ 86:
Yes, I've had to explain this about 15,000 times since I've got a lot of European friends: The overall popular vote margin doesn't need to be big. If you have 51%-vs-49% in every state, the other guy gets zero electoral college votes.
And let's not underestimate the potential turnout disparity. Polls don't show who will actually cast their vote, and judging from the primaries, the Republicans are in deep trouble in that area.
Careful everyone! The Fascists Republicans can do more with low expectations than any group I have ever seen. That is how they win debates, everyone expects that their side will be the mop in a complete mopping and they manage to put 3 words together without puking on their own shoes and they win! With the willing and enthusiastic help of the corporate media of course. The corporate media will not let this be anything but a close, nail biting, horse race. People must be glued to their TV sets no matter how much they have to lie to make that happen.

It's more like a Palin-on-hold bounce. Because Obama definitely didn't get a post-convention speech bounce. Just the opposite. Obama lost points vs McCain in the days after his speech. He lost the points Hillary and Bill earned for him with their speeches.
Actually, if anything, I'd chalk up Obama's 4 point post-convention gain in these polls to the fact that millions of potential poll respondents in the Gulf states weren't home to answer their phones over the last few days and the cellphone users were busy communicating with each other over more pressing issues than answering a list of poll questions.

He is not trying to woo the PUMAs; he is pandering to the right-wing Christofascist base.
My father might sit out of this election. He was leaning McCain, but can't stand Palin.

"Did Obama get a Palin bounce?"
Let's see . . . Thursday night, Obama gives his acceptance speech, Friday morning, McCain announces Palin as his VP pick. So Palin must be responsible for the bounce, not Obama's speech?!?!?
Andy @ 103:
No way, no how, NoBama does Indiana go Dem this year.
But don't let that stop the obligatory quadrennial mid-summer Democratic Victory Dance.
I think Palin's announcement the day after the Obama's scripted speech helped boost McCain and the republican platform. Folks here were not raving so much the Obama's speech, but were after Palin. In reality, Palin was the talking point in the media and everywhere.
Get real, folks!
Liberal AND Proud @ 86:
I think it was Chuck Todd who said if Obama is 3% ahead on Election Day, it'll be a landslide.
I still can't believe McFail/Failin' is polling over 40%....MADNESS!!!
Dr Acula @ 118:
No they don't. In fact they encourage complacency.
liberalNmoderation @ 115:
I've said this many times. The GOP is not controlled by TRUE conservatives...who believe in strong national defense, but are against proactive forays into intl affairs, believe in balanced budgets, fiscal restraint and keeping government out of people's personal lives. These people are now called "moderates", and they are the folks that are completely disillusioned by this Party. They are also comprised of many former "Boll Weevil" Democrats.
They are flocking back to the Democratic Party in droves, having been driven off by the extremist crazies, neocons and evangelical fundamentalists that have usurped control of the party.
I have news for you...Dobson does NOT represent the evangelicals in this Palin matter...despite what you see on the screen at the convention. Dobson knows that if the GOP loses...his political clout goes out the window. So, he's got to stay with the horse he's ridden for 20 years. But the true believers are disillusioned. The little old ladies and wingnut couples that believe in the fundamentalist view are completely disillusioned by the embracing of a social situation (unwed pregnancy) that is completely anathema to them.
Those folks are going to stay home. Mark my words. They will.
This election is OVER. McCain may get 42 or 43% of the vote...but the 29%ers that he needs to get him to 50% are GONE.
CMINCA @ 122:
Maybe both?

If they are the sheeple we all know they are, they will simply follow James Dobson's lead.
liberalNmoderation @ 136:
The timing of McLame's announcement was shrewd; the compliant MSM did a 180 and it was all Palin, all the time. Obama's speech was already history in their eyes.
P.D. @ 66:
I'm sure they've covered that already by "faith-based initiatives should be increased to help these mothers who make the right decision and choose life". The churches will support them (LOL), yeah, that's the ticket.
So, you guys know this whole "Obama and McCain are tied!" meme is a bogus, ratings-preserving, Situation Room(tm) justifying shell game, right?
Here's the aggregate polling data for the last year:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/us/general_electi...
Obama consistently ahead with McCain barely peeking above the Obama curve in the midst of Bittergate, Hillary, Bowling for Lattes, Rev. Wright, etc.
Since Hillary left, Obama has been trending flat, bouncing between 44 and 48. McCain has been trending downward, bouncing between 40 and 44.
When a McCain upswing meets an Obama downswing, everyone starts proclaiming that "the polling is very close!"
It's kind of not.

GOP symbolism and hype is so idiotic. Reminds me of a High School pep rally.

Yes....but it's not working in their favor at all!
g.w.bush beat out mccain in 2000 now all of a sudden he is the answer.it was interesting yesterday kind of like the party fighting itself the republicans. irarely hear the word republicans....NO cheney NO bush in person...there NOT so proud of him except hardcore (R) wingers...christian soldier types and wealthy....that could care less about the theatrics....more concerned about their capital gains and ability to shelter income.
the simpleton demographic of the (R) want htis ridiculous notion of perception....'she's just like me'
they're scrambling right NOW...i predict a good speak from palin they will write something good...the real proof in the pudding is interviews with media. we can set the tone/curiosity by creating specific interest.
here's one the (R) used the catchy 'Bridge to No Where'
well she was for it before she was against this is catchy
and many people have some linguistic image/memory
of this. the (R) is NO longer fiscally responsible earmarks, earmarks, earmarks, earmarks
